Weird thing with capturing DV and square pixals

Hiya,
How come when I capture DV and play the capture scratch file in QT its 768 x 576
but then I export the file as a quicktime movie its 720 x 576?
I know its something to do with square pixals but why does it change it and is there a way so I can watch back exported quicktime movies in the correct aspect ratio ?

Are they tapes you shot? Could they be PAL? Sometime PAL or a tape recorded in a non-standard speed will only show up fuzzy in FF. Not sure if 8mm had an LP speed and whether all Hi-8 camcorders will play that back.

  • Weird problem with capturing old 8mm tapes with my hi8 camera

    ok, so i'm trying to capture an old 8mm tape from like 1995 i think, and when i capture nothing shows up. this might be a problem with the tape though because it won't even play on the camera. however, the weird thing is that when i push fastforward while it plays a very fuzzy image shows up of whats on the tape, but then when i play it in real time again it just shows blue screen. This is happening consistently with a few other tapes from the same time. Is this happening because the tapes are shot? or is there something i'm not doing right?

  • Weird Thing With Exporting As Quicktime Movie

    Ok, so this has been happening for months now, but I didn't really think anything of it until now. Whenever I export a movie as a Quicktime Movie, it exports it as 2 files, the regular movie file, and the same file with "-av1" behind it. The second part has to be there in order for it to play. What's stranger is that when I put them into a folder, the movie no longer plays properly. What is up with this?

    I have just experienced the -av1 phenomena for the first time.
    I have been exporting to QT movies regularly using the same internal and external drives for months - no changes, no incorrect formatting. I have used those exported movies to create One-Step DVDs in iDVD for display and distribution. This -av1 file thing is keeping me from doing that.
    The only diff with this project (and, in fact, it's a new Sequence in a Project that has successfully been exported (without the companion file)) is that this sequence had .aiff music files some of which were from iTunes (downloaded/protected).
    I thought that might be the problem, so I created mp3s (by burning to disk and re-importing) and replaced the aiff's in the timeline - it still insisted on creating -av1 files with the QT Movie.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • K9A2 Platiunum - 'weird' things with Network and USB are happening...

    Hi All,
    My System specs are:
    MSI K9A2 Platinum MB
    OCZ Technology 2x2GB 240DIMM PC2-6400 Gold running at 2.2V
    AMD Phenom 9500
    2 x Samsung SATA DVD Writer SH-203B/BEBN
    GeForce 8800GTX 768MB PCIE DVI
    Coolermaster Cosmos case
    Seagate 320GB SATA2 HDD ST3320620AS
    OCZ 1010 GameXstream PSU
    OS: Vista Home Premium 64
    It was quite a task getting this machine working in the first place (see my previous threads) but I have a residual issue here that I would like to put to you and see if anyone has any ideas:
    1) I noted that there seems to be something 'wrong' with my Network connection as a) my internet was very unstable on this machine ("no cable plugged in / no connection" messages) from time to time. No pattern detectable, seems to have "gone away" now; and b) my Belkin F5D7235-4 router gives me an 'amber' status light, instead of green, for the connection to the above machine. I changed the port at the router and also changed the network cable to a new one - the status light remains on amber.
    Interestingly, the status light changes to amber only once the start-up process of the PC has progressed, it is 'green' when the PC is switched off.
    2) A function of the above problem seems to be that I cannot get a network with my 2nd machine (XP SP2 based) going. I applied the patch that has to be applied when XP SP2 and Vista machines are in the same network. The two PC's saw each other once - and then never again.
    3) Had a friend over and wanted to transfer 160GB from my external WD 1TB drive (connected through Firewire 800 to the K9A2 based machine) to his laptop via USB2.0, using my Vista / MSI K9A2 Platinum based machine (specs above). After minutes of calculating the estimated time remaining it came back to me with around "5 days 7 hours remaining". Cancelled and then used my XP SP2 based machine to perform the same task and I got "1 hour, 10 minutes remaining" and it actually got done done in that time.
    Summary: I am asking myself if I have something set-up just completely the wrong way in my MSI K9A2 Plat based machine on the BIOS level regarding the on-board network card. If yes, what could that be? But then, on top, why is this really slow USB2.0 thing happening??
    I am grateful for any ideas as I feel that I have not been able to get the top performance out of my PC yet.
    Thanks to all of you for some thoughts...

  • REALLY cool and weird thing with the room light and Apple IR receiver

    I don't know if that has already been reported here or if it happens with other people. When running vista, I turn off the room's light and don't touch mac until the screen turns off. If I turn the light back on, vista automatically turns on mac's screen too... It's kinda creepy sometimes, but it's cool! I know it's related with the IR receiver, but shouldn't it recognize only Apple IR Remote's commands?

  • Album art doing weird things with iTunes 7.3.1.3

    About a week after I got this version, all my music got deleted somehow. I've added it all back, but album art is screwy. Sometimes it only shows a black square where the art should be. Other times it won't change the art to what I want it to be. These things happen regardless of whether I change many songs at once or one at a time. Is there a patch or something? I don't want to restore the iPod again...it takes way too long to rename all my songs and put them in specific playlists!!

