Weird square in Mavericks

Hi everyone!
Since I've installed OS X Mavericks in my MBP - laptop, sometimes I notice "weird square" on my screen. I dont think that my laptop's screen is broken because example when I noticed the square in Safari's address bar and moved it the square moving with it, and when I quit Safari, the mystery square disappeared and then i opened Safari again and the square didn't show anymore. That is happened about nine times after Mavericks and when I have Mountain Lion, there wasn't nothing squares like now.
I took a screen shot today when the mystery square came to Safari:

Can anybody help me with that?

Hello Yarno90,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with the box on your display of your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.
I found an article with steps to troubleshoot issues with displays.  This article is for internal and external displays, so you can skip any steps referring to an external display.  I recommend reviewing the full article, but this step specifically stands out to me:
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
You can find the full article here:

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • Weird Square Corner Window Decorations with GTK+ 3.16

For some reason all GTK3 applications have weird square corners since I updated to GTK+ 3.16. Here is a screenshot of a music program I'm making exemplifying this problem: http://i.imgur.com/vMf3MUO.png
It happens with ALL GTK3 applications.
Here is my gtk.css in my ./config/gtk-3.0 folder of my home directory:
    .window-frame
    border-width: 5px;
    box-shadow: none;
    margin: 5;
Is there anything in that file I can change to fix this problem? I'm using Fluxbox with compton.

Even with the new completely updated Vertex theme downloaded from https://github.com/horst3180/Vertex-theme my title bars and gnome tweak tool are white and don't look anything like the screenshots of the creator. What are the potential causes of this? I have reinstalled all of gnome and everything but I just get back to the same appearance.

  • Gnome-terminal weird square

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with gnome-terminal. I'm getting a weird square where it should just be a directory listing.
http://i36.tinypic.com/aw49k3.jpg - Pictures are better than words.
The character encoding is set to UTF-8, and my PS1="" line is:

I don't have this problem in urxvt... Any ideas?

Looks like an escape was missing. Not sure why urxvt wasn't affected...
Does the following work as desired?

  • Weird SQUARE BOXES in updated fields

I updates few hundreds of records by multiple updte statements where i copied and inserted values.
    I think I left some blank spaces .. i donno but ...
When i SELECT everything from what i updated I see some weird boxes (ONE SQUARE SHAPE BOX) next to the value
Ex: 234567'SQUARE BOX' ----> shape in place of 'SQUARE BOX'
Ex; AGIES'SQUARE BOX' -----> shape in place of 'SQUARE BOX'
But when i select and copy it and paste it into text pad it shows up as 234567 with cursor after few spaces
same is teh case with varchar field.
    I tried RTRIM
    but no use.
    Please suggest

would a regexp replace work. [:cntrl:] are the nonprinting or control characters so maybe
    regexp_replace(yourvalue,'[[:cntrl:]]' )

I am at a loss, Can you reset the pram on the G5? or is it even nessesary?
when it goes to the screen saver the screen just freezes, and then wakes up from the screen saver fine.

  • Weird square like Tab Character in Multiline Text

    ebs version 11.5
    forms 6i
    I have a multiline text item that allows the user to keep hitting an “add to text box” button to append to the text in the box. Every time they click the “add to text box” button, the new text should be placed on a new line. To accomplish this, I just do textitem:=textitem||CHR(13)||CHR(10);
This causes a tab character (little square) to be displayed on each line. What can I do to get rid of this? Is there a setting on the text item I can set or is there a different way to accomplish this?

The square is how the new line character (chr(13) or chr(10)) is shown. I don't think there is much you can do.
One thing to try is see if the following works
    textitem := textitem || '

  • Weird square box mysteriously appears

Occasionally after editing a photo in ACR and opening it in Photoshop CS4, a square box appears in the photo, as if I selected a small square area and darkened it using curves. Any thoughts about how to prevent this or how to get rid of the box if it happens? I am using a Mac Pro tower with the latest OS 10.6 (although I remember it happening once using OS 10.4) and the most updated version of CS4. Thanks!!

This is a very strange problem. Sounds to me like some sort of graphics card glitch more than anything else.
Is Camera RAW  genuinely rendering a square selection darker than the surrounding pixels? when you move the image around your monitor, and measure the pixels with the eyedropper is this still apparent?
Since its most likely to be what I suggested above - try turning Open GL on and off in Preferences.

  • Menu bar weird square square pixels problem

Hi I have this very weird problem and wonder if it is a software or hardware issue (i couldn't find anyone who have the same issue).
After using my iMac for a while this weird pixel problem on the menu bar appears.
The problem (it is small but you can see the magenta areas).
This is the enlargement of the problem.
When I change applications/click on the menu bar, it disappears but reappears after a while. This problem started just recently and I'm wondering if any of the Apple updates might have affected it.
Does anyone know what's happening? Do I need to bring it for repair?
    Thanks.

They look like Atari Space Invaders "Quick shoot them down"
    Sorry I couldn't help it!
Try switching to and from Translucent Menu Bar in the Desktop Preference, Disk Utility / Repair Permissions and Restarting your iMac.

  • Weird behavior under Mavericks - permissions?

