Weird weird issue about 27" intel (late 2009) display
i toured the whole discussions to see if anyone else shares my problem but obviously not...

i decided to write an email to apple directly for I'm not satisfied with the dealer here in istanbul / turkey.
i am not so sure if this issue ever happened to some other iMac users…my screen is alive!
i bought my iMac 27" (late 2009) from a friend. after i took it home and spent a couple of days i noticed that there was something unusual on the bottom right corner of my screen.
it was like a triangular white detail under the glass cover…i thought that it was sort of a label or etc.
after a couple of days i saw it growing and occupying a bigger area!
for the warranty was expired i took it to a technical service store to take the glass out and see what it was…
it was sort of a plastic tape probably used for insulating the ips panel to keep it safe from dust or etc.
the tech guy first offered me to paint it black with a permanent pen if it was only a visual disturbance but after my high tone "no" , grabbed a blade, trimmed and peeled it off for it was on the screen blocking the portion. then i took it home…
2 days later it was there again…bigger…
i assume its made of a material that enlarges or expands itself by the heat produced within the machine…then i took the glass of as the tech guy did and gently trimmed it myself and peeled it off…
2 days later…it was there, even bigger….this material is alive and growing! to get rid of the problem it caused i have done the same once more…nothing changes…it runs on the screen and blocking my pixels on the bottom right corner…
i do believe it is going to grow since theres no material left by my butching. and as we lose the material we do lose the function. the inner screen behind the panel gets dirty because the mutant isolation tape doesn't do its only work but kidding with me. this may sound stupid but the issue is extremely annoying.
although my iMac is out of warranty, i do believe it has nothing to do with the usage. the material itself has production faults.
as an enthusiastic apple user, i now ask apple to solve my problem from the core and replace this mutantly behaving screen for my mental health and satisfaction as a loyal customer.
no other issue would make me go mad, but this one is sitting in front of me everyday smiling psychopaticly on my face. by the way i believe my 1TB HDD also needs a replacement, cause it sort of screams and working very soundly. The HDD replacement program seems to cover this second problem of mine.
please help me with my weird issues, for i can not work with my old beloved machine anymore.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:

Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the trash.

Should I upgrade to Mavericks from OS X Lion (on iMac Intel late 2009)?
I've been using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 on my iMac (late 2009) for a long time and have no complaint about it — and I wonder if I'm missing something in not upgrading to the newest OS. But will upgrading at this point create problems where currently I see none? Advice, please. Thanks.
And, here is a different view on Yosemite: I don't care for the changes in the user interface and I don't care about icloud integration; nor do I like the fact that some of my apps (iMovie, iDVD, etc) no longer work in Yosemite - I won't use the latest iMovie as it has lost many of its capabilities in editing and export quality options. So, although I am running Yosemite on my MBP, my iMac will remain with Mavericks so I can use the apps I want to use.
FWIW, you won't be able to get Mavericks unless you've purchased/downloaded it previously - Apple pulled it when they introduced Yosemite. -
Hard drive issues on an iMac late 2009
I am having issues when trying to back up my Late 2009 iMac to my 3 TB Time Capsule via the Time Machine. It always stops short of completion and then it restarst by itself and an message appears saying that 'your computer was shut down because of a problem'. This error is displayed in a window with several language. Do you think it's my iMac's hard drive or a software problem? I would appreciate any help.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Then Repair the external drive, reboot & test.
If it still bombs...
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & the Startup right after that for clues. -
IMac late 2009 crashing with Maverick
I have a problem with my iMac (late 2009) that I cannot solve. It has become very slow, and crashes regularly after some time. Impossible to repair it, neither from the disk recovery partition, nor an external HD boot and using Disk Utility. So everytime I have to download Maverick again and install it to be able to work. I have noticed that after the fresh installation, and and a few days of working, Disk Utility shows problems with Disk permissions that need to be repaired. This occurs systematically.
To complete the story, the iMac was working fine when I bought it, but was returned to Apple for the HD substitution (Apple replacement programme). After this, and/or after installing Maverick (but I am not sure the 2 things are related), the problem started.
I have also tried PRAM resetting, no effect. Any suggestion?For 2009 iMac owners on Mavericks, I recommend this procedure. Saved me a lot of frustration after almost a month of constant crashes and getting no work done.
I downloaded a temperature monitor to see what was happening. Before the fix, the temperature on the "north bridge heat sink” would just go up and up without fail. Particularly when using flash or a video related application. It would just keep rising until until the graphics card just shuts down.
It’s a 3 year old bug related to 10.6.3 and GPU drivers (ATI/AMD). Here’s the link to the guy who figured it out and should be testing for apple. You have to use terminal to solve the issue. He explains everything in detail.