    Hi blob2,
    Although it may not be the solution to your problem, there's been a new version of iTunes that was released a few days ago, which may provide some sort of help with this issue for you.
    The latest version is 7.3.2.6, and can be downloaded from Apple's website, here:
    Download iTunes - 7.3.2.6
    By the way, does this happen when you're trying to view the album art on your iPod, or does this just happen with your iTunes library?

    Thank you for advices!
    I did not try to downgrade freetype, but I guess Microsoft fonts look good with older versions of freetype because there is BYTECODE_INTERPRETER enabled. Here is quote from SuSE documentation:
    In order to get a good rendering of the MS TrueType Core Fonts, the BYTECODE_INTERPRETER setting should be enabled in freetype2. The freetype people do recommend not to use the bytecode interpreter anymore in favor of their auto-hinting code. But while it is true that you will achieve good rendering with most of the free fonts, this is quite ugly for the MS TrueType Core Fonts.
    Well.. I do not want to enable features that are not recommended by developers :-)
    What about antialiasing - I do not want to enable it for small font sizes. And, of course, antialiasing is the thing that was invented not for fixing broken fonts rendering.
    I decided to replace Tahoma with Verdana everywhere to solve this problem :-) Unfortunately, I coud not do this with fontconfig - debug output from freetype shows this font list after replacement:
    "Verdana"(w) "Times New Roman"(s) "Thorndale AMT"(w) "serif"(s) ""(s)
    Note letter "w" after Verdana. I do not know what these letters mean, let's suppose 'w' is for 'weak' and 's' is for 'strong'. Firefox (or freetype) ignores 'weak' fonts when there are 'strong' fonts in the list. And all substituted fonts always have 'weak' marking... Thus, Firefox displays Times New Roman (or any font that was set as default in Firefox) instead of Verdana.
    The final solution for me was to take fontforge, make a copy of Verdana and rename this copy to Tahoma. Now I have Tahoma replaced with nice rendered Verdana everywhere
    But the question is still open - is it possible to take broken Tahoma and make same looking font that would not be broken?

  • Weird issue with to dos and notifications

    I am running iCal 2.0.3, on 10.4.3, on my 12" PowerBook 1.5 GHz, with 768 MB of RAM. I use iCal quite a bit, and am currently running two calendar groups with three sub-calendars each. Lately, I am having to quit and re-start iCal a lot. Here's why: when the machine comes back from sleep, notifications will pop up, but I can't edit them, close them, anything, really. If I quit iCal and re-start it, everything is fine for a while. This seems to happen at least twice a day. I have verified and repaired permissions, checked the disk, run my maintenance scripts, etc, and the problem still exists. The only thing I do that is perhaps a tad out of the ordinary is run the machine connected to an external monitor at home, with the lid closed, and then on the native display on my desk at work. It gets plugged and uplugged at least twice a day.
    Anyone have any thoughts on this? It's really become quite maddening. Thanks.

    Update:
    I am now unsure if the problem was actually solved, or just unnoticed for a couple days. It has now returned, but I have a greater understanding now of exactly what is happening.
    Here's the deal. At work, I use my PowerBook by itself, but at home, I use it with a Samsung SyncMaster 172N display, usually with the PB closed, but occasionally I span, and use both displays. The problem seems to occur only after disconnecting or reconnecting the display. Originally, I thought that that iCal was not responing for some reason, but after some frenzied clicking around, I noticed that when I clicked on a notification info window, the calendar drop down opened up, even though I wasn't clicking anywhere near it. Somehow, the location of the info window on the display is not jiving with the location as perceived by Swearingen, my PowerBook, internally, if you know what I'm saying. Actually, I should say it seems like the contents aren't jiving, as the silver bar at the top and bottom of the info window are still clickable, and the window can be dragged around. In fact, dragging the window around a bit, or even just clicking on the silver bar seems to "realign" the contents of the window, and then everything is fine, and I don't have to quit iCal and reopen the app to get things happening again. So, I am not sure how to solve this problem, but I now have a better way to deal with it. I am hoping this issue will be dealt with in a future release of iCal. I wanted to post further information on this to make it clearer in case anyone else runs into this issue.

  • Weird Behavior with Macbook  pro and 30" screen

    When trying to iSync my phone via Bluetooth my Bluetooth mouse takes on strange sluggish behavior and makes it virtually unusable. At this point I’ll flip open the lid on the Mac book and use the track pad. When I shut the lid again I lose the picture on the big screen only for it to return some seconds later when I hit the Bluetooth keyboard the picture comes back then after 5-6 seconds disappears. It’s almost like it get’s stuck in some sort of hibernation cycle mode.. The only way to solve it , so far is to open the lid and restart then close the lid before it boots up again. The exact same thing happens if I unplug the power cord. Sometimes as happened today you open the lid and nothing , you actually have to flip the battery out for a moment then reboot as above.
    Providing I don’t open the lid or remove the power cord the computer and display work just fine
    I’m guessing there is something I can do in the settings, but I’m not sure what it is. But as you can imagine it’s a real pain
    Any pointers or ideas would be welcome and any explanation as to why the mouse goes nuts when I establish a connection between the computer and the phone( The sluggishness remains even after I’ve closed Bluetooth on the phone)
    Thanks
    Symon

    Dang, I assume correctly that it doesn't work as advertised for you? I have a MacBook 13.3-in with a Dell 20-in display attached as extended desktop and when I pan, I eventually can only zoom in to the bottom of the screen. I can only pan horizontally.
    Not as advertised at all I hope someone can fix that.

