Weird video corruption when connecting to 27" Display Port Cinema Display

I'm not sure whether this is a Mountain Lion issue, a hardware issue with the MacBook Pro retina, or a 27" LED cinema display issue (non-Thunderbolt). Last night, when I had brought my MBP-r home from work and connected it to my Cinema Display, the MBP didn't appear to wake up when I hit a key on the external keyboard (Apple's wired keyboard). I opened the lid of the MBP, and I saw this:
Disconnecting the externa display did not help, nor did putting the MBP to sleep and waking it up again. Eventually, I had to hold the power key down to shut it down. There are no directory or permission errors on the SSD. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.3.
This isn't the first time I've seen this problem, but it's the first time that required a forced restart.

Thanks for your reply. I will explore your suggestions. I have a MacBook not a MacBook Pro. Does that affect your advice?
A 2007 MacBook also has mini-dvi so nothing is changed.
I have asked about the problem at the Apple store with a cinema display specialist.
Apple stores have "cinema display specialists"?
They don't know what the problem is and suggest I bring the MacBook in to be checked. They didn't identify any compatibility problem.
Which is why I question the words "cinema display specialists"!
We know that the display works fine because we are able to operate it with a MacBook Pro (2011). But any further suggestions welcome.
Those machines have mini-diplayport (or is it thunderbolt by 2011?  -- doesn't matter).  So no adapters necessary and you know your display works.  But the video out ports are "apples and oranges" here (mini-displayport vs. mini-dvi).  The object your "game" is how to connect (female) mini-dvi to to a (male) mini-displayport display (don't even think about the thunderbolt display).
I've given you all the ideas I could think of, except when it comes to finding adapters or converters of various "flavors", it's google, google, google.

Will my 2012 Macbook pro retina  automatically stop using wifi when connected to an Ethernet enabled thunderbolt display?

    Depends.
If you go in System Preferences / Network, you will see a list of all the network interfaces your current configuration has. If you click on the gear icon next to the minus sign, the drop menu will offer "Set Service Order...". There you can prioritize the order of use: Ethernet above Wi-Fi and wireless will be ignored if Ethernet is available.
Note that the Wi-Fi card will remain active and associated with an access point nonetheless. It just won't be used for communications by the OS and apps.

im not sure what to do next - can anyone help?
    im running OSX 10.7.4

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • HT3235 Does this display (MC007LL/A)come with a video display port to display port cable? Does Apple sell a replacement?

Wondering if Apple sells a replacement video cable for the non-Thunderport 27 inch Cinema display (MC007LL/A)?
It would be mini display on each end.

  • Any Mini Display Port to Display Port cable?

I am going to buy a new 30" DELL monitor which equipped with Display Port, but I cannot find any Mini Display Port to Display Port cable, so what can I do?
Don't tell me to buy a Mini Display Port to Dual Link DVI cable, it is nonsense to change the type of connector and buy that expensive cable.

There is at least one that I know of.

  • Video corruption when detaching tabs after updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.3

    Hi,
I began experiencing video corruption in Safari 4.0.5 right after I installed the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 update yesterday. The problem arises every time I detach a tab and it affects only the browser window that's detached, not the main one.
    FireFox 3.6.2 is unaffected.
Here's a screenshot that shows a webpage after being detached from a tab: http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/8625/screenshot20100330at111.png
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
    Thanks in advance!

    HI,
    I began experiencing video corruption
    FireFox 3.6.2 is unaffected.
This not a video issue but rather Safari HTML rendering. Try the following...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Since you are running Snow Leopard, make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Some third party apps such as AdBlock and iPassword must be run in 32bit mode.(Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If you still have problems, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

  • Weird USB sound when connecting my iPod

I have an iPod touch 2nd gen.
Everything was fine until today, when I tried to connect it in my computer.
When I try to connect it, there is a weird sound
Like when you disconnect a USB plug, except the lower notes repeat 3 times
My computer does not recognize any usb and when I check on my ipod if it's connected, there's nothing
    Can you help me?

If the computer does not see the iPod, meaning iTunes also does not see the iPod, there's not much you can do.
Make sure you have reset the iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
Also, try connecting the iPod touch with all other USB peripherals (except for keyboard and mouse) disconnected. This includes any hubs. There may be some odd conflict between devices.
If that does not work, your iPod touch is still covered by the one year warranty, so you should get it checked out by an Apple authorized tech (or at an Apple Store if there's one nearby).

  • No video signal when connecting Blu Ray player

I have a new blu ray player and HDMI cable. It will play just fine when connected to little cheap TV but my large Toshiba will just show No video signal when I try  to connect it and use it. I have tried everything, read the whole manual, searched online help, called the support phone number which just directed me back to the online support. Nothing has helped.
Also when using my old DVD player with the 3 component cables, I never get any color, just black and white picture.