After the fix, the temperature at the graphics card stays level. I’ve also decided to use a fan control app for the moment so temperatures stay around 50 and the iMac runs like it should. Even in my hot room in the summer.
Been crashless since doing the procedure. Try it out. better than lugging a 27" iMac around town. -
64-bit Windows 7 on late 2009 iMacs only?
In the Boot Camp Install-Setup documentation I read:
You can use a version of Windows Vista or Windows 7
with any of these Mac computers:
- A Mac Pro or MacBook Pro introduced in early 2008 or later
- An iMac or MacBook introduced in late 2009 or later
Is this true?
Is it really not possible to use 64-bit Windows 7 on a late 2008 iMac?

Is " stereo mix" missing in your windows 7 on late 2009 imac 24 or 27 ?
I have a imac 27 running Windows 7 64bit and no stereo mix option.
I am a professor and when I do screen capture of scientific clips I need I can't get audio to record except by the imac mic from the speakers rather than directly.
That destroys the sound quality.
I have tried to download other sound card drivers and still no stereo mix recording or stereo mix playing options in sound!
I have the fairly useless digital audio s/pdif but not the stereo mix which is really needed in all kinds of recording applications.
I also downloaded the cirrus logic drivers shown in another thread for macbook users, but still no stereo mix.
Any idea for a fix?
This is an important basic function for any computer, and I can't understand why this is not supported yet?
Apple has used bootcamp to attract Windows users who want to use Windows natively. This is one of the most basic function, full audio capability.
This problem as well the cpu going 20 percent higher just plugging in a headphone, and the fact that the trrs headphone jack does not work on a trrs headset in windows 7 (including mic) is a real negative. The trrs headset like the iphone headset works fine with its mic in the mac side but not in windows side.
Drivers to make the basic hardware in an imac or macbook work in windows 7 shouldn't be rocket science. We need apple support or an innovative person out there to solve these problems.
If anyone reading this has the stereo mix on the w7 side, please let me know on this thread and maybe I can duplicate it on mine.
If not, we know this problem exists for every windows 7 bootcamp user.

I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 3TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.
Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files. -
I have been having a lot of weird issues lately. A lot of programs are becoming unresponsive. It also seems that when one becomes unresponsive, others will follow. So if FCP becomes unresponsive, Safari does as well or Firefox or text edit, etc. In many cases, after I force-quit them, they will become unresponsive while re-launching, and I will end up closing everything and re-starting. Speaking of which, re-starting tends to get hung-up as well forcing me to hard reboot (hold down the power button).
Also, it seems to be struggling to play movies, where that was never an issue before.
Then, theres FCP. I am having issues where I a song used for a video will suddenly be all whacky. Towards the end it will start repeating like a skipping record, and make static noises. Replacing the song with itself clears that up. And finally, I have had a number of videos export from final cut with the audio disappearing halfway through, even though the timelines are fine; or an exported video will have 'freeze spots' where the video will just be one frame for a period of time.
Anyone have an idea what might cause these issues??

If your problem is a process that's using excess CPU time, you can explore that with the Activity Monitor utility. Launch that, set the list near the top to "All Processes", then click the "CPU" column header near the top until the highest CPU users are at the top of the list. Now user your Mac until it's sluggish, then check the Activity Monitor display to see if you can spot a culprit. -

