Weird Wireless Internet

Hi all,
So as many on here have been posting about, I have been experiencing really weird internet trends with my MacBook. When I first start up (or come out of sleep mode from a couple of hours), I cannot connect to the internet at all. The computer connects to the network, just the internet is not accessible. This is true for all applications and lasts for about 30 minutes. At first I thought it was the router, but my sister got a white MacBook the same day (Same specs, just 160gig drive) and it doesn't have this problem. I'm starting to think that it is my MacBook. Does anyone know what may be causing this? Also as a side note, when I connect to the router via ethernet cable, everything is fine. Also I cannot do iChat AV video chat without the ethernet connected. Also also my iPod touch connects to the network with no problem. Here are the specs.
Black Macbook running 10.5.4 (software up to date as I write this post)
Linksys WRT54G wireless router
SBC Yahoo DSL with Speed Stream Modem (connected directly to the router)

I just thought that I would add that I have been experiencing the same problem, but with a different router. When I was experiencing the problem at first, I had difficulty even connecting to the internet, so I hooked up a second router to the network, this time it was a Netgear router. My internet worked great for about a week. Then it started pulling the same crap, but here is the shocker, now when i connect to the original router, it works! Not completely, I still have to wait way too long for pages to load on it, but I can actually log onto the internet. Please, I now know that this is not a router issue, can anyone help me at all?

I'm on a DD-WRT wireless internet service. Could this network be causing my iMac to act weird ?

From reading this site and others, looks as if there could be thousands of possiblities/remedies.
I agree. Aside from the very remote possibility that running Java for that "trusted" website allowed some kind of infection--and if it was some kind of exploit, I doubt it would manifest itself in any way you'd notice--there are just too many different things going on for me to give any help.
Why were you thinking it was the router/DD-WRT? What if you connect directly by Ethernet?
    Some generic thrings to try.
See if a Safe Boot helps. Shift at the startup chime and give it much longer to boot than normal. Don't open anything, leave it a minute or two and then restart normally.
    SMC reset

You could try the shotgun approach and reinstall, but first you must be certain to have a completely reliable backup, in case you need to restore.

  • IPod Touch: apps (facebook, twitter, facetime) don't work properly with my wireless internet having worked perfectly before. Help needed!

I got my iPod Touch 4g for Christmas 2011 and for the first 2 weeks everything worked fine - I could download apps; use apps to their full potential; use FaceTime; use everything.
But after the two weeks, the iPod decided to no longer work as well as it had promised. First of all, it would take more than 2 hours to download a single app from the app store and then, straight after that, I couldn't connect to FaceTime (it had worked perfectly before). Then, finally, to top it all off - Facebook and Twitter stopped working on occasions. For example, I couldn't post/send messages or photos on Twitter and at the majority of the time, the News Feeds wouldn't load.
Sometimes everything works but most of the time it doesn't. I've tried my iPod at every time of the day and it makes no difference - nothing still works! Also, I don't think it is the fault of my wireless internet because I've had an iPod touch before and it worked perfectly, and the laptop that I am writing this question on also works perfectly with wifi.
The weird thing is that I have used my iPod to its full potential (everything worked fine) at my friends hosue on multiple occasions - using his wifi. I am really lost for ideas for what to do - I have uninstalled all the apps that don't work with the internet (facebook, twitter) and have always made sure that I have closed apps after using them, so that my iPod wouldn't run slow.
My iPod has been like this for over a month now, help would be appreciated

Do you have a blackberry data plan active. On your account? You need an active blackberry data plan to use the majority of data functions on your phone, even if you are connected to wifi

Hello, my sister her macbook pro cannot connect to our wireless internet. My imac however can, so the problem has to do with her laptop. We were wondering how we could solve this problem? Thank you very much in advance!

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

    Situation:
Computer shows internet connection (full bars), but won't actually connect to the internet and load webpages
    Attempted Fixes:
    Reset Safari
    Quit Safari
    Restart the computer
Turn off the computer with router unplugged
    Turn off Airport
    Swear at the computer
    Swear at the internet
Unplug the router and turn the Airport off too
    Additional Info:
Second computer (mac) connects to the internet so it's not an internet problem.
Last few days the internet has been slowly dying on the computer (Mac OS X) in question. Meaning that the internet asks me for the router password constantly, which was a new development.
I have seen information about reseting Plists and a few other weird things, but I didn't want to do anything drastic based on someone elses issue. I figured it's best to bring my specific issue to the forum before destroying my Mac by randomly deleting Plists.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

Excellent troubleshooting solutions which usually works.
Which os version are you using?
First contact your ISP.  You need to confirm that the issue is not on their end.
Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined." Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

  • PB won't wireless internet !

