Weird things happening on this Mac Mini

Hey all,
Got an intel mac mini with tiger on it. We have some weird things going on here.
There is a black box that floats around and on most occations it goes around what his highlighted. I tried to see if this was an accessability option, but couldnt find anything on it.
Also, in the Apple menu, i have 2 restarts, 2 shutdowns, & 2 logouts.
Any clue on whats going on?

Hi Brian,
in order to fix the duplicate problem you have to reset the launch service database. Download Cocktail, OnyX or Tiger Cache Cleaner, they should fix it for you.

  • Weird things happening to my Mac - Could really be a Virus on the Mac?

    Hallo everyone out there,
I'm making this post hoping I can get some information to solve my issue.
I did search on the forum and on the net for a possible solution but with no results.
I apologize in advance in case I miss some related/important post.
Please forgive my english since is my second language.
    *The MAC:*
    HD 1: OS 10.5.4
    2x3 Ghz Quad-Core
    4 Gb 667 DDR 2
    ATI RAdeon 1900XT
    Double Monitor System
    External Maxtor HD (firewire)
    HD 2: Win Xp SP2
    Firewall: Little Snitch
    Ethernet/Wireless Modem
    Backup: TimeMachine
    *The Issue:*
First boot of the day got an alert message from the firewall: "the settings have been changed"
Right Click: the usual menu doesn't stay on but it fades away just after less then 1 sec.
Top Bar: can't access the different menu on the top bar, the menu fades away just after less then 1 sec.
Utilities Folder: it's gone. is not in the APP folder anymore. Keyboard shortcut doesn't work
Dock: question marks instead of APP icons
System Pref: Can't access the system preferences
    What i did:
Delete some apps and delete some files from the desk
    Empty the bin
Shut down the Mac holding the power button
    Switch on the system again
AFter that the top bar menu was working fine, but still can't access the system preferences and even the MORE INFO button didn't work.
Right Click worked for 3 minutes only and then again the menu issue
Got some monitors flashing and filckering (never had a problem)
Can't insert my admin passoword tring to change some settings: the letters are fine but pushing numbers on the keyboard make the system beeping.
After that i Restore a 5 days old backup with time machine.
Back on the desktop but the problems are still there.
I did try to unplug everything and then plug one item at the time but with no success.
The windows system is running fine -.-'
    I download mp3 from Beatport.
I do use Azureus for movies.
Recently i opened some .ppt files (the source should be secure though)
    I'm not the onl
I would really aprreciate any kind of help you might want to give.
    Thx in advance for that.

Harden your router. Update the firmware and add some rules. Little Snitch should help. Run ClamXav and/or Intego demo VirusBarrier X5. Leopard Cache Cleaner includes ClamXav.
    http://www.northernsoftworks.com/leopardcachecleaner.html
    http://www.intego.com/
When you use Azureus you basically broadcast your IP to others.
By your restore, it doesn't sound like you keep emergency bootable backups, internal on another drive, and off line 'as needed' Firewire boot drive.
I doubt it is malware (people use "virus" to cover things that really are not a virus, like worms, trojan horses, and rootkits).
Boot from DVD or another drive and run Disk Warrior (after you run Disk Utility). Have you repaired your boot drive booted from another hard drive? tried deep cleaning cache folders? created a new test user account?
Setup an emergency system, not from backups, on a newly formatted drive. And pull your old drive first. Installing software from an original distribution disc to an empty hard drive, which is called a "clean install," is a best practice recommended by security organizations, such as NIST and US-CERT.

  • Is this MAC Mini good for gaming?

I love to play games, and my love is the sims 3! I' am wondering if this mac mini with these specs can run smoothly TS3 + expansions:
    2.5GHz Mac mini
    2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    8GB memory
    500GB hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    OS X Mountain Lion
Plus I have an external hard drive with 1TB where I plan to install my games!

Here are The Sims 3 system requirements:
    FOR MAC OS X
Mac OS X 10.5.7 Leopard or higher
    Intel Core Duo Processor
    2 GB RAM
ATI X1600 or Nvidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100.
At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games
This game will not run on PowerPC (G3/G4/G5) based Mac systems, or the GMA 950 class of integrated video cards.
So a new low-end Mac Mini will be more than fine. I'm playing Starcraft 2 and Empire: Total War (Gold Edition) on my late-2012 Mini with a 2.6GHz processor and 16gb of RAM runs them fine.
Spring for the extra RAM because it's really cheap right now.

