Weird sound coming from above F1-F3 keys - locks computer up

I just got my MacBook Pro back from Apple and they did not fix the problem below (although, they fixed a number of small things, thankfully, like the bad speakers, crash from sleep, flaking keyboard paint, etc.). I am taking it back in today and need to figure out how to best describe this problem or point them in the right direction, since it was not addressed.
About a week ago, my MacBook Pro starting making this weird sound above the F1-F3 keys, something resembling a loud hard drive accessing sound or a sparking sound. When this happens, the cursor turns into the colored spinning beach ball, locking up my ability to interact with my computer. This continues for maybe 5-10 minutes. Then the sound stops, and the beachball goes away. But, it could come back anytime. This makes working on my computer virtually impossible as there are times it happens 3-4 times in an hour. It comes randomly, at any time. It seems some likely if the computer has been running for awhile and is overheating, but it has been known to come on bootup sometimes, as well.
No idea what his is - I already had the Main Logic Board replaced and it didn't help, so it must be another component up there underneath the F1-F3 keys.
Any expert advice? Thank you.

hi Andy
ok i've just learned how to operate the console...
and the noise just happened at 8.52 though there is no record at 8.52 !

though i did scroll back earlier and though i can't be certain it was happening at the this time i saw this suspicious entry repeated hundreds of times.  i'm a complete novice on console - this is just on the start-up screen - not tried any of the side menus.

  • Weird Sound coming from safari?

Help me, I have a 2010 13" macbook pro with os x mountain lion,  and sometimes when I have safari open, a weird chicken squawking, bongo drum sound comes on. This sound happens on any website, not just one particular website. It is scaring me and I think I might have a virus, can anyone help me? I've had it for about 3 months now :/ It just happens out of the blue and to stop it, I have to close the window I am on, on safari! I am very very worried as I love my macbook to bits <3
    thanks in advance xx

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Weird sound coming from my ipod, help

My ipod has just frozen and it's emiting a high-pitched sound (not throught the ear phones, but directly from the device itself). What do i do? I'm going crazy with this sound.

Run an Apple Hardware Test to see if it picks up any anomalies.
I would open the MBP and inspect the internal components with emphasis on the fan, as suggested by dalstott.
Also make certain that you data is backed up.  Though you HDD is not in the upper left hand corner, I don't discount that as a possibility.
If your purchase date is less than 12 months ago you are still under warranty.  I would then take to Apple and have them perform diagnostics to determine what the problem may be.
    Ciao.

  • Weird sound coming from my ipod

Hi, Problem 1:My ipod mini makes a grinding noise when connected to my computer.. It only generates this sound while updating.
Problem 2: I bought an album on Itunes store and when I tried to put it on my ipod it only copies the first three songs..
    Whats wrong???
    // Fredrik
    PC   Windows XP   Ipod mini

Same thing happened to me. I took the ipod back yesterday to the apple store and I got a new one. However, I'm still having the same problem. I think that something is wrong with the settings or itunes 9 itself. Going to keep checking.

Normally, the signal strength is great where I am. The downloads are always fast too. And right now, there is nothing else in this house that is turned on which should be causing any type of interference. I only have my cell phone and computer turned on. I do hear some kind of modulating energy type sound coming from outside. Would this be it? None the less, I have created some WiFi diagnostics which can be downloaded from https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2wbE3EVNff3fnEyREE0YV9qZXlJSy1NM05FZDQ0 UVBSamdDUmhZaVR3aFdxNXRqaXJnTzQ&usp=sharing
How can I find a resolution to this? That modulating sound is kind of making me feel really agitated and uncomfortable and I have no idea where it is coming from. I am wondering if it is the cause of the WiFi lag too? If so, what can I do about it? I am not sure where it is coming from.

  • Harsh rattling sound coming from fan.

Normally, when I use an application that requires a lot of CPU power or when I'm watching a YouTube video, the internal fan speeds up to 6000+ RPM but it started sounding weird the past week. Right when I "wake up" my MacBook from sleep, I here a faint rattling sound coming from where the fan should be but it disipates after a few minutes. When I view a video though, the rattling becomes a bit louder combined with the normal sound of the fan. Also, I noticed when I picked up my macbook when its fan was going fast and tilted it to its sides, the rattling sound corresponds with the movement of the computer (louder each time I tilted it left to right).
Could the fan be broken/loose? I sprayed some air into the keyboard to get rid of dust but nothing changed. I recently ran out of my Applecare warranty last September. Thanks in advance!