Hmmmmmmm, Router is a D-Link DI-614+ on a Windows box, I hook up the PB thru a 10/100 Cat5 cable and everything is fine. Disconnect and attempt to go completely wireless, the PB connects to the router/network wirelessly, but internet fails to find the server when I launch the browser. Probably an easy solution, but I've tried several things that just simply don't work. BTW, also using Bellsouth DSL lite and it's a DHCP IP address, not a static one. I did set up the TCP/IP to manually administer the settings, because the one that OSX assigns is really a weird set of numbers. I used similar 192.168.0.* numbers and 255.255.**.** subnet mask and the PB wirelessly says it's connected to the internet, yet when I launch the browser again, it doesn't find the server ?
All suggestions welcomed @ this point, wasted too much of my life trying to get it done @ this point.
    Thanks in advance.

"If the "weird set of numbers" began with 169.254, then it was a "self-assigned" IP address, usually a symptom that the PowerBook failed to receive an address via DHCP from the D-Link."
That's the exact weird number sequences the Apple gets in DHCP mode.
I did do the manual address thing and it didn't work, but I only manually put in the IP, the Subnet and the Router like you indicated. That continued to fail, until I put in the DNS Server also as 192.168.0.1 like you indicated. I figured the router was the same thing as the server address, because it is how all my Windows computers that have no problems connecting to the D-Link and internet are being assigned.
It now shows in the network status that it's connected via airport like it did when I only had the IP, Subnet and Router entries in manually and connected to the router and internet. There's no indicated difference in that regard. But most importantly, now that the DNS Server has the 192.168.0.1 manual entry, when a web browser is launched, the web page loads and there is no error message that the server can't be found. I'm surfing the internet with it.
"BTW I don't understand what you mean by "Router is a D-Link DI-614+ on a Windows box". Is it sitting on top of a Windows box?"
Yes, that is correct, the router is attached to a MS Windows PC, the network was created with Windows and the PC. Everything Windows gets along and plays well with that mini-server. The Apple, when I use it outside of my network works flawlessly out of the box for airport wireless and wireless internet on any other Windows cross platform networks, that's why I was perplexed with this issue. I can take my PB down the hall of my apartment complex and automatic/DHCP mode works perfectly, no manual entries required. That's why I figured something about the PB doesn't like the setup I have for my network, simply because it works every where else on the planet automatically.

  • HELP ME UNDERSTAND WIRELESS INTERNET PLEASE!!!

IM looking into purchasing a laptop but do not have internet currently, IM totally confused on how works. Can I get wireless internet without a phone jack? Some people have also told me that a satellite laptop would be best but I would need a wireless router to connect do you have to have a service provider or can I surf the web right away? PLEASE help me!

Lets not Confuse Toshiba Sattlelite with wireless capabilties, its just a brand name and does not imply functionality in a specfic way.
There are legal ways to get free wireless internet, one i just mentioned which is the library. If you use your wireless card and find other locations over the airwaves, and they are unsecured, you could essentially hop onto them but its very illegal and there are ways of catching people stealing wireless access from other users.
If you are in the market for High Speed internet such as Comcast, or Verizon, you can go here:

  • Wireless Internet Access (Cisco IP NGN or Cisco Wireless Mesh Networkin)??

    Dear Cisco Wireless Team
Please educate us on where to start, or the CISCO product we might need to purchase
We are trying to branch out a new Internet wireless access and wireless phone service business in our company, and presently looking for the right Cisco product solution to purchase to enable us offer this service in LAGOS, NIGERIA.
The service will be rendered in Africa, the country NIGERIA, and the city LAGOS.
We would like to mount or install the product in Lagos, Nigeria.
As we are new to this kind of service. We would appreciate if the Cisco wireless team can work with us in pointing or directing on the right product to purchase and what are required. We understand the Cisco Wireless Mesh Networking Solution, Cisco IP Generation Network, Cisco 12416 or 7600 Series Router might be the right products to purchase, but we are not sure on what needed or what are required to meet our service need.
Possibly we would like to offer Wireless Internet Access to unlimited subscribers, and also Wireless or Mobile Phone service to unlimited subscribers in Nigeria.
    Anticipating your reply