  • [SOLVED]Weird conflict with official packages and aur packages

    Hi. I have enchant-zemberek installed on my system. It is my package that i'm maintaining at AUR. Yesterday i tried to install poedit which depends on enchant. Weirdly altoguh enchant-zemberek provides enchant; pacman tried to remove enchant-zemberek and instead install enchant. Otherwise it won't let me install poedit. I have updated enchant-zemberek PKGBUILD and pacman let me install poedit without forcing me to install enchant. Here is what i have in my first PKGBUILD before update:
    replaces=("enchant")
    provides=("enchant")
    conflicts=('enchant')
    And after updating;
    replaces=("enchant=${pkgver}")
    provides=("enchant=${pkgver}")
    conflicts=('enchant')
    Now, i'm wondering while an AUR package have different package name than the official one why pacman tries to replace it? Why PKGBUILD needs package version in provides tag? Say, if i want to keep my own my-abc-1.0-1.i686.pkg.tar.xz but official package abc-1.1-1.i686.pkg.tar.xz released; must i keep my package only in Ignores array? Should i report this as a bug?
    Last edited by tarakbumba (2011-04-07 09:52:41)

    No, its not a bug. poedit depends on gtkspell which depends on enchant>=1.5.0 - your original custom enchant package did not provide any specific version of enchant, so pacman pulled in the repo package instead to satisfy the versioned dependency. As you have built your package with replaces=enchant, pacman also honours that.

    Removing libatasmart is not really an option for me because I use Gnome and libatasmart is necessary for automounting as I understand.
    Does anyone have any advices? What else can I provide for you to understand the problem? Is it a bug and how to file it? Where can I read more about problems like this?
    Thank you for any help.

    After some time I recognized that I went into the wrong direction before. I got, that my real problem is not libatasmart, but the module sr_mod which is timing out and causing ksoftirqd to run with 100% cpu-usage of one processor thread (which is very nice, because otherwise the kernel would crash because of all the soft interrupts). So I went on and removed sr_mod temporarily.
    rmmod sr_mod
    This works pretty well for me since I can suspend now as much as I want and the system wakes up after all. I still get this small message:
    ata1: ACPI set timing mode failed (status=0x300b)
    after resume, but this seems not to be a bigger problem.
    The more interesting thing is, that you can not mount CDs or DVDs if you remove sr_mod from the kernel, because that is what I think it is made for. As I still like to use this type of media, it is pretty annoying, that I can't
    modprobe sr_mod
    after a resume, because than I get a lot of small soft interrupts and sr_mod is timing out again.
    Btw: I use a laptop with a SIS 966 chipset. Might that cause all the trouble? Can anyone think of any further reading or trying or bugreporting?

  • Weird effect with my "spaces" and "expose"

    All of a sudden today, my expose started acting strangely. It's difficult to explain but here it goes:
    I have my spaces set up so that if I move the cursor to the lower left corner all open applications are displayed. But today for some reason, that is no longer working. Now only the application I am working in is open. Furthermore, the other ones are sort of "hidden" down below the dock. They aren't "in" the dock though.
    To get on of my other application windows to appear, I have to click on the icon for the application in the dock, ie the original application icon, not the application window. The application window is not in the dock, unless I minimize its window.
    But when I click on the application icon, the window will re-appear, re-open, and a little white square box with a hooked arrow appears briefly as the window re-opens.
    I hope this is making sense.

    Yes I messed with the preferences for fifteen minutes but I couldn't find anything that looked like what is happening on my computer. I'm using ox 10.5.8.
    It just started doing this out of nowhere, as far as I can tell. You know how you can have several opens open at once. Well I can't do that now. Only one at a time, and all the others disappear, they don't go to the dock, but to this hidden place. I can't access them unless I click on the original application icon in the dock.

The next time I tried to turn it on, I got the sad ipod picture followed by a battery picture. The sad ipod is still there but the battery picture is gone now. Plus, when I try to turn it on it starts making this weird clicking noise. I've tried to manually do the disc thing or whatever it's called, and it didn't work. Normally, I would just drop it off to a repair shop, but the nearest one is in another city. Any suggestions???
    P.s. a week before all this it locked up one day. came back on after the batter drained.

    I'll cut to the chase: the clicking hard-drive noise means your disk is done. You can either replace the CF microdrive, or buy a new iPod (assuming you're out of warranty). Since I like the Mini design, I decided to do the former; checkout the article I wrote about my experience.