I read the manual and did everything (to my knowledge) and spent 2 days researching this but cannot locate an answer. Ok, I personally have an iPhone, and iPad2 and iPad4 all on my same Apple ID. (that is what you are to do, right? that way your apps purchased can be shared on all those devices and you don't have to purchase new, right?) (The iPod just croaked w/ white screen.)
Ok, just this Friday 2/8, my iCloud told me the "cloud is full" to manage it. Ok, so I go to manage it, but everything I do I notice does ZERO to release the space. I worked two days releasing tons of space and nada. The icloud didn't move from full position. I did turn on and off my devices. I signed out of the iMac cloud.
I see this:
On my iPad (etc):
TTL Storage 5.0GB
AVAIL 281mb
So I go to "manage"....
for "Docs and Data" it ONLY shows 2 apps I never use (I do use notebook apps but nothing else shows here but these two apps):
Writers App 12.5kb
Tweed 0.1kb (since deleted so it only shows the first)
Then, below that it shows (in my opinion the culprit!):
MAIL 4.7GB
Soooo, I went to iCloud on my iPad and iMac (took turns) and DELETED IT ALL TO ZERO. Zero in inbox. Zero in sent. Zero in Trash. It is a hollow trash can!
I signed out of the iMac icloud.
I come back and my "manage" area looks EXACTLY the same as stated above. The mail still shows at 4.7GB. It did not drop!!! I had other "accounts" of emails originally on my iPad to check, as it is a big convenience to go to mail and choose the account and it is right there, but I deleted ALL those as well. THE ONLY mail program I have on my iOs is iCloud. Even on my iMac, I turned it off.
I have NO iWork. DIdn't purchase that yet.
I have a lot of APPS and at one time under "manage" it LISTED all the apps and I could turn them "on" or "off" for icloud storage. I turned camera OFF and most all apps EXCEPT notebooks like Noteability, Evernote. NOW, after deleting all my icloud email, I do NOT see them nor the option to "bring them into the cloud or delete them from iCloud useage"....it ONLY will show Writers App and Tweed (never use them). Not sure where that list went!!
Is there some kind of GLITCH that I am experiencing? I want my icloud experience. Is there something I am overlooking?
At one point I changed the settings to back up NOTHING and that FULL icloud did NOT change! And, it still showed the same thing as stated above with mail at 4.7GB. Also, at one point I did ONE (count 'em) icloud back up on my new iPad4 and I DELETED that since I saw this issue as well. (Plugged into my iMac and used iTunes instead).
Also, when I sign in on my iMac and in Sys Pref go to iCloud....I see this:
It has on left this wording: "icloud account (button) and sign out (button)"
on right: (on icon below another it reads:)
mail, ctc, calendar, bookmarks, photostream, docs & data (off), back to mac(off), and find mac.
And, to far left bottom "manage" when I GO THERE, it ONLY shows this:
Mail 4.7GB (grrrr lol) <---there is nothing in the icloud.com email box/any of them.

I really want to have the cloud experience again (a person has told me I have it, but what I am saying is for it to work flawlessly as it has been for me, actually working ...being able to email and recv/read emails (bouncing now)...backup IF DESIRED (no chance now as it says it is FULL)...etc.
Is this some virus-y thing or glitch or am I overlooking something?

FINALLY FIXED ITSELF AFTER 2.5 DAYS OF TIME CONSUMING WORK AND INSPECTION!
Thanks, I am happy to report my iPad is fixed but have to share with you what happened:
I just went to Mass and prayed at Mass for guidance to help find the solution as I am sincerely looking hard and don't have the time (I know, who does, right?). I prayed that if I couldn't find the issue that someone here would be guided to see this and assist me.
Well, after I get home and feed the family, I go online again to look at my iCloud email box on my iMac and just keep looking...yes, it is completely white and clear. I see nothing that can be "MAIL" of 4.7MB. So, then, I turned on my iPad once more just thinking I may have to give up on this and just live w/o it. I re-cheked my AVAILABLE storage for the last time and it was at 5.0!!! I was like "WTH?!!" Then, I re-opened my iCloud email on my iMac and it was still blank but just then my iPad AVAIL (storage) dropped to 4.9GB.
So, as it is now, I have 4.9GB available for icloud storage. OUT OF THE BLUE after so many many hours and all nighters for two days. I'm beat.
It seems in this case perhaps it was some weird odd GLITCH?? That the email deleted and space opened only showed up NOW (ie: a big delay from when I cleared it out yesterday night...about 24hours)???
I will leave this here in case: anyone at Apple sees that there is a problem with this and they are looking for other reported cases...they can update their manuals or update how their product reacts (more real time) OR if someone out there has had similar issues.

I personally think my situation was a delay type glitch where I deleted the over-load and then when I corrected everything, it didn't click in till about 24 hours later...so maybe after you did everything you can, wait 24 hours and see if it self corrects to the right storage amount? Just putting it out there in case anyone experiences anything like this as it perplexes you when you seem to be following all the "rules".