I suppose Cisco Wireless Mesh Networking would be a good choice. The Cisco mesh architecture makes it easy to scale coverage as capacity needs dictate, including increasing access point density; adding wired connections, controllers, and radios; and using dual high-powered, high-sensitive radios and a selection of high-gain antennas.Refer the document for IP NGN in the following URL http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/ns537/networking_solutions_solution_category.html

  • Wireless Internet access via requires unplugging cable modem -

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and Airport Express (7.4.2). I have high speed Internet via Comcast/cable modem. I spent 30 minutes with the Apple Tech Support folks and was finally able to get wireless internet access. However, after I shutdown and reboot, the only way I can wireless internet is to unplug the internet cable from both the wall plug and cable modem and unplug the modem, both for about two minutes. This isnt what I had in mind when I crossed over from the dark side (PC laptop world) and am having buyer's remorse. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem (i dont want to unplug cables before each session on the internet)?

    Mr. Timmons,
Thank you so much for the response.  I thought the complete reboot would work, but apparently not.  I followed the directions precisely, even waiting a few minutes longer than suggested for each of the steps.  My air express is still blinking yellow.  I think the issue has something to do with the DHCP and the IP address which are diifferent. The IP address is one series of number (starts with 169), and the LAN IP address is another number (starts with 10). Status on airport express show yellow for internet connection, and yellow for no DSN servers. When I go to the internet tab of airport utility, it shows the iPv4 address starts wutg the 169 number. When I click on the network tab, the DHCP range starts with the 10 number.  When I open the Network Options window, the iPv4 DHCP range starts with the 10 number.  I am at a loss as to how to get them to match up (with either the 169 number or the 10 number).  V/R sjbgtmo

  • MBP problem connecting to wireless internet

I recently tried to get online using my Macbook Pro (Intel) and I was prompted for the password to access the wireless internet network which was unusual as it normally connected automatically every time. Once I had entered the correct password I was met with the pop up window "'There was an error connecting to the network 'Vlsise'" (Vlsise is the name of our home network). I think that this may have been due to recently downloading some updates the day before but I can't be sure.
I have an iMac (Intel) and PlayStation 3 which connect fine to the internet wirelessly but I've not gotten around to downloading the latest updates for the iMac in fear of it encountering the same problem as my MBP.
My laptop can connect via the ethernet cable but when I try to connect wirelessly I briefly see the IP Address 169.254.109.180 in the network settings window before the error message appears, if that is of any use.
The router I'm using is a 'Zyxel 660HW-T3' and has been great for the year that I've had it. It may also be worth pointing out that our provider 'Telefonica O2' upgraded our service last month but as the MBP is the only Mac that has a problem I can't really see this being related.
If anyone has a solution to my problem or any tips to try rectify the problem they would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

So I took my MBP to work to try their WPA2 password protected network and it connected no problem! I'm absolutely stumped on this one I think my last resort will be to re-install OSX and see if that works. If someone else has already tried this and it didn't work then please inform me so that I can save myself the hassle.

  • HS-1200 breaks Wireless Internet access

FYI, I just installed and started using the HS-1200 yesterday and they are awesome. An unfortunate side effect is that it breaks the wireless internet in my house. Wireless routers and the headset both operate at 2.4GHZ and they don't play well together. I thought it may have been my Belkin N1 Vision router so I went out and bought a Linksys WRT310N and it does the same thing. The remote computer have trouble connecting and when they do they get around 1mbps. Turn off the headset and poof, back to 36-54mbps. I have open tickets now with all 3 parties involved so hopefully there is a fix, otherwise the $106 headphones have to go in the closet and that would really p_ss me off.
I can't believe that this problem didn't present itself anywhere in their testing and QA process.

Im having the same issue also SabreHawke. I use my HS-1200, with my desktop replacement laptop, and off and on, the wifi light indicator turns off then on. Never had this issue before. Been using wireless channel 2 for about 3 years now, w/ great connection. Not sure what channel the headset uses. I cant use the default channels, i think 6, 9, 11, cause once someone turns on the microwave it disconnects. Guess i'll try some others, but channel 2 has been the best. Other than this i love the headset, :-).
    Edit: Did speakeasy speed test.
Normal (w/ headset off): Download ~10mbps w/ speedboost up to 16. Upload ~2mbps.
Headset On: Download ~1.5mbps. Upload ~1.0mbps.