  • Weird thing happening with my iCal

A weird thing is happening with my iCal, I don't know if it's a bug... Today I was printing the months of September and October with all my appointments, and when I was checking October I have noticed that 14th was printed as Saturday and as Sunday too, and 15th became Monday, 16th became Tuesday, and so on.
But in my computer screen the calendar was correct: 14 Saturday, 15 Sunday, 16 Monday, etc.
I cannot figure out what could be happening and how to solve this.
    Any idea?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    PowerMac G4 1.5 AGP Graphics   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1 GB RAM

Today a friend of mine said that he had a similar problem with iCal when printing the month of October, and that he fixed this by changing the Time and Zone setting in System Preferences. When he changed the setting from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Buenos Aires, Argentina (the both have the same time zone) the problem was solved.
Today I did this and my problem dissapeared too. But I would like to know why is this happening.

  • MacBook won't turn on 98% of the time, help! Very weird things happening!

Hi there, any advice you have for me would me much appreciated. What happened with my Macbook is all very strange.
So, the morning before last, I was on my Macbook (which I bought in 2006 so it's on the older side, but otherwise worked great) and it was running low on battery. I was late for work so didn't plug it in before leaving. I left it open. However I have no roomates, pets, etc.
When I get home that evening, I plugged in the powercord and it wouldn't turn on. After trying a million different things, like taking the battery out, reseting the PRAM, etc, there were a few times where I got it to turn on, went through the log on screen, and was able to use my computer like normal for about 5 minutes or so, and then it would just shut off.
There were also many times when I would pres the power button and the screen would flash like it was about to turn on, and then it would make the noise that the computer makes when you're typically on 0% battery and it shuts down. Later in the night, when the computer was closed but plugged into the power outlet, it was by itself (meaning I wasn't pressing anything) making the noise that it was restarting. It made that noise about every 30 seconds for a few minutes. Weird.
It was also doing inconsistent things re: the sleep light. At times it was on, including when the computer was closed, and sometimes it would go from on to off. Also, the battery/charing was doing weird things. The few times I was able to get past the log in screen it showed that it was at 0%, even though the light on the adapter was green and it had been plugged in for a long time. Another time the battery icon had an X through it. I have 2 different batteries and neither one of them seemed to make a difference.
Also, yesterday I brought my computer into the Apple store and they put in a battery that was charged and it didn't seem to make a difference either. One more weird thing: when I did get the computer on in the spotlight bar it said it was indexing??
Anyways, I'm just confused/upset, etc. because I literally did nothing to the computer. I didn't drop it/spill on it, etc. I'm also frustrated because the guy at the genius bar litteraly only spent like 5 minutes looking at before he said i was SOL. He said it was the "main board" that was the problem. One of the things like I'm just confused by is if the main board really does need to be replaced, then how was I able to get the computer on and working those few times???
Sorrry this is so long, any help would be awesome!! I just don't have the money to buy a new computer, and I'm not sure it will be worth it for me to pay $300 to have it fixed when my computer's already pretty old and other things haven't been working for awhile (like my disc drive, camera). THANK YOU!!!

    EmadJamal,
the battery won’t melt because of long connection to the AC charger, although that has the potential of reducing the battery’s life.
Do you have access to a second 60 W AC charger to test with your MacBook Pro, or access to a second 13-inch MacBook Pro against which your AC charger could be tested?

  • Weird things happen in Edit view...

Some (but NOT all)of my photos do weird things when you Double-Click them to get into Edit view. Most of my photos zoom in to their appropriate sizes and are viewed 'normally', however, other photos initially come up in their normal zoomed size then in a second of two, zoom in again several times larger than they should be, and the colors will pop your eyes out, like a reverse negative or something and the photos gets all 'chunky' or 'blocky'. Fortunately, only a small number of my photos zoom in wildly like this.
Anyone seen this, have a clue what causes it and most importantly, can it be fixed to STOP doing this?
    Thanks

Well, I used to see this problem way back in the v7 days of the purple app. It's not an FCP exclusive problem, though I have seen it happen one time with Final Cut.
Glad to help you solve this one, Jamie. You can help others who come to this thread later, by marking the Helpful & Solved posts in the thread. That way, when others are searching for solutions to this problem, they can scan down quickly and easily to those posts, and see the yellow and green stars.
I've posted this request on a number of threads, both those I've helped or solved, and those I had no helpful contributions for. I'm just trying to help make the new forum as usable as ut can be.

