Weird Sustain Pedal issues.

Recently upgraded to Mainstage 2 on Macbook, OSX 10.6.2. At my studio I use a first-generation Roland Fantom as a controller, and at gigs I use an ancient Roland MKB-300. Both are transmitting MIDI via M-Audio Uno USB interface (w/ most recent driver upgrades).
The sustain pedal doesn't work when I'm using the MKB-300 with Mainstage 2, but when I use Fantom, it works. Sustain pedal works fine with either controller in Mainstage 1. Naturally I assumed there was something different in the MIDI controller data being sent from the MKB-300, but I checked them by recording sus pedal controller data from both into Logic and looking at them in the list editor window, and the controller data is exactly the same for both- MIDI ch 1, cont #64, press down=127, release pedal=0.
Again, either keyboard works fine in Mainstage one. And I don't have any trouble with MIDI note on/off data. Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on here?
Thanks,
Mitchell

I figured it out... this is so freaking strange. My Roland MKB-300 controller spits out a controller #123 message anytime all keys are released- that's an "all notes off" controller message that kills anything regardless of sustain pedal. Chalk it up to VERY early MIDI implementation (1986).
My totally ghetto solution was to tape down the highest note on the keyboard so it always thinks something is down. Anyone have any idea how to filter controller #123 messages in Mainstage???

  • Sustain pedal in Logic 8

    Hello,
I am from Russia. Recently i upgraded my OS to Leopard and my sustain pedal in Logic 8 stopped working. Can anyone please help me with advice? What can i do about it?!
    Thank you.

I face the exact same issue: I am playing through a Korg SG-1D in Logic Pro 8 and have a MacBook Pro running Leapord, and the sustain pedal does not record sometimes. It is finnicky--sometimes it does record sustain information, sometimes it doesn't. The event shows up in the transport (i.e: it is receiving the command from the sustain pedal), but notes do not sustain. It doesn't sustain notes in any instrument--piano or anything else.
Sometimes if I quit logic for the night and fire it back up in the morning it will work then, but this is working less and less.
I have been inserting "sustain" events by manually post-recording, but this is a big pain. I have a film score I need to finish by the end of the week, so the sooner the help the better!!!
    thanks!

  • How can I set up a sustain pedal in Logic 9?

I have scoured the forums and Logic Help pages for anything that can help me hook up my sustain pedal in Logic.
I have a Korg Kontrol49 midi keyboard with two pedals hooked up to it; a "Switch" and "Pedal". In all my previous programs, such as Reason 4 and Cubase 5, the "Switch"-pedal worked as my sustain. I never had to configure it because the program automatically figured that out as the sustain is usually set to Control #64.
But not in Logic - I never get a sustain on any of my Instruments using either of my pedals. I have clicked on and off on #Control #64 off (sustain)" in Midi Preferences to no avail. Nor I cant find any liturature that lends me a hand in guiding me how to set it up.
Can anyone out there assist me with this?
    Thanks-a-million

Im all for the dumb questions, because its probably a dumb mistake I did.
I have checked that both sus ped and exp. ped are fully plugged in.
Neither pedals show up in the Midi meter in the transport.
I dont know how to set a patch for the keyboard, but if both pedals work in other programs (i.e. Reason), wouldn't it not be an issue with a Logic configuration and not in the keyboard's setting? (Unless I have a separate Logic setting that loads automatically when it detects Logic is booted. I dont know how that would work though.)
Thank you for your prompt help, though. Any other ideas?

  • Any ideas on how to control the amount of sustain pedal data that Logic Pro 9 records? Every time I press the sustain pedal down, it records 4 sustains. Same thing when I release the pedal. Thanks!

This gets confusing, you have two Macs with different issues and two pedals with different issues? First let's sort out what's what. So, do the issues come from the pedals or from the Mac software? To find out, simply switch the pedals and note their behaviour. No change: it's the software, change: it's the pedals (imho the most likely scenario).
Second, what kind of pedals are they? Can you name the type of pedal too? The Yamaha what and the Mgear which?
Third, with the 4 fold data problem, are the doubled events simultaneous, or a few ticks apart, or more?
Also, you have no MIDI keyboard? Are the pedals both "standalone"?
I think you have to sort this problem at its' source, which are the pedals. You could, if push really comes to shove, perhaps create some sort of ingeneous/elaborate transformer setup in the environment to filter the extra messages, although with the 4/4 sustain events that may not even be possible. With the "stepped" events you could set up a filter to just block all events with values 20-110 or so.
But much better would be to configure the pedal(s) correctly.

