Weird sound in start up and No bootable device

Hi,
Since last night I cannot start my laptop. When I try to start, it makes a weird sound and then no bootable device. The Hdd test and bios does not recognise the hard drive either. I tried forced restart and also tried reseating it. But it still makes the weird noise in the start up and no bootable device. Please heLp.

Sounds like the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

  • Sharp sound after start up and before shut down.

Hello. I'm on Dell XPS L401x laptop with JBL speakers. Earlier I had Arch Linux installed. I am setting it up again after hard drive crash. I have Gnome 3 installed and sound is being managed by PulseAudio - Alas setup.
Problem is that, whenever I boot up the laptop, there is sharp loud sound as if speakers were just powered on. Same sound pulse is heard just before the machine shuts down. Similar behaviour when I suspend it. Apparently, its a power issue. Speakers are being powered up and down, giving out the sound. But the sound is so sharp, that I'm afraid that it will break my speakers. Any solution to this? I am not using any power extra utilities yet.

I was so frustrated yesterday that I didn't even put enough information in OP - my bad. So, I'll put here whatever I've done.
First thing, I added a line to disable power save to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
After this, my startup pop vanished. However, suspend pop, resume pop and shutdown pop were still there.
Then I went ahead and edited file /etc/conf.d/alsa and set value of 'power off on shutdown' to "yes". This setting apparently mutes the speakers before powering the machine down. After this, my shutdown pops are gone. However, my machine by defult starts muted, which is annoying.
Anyway, I removed the powersave option from modeprobe.conf and start up pop is still gone.
So, current state is: No startup problem. Loud pops while suspend, resume and shutdown. Shutdown pop is removed by editing /etc/conf.d/alsa:
    # Whether to mute the master volume when stopped ("yes" or "no").
    # Useful for bad audio cards which make a noise on system poweroff.
    MUTE_VOLUME="yes"

For the "before shutdown" pop - you may have to hack your initscripts so that the ALSA modules *don't* get unloaded.
As a bit of reassurance, I've never heard of these annoying pops being the cause of physical damage.
Its really nice to see you here brebs. I have been reading your posts about this yesterday. When you ask me to hack initscripts, exactly what is to be done. Will this work for suspend-resume. And thanks for the reassurance, but mine is less like a 'pop' and more like a spike!
One more important thing! On my earlier setup, I DO NOT remember using pulseaudio at all. Apparently, Alsa was managing everything directly. Is pulseaudio really needed? My experience wasn't particularly pleasant with it. Firstly, it defaults my sound to HDMI soundcard and I'm unable to hear anything. Secondy, nder input device, it does not list my microphone unless I select 'all input devices' from the dropdown on bottom of pulseaudio volume control. Thirdly, in applications like skype and google video call, I have to manually go to pulseaudio and tell it to choose the internal microphone of my laptop. Otherwise, it loves to take input from HDMI card!

  • No boot sector on internal hard drive and No bootable devices.

Hello, I hope someone can help me.
I have a dell inspiron 1525. I recently replaced on of my memory 512mb modules with a 2gb memory module. At the same time I change the 120gb harddrive and upgraded it to a 320gb harddrive. After doing this when I start the computer I receive the message:
"No boot sector on internal harddrive".
"No bootable devices - - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility, Press F5 to run onboard diagnostic".
I have tried to change boot sequence and tried to boot from the Windows Vista Home Basic 32BIT. Regretablly with no results. If there is anyone who can guide me and help me to solve this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanking you in advance.

Whenever we get this error "No boot sector on internal hard drive", it means that our hard drive has no partition/ boot sector to boot/ start operating system (Windows).
The ultimate solution is to install Windows from beginning either by using CD/DVD or USB bootable flash drive. You need to have windows installation disc or bootable flash drive for that.

  • Re: Satellite L850 - start-up with 'No bootable device - Please restart system

I've been trying to fix this L850 - 1LK laptop which keeps crashing and so on. But whilst going through advance options in the troubleshooting section (Windows 8). I tried the, I think its called Toshiba recovery tool and click the option to wipe data assuming it would remove all the corrupt data so I could reinstall from factory settings.
However now when I boot it just says 'No bootable device - Please restart system' and when i restart it does the same. I've tried opening up recovery partition but there are so many different buttons that supposedly bring it up I'm unsure if I've press the right one. Any help?

    > I tried the, I think its called Toshiba recovery tool and click the option to wipe data assuming it would remove all the corrupt data so I could reinstall from factory settings.
Do you mean the option called: Toshiba Maintenance Utility ??
This is described in chapter C
The usage of the "Toshiba Maintenance Utility" will delete the HDD(s) of your Computer and this is not a Recovery tool! Executing this software will result in complete data loss!
You should use the option called: *Reset your PC* (chapter B)
This option is useful when you want to get a completely fresh start on a PC, with no previous files or configuration retained. This option permanently removes your personal files and apps from the PC and returns Windows 8 to its original state. That original state is the OEM factory default configuration.

  • No sound from the speaker and missing speaker device listed with Window 7

I have Window 7 and with SB X-Fi card installed for a long time now but yesterday, there is no sound from the speaker which connected to the normal speaker output of the card. I check the output device and the specker device is missing. I tried to run the software but it says no device.
How do I correct the problem?
    Thank you.

Take it to your local Apple Store along with US$149 for a replacement.

