Weird trackpad issue. OSX?

This is strange and possibly a tad petty, but I cant get my trackpad tracking sensativity anything less than full. Whenever I go into System Preferences to change it, it always sets itself back to full when I close the window. Is there some sort of memory file that resets it when I close the window? Ideas?

Are you having problems with your trackpad while typing? My pointer moves around like crazy while typing. The four corners are suppose to be dead while typing but arent!
I have had two SR MBPs captured with this issue and other issues! The thing that piXXed me off was that with the first capture they ignored the trackpad issue so in goes the second one.
I feel so used...

  • 10.8.3 didn't solve my weird Trackpad issue

Ever since the 10.8.2 update I've been seeing this message hundreds of times:
    3/17/13 5:33:22.000 PM kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceGetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0x0 returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying
I noticed for my system it coincides with any changes to the usb.  I have various devices plugged into usb and even when I reduce the number to just the critical peripherals, the problem still occurs.
    • I have a Matrox Adpater that's USB powered, currently plugged into a USB2 hub
    • a Novation controller keyboard that's plugged into the same hub
    • a Drobo to the same hub
    • 2 samsung displays, each with 3 port usb hubs of their own leading into the main usb hub
    • UPS/Power conditioner to usb hub
    • keyboard & Mouse share a usb socket on the laptop
There's a number of other usb devices that remain switched off while i attempt to debug
If I unplug my display adapter from the DP port, the trackpad error shows up
If I switch on one of the controller keyboards (AC powered) the trackpad error shows up as soon as I depress the sustain pedal
Unplugging the display adapter will always disconnect the Drobo unexpectedly, sometimes with disasterous results
Everything in my system is plugged into a 2 kilowatt UPS-Power Conditioner that has onboard fault detection so everything will share the same ground
A balanced pair of lines run to the front and centre studio monitors which are powered by a power conditioner on the opposite wall, although it shares the same circuit.
As well 3 HDMI cables run from my rack to a bigscreen plugged into that same conditioner
Today was the first day i switched on one of the controller keyboards since upgrading to 10.8.3 only to discover this aggressive bug.
I can stop the trackpad error from appearing in the log just by tickling the trackpad a few times, however everything goes batshit and kicks out the keyboard from its AutoMap Server (soft-disconnect) when i run Logic and hit the sustain pedal.
I've removed all the google junk from my launch daemons etc, stripped the computer of any unneccessary kernel extensions, killed most of the stuff that launches on boot.  The extended hardware test reveals nothing, all my drives say theyre healthy, Diskwarrior found nothing. All my drivers and firmwares are up-to-date.
Perhaps someone knows of a usb diagnostic tool?  I'm not getting the voltage warnings but it wouldn't surprise me if there's noise or excessive chatter on the lines.

Hi Kallisti. You're not alone here. I'm also getting my console flooded every 4 seconds with:
    kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceGetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0x0 returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying
I suspect this error is *.kext related opposed to hardware failure, /Library/LaunchAgents/*.plist; /Library/LaunchDaemons/*.plist or /Library/StartupItems/* as so many times wrongly mentioned on forums.
I'm now on the verge of doing a fresh install and instead of restore from TimeMachine, import the items I need manually. After that I'll install my software and hardware kexts, testing trackpad usability on every step. Hopefully I'll narrow down and find *** is messing with our mbps!!

  • Weird Playback Issue...

I have this weird playback issue with iTunes for Windows. I am using Vista and I think the cause of the problem is that I am using MacDrive to access my OS X partition. But anyways, on with the problem. So the problem is that when I play a song, the song will play for like 5 seconds and then it will just go the next song. This song will do the same thing, and so-on and so-forth. Then, during this time, my Mac formatted hard drive is unavailable while iTunes is running. In "My Computer" the drive is there, but when I try to open it, Explorer freezes. Then, when I exit iTunes, it doesn't really exit. It still shows up in the task manager and when I try to end the process, it just plain doesn't end. I have to restart my computer to gain full use of it again. After the restart I can access my Mac disks, but once I start iTunes and try to play a song, I get the same thing again. And in case thats not weird enough, I can play the MP3's in WMP fine, and they will also play in iTunes fine if I actually open them, rather than just select them from my library. If I go to file open and select a song on my Mac drive, it will play fine, but then once I try to play a song from my library, I get caught in that vicious cycle. Anyone else had this problem or anything? Thanks. Also, is there an alternative program to Mac Drive that will allow me to read HFS partitions?