  • Sustain pedal not working in Mainstage only with Kontakt 4 plugin

I can't get Kontakt 4.0.2 to sustain notes when instantiated in Mainstage.
The sustain pedal works fine for Kontakt in stand alone mode, and for the same patch/channel strip in Logic 9, but not when in a channel strip in MainStage.
I have the pedal mapped properly (same channel, same keyboard selected, same channel selected on Kontakt plugin), since all other patches work fine with said sustain pedal in Mainstage... except for the Kontakt samples.
I have tried a different controller with a different sustain pedal (again, properly mapped and channel synchronized- same channel on controller, pedal and Kontakt interface), and the same thing occurs.
I have gone into the "wrench" area of the Kontakt plugin/instrument options/controller/MIDI controller #64(Sustain Pedal) acts as". I have set this to both Pedal + CC, and Pedal w/o CC and restated Mainstage on both occasions.
Neither setting works. Again, the same settings work fine within Logic (i.e. the sustain works). I have the pedal mapped to the right keyboard and to the same MIDI channel in Kontakt, and I can see it respond on the Mainstage interface; in fact, I can play the patch fine; it just doesn't sustain!
An interesting thing is that when I press the pedal, I can see a MIDI message on Mainstage but not in Kontakt.
Have you come across this issue before? Any ideas on what's going on and/or fixes?
    Thanks.

You shouldn't have to assign it in Kontakt -- it just works. I would delete that.
A key indicator is that when you press the pedal, the MIDI message does not appear in Kontakt. That tells me your problem is in MainStage -- for some reason MainStage is intercepting that MIDI data. Therefore, the problem's not inside Kontakt's edit mode. It's somewhere in MainStage.
Sorry I can't be of more help but at least that narrows it down.

    My reply:
By the way, if you want to instantiate a Kontakt 4 patch within Mainstage, you have to create a keyboard surface in Layout mode, then assign it and map it to the keyboard you want to play that channel strip with in edit mode. If you don't map a sustain pedal object, Mainstage doesn't receive its message; therefore I am confused when you write: "You shouldn't have to assign it in Kontakt -- it just works. I would delete that."
The keyboard is mapped correctly, since I can play the Kontakt patch fine. Both wheel controllers and the sustain pedal are not getting midi data into Kontakt. As I said, everything works fine in Logic with the same set-up; so I agree, it has to be something I am missing within Mainstage...I just don't know what it is!
Has no one else had this issue on this forum?

Personally I don't think that's a solution and may not change a thing. Logic probably recognized the Akai and tried to use a stock Controller Assignment.
It's easy enough to try this without deleting the file I mentioned.
With Logic running, go to the far left Logic Pro menu, go the Preferences>  entry down near the bottom is Control Surfaces. You can Bypass, Rebuild or check what is assigned there.
Believe me... this is not time and trouble... had someone more knowledgeable than me about this particular problem answered you, you would've been on your way.

  • Sustain pedal not working with my MIDI setup

So, I'm using a Yamaha P-140 hooked up with my Macbook Pro using a Midi-USD cable. I'm mostly using it for Logic Pro X and Sibelius, and it works just fine. However when I use the sustain pedal, it's playing an E3 note and it's messing up all the sound adding a lot of reverb.
Now, this isn't a problem when I'm using the piano as it is. It's also not a problem with either Logic or Sibelius, cause when I'm testing it with the "Sound and MIDI Setup" app on Mac, the sustain pedal is recognized as one of the "hammers" on the keyboard.
I have no idea as how to fix this problem, and it's really annoying having to play super legato when I'm recording.
    Thanks in advance.
Note: The keyboard have an "AUX Pedal" input and a "Sustain pedal" input.
    USB MIDI Cable specs:
    (As written on the package)
    - Built-in driver
    - USB powered and Class Complaint for true plug & play. Just connect to a computer USB socket for automatic installation of the driver.
    - 1 in + 1 out MIDI interface; 16 MIDI input channels & 16 MIDI output channels
    - LED's indicate power on, MIDI in signal and MIDI out signal.
    - Supports Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X operating systems
    Aditional info:
Now, I've seen the event-recording in Logic for when I use the pedal, and it's picking up 2 different signals. The first one is a "Controller" (as it say under "status") with the info "Sustain", the next 2 have the status "Note" each one triggering an E3.
I looked it up and the pedal is a Yamaha FC3 half damper sustain pedal. I'm not an expert when it come to pedals, but I believe a half damper is a pedal with multiple trigger points? Giving you different amounts of sustain depending on how much you're "pressing it".
    (Position 2 1 1  19 = pedal release)

Try deleting Logic's preferences... sounds like a control surface issue.
Delete the Logic 10 preferences file AND the shared control surfaces file.
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    Press the Go button.
Remove the  com.apple.logic10.plist  file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro User Manual for details on how to do this.
If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro.
then delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
Note: Delete both files, they will be rebuilt the next time Logic runs.