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode. If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.

I have a late 2009 iMac (2.93 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 4GB of ram, model id is 9.1) running Lion right now. I upgraded it all the way from Leopard using the standard keep-all-your-apps-and-settings way. After looking at the hardware requirements for Mountain Lion (and my success with running Lion) it seems that my good ol' iMac is still capable of running it fairly well. But I don't like the idea of "stacking" upgrade after upgrade (*coughs*, clean freak!). I like the idea of starting out clean this time because so many years of use has filled my mac with a lot of crap I no longer use.
So I would like to know your sane advice, and if there's anything I should check out before attempting this. Especially I'm concerned about hardware/driver related issues like for example: the webcam or speakers no longer working. Also, if there's something I'm overlooking please point it out.

It is a Feature of the Mac EFI Firmware system. And it will only install whichever version of the Download only version of OS X that originally came on that system.
My MBP came with Lion Preinstalled. Even if I have Mt Lion installed on the hard drive the Online Internet Recovery system would always point my MBP to the Lion download as that was the original version of OS X that came on my Mac.
No real authentication needed. Since your Mac came with Mt Lion no matter what newer versionof OS X you ever install the OIRS will always point you to Mt Lion and ONLY Mt Lion.
It is something different, but not completely different, from the built in Recovery HD partition on the internal drive.
No worries as during the install of MT Lion on your SSD the installer will Recreate the Mt Lion Recovery HD partition on your SSD. -

I have encountered a weird issue after I migrated my application from flex 3.5 to flex 4.5.
In our application, we have 3 kind of views, View, ChartView and StackedView, the later extends the former one, let's say, in ChartView we have
<local:View...>....</local:View>, in StackedView we start with <local:ChartView>. We config the view type in the database as View.swf, ChartView.swf and StackedView.swf. The problem here is for example, if I load a view with StackedView.swf and change to a view with ChartView.swf, some of the components will not initialized, we get runtime exception like

We debugged into the code, and found that the exception occoured before the parent component is initialized. Actually the parent(or the parent's parent) component's height or width is NaN.
By the way, if we load ChartView.swf directly, everything works perfectly.
And I just solved the problem by spliting the 3 type of views, say, keep the View.swf, comibine the code from View.swf with ChartView.swf to a new ChartView.swf, the same to StackedView.swf, which now combines 3 type of views' code.
Though the problem is solved, but everyone can see it's not an elegent way, and the maintenence cost is high.
I suspect it is something related to load module or unload module, seperating the 3 type of views just make sure they didn't share something.
Can any expert help me figure this out? Many thanks.Use the profiler to see what is hanging onto the old memory. But my main point is not about memory. It is about sizes. An empty container has no default size. When it gets a child it often picks the child size, and then if that child is removed and another child is provided, instead of picking that new child’s size, it might still use the old child’s size, and that might cause the new child to layout at a different size than if it was the first child.

IMac (late 2009) CPU runs very slow (about half speed)
After having had troubles with performance I 've recently discovered, that Geekbench as well as Xbench return results way too low for my machine. In fact it appears results are exactly half the speed one would expect. In Xbench CPU power is about a score of 110 where I had 220 with 10.6 for example.
Now I had done an SSD update a couple of month back and this speed gain probably masked the CPU problem. I might even have damaged the small monitor synch cable during the procedure but all hardware tests (TechTool Pro 6 for example) show no problems.
I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC but to no avail. Also booting into SAVE Mode did not change the behavior. Here is my etre check profile:

Somebody posted a very similar problem, resetting SMC helped there. Running Bench I can see normal degradation when running other tasks (i.e. from 110 CPU which is max of what I can get at the moment to 80-90 when running other apps) So it really seems to be some preset which keeps the CPU from running both cores or such.

Wireless Certificate lost after install
We are using machine certificates to allow only our devices to connect. When I install Zenworks, the certificate becomes invalid. Its still there, just won't work. A reinstall fixes it and everything is fine. Is this a known issue? Matt

Cannot add USB printer in Printer Setup Utility
I have an Olympus P400 photo printer that I previously was able to hook up directly as USB printer to my PB G4. Upgraded to OS 10.4.10 and now no longer have an option for adding a USB printer. This is a problem since I no longer see my P400 printer