The TV likely has a shared video input. You need to tell it in the settings whether you're using a composite or component device. If you have a composite device connected and the TV thinks it's a component device, it'll show up in black and white. What model number is your TV? I'll tell you change the setting once I know what TV you have.
Also, to what specific port is the new Blu-ray player connected?

  • Connecting to a 27 inch cinema display

I have a mid 2007 Macbook running OS10.7.1.  According to the tech specs for cinema display, it should be compatible with the cinema display, but I can't get any image on the screen.
I attempted to download the software update, (update 1.0) but when attempting to load it, I got a warning saying you need OS 10.6 to load, and it wouldn't permit loading.  Seems pretty odd, given that the tech specs permit 10.6 or later.
Any suggestions on 1) whether I need the software update (and if so how I can install it, given the problem described above), and 2) otherwise how I can get the display to link to my laptop.
    Thanks

  • How best to get my vga Powermac G4 connected to my new dvi Cinema Display?

    Hi Folks,
My new 23" Cinema Display has arrived. That's the good news. Of course I checked Apple's site before the purchase, to be sure the new monitor would work with my very old G4. As soon as I saw the line under System Requirements where it said "G4 or G5 Powermac or Powerbook", I thought I was covered. Now I find MY G4 has a vga connector and not a dvi. Thereby hangs the bad news.
Does anyone make a pci-based video card that will let me connect to the Cinema display? Should I be looking into one of the vga-to-dvi boxes that Gefen Inc. makes? Other strategies?
    Many thanks,
    Rod

The ATI Radeon 9200 PCI card with 128MB VRAM has a DVI and VGA port IIRC. If you still have the original Rage 128 in a PCI G4 (Yikes G4) then it wouldn't support the monitor without an upgrade anyway, the 23" requires at least 64MB VRAM (maybe even 128MB) IIRC.

  • Need help connecting 2 towers to 2 Cinema displays

Help needed, I am rebuilding my workstation and have purchased 2, 27" Cinemas to connect through switch box to 2 mac pros. I currently have it working through a belkin VGA switch and my old monitors but I want to make use of the new higher res monitors. The switch I am looking at is the CS1642 USB 2.0 DVI Dual View KVMP by Aten. I know I will need adaptors but am a bit confused as to which ones. I also believe I will need to get new DVI cables to get full resolution? The two towers are also a question as one is new series 5 with mini display ports and the old one series 1 has upgraded video cards with DVI...
    Any advice greatly appreciated...
    D

What connectors are on your proposed switch?
Googled his switch and found this page.  It had this picture of the connections in the back:
So it looks like a bunch of dual link dvi's, usb's, and 3.5 mm audio jacks.
But to connect the mini-displayport versions of the 27" display to this would require the Atlona converter.
Atlona (Dual Link) DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter
And as you say, NOT CHEAP.

  • How to connect a new 27" LED Cinema Display to an older Mac Mini?

I bought a 27" LED Cinema Display (no Thunderbolt) but don't know how to connect it to my wife's older Mac Mini. I presume the Atlona adaptor is the solution, but I haven't bougt one yet.

The cord attached to the display splits into a Mini DisplayPort, USB, and a MagSafe connector (for powering a laptop).
There is a separate connector on the back of the display for the AC power cord.

  • What Cable Do I Need To Connect My MacBook With a Cinema Display?

    Hi,
I have got a 23" old HD Cinema Display. It is the one with the transparent plastic around the outside. I have a 13" MacBook, Oct 2008 then discontinued, the one that looks like a MacBook Pro, and I would like to connect the laptop to the display. Which cable would I need to connect the two?
The cable coming off the cinema display has three lines on ten metal dots on the right, and a line, with two dots above and below it, on the left. On the Macbook I have got a mini dvi port.
    Thanks,

The first problem is that the 23 inch display with oval ADC connector has no power supply. You will need something like the Apple DVI-to-ADC converter, which contains the power supply to generate the 28 Volt power at up to 4 Amps needed to run the display. This will convert your display to a DVI display with a power supply "brick" in the cable. These converter/power units are readily available on the used market and have an AC power cord.
If your MacBook is an Aluminum body, it has a Mini DisplayPort. [Older models had a Mini DVI, where the center partition was folded into a C-shape.] Mini DisplayPort can be forced into "Single-Link DVD compatibility mode" with an inexpensive adapter. This solution works for DVI displays up through 1920 wide, beyond which you need the much more expensive Dual-Link converter. {If your had the Mini DVI, that is also a simple adapter.]

  • Connecting new MacBook to old Cinema Display

I have an old Cinema Display that I want to use with my new MacBook. I just bought the DVI to ADC adapter. I can connect the Cinema Display to the adapter but the manual illustrates that to connect to the MacBook I need to use both the USB port and another port for which there is no equivalent port on my new laptop. Any ideas?

It sounds like you are looking for an Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter available from the Apple Store (including the online Apple Store). You will also need a standard DVI-D cable to go between the adapter and the DVI to ADC adapter.