    Hey
Sorry to say but you could be looking at a hardware problem. That being said there are still things you can  try.
Try this artile: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 for an SMC reset.
If that does not work make sure all of your software is up to date. If it is, you may have a hardware problem.
Run the Apple hardware test that came on the disc with the computer to see if it comes up with anything... Although sometimes it doesn't even if there is a problem.
    Regards,
    Britt.

  • Weird noises coming from MBA

I just went to copy something hitting "command" and "c" and there was some weird screeching sound coming from my MBA. A few seconds after that, there were a few "bloop" sounds coming from it and then it stopped. Anyone else encounter this? It may be worth noting that when the screeching sounds occurred, there was a loading icon on the arrow pointer.

My MBA's hard drive (not solid) makes a fast clicking sound; occurs maybe every few hours. It doesn't happen when you'd expect, it's not during at the startup of a program or opening a large document. Just happens randomly.
    Is this normal?

  • Suddenly no sound coming from HP Pavilion 500-339 Desktop

I've had this computer less than a month without any issues. From a couple days ago there is no sound coming from any source (various speakers, headphone jack directly into computer).
I have checked everything, i.e., checked all the external cables, used the Windows diagnostics and checked all sound devices, volume settings, checked for mute etc. No issues have been detected with the audio hardware and drivers.
I've also done a system restore, removed recent Windows updates (within the week), uninstalled and reinstalled the IDT high-def audio drivers and still nothing.  Every time I do a diagnostic it says the audio is working properly yet no sound comes out for anything.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello @Brian13,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your audio on your HP Pavilion 500-339 Desktop PC is not working. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8), which you can use to restore your computer back to a point in time where your sound worked correctly.
If the Microsoft System Restore does not resolve your sound issue I would like you to use the HP Support document: Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 8) to put the original audio driver back in your computer. As this is the driver that came with your computer it should work correctly.
If the above steps do not fix your sound issue I think we should try a backup and recovery of your computer. To backup your personal information and ensure that it is not lost I would like you to review and follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), which will ensure your personal files are up to date.
***WARNING!! If you want to keep any emails or bookmarks/favorites you will want to back those up as well as I do not believe they are backed up in the HP Backup process.
Next, I would like you to review and follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8), which will you through recovering your computer back to factory settings.
*** IMPORTANT - Your personal files such as libraries, personalization settings, user accounts, and desktop themes are permanently removed. As well the computer settings are returned to the defaults (the way it was when it came from the factory). All apps and software that were installed on the computer when it came from the factory are reinstalled, and their settings are reset to the defaults. Additionally, software, apps, programs, and everything that you have installed or saved on the computer are permanently removed.

  • Some strange sounds coming from my laptop...

Hi, there. Lately my iBook G4 laptop has been making some odd noises, and I was wondering if they were serious. First, sometimes when it is lifted, such as from a lap onto a desk, the cd drive sounds like it is attempting to eject a CD, but there isn't one in the drive. This has been going on for about a month, but only happens occasionally and not every time it is lifted, so I kind of forgot about it. Today, I noticed another noise that sounded like the back-and-forth motion of an inkjet printer head, coming from roughly the center of the computer below the keyboard. It was sitting on my lap at the time and the noise stopped when I put it on my desk. It wasn't loud, but it wasn't the type of noise you would want to hear coming from your computer. I think there may be a part loose that is causing the noises.
The laptop was purchased new in mid-2005, and had been upgraded from 256MB to 1GB RAM last year. I'm very gentle with it, close the lid slowly and carefully after shutting down, and on the rare occasions when it leaves my desk it travels in a padded case to prevent it being jostled or damaged. It had been dropped once by a careless friend over a year ago, but it seemed fine and I noticed no problems with it afterwards or up until now. I don't use p2p programs or make changes to the operating system files, though I do have a few custom icons (only on folders on my desktop) and fonts. I have about 16GB of free space out of 60. I don't think software would be the cause of the issue, but you never know.
Right now I'm backing up my files on a 320GB SeaGate external drive, in case my problem is catastrophic and I need to format or my drive fails. What would be the best way to back up everything I need to make my computer exactly how it was before a format? Right now I am copying the Macintosh HD folder right onto my external drive. Is there a better way to do it that will allow me to easily replace libraries, preferences and settings along with my personal documents? My father mentioned "imaging" or "ghosting", but he works with PCs and I'm not sure how to do that on a Mac.
So anyway, here's a post summary. My computer sometimes tries to eject a CD that isn't there when it is moved, and today it made the aforementioned "inkjet printer head" noise until I put it on a level surface. What should I do, send it in to have a tech look at it? Since it seems to me like a hard drive issue, what's the best way to back up my computer such that all my preferences, bookmarks, libraries, and settings can be easily restored? My apologies if my post seems lengthy, I just wanted to give as many details as possible to provide background and be specific.