  • Sustain pedal plays notes in logic express 9

    HI
I am using a Yamaha Arius piano that has 3 pedals. I have the piano plugged in via midi to usb connection. Everytime i push down the sustain pedal in Logic express it plays a note. When i look to see what it comes up as it says E3 and then depending on the pressure i place on the pedal, the number changes...
Ive tried using transformers in the environment but this did not fix the issue...
I have checked all of the connections and everything seems to be in working order when playing the piano by itself.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks so much

Hi, assign a new name to your new bouce, like "project1.aiff" instead that "project.aiff",
Then rename if you want to call it as the past bounce. cheers

  • My sustain pedal is like a key in my piano can I remove this?

Hey guys, I have a little problem. When I want record a song on my electric keyboard I connect my MIDI/USB wireless in the USB port but you I hit the sustain pedal it's like a note and the level go up to 127. So my question is can I remove the note associate to my sustain pedal and play like normally?
    Thank

I have a Yamaha P95 and had the same problem which really drove me crazy =,= I did all the researches and found that who had the similar problems are those who use Yamaha.  And the fact is that some of the cables don't work well with Yamaha.  (the $5 cable definitely has the issue. I don't know if M-calbe works but it might not work cause I saw some other posts talking about the pedal issues when coneccting some Yamaha)
So I tried to purchase a Yamaha brand MIDI/USB cable from Amazon, UX 16. Finally, it....... WORKS!!!!!! But it also took me time to find the updated driver and install it...
So you might have to download the driver from their website to see if it works on your system... cuz the CD coming with the cable doesn't work on my Mac (Guess because it came years ago)... Btw here's the link for downloading the latest driver: (If the link doesn't work you can search for it on yamaha's website as well)

  • Sustain pedal problem

Hi, this is probably a pretty basic problem but it's confusing me...
I have an Edirol PCR800 and Mainstage....that's it. When I attach a sustain pedal (and Ive tried 4 now), Mainstage sees the pedal as moving upwards when I press down on it. The result is that releasing the pedal sustains the notes instead of holding it down, and holding the pedal down stops the notes from being held, which is the opposite of what anyone would want, I'd imagine. Has anyone got any ideas as to whats happening?

I had the same issue. It worked in reverse.
My solution was on my keyboard. I could set the pedal polarity (1 or 2). That solved the problem.
If that's not a solution. The polarity of the Sustain pedals are on some keyboards calculated when it is powered up. On power up, the Sustain pedal is assumed to be in the off position. So, if you want the Sustain pedal to be off when it is not depressed, make sure not to press the pedal when you power up. To reverse the pedal polarity, just press and hold the pedal when you power up.
Not sure if that'll work on yours, but worth a try.

  • How can I use the sustain pedal of my MIDI keyboard (novation launchkey)?

How can I use the sustain pedal of my MIDI keyboard (novation launchkey) in a normal way? The tone holds itself and I stop this by using the sustain pedal? I need help

There are two types of sustain pedal... One's with  + polarity and ones with - polarity
The sustain pedal you are using, has the oppostie polarity from the standard.. which means when you press it it acts as if it is not pressed and vice versa...
Unfortunately, unlike a lot of keyboards...  the Launchkey doesn't provide a setting that allows you to correct this issue... which means that unless the pedal you are using has a built in polarity switch...(In which case power down your keyboard, unplug the pedal and select the opposite setting to what is set now and then plug it back in and power up your keyboard) your sustain pedal is the wrong type and is not compatible with the Launchkey....
Failing that, here is an example of a sustain pedal that has a polarity switch so you can use it with any keyboard....