I am administering one of the new Mac Pro cylinders for a design team to test. We are licensed up to Adobe Master Collection CS5.5 and almost all of the problems I have had with this new Mac and Mavericks seem to be permissions related. If anyone else has some insight that might help, it would be greatly appreciated.
We intend to run our systems with users that do not have administrator privileges. The goal during software setup and installation was to keep as many items as possible out of the User Library folder (and on the Macintosh HD/Library) so that applications and plugins would be accessible to any user created on the machine.
Adobe Creative suite 5.5 has mysteriously gone in and out of an Error 16 Configuration Error between the two user accounts on this machine. Sometimes, the applications work fine, but once the error appears, the machine needs to be reset. This did not seem to be tied to whether the account was an administrator account, it seemed to be more dependent on which user logged into the machine first after a restart.
We also depend on Adobe's RED Epic Importer to import RED camera footage directly to After Effects. This works perfectly fine on 2012 Mac Pros running 10.7, but when set up on Mavericks, RED files only appear accessible to the administrator account.
Incidentally, this importer has a strange installation method - you have to view the package contents of the After Effects application itself and replace components inside the folders. I worked for a whole afternoon trying to figure out what the correct permissions needed to be and how to set them correctly (including logging in as the Root user and changing them). Even after being pretty sure I had permissions matching the other components inside the folder, I would log into our user account and see the installed components had a size of zero bytes. I eventually got the file size to show by copying the components with the corrected permissions to a shared drive and then re-installing them under the user account and authenticating as the admin. Even after this, After Effects did not recognize R3D RED files in the user account, only the administrator.
I keep wondering if there is some other component the system is depending on that HASN'T had permissions updated to work correctly. Adobe seemed stumped and was not very helpful, and even so, it does seem more like an OS permissions problem.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, even out of the oridnary ones, they can sometimes lead to the right answer.

    Hey Daddy D!
I have an article for you here that can explain some of the behaviors you are seeing in Mavericks:

Specifically, I would take care to review the sections titled “Working with the menu bar,” and “Using Mission Control to organize windows and full-screen apps.” Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

now im trying uninstall my graphic driver and i will directly download latest version of the driver. so dont need any update for now. i hope it works.
    OK.
If reinstalling still fails, follow this guide: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=167763.msg1227914#msg1227914   and possibly vBIOS update will fix the issue.

  • Mavericks download and Install on 10.6.8

    Hello All,
I am facing weird behavior for Mavericks download on my 2007 iMac. I have checked and it is matching the requirements given by the Mothership.
However, I have now downloaded it twice and the process fails to create the appropriate file in Applications directory.  I am left with the .pkg file and Retry dowload message.
The appstore purchases window has entry for OS X but without the Download button. This entry is removed once i click on Retry OR Cancel. The temp directory also vanishes.
I checked the MD5 hash on both the .pkg files that were downloaded and they are the same -- so in my view the download was good (all of 5.29 gb).
If I try to run the .pkg file, i get error while selecting the partition - it recognizes only the bootable partition for install.
Changing the .pkg ext to .app gives error for Classic application support.
So, I need answers / comments for
    a. Why is the download in .pkg format for me ?
    b. Why does it not recognize the empty partition for install (the method was suggested for Lion or ML earlier).
    c. How do i test drive Mavericks before I take the decision to upgrade.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, Just to update.  While I did not find answers to above questions, I did manage to install Mavericks using the downloaded package. It took  bit of command line skills to do it.
Essentially, I had to extract the dmg files from pkg file using 'pkgutil' command. Once I had the dmg, I created a USB bootable for mavericks and using that installed it on a separate partition for test drive. As of now, it seems to be working well. I have been able to run OpenOffice (3.x and 4). However, my HP printer des not work and HP has not posted a driver yet for my series.
All in all, I think I will wait for the major update on 10.9 before upgrading 10.6.8.

  • Safari / App Store crashing after mavericks update

Weird stuff after Mavericks update.  Internet connection is fine, Chrome works perfect.
Safari attempts to open webpage, but shows 6-9 white boxes surrounded by green border in the upper left hand corner of the page.  The webpage will show up, then safari crashes.  If I disable Javascript, then smaller boxes show up, but safari is usable.
App Store will also open, but shows nothing.
Disk Utility has a bunch of Open Error 1 and Open Error 5
    Any suggestions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • [dwm-6.0] systray looking weird

After some time I spent figuring how patches work, I finally managed to compile dwm from source.
Only patches I have applied are systray and status colors. Nothing more.
But I had to change sel and norm to color[0], because they are declared as color in status colors patch.
It works, but I get no icon at all, just some weird square right to conky. Those lines are at 600 and 2340.
    How to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Local Sync of Calendar etc not working on Mavericks

I upgraded to Mavericks back when it was first released, but after discovering the unpleasant surprise that Apple secretly disabled local syncing of Calendar/Reminders/Notes, I had to wipe my MBP and reinstall the old OS from a backup. (My company prohibits cloud-based products of any kind.)
Recently an Apple employee told me that Apple had restored local sync in the newest version of Mavericks, so I upgraded again (this time to 10.9.4). Though it appears the local sync option has been restored, it's not actually working.
Mavericks recognizes all my Calendar data that existed on the MBP, but when I connect my iPhone to my MBP and sync it, no new Calendar events sync. (I created a new event on the MBP and a new event on the iPhone. Neither event synced with the other device.)
Oddly, the Reminders app on the MBP is showing some very old Reminder lists -- none of which are currently on my iPhone. And all of the Notes that were previously in Mail came over to the Notes app on the MBP, but when I created a new Note on the MBP and a new Note on the iPhone, neither Note synced with the other device.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Trashing my Calendar prefs and restarting. The MBP recreated all the Calendar events but still won't sync new ones. (Plus — same problems with Notes and Reminders)
There's a System Pref that wasn't on my previous OS called Internet Accounts. I've played around with the checkboxes on various email accounts I have, but that hasn't gotten any new Calendar events (or anything else) to sync locally.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried to amend my previous post, but I got an error message saying I'm "not allowed" to edit it.
I solved the Calendar sync issue — for some reason iTunes had turned off all the Sync options. That's a weird default for Mavericks. Anyhow, turning them back on got Calendar events to sync.
But still no syncing on Reminders or Notes.