    I've noticed a similar issue.
My external speakers blew recently, and up until this point I've never had a problem listening to audio. So I started using my internal speaker until I found new external speakers. Now the internal speaker is blown as well, after only a few days of use. Audio comes out of the internal speaker as clicks (cah-chunk).
I'm wondering if there were some updates recently that caused this. I basically have no audio on my Mac Pro now, which is really aggravating.
I have the early 2009 Mac Pro

  • Sound coming from both speakers and headphones at the same time in probook 4440s

I have a Probook 4440s with windows 8 pro(64 bit) with IDT high definition codec installed. Yesterday when i was playing some songs i noticed that the sound was coming from both headphones and speakers even when my headphones are plugeed in and my lappy was having no such problems a few hours earliers while i was watching a movie. Please help..

It may be because you have both the internal speakers and headphones enabled at the sametime on your laptop. This might just happen automatically when you plug your headphones in. You need to manage your audio devices on your laptop.
Go to Control Panel> Hardware and Sounds> Manage Audio Devices> Playback Tab (which should already be selected)
In the playback tab there should be a list of all the audio devices you are using on your computer. Right click on the one you don't want to use and click disable. This should stop the sound coming from that audio device.
Remember: You will need to enable that audio device if you want to listen to sound through it again. Your internal speakers won't work once you enable them again. This might also be the case with your headphones. You may also have to do this every time your plug in a device or once you restart your computer.
Another note: Sometimes disabled devices will not show up on the audio device list so once you disable a device it will dissappear. This is an easy fix too. Just right click on an audio device and make sure show disabled devices and show disconnected devices is checked.
    I hope this helps.
(I was using a computer with Windows XP to explain the instructions but it should be similar with your Windows Operating System. You may however have to play around a little on your computer because it may be slightly different)

  • I put a case on my iPod touch 5 and now there is no sound coming from the speaker.  The head phones work though.  I called Apple Support and the 2 people I spoke with seemed baffled.  Has this happened to anyone and how do I resolve this?

I put a Griffin case on my daughter's iPod Touch 5 and now there is no sound coming from the speaker.  There is sound when we use the headphones.  Is there a mute function that I may have switched on and if so how do I turn it off?
It was a gift bought by her Godparents in January and I live in the islands so I can't just drive it back to the store to have them look @ it!
Called Apple Support and spoke to 2 people who seemed baffled and who could only suggest I reset the device.  Who h has not helped.
    HELP!!!!!!!

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar

    Hi
It's likely your fan,  It always runs on a MBA.  Mine is very quiet, others report some noise - here is one link.  There are lots of others.
    Hope this helps

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
I'm not optimistic that this will help any more than the procedures you've already tried, but it won't hurt to try.
Do you still have your OS 9 installation? If so, try booting into OS 9 and see if the problems with the audio are happening there, too. If so, you can bet it's a hardware problem.
How big is your hard drive and how much space remains available on it? If you don't have your OS 9 installation in order to check out whether it's a hardware problem and you have enough available hard drive space, you may want to try an Archive and Install of the OS in order to make sure it isn't an OS X system-wide problem. If that doesn't do it, you could back up your hard drive and restore your software.
All of this may just be spinning your wheels, but it's all stuff you can try before shelling out a lot of money for repairs.

  • Every time I scroll, there's a clicking sound coming from the top left corner of my macbook

Similar to the clicking sound of my hard drive, every time I scroll, or whenever there is any sort of animation on my screen, there's a similar clicking sound coming from the top left corner on my , around the area where the microphone is. I know the hard drive is at the bottom right corner, so is this a graphics card issue or am I overlooking the issue?

It is better to take the MBP to the Apple store for evaluation.
They have the diagnostic tools to make sure that there is no problem with the computer.