  • MAINSTAGE 2.2: Sustain pedal triggering E3 note on MainStage and making notes get stuck

Hey guys! I've been having issues recently with my MS and can't find to know why. I want to start of with a detailed list of what I'm using to know if this helps.
    - MacBook Pro OS X 10.9 (8gb RAM and intel 2.26 core 2 DUO)
    - MainStage 2.2. (32 bit)
    - Keyboard controller (I normally don't take a keyboard with me but instead use my Macbook Pro to trigger sounds through MS and use the KB just as a controller, but normally I use Yamaha Motif KB's - this actually varies!)
    - MIDI-IN and OUT to USB cable
    - Normal, regular sustain pedal (FYI, checked that polarity is on the correct possition already!)
    - Korg NanoPAD 2
    - Korg NanoKONTROL 2
    - USB splitter to connect (NanoPAD 2, NanoKONTROL 2 and MID-IN and OUT TO USB cable)
    - Apoogee Duet 2 (connected to the most powerful USB port)
So here's the issue and what I've done to try to fix it (Troubleshooting) and also, what I know that is not affecting MS as in connections, hardware and routing processes.
    ISSUE:
Every time I press the sustain pedal it triggers E3 note and it toggles between Sustain and this E3 note.
Every time I try to ASSIGN the sustain pedal in LAYOUT mode, press the ASSIGN button, hold and release the sustain pedal, it toggles between "Sustain" and "E3" noted assigned to the sustain pedal
    TROUBLESHOOTING:
    - I've made sure that the sustain pedal is connected to the right input on the back side of the KB (controller)
    - I've made sure that the polarity is correct (switched it just in case - not working still!)
    - In LAYOUT mode I ASSIGNED the pedal correctly to my sustain pedal (when it is on "Sustain" it is still triggering this E3 note)
    - I've tried going through "ASSIGNMENTS & MAPPINGS" down to "PORT 1 USB2.0-MIDI" wich is the MIDI port that is shown on my MacBook Pro, and verify that it is showing "64 (Sustain)" as the mapped assignment and "SEND TO ALL" parameter (so it is triggered through all of my sounds)
    - I've tried going to WORKSPACE and manually MAP PARAMETER the sustain pedal, but when I do this, it still shows that E3 note is being triggered.
    - I've tried a clean boot of MS (same thing)
    - I've tried a OS X clean boot (same thing)
    - I've tried changing the MIDI-IN and OUT USB cable (3 different ones)
    - I've tried connecting ONLY (NO SOUND DEVICE or Korg Nano devices nor USB splitter device connected) the MIDI-IN and OUT USB directly to the computer and into different USB ports (still the same thing!)
    - I've tried different sustain pedals
What are your thoughts guys? Do any of you guys know how to fix this or have exp. this before? This is really strange and I'm actually thinking that it might be my Macbook Pro USB ports that are going crazy! One thing that I noticed is that sometime ago the MIDI DEVICE that was shown on "MIDI STUDIO" in System preferences was named after "USB MIDI CABLE" and now it is not available to use. Instead, now it is showing as "USB2.0-MIDI" and that's the one that is being used by my Mac. An interesting thing is that when I try "TEST" in MIDI STUDIO and play my KB, it does nothing .... no sound is heard as a MIDI signal being fed to my Mac.
PLEASE HELP! Need to fix this URGENTLY!!!
    Blessings!
    H

If we can't figure out why it's sending a note on command, let's just find a way to make it stop. First, go to layout mode, select the sustain pedal, and make your settings manually(don't press the assign button). Set it as you described above.
In Layout mode: (when toggled to sustain pedal)
    Screen Control Inspector
    Hardware Input
    Device: Port 1 USB2.0-MIDI
    Channel: Channel 1
    Type: Press/Release
    Number: 64 (Sustain)
    MIDI thru: Automatic
    Send Value to: None
Next, copy the sustain pedal control(the easiest way is command>C then command>V). It will look like this:
Select the new pedal and manually set it to:
In Layout mode: (when toggled to sustain pedal)
    Screen Control Inspector
    Hardware Input
    Device: Port 1 USB2.0-MIDI
    Channel: Channel 1
    Type: Note On/Off
    Number: C-2
MIDI thru: Do not pass Through
    Send Value to: None
The idea is to send that unwanted note the the lowest note(0) so it won't be in the way. I don't know if it will work for you, but it's worth a try.

  • Support for sustain pedal?

    hi all,
i've got a keyboard (midi) and to my extreme surprise i realize it does not have a sustain pedal input...weird huh? anyway I was wondering if any ol' keyboard with midi and a sustain pedal will work. I know the midi stuff works, i'm just wondering if i pick up another one i mean does the sustain through the keyboard work, or what, someting special through mac? I think we can all agree it can be pointless in some cases to play without sustain on a piano.