Post more about your situation... what format is the video, and where are you storing the video files? i.e., on a disk other than your startup disk? The adobe install is likely not the problem... I run adobe software along side FCS on about 75 workstations, and don't see issues like you describe.
Wavy? not accurate? what are you talking about?

  • Trackpad issues on Macbook Pro 15"

Hi!  I'm experiencing trackpad issues with a Macbook Pro 15" Model A1286. The battery had recently swollen after a long and productive life of about 5 years. Assuming this was a fair life/usage for a battery I have ordered a replacement from Apple.
While waiting for the replacement battery and following advice from other users, I removed the battery and have the power lead connected to prevent damage from the swollen battery.  However, the trackpad now only appears to work the cursor movements around the screen and does not register clicks without the battery in place - it's as if it's got nothing to push against.  I'm guessing that the swollen battery may have caused damage to the trackpad, but won't know until the new battery arrives.
Do I just need to be patient and wait for it's arrival or are there any suggestions of how to rectify this please?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

  • Trackpad issues on Macbook Pro, new June 2009

I have been unable to resolve a trackpad issue that began this afternoon on my Macbook Pro. The computer was new in June. I was playing an online computer game, and it seemed that drag was locked on even though I hadn't changed any settings. Movements of the mouse dragged the window. The drag would not release with 1 click, 2 finger click etc. When I tried typing, the letters selected and replaced as soon as I typed new ones. After several restarts with the same behavior occurring, I reloaded the Snow Leopard 10.6 OS. I originally installed it about 2 weeks ago, and it has been working fine until now. After the reinstallation, the trackpad will not register most clicks of the trackpad. It will register taps, but it refuses to let the user click and drag. I have Microsoft Vista installed in Boot Camp and the trackpad is operating with the same glitches on boot camp. Clicks of the trackpad do not register most of the time. If they do, I have to click very hard, and even then it doesn't always work.

  • Weird SMS Issue (iOS 4.2, iPhone 4)

So I have a weird software issue that's been going on with my new iPhone 4. Every time I get a text message and I "Slide to View" it doesn't take me to the message, rather, it marks the message as read and then takes me the main Messages pane. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's pretty annoying, along with it sometimes opening up the messages app to an unread message without letting me start at the main screen?
I do not want to restore because I will lose all of my previous text messages. Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks!!!

I've had the same problem since updating to iOS 4.2, on Vodafone network (Ireland).
I'm now dropping most calls in the first minute, I live in the city centre with good network coverage, and I have the cover on...
I went to the VF store yesterday, was given a new micro SIM in case that was the problem (it wasn't).
Then rang VF technical support who reckoned it might be a problem with the software not changing quick enough between 3G to 2G network and vice versa to boost signal strength and recommended disabling 3G (this hasn't helped either).
So I'm sorry for not having an answer, have you heard any fixes elsewhere for the problem though?

  • What happened to the huge thread on trackpad issues?

There was a huge thread I has a subscription to with hundreds of replies and thousands of views on the problems especially with Early 2008 MacBook/Pro with erratic cursor movements, hypersensitive scrolling and lack of tap-functionality with the Bootcamp drivers.
I can no longer find the thread nor am I still subscribed. Yet except for a patch that is only for Late 2008 laptops and a hacked version of the patch from a user that never fixed any of the problems on my machine, there has no been no updated driver from Apple.
    What's the deal?

What problems with trackpad issues? There are none! Haha... Just Kidding...

  • Trackpad Issue - Please Help!