  • Weird things happened and now No Airport Card Installed.

Last night, I was playing with my iPhone 4 hotspot with my macbook unibody. Out of the blue, my macbook freeze while connecting with wireless hotspot. So what else can I do, I hard press the button and restart my macbook. Upon restart, it show NO AIRPORT CARD INSTALLED. So now I go and check my network preference, and I did not see airport listed on the left pane, I click + to add it, but no airport option. Weird... I regret with that iphone hotspot which now created problem with my macbook airport.
    Where did it gone?
Is that hard press to shut down macbook disturbed every airport setting?
Is there anyway to get this setting back without fresh install or even reinstall OS? I have tried everything like PRAM SMU thinggy, but none work. Now I checked the preferences folder i dont see airport plist anymore.
    This is so weird.. HELP!

Pull down the Apple menu, select "About This Mac", then click on "More Info".  In the column on the left look for "Network" and within that, "AirPort".  Click on that.  If you see a lot of details about your AirPort card, then there's nothing wrong with your AirPort hardware.
It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu.
    3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    5) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".  Note that the fix this step implements may be temporary.
    6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( _not_ <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try.  Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.  If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.

  • Weird things happening with volume

When I have my headphones in and I'm listening to music the volume keeps turning itself up to its max, I then really struggle to turn it down using the volume buttons on the side of the phone, its like I am fighting it as it keeps trying to increase (weird I know).
Not only that, you know when you increase the volume and the ringer symbol appears and you can move the volume up and down? This keeps appearing on its own and it won't go until I decrease the volume, sometimes when I've done it the same thing happens with the music volume I'm fighting it and it keeps increasing!
I've tried a reset and updated software etc, I've even changed the case the phone is in but nothing has fixed it.

    Yes. YES.
I tought I was the only one going mad. I totally agree with you.
The output level is way too high. This also results in a poor resolution in the lower range of the output level, resulting in (quantization) noise. Very annoying.
The only advantage of this powerful headphones output is that the level on max output is comparable to line level, so when you plug it into an amplifier/receiver, the level is comparable to any other line level source.
Let's hope it is a software/driver issue which can be fixed... I liked my old PB G4 better in this department...

  • Weird thing happens on login diff to previous post

I get to discussions page, as guest user. so login as normal, no problems but when I have done so I still get the login page presented to me except that in the side panel I get Welcome Shirley Drabble1 but I have to go to the discussions 'thread' at the top of page if I want to find the forums list. [in small type where we normally get informed as to which forum we are in, ] So I click on that and get to the front page with all the topics listed.
I just wondered why it isn't working as it used to!
    TIA
    Shirley

OK I will try to explain again.
Straight from my browser not from an email link or anything else. Not having used Apple discussions since opening my Browser for the first time that session.
I go to the Apple discussions page. I have a link in my Firefox bookmarks in my Browser bar [just above the tabs]
    I get the login page
    I am not logged in.
I am not in any forums.
    I log in
the login shows on the right hand column.
    BUT
I am on the login page again.
to get to the list of discussions I have to click on the top of the page where I see Apple.com>support> discussions
I click on discussions to get the page of listings.
I choose iPhoto or Mail or OSX 10.4 or whichever I want to use.
    Is that normal?
That is about the clearest I can be. I just don't remember being taken back to the login page after logging in before this week.
    I may be wrong!!
It is a while since I needed to use Apple support
Though at the moment I am getting quite a few odd things happening.:-(

  • I bought this Mac mini from my company, and cannot set up my admin account. What can I do?