    SUSTAIN PEDAL SOLUTION
I JUST FOUND A WAY TO KEEP THE SUSTAIN WHEN YOU SAVE THE FILE
JUST OPEN THE SEQUENCER AND PLAY
AND THEN JUST GO TO "FILE" EXPORT AND THEN YOU SAVE IT AS A WAV FILE
YOU'LL HAVE A FILE WITH THE SUSTAIN
    HOPE THIS HELP PEOPLE

  • 7.2.1 EXS24 trashes notes when sustain pedal used

I have an M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 connected to a Mac Mini Core Duo through a USB port. A Presonus FirePod is my audio interface.
When I play a Chopin piano piece using the EXS24 Yamaha stereo grand piano, using the sustain pedal as I normally would, after a short while I start hearing pops and clicks and the notes are jumbled.
I can play the same Chopin song while the synthesized piano is used, using the same sustain, and not have any pops and clicks.
If I move the track I just recorded with the synthesized piano over the the EXS24 Yamaha Grand, it plays it just fine.
What am I doing wrong? I just moved from a 400Mhz G4 1GB RAM running Logic 4.8 - and I didn't have any issues playing with sustain using its EXS24.
Actually, the 1st time I played the track back on EXS24 (recorded with synthesized piano), it seemed ok, but no - it is messing up royally. I looked at the 'system performance' audio and disk i/o. The audio bar hits the top - and this is on just a single EXS24 instrument.
I must be doing something wrong - I had multiple EXS24 instruments playing with Logic 4.8 on the G4. Please tell me this isn't true!

I found a setting that greatly helped.
I turned "larger disc buffer" to 'off' (the manual says it defaults to off, but it was set to 'on' without my help) - this greatly lessened audio cpu load with EXS24 for the single stock Yamaha grand that came with Logic Pro.
I am no longer having a problem when just a single EXS24 Yamaha grand is playing or being recorded - I'll have to experiment a bit more to see what happens with multiple tracks.
Is there a tech note somewhere on setting up the Mac & Logic for best performance?

  • GarageBand for iPad - sustain midi issue

    Hi,
I am using GB for iPad and getting a lot of use out of it. Lots of fun! I have hooked up the iPad via a MIDI cable and USB camera widget to my casio electric piano. I've been recording music successfully, until....
I've recorded a solo piano track. In playing I've used the sustain pedal. The sustain pushes and releases have been picked up by GB. The track plays back perfectly in GB for iPa, sustains and all....but....when the track is exported to iTunes as an m4p the sustain pushes seem to cut short the notes instead of prolong them. Playback of the m4p sounds odd as the notes are cut short, ending abruptly.
    Very odd.
As I say, it appears only to be the case with the m4p exports from GB that have the issue, playback in GB itself is fine.
Any ideas? do I need to upgrade something or does anyone know of a fix?

    Ok, this is strange.
So I thought I would try exporting the m4p from GB again - just to see what would happen. I know, only fools do the same thing twice and expect a different result - right? Well, not this time. It worked ok. The sustains now export in the m4p and don't cut the notes short.
So, whether this helps anyone with the same issue in future I can only hope. What I did was this:
    - having exported the track initially as m4p and discovered in iTunes (on my computer) that is was faulty, I deleted it from iTunes.
    - I went back to GB for iPad and opened the song again (i had saved it to export it as m4p).
    - I played the song back and checked once more that playback in GB was fine - and it was.
    - I opened the settings panel and altered the track echo. It was at the zero position, and I moved it to about 25% or so.
    - I saved the song and exported it again as m4p to iTunes.
    - viola, it worked.
Maybe I did something here to rectify it. well, obviously I did. but who knows what. There must be logic to it, the iPad is a computer after all...

  • When will MainStage get the EVB3 sustain pedal fix that's in Logic?

shouldn't there be a fix for this problem in a MainStage release?
right now the behavior is fixed in Logic, but not in MainStage...
that the fix doesn't come out simultaneously for both hosts... plausible, but not at all?
please don't hammer me for wanting a sustain pedal to work in a B3 emulator. It's for live work, and I layer pianos and organs quite effectively... :-)
    Weird...

    Hi
Some old keyboards use a diferent polarity in the sustain. I'm not sure you can set a diferent sustain polarity at LP. If not, use another sustain pedal, (you'll see it won't work right in you DX7), but you can fix it changing the sustain pedal polarity at you DX7.
    Hope it helps you