    Hi there,
Hope you can help me out here.
I've recently purchased a 15" i7 Macbook pro. The machine is but 3 weeks old &, of course, very well looked after.
A few days ago, the built-in trackpad started behaving eratically. Cursor moving by itself, not responding to touch, clicking and opening things involuntarily. Not good at all. Many users seem to have had this exact same issue.
These problems seemed to miraculously stop after a few re-boots and possibly a software update? I really couldn't tell you what resolved the problem.
Unfortunately I now have a totally different problem.
There is a thin, possibly 8 to 10mm horizontal strip across the centre of the trackpad that no longer responds to touch. If I move my finger from the botom of the trackpad upwards (or vice versa), the cursor will stop momentarily as it passes over the horizontal strip. The buttons are fine and the rest of the trackpad is fine. For the moment, I've increased the cursor acceleration so that I can at least navigate round the screen with a smaller area of the trackpad. USB magic mouse seems to work fine.
If anyone else has experienced this &/or found a solution for this issue, please help me out here. I have rifled through endless threads about MBP trackpad issues with little success & do not live close to an apple store/genius bar.
This is a 3 week old machine that cost me a small fortune. To be getting software/hardware issues so early on in it's lifespan is really rather worrying for the future.
    Appreciate your help here.
    J

I'm not sure what caused this, but I extended my lunch break and drove the machine down to the Westfield apple store. I didn't have an appointment with the Genius Bar but I managed to persuade one of the staff to speak to a technician in the workshop. She came back into the store and told me that they had replacement trackpads and that , considering the machine was only 3 weeks old, the technicians kindly sandwiched the repair into their timetable at zero cost. 2 Hours later, I now have a perfectly functioning trackpad/machine.
    I can't thank them enough.
My only gripe is that I couldn't speak to a technician to find out what the problem was, how they resolved it or what causes these issues for future reference. Understanding why these problems occur often helps to build your own framework of understanding. Most of the threads i've read about trackpad issues are largely unresolved with people only speculating the problem/solution.
The initial issue I had with the trackpad's erratic behaviour seemed to be a well known problem that many are associating with a trackpad firmware update. Unless by pure coincidence I had an immediate & major hardware fault after it, which is unlikely, my personal guess is that the two issues were related.

  • 30EA3- 2.*: Weird performance issues for editing objects

    Hi,
I noticed weird performance issues for editing objects: when right-clicking on them in the navigator tree and selecting Edit, you get the old progress dialog "Connected to database XXX". This stays on screen a lot longer than it ever did (last sequence I edited over 30 seconds!).
Cancelling displays a "Error retrieving schemas" dialog, but then opens the Edit dialog correctly. No further side effects noticed, so I think sqldev is adding useless overhead here.
If confirmed, can this be bugged and/or fixed by production?
    Thanks,
    K.

Yes, I mean in context of other hangs reported. This one is a nasty performance issue, but IMO the others are real show stoppers.
Atomic steps are easy; any* Edit (object) action inside the context menu of the navigator or the Edit button of the object viewer.
I took a lot of dumps (every second or so) and came to these findings:

  • (Not a) Trackpad Issue

I don't know what to call this issue and it's a sort of trackpad issue but not really. When I rest my palm on the sides of the computer off of the trackpad (no my thumb and no part of my hand is on the trackpad) I can still select things as if I were using the trackpad or as if I hit ctrl-select. I can even do it one fingered.
The real problem arises when in the middle of typing my hand hits on those areas because it will sometimes select whole pieces of text and then I'll hit a letter or space and it will wipe it all out. I had this problem when I first got it but I assumed it was because I wasn't used to such a wide trackpad. Others have had this problem when using my mac but I've chalked it up to new mac users. However after the problem getting worse recently I realized it's not me.
The trackpad isn't fabulous in general and I can't always get this straightened out. I couldn't get an appointment with the genius bar until Friday and the people at the Apple Store thought I was crazy and kept asking if I had some part of my hand on the trackpad. I happened to experiment when I was in Best Buy and it appears their model does it too but isn't nearly as sensitive as mine is.
I would love to know if others have this and if you've found fixes (don't want to give up my laptop, I need it, for a repair). Also what would I search for for others with similar problems.