  • Weird sound when starting up/wake up

A macbook bought sometime late last summer, have had a few problems, but all were software errors and are solved. but recently it has been making weird noises when you turn it on, or wake it up. the sounds seems to be coming from the disc drive area and sounds like its trying to eject a disk, it "trys" two or three times. it was dropped the day before and has a small little chip on the bottom right corner. does anyone know if they noises are normal? or if i should take it into the apple store to get it checked out?

Ummmmm... the computer was dropped and now makes noises? That's not normal. Have you tried to insert a dvd or cd into the optcal drive to see if it still works? Sounds to me like you'll be making a trip to the Apple store....but don't expect that they're going to warranty anything....they'll know it was dropped.

  • Weird sounds on start-up

Got a problem with my MacBook Pro here. Just appeared today,
On every startup I get a lot of "system sounds" running. You know... like when you connect a cable, or connect to a network, or get a notification and so on.
I've heard the sound before sometimes but not this frequent. It's killing me.
I'm afraid there is something wrong with my macbook that could escalate to something bad.
There was also a problem with the network for a 15 minutes the first time it happened.
Heres a recording of the sound:
    http://soundcloud.com/fingar-b/system-sound-problem/s-WMDTS
See what I mean? (oh.. there it was again).
    Have anyo... (and again).
Have any of you had the same problem?
    Can you recognize the sound?
Am I dealing with a catastrophe here?

Probably just an app making that sound - not one that I have running, as I've never heard it.
    Skype, maybe?

  • Macbook Pro V10.6.6 making weird sound

My Macbook pro has started making this weird sound suddenly starting this morning. It's coming from the right side and the sound is very hard to explain. It's somewhat krrrrrrr, something like an electric, static sound. It's hard to hear at times but it can get quite annoying when it gets loud. It comes and goes. I tried restarting my computer but the sound still remains. What could that sound be? I hope all my internal hardware is fine
    Please help me out here!!

Try doing a SMC reset, it may take a couple of try's. The instructions are:
    *SMC RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    *PRAM RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

    Hi all!
I've just purchased a brand new genuine satellite l7501N0 model. I turn it on and "No bootable device- insert boot disk and press nay key" I tried 3 OS disks, nothing. I also connected it to the internet, nothing.
    Is is inherently malfunctioning?
    Thanks for the answers!

Please enter BIOS settings and set it to default. After doing this try to start your notebook again.
    The same result again?

  • Hallo, ich wollte auf eine eigene Partition von meinem mac noch windows installieren, doch jetzt komt beim starten immer nur: no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key. Was soll ich tun??? Oder woher bekomme ich so eine Boot disk?

    Hi,
ich wollte auf meinen Imac noch zusätzlich Windows 7 installieren.
jetzt kommt aber wenn ich starte nur noch: No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key.
    was soll ich jetzt tun?

When I started up my macbook Pro after a boat trip (just lying in my bag the whole time) it started making weird sounds. Why does it do that and how do I stop it?

The 13" retina MBP has two fans, left and right near the hinge and about 2.5" each from the edges of the case.
My conjecture is that one of the fans may be failing.  An appointment at an Apple store genius bar is the best option.  The evaluation will be FREE and a fan replacement (if that is the problem) should not break the bank account.
You might run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
This may confirm my suspicion or perhaps find a different problem. Note that an error free result should not be viewed as being definitive.
    Ciao.

  • I have a stuck CDR disk in my MacBook. I have tried everything and nothing works. When the computer starts it makes weird sounds and also when I try to eject it. Nothing Works! Please Help.

I have tried everything and nothing works. When the computer starts it makes weird sounds and also when I try to eject it. Nothing Works! Please Help.

I had that happen with a MacBook. It turned out that the metal case above the slot was slightly bent down.
Putting a flat blade screwdriver in the slot and gently twisting it to move the metal case up allowed it to eject. Don't put it in too far you only want to bend the case not the drive.
The case can get bent down by picking it up with your thumb pressing down on the case above the slot.

  • The harddrive makes weird sound and is dead!

    Hi
I bought this fancy car stereo with a aux input so I could listen to my iPod in the car. Whoever had the car before me had a magnet attached to the dashboard, for holding onto her cellphone. Well I looked at my iPod, I saw a metal cover and figured it would be perfect to have it on that magnet. Well, 2-3 trips later my iPod won't play anymore and when I try to turn it on it makes this weird sound as if something is scratcing in it, internally. Then that white screen comes up with a sad iPod-smilie. When I plug it to the computer it just keeps trying to start up, repeatedly.
    Have I destroyed my baby?
    This *****.

yup. its dead. this just happened to mine, oh, a couple weeks ago. its probably not due to the magnet, though. when i took mine in they said it was most likely because of some kind of physical trauma the ipod had been through, sudden or over time, such as dropping or just being moved around a lot. if your ipod is under warranty, though, you shouldnt have any trouble getting a good-as-new replacement at the store. when i went there was a pretty long wait, but once i got there it proceeded very quickly. i must say, i expected some kind of long ordeal, but all that happened was i showed him the noise it was making and the sad ipod icon, he said "ok", did something on his computer real quick, and went into the back and got me a replacement. if your ipod isnt under warranty anymore i suggest reading whatever information you have on ipod support(i dont know if you saved the little booklets in the box or not, i did). i read it all before i went in, and most of it is just protecting themselves in case they treat you like crap(which may have been the reason i expected them to), so i wouldnt get your hopes up too much if your ipod is no longer in warranty.
    good luck