  • Restrict wireless internet access on certain periods of time

    Hello,
We need help on setting up a network with some restrictions for the attached clients.
We're quite new at setting up a network at this size.
    Used devices:
    1x SRP 540 router
    1x SG 300-10P managed switch
    4x AP 541N accesspoint
    What we want to do:
    1. Around 100 laptops and desktop computers need wireless internet access, but some of them on limited times during the day.
    2. Not all wireless devices are allowed on using the wireless network.
    3. There are also wired desktops that don't need restrictions.
    4. We need the possibility to restrict most of the wireless devices to access certain websites or use certain applications on those computers to use internet access during the times that the computers are allowed to access the internet.
    5. We want to restrict the clients for using torrents or other possibilities of downloading illegal content.
What we were able to do:
    1. The accesspoints (AP 541N) are clustered to achieve 1 large wireless network.
    2. Only mac-adresses that are listed in the accesspoints are capable of using the wireless network. Other mac-adresses are not allowed to use the accesspoints.
    What we tried already:
    1. adding the mac-adresses for the accesspoints to the list of "internet access policy" in the router. Internet access seemed still possible during periods the access wasn't supposed to be possible.
    2. adding the mac-adresses from all clients in this internet access policy seemed useless. Only 10 Internet Access Policies seem to be possible to program. 8 mac-adresses per policy. Knowing there are (at least) two policies needed to restrict a group of 8 macs to access the internet in 24 hours (because blocking the internet from f.e. 22u in the evening to 6 in the morning is not possible because 6 is smaller than 22 - or 10PM).
Besides, after blocking internet access, we need also to write policies in blocking some websites or keywords.
    Thanks already for your guidelines.
    Wim

what about the thoughts of radius for authentication which is connected to active directory for your wireless users. Then have those people you must limit access too during the day in their own security group that's only allowed to login to the domain during certain times of the day.
To limit sites or what they can do on the Internet will require a separate solution for content/URL filtering. Then you can make policies and apply to your security groups in active directory block by category, keyword, and so on.
This is all great assuming you can get these clients into AD.
Just a quick thought, hope it helps.

Hi there Bananaman, you are one of those wonderful volunteers out there, anyway, as I have said purchased machine on 06 worked for at least year and a half then quit on me. I cannot access the internet, took it to office depot since I purchsed it from them, they're offering FREE tune up had me purchase a Linksys LAN card telling me the built in wireless netcard had given up on me. Did not help, they sent me home w/ the LAN card assuring me it will work since in my house I have a wide range of wireless internet connection whatever. Did not work either. Called IBM Lenovo only to be declined of tech support because machine not warranty covered. Yesterday, I tried to fix it(LOL) for a miracle to struck me but to my despair. I don't know what to do, I want to take it to service center recommended by IBM but got no green. I am hopeful that, being a member of the Lenovo community, I could find some real help from real people like you. These are the characters I see at the back of my machine I think as the product number, (TYPE  2511 - FEU  S/N  *******   0510) Thank you.

  • New Laptop -- wireless internet halfway working?

I just got my new HP Pavilion dv4t Entertainment PC and everything has worked fine up until I wanted to connect to the internet. I double clicked the connector thing in the bottom right corner and chose the appropriate wireless network and filled in the correct password.
So it now shows that I am connected to my network ("Home") and I have full bars, however when I proceed to click on IE and load a simple page like "http://www.myspace.com" it fails to work. It pretends it's going to work and gets about half way done loading the page (according to the status bar, anyway) and then just stops and the site never loads. However, when I type in google/yahoo.com those pages come up perfectly (and fast) and I can search their search engines. But when I search something like "avg anti-virus" and the search engine displays the results I try to click the first one and it does the same freezing thing it did when I tried to type in "http://www.myspace.com"
I'm using comcast internet, a netgear router, and all of my other computers have connected to the wireless internet without a problem (all the other computers run on XP, though...)

Hi, This happens to me as well. I turn on computer Outlook recieves emails no problem but I go to internet and nothing. It looks like it loads the page sasy 'done' in corner but I stare a white screen. errrhhh. The only way for me to get internet is to disconnect/connect 2-3 times in a row. One time never works. Every other laptop in hosue including my 8 year old gateway connect first time. I tried to explain to best buy and they say nothing is wrong?? Other thant that I love my new laptop.