I bought a Mac mini from my company as they were closing our office and leaving all of us in a state of unemployment. Now I'm trying to setup the admin user account for my Girlfriend's son, for whom I purchased the unit. As he is new to mac, I'm trying to set it up for him. However when I go to the account panel in system preferences, I am unable to change anything without entering an admin password. Nor can I find a setup assistant to treat it as a new mac. What are my options from here? The Mac mini 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X Version 10.6.8

If the company did not supply you with that Mac's original System Install DVD, you really ought to purchase a Snow Leopard DVD from Apple since you are likely to need it in the future.
Please read everything that follows before continuing. If you have only the one computer you should print this for reference.
Power on or restart your Mac.
At the chime or grey screen, hold ⌘ and S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.
At the localhost:/ root# prompt, type
    fsck -fy
    and press Return.
This is a simple check for file system integrity and is optional. It may take a few minutes to complete. Be patient. If you get concerned that it has stalled press the Return key. When the integrity check completes pressing the Return key will result in the localhost prompt again.
At the localhost:/ root# prompt, type each of the following lines, exactly as written, one line at a time, each line followed by the Return key. There is a single space preceding the first "slash" ( / ) character in each line:
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    reboot
The Mac will restart, and then take you through the entire setup and registration process that a new Mac presents to a new user. Any pre-existing user accounts are still available, but without their passwords they will not be useful to you.
Do not elect to transfer your information from another Mac. When you get to the "Do You Already Own a Mac" screen, select "Do not transfer my information" and press Continue. Have your existing Apple ID and password ready - do not create a new one unless that's what you really want to do.
When it completes, log in under that new account. Use System Preferences > Accounts (or Users & Groups) to delete the User accounts that you no longer need.

  • Things happened in my Mac when I updated to 10.8.5

I bought my Macbook Pro 13" last year by the end of October. When 10.8.5 went available I immediately updated my laptop. However, I noticed that some things happened since I updated it to 10.8.5? My Guest User account had a password, I didn't do anything and I can't remove it. The time in my laptop changes even the "set date and time automatically" is ticked and is locked. My laptop doesn't connect to the remembered networks automatically unlike before and my laptop became so freaking slow???

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • A weird thing happened- licenses not remembered

I originally had a problem with getting my iphone recognized by itunes. I had created a merged library on my airport extreme connected drive of my 2 computer's itunes libraries. When using this library, I could not drag songs over to my iphone. I called Applecare, and while speaking with them, I got the spinning color wheel of death. I shut the power off on my computer and started back up again, and now all the login items that require licenses say that their 30 day trials have expired. All the settings I have reverted back to default, and any program I run acts like it is a new installation. My Applecare has expired, so they could not help me. Can anyone help me figure out what may have gone wrong?? Or what to reinstall from my time machine backup.

It's happened AGAIN ! This is getting pretty annoying. What will happen if I fill that form and submit ??
Is there no one interested ? I must not be the only one to whom this has happened, and someone should have a clue of what's going on ...
I mean, this thread has been sitting here for a few days, and still no reply from anyone ! And it's not like it all comes from my imagination. The page's URL does end in account!default.jspa, and I do get redirected to this page sometimes when I login with Safari. I'm currently using an iBook G4, 14.1", 1.33 Ghz, bought in June '05, running Tiger 10.4.5 (which means Safari 2.0.3 - 417.8).
I did login previously today (with the same iBook), and I didn't encounter this problem, but the computer didn't have my Apple ID in memory (it probably didn't have a cookie) and was running 10.4.4, so I don't know which of these conditions would trigger this behavior. And there's also the fact that my Mini, which is running 10.4.5 and has a cookie allowing it to fill my Apple ID in the box, has stopped doing it recently (haven't used it since yesterday though).
I know this is a lot of information, and that it doens't make much sense, but it does happen, and I consider it as an issue, since I have no idea of what would happen if I filled and submitted that form. Am I being given the chance to change my alias ? I doubt it. Is this a bug? I don't know. One thing is for sure though : I need help with this.

  • A weird thing happened to me when I tried to login

    Hi, it's me again !
Today, when I attempted to login, just as I usually do, I was presented with a screen requiring me to choose an avatar, etc., etc. (just as if I were creating a new account). I quit Safari, relaunched and tried again, same thing (I did check to see whether the email address/Appe ID name was correct, and I am certain to have entered the right password). Then, when I tried a third time (w/out relaunching), it logged me in automatically, without asking for a password or anything. This really is unusual, and what's more puzzling is that I can't find much sign of such a behavior of the system on the boards, which makes me think I might be an isolated case.
Can anyone offer any explanation to me ? Is it related to the fact that we can now see the total amount of posts in our Public Profile ??