P.S. I can't move the arrow around the screen with the areas not on the trackpad I can only select in these area.

  • Weird permissions issue update

(see thread below for 7/12/08 "Weird permissions issue"
I re-installed the 3.1.1 final version of CCC, did another backup, (both HD and clone now had Security update installed (as was the case with the backup using the CCC beta) and, voila, no more permissions errors there either.
So, it would seem, the problem stemmed from the differing security packages, not CCC.
BDAqua: I owe you points. Thanks again for your help.
By the way, is there any conceivable Mac executed scenario by which files can end up in the trash (besides "recovered files") without intentionally placing them there, (not counting sleepwalking and unresponsive, zombie states)? This has happened.

There were about 7 or 8, all documents: Appleworks.cwk or Word or Word.doc. and one was saved in Simple Text. They were related in content and could have come from a few places as they were grouped, saved in several locations, but really impossible to trace where they resided just before they ended up in Trash.
I don't want anyone to get too bothered about this. It's one of those things I guess they call an anomaly when no suitable explanation can be found. I was just curious to know if it can happen according to some process in Tiger I don't know about.

  • IBook G3/ Trackpad Issues/ HDD

Well, I got the OS to work about a few weeks back from reinstalling it, but theres another problem that I'd like to see if it can be fixed.
For a refresher, I purchased this iBook used off eBay and it formerly belonged to a school district in North Carolina. I believe that I am the third owner and the machine is pretty well used (casing kinda scratched up, etc) but the machine functions fine except now I'm starting to get some constant trackpad issues.
The issue is that after the machine has been used for about five minutes or more, the trackpad will start responding incorrectly. It is like my mouse cursor will start floating to the sides of the screens and doesn't wish to stay with my finger patterns. Now, this has been an issue since I bought it however now that I'm looking into putting this machine into actual use I'd like to try and resolve it.
I have a USB Mouse that I will plug in and the mouse works fine. Sometimes when I plug in the USB mouse and unplug it the trackpad acts like normal for a few minutes then goes back to acting abnormally until I restart. There has been periods of times that it seems like the iBook's trackpad will start working again, but as said.. it's very inconsistent.
If possible I'd like to fix this without going into extensive repairs. The trackpad does not appear to be damaged or have any scratches on it, but I cannot verify this machines history as said.
Off topic from the question but the hard drive is also kind of loud in this machine (original 10GB HDD).. when the machine goes to sleep or turns off the hard disk after being idle, its virtually silent. Should I be worried about this?
    Thanks again for the assistance!
    Jake

It could be that the trackpad isn't securely connected. This isn't so likely since it does work sometimes, but it's worth mentioning.

My computer was rebuilt this week and I am in the process of setting up iTunes and have a weird setup issue. The music in my playlists plays but the same song doesn't play from the library. Initially, I opened ITunes while holding down Shift of control key.

Scratch the post above - the musics that plays in the playlist also plays in the library and that is because i forgot that i imported from the cd yesterday. Basically, I see the rest of my music, but it doesnt' play and tells me it can't locate the file though the location in 'perferences' points to the correct location. Getting iTunes to play after a new computer or rebuild is a headache.

  • Weird freezing issues

    hi all.
im on an older mac pro and having some weird freezing issues.
-expose 'show all' and 'minimize' tend to freeze my display mid-animation (mouse and all)
-at least once a day, usually when using RAM heavy applications, my screen will freeze, but the mouse will keep moving. i cant move anything on the screen besides the mouse. if audio is playing when the screen freezes, it keeps playing. despite the mouse seeming to work, space bar fails to stop the music. after about a minute, the mouse icon is usually replaced by the pinwheel, which spins indefinitely.
    ive already:
    -run the apple hardware test
    -tested my RAM
    -bought & run norton antivirus
but nothing has been found wrong...
any thoughts on what to try next?
    a million thanks
    mike

If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Cheers! DALE
    p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.
