Weird wireless networking showing up in my range
I have two off wireless networks showing up in my range. They are: 1. Jet blue hot spot 2. Triple a network Does anyone have any idea what these are? They definitely look suspicious.
It could be your neighbor's wifi. Use a more unique SSID for your wifi. And make sure that when you configure your router, connect it manually (wired) to your PC - do all the necessary settings then save.
You'll never know, you could be changing someone else's wifi settings when you're doing it wirelessly.
A unique SSID is a good way to start. Then change the default password of your router.

MBP C2D - no wireless networks show up: possible soultion
If you can't see any wireless networks, one possible solution is to change the channel of the network.
I've got a quite old Netgear MR314 wireless (802.11b) router. Yesterday I got my Macbook Pro C2D and tried to get connected to my wireless home network. Airport was turned on, but no wireless networks showed up in the list. My Ibook could access my network just fine. I tried to disable all wireless security such as WEP and access control based on the MAC address of the Airport card, but it didn't help. Sometimes I even saw some neighbor's network, but not my own.
Today I logged in to the setup page of the Netgear router and played around with channel setting. By default it was set to 1. Channel 2 didn't work, but when I tried channel 6 or 11 (didn't try all of them), my network showed up in the list and I now get full reception!

MBP C2D 2,33 / 2 GB Mac OS X (10.4.8)I had the same problem, turned out my airport card inside the macbook was fried. Apple replaced it and while they were doing it they fried my MB and RAM. So after 2 days I have pretty much a new computer. Buy the extended warranty.

HP7520 Connected to Wireless Network, shows up on Wireless Laptop, Unable to Connect
After working fine for several months (aside from turning itself off and needing to be unplugged and re-plugged all the time) my HP7520 will no longer print from any of the Laptops in our home.
The printer says it's connected to the network, shows up as Online and Ready in the Printer Dialog box, but every time I try to Unable to Communicate with Printer message.
This happens on laptops running both Windows 7 and Windows 8. I have a cisco wireless router.

I saw your post about your Photosmart 7520 no longer communicating with any of your laptops. I would like for you to try assigning the printer a static IP to see if that will help the communication issue.

Defunct wireless network shows up in network window
I bought a new wireless router (a time capsule) and set up a new wireless network. When I click Go - Network, both my old and new networks show up, even though the old one is now defunct. I've already gone to Preferences - Network - Airport - Preferred Networks and deleted the listing for my old wireless network. It no longer shows up in that list, but it still shows up in my available networks. Any ideas on how to delete the listing of the defunct network?

Have you tried turning off Airport, rebooting your Mac, turn Airport back on, then check available networks???

I got a new wireless router, Netgear WPN824 from Newegg, a refurbished product. I set up a home wireless network using the online manual on the Netgear website. The router works well for the wired setup. But I could not connect to wireless.
My wireless network shows up on the list of available wireless networks. I can connect to other wireless networks such as that of my neighbour's. I tried connecting to my network using both unsecured and secure WEP / WPA modes. Except once, I could never connect. That one time, as soon as I could connect and verify that I was indeed connected I thought the problem was resolved and so shutdown my system to see if i could connect again - alas, same trouble again. I use NetworkManager to connect, and here's the output for two networks - jaydoc which is my home network, and linksys, that of my neighbour's to which i can always connect.

Is the wireless router i got a dud, being refurbished i took my chances and maybe i wasn't so lucky..! Or is it something wrong in my network settings..? I tried shutting down everything and then turning the modem, then the router and finally the PC without the ethernet cable connected. Still I am unable to connect.
Any help is deeply appreciated. I am a total newbie in networking...!

that is what my router status is at the moment. and I am able to connect to the wired network using the router. However I still cannot connect wireless. I did not see any settings in the wireless settings page of the router that ask for DHCP server names/addresses. This is the current logfile output

So if its still a DHCP problem, it seems to be affecting only the wireless part. How can I make wireless use the same DHCP servers as the wired..? Or is there something else wrong here..? -
Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter - With any driver: "The device instance name is invalid"

I was trying to install various "Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter" drivers, with versions ranging from 2007 to 2010, both from the manufacturer and specifically for this computer (a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile) and others from here:

All of them are for Windows Vista 32bit.
The computer had previous drivers installed and working, but also had a network problem. In the process of figuring out what was causing it, I tried to install newer drivers to see if that was the problem. It turns out the network problem was due to a different
thing that is now fixed (some dependencies of the WLAN Configuration service were turned off), but I'm still stuck installing the new drivers.
TL;DR:
However, every time I install new drivers, after install, Windows says that
"The device instance name is invalid", regardless of what drivers I install. I even tried to install drivers for different hardware in that slot just to see what it told me and IT STILL gave me the same error. I also tried to uninstall the
current driver, checking the box to delete the driver's software, running CCleaner and then deleting
"athr.sys" from the Windows/Drivers folder and
"oem8.inf" from Windows/Inf as those files were referenced in the driver's properties. The install still gives me the same error.
The fact that it gives me this error with any driver leads me to believe it's Windows' fault and not the driver's.
Note: I am translating from the original in Portuguese. "The device instance name is invalid" is the closest/correct translation and seems about right with the info I find online regarding the english version of Vista and how it refers to devices.

doesn't help me. It may be that the text is actually different in english Vista but I also searched for driver instead of device or stuff like "The device instance name appears to be invalid" and can't find anything either.
I also did SFC /SCANNOW a while ago and it found no errors. I then repeated it again after this problem and this time, SFC found errors BUT it couldn't repair all of them. Here is the CBS log:

EDIT2:
The last SFC /scannow scan repaired everything left to repair. The system restore option can't be used because the earliest one still has the (suposedly faulty) drivers installed.
This computer has a Win Vista serial number, but no CD and the second partition doesn't have any kind of backup. The second partition is empty though. So, as a last resort, if I really don't have a choice, I'll try to do an upgrade install to see if that fixes
it and if that still doesn't fix it I'll have to move everything in the users folder to the second partition and format the first which is a bummer :/

I'm still trying to read into that setup.api.log file.So, can I assume that the only way to fix this error is to download an iso of Windows Vista, unninstall my service packs, upgrade install Vista, run Vistalizator to change the language to Portuguese and then install Service Pack 1 & 2?
EDIT: Alright, so I formatted the thing since the driver bug wouldn't give me a break. The details on that can be found searching for the same thread title either on tomshardware or vistaforums if anyone happens to find this looking for the same error.
I have a real knack for bumping heads with errors that nobody else gets that somehow turn into unfixable bugs. At least if someone else searches for this problem they'll know what to do. -
Extending my Linksys Wireless Network with AirPort Express
I would like to add an Airport Express to my wireless network to extend my wifi range and add AirPlay to my home theater system. Can Airport Express be used to extend my current wireless system that is not an Airport Extreme devise?
Also, by adding the Airport Express does this now limit the number of devices I can have on my wireless network to the 10 even if the Linksys supports 50?
Thanks for any advise...Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your non-AirPort router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

My laptop connects to the internet via my wireless network at home. My ipad will not bring up the internet using the same connection. It shows in the wi-fi settings as connected but when I bring up safari, nothing comes up. Any ideas?

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

my ipad 4 has been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any ideas?
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app

• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off. How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM. My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore. Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc. I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads. Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system. I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system. But are there other options to connect the new TC. Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above. after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working. Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant. I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work. The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network. Are we going backwards?

I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??

I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC. the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.

You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options. -
When I switch my time capsule to 5.0ghz mode the range of my wireless network drops significantly. Near the Time Capsule my Macbook Pro works fine, in my bedroom I have almost no signal. In mixed mode it works fine both placed. Any ideas on how to get 5.0 working? I thought 5.0Ghz was supposed to have a wider range. Do I need to change a setting on the Macbook Pro?
Thanks, WI'm not sure if you understand that 5 GHz has some upsides, but also some very significant downsides.
The upside is that the 5 GHz signal will allow faster speeds.
The downside is that you must always give up something in order to gain something else.Unfortunately, the marketing hype about 5 GHz does not go into very many details about this.
In the case of 5 GHz, the 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not travel as far or penetrate any obstructions like walls or ceilings nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. In many cases, in order to get good 5 Ghz performance, you literally have to have almost a line-of-sight relationship between your computer and the wireless router.
If you have a new dual band router, which broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simutaneously, your Mac will connect to the best signal quality automatically depending on its location in relation to the router. In the same room, without any obstructions, it will connec to 5 GHz. But, take the laptop down the hall a few rooms and around the corner and the Mac will connect to the 2.4 GHz signal because at that location, the 2.4 GHz signal is not only stronger, it is also faster. -

I just bought a new Macbook Pro 15" with SSD 256 Gb and its almost a brand-new (the 4th time to use the device) a while ago i was trying to connect to my home wireless network it said that the connection is timed out so i clicked the airport sign on the top it said that your airport is not configured then I restarted the system but it didn't restarted it showed the grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel for more than 10min so I tried the force shutdown by pressing the power button till it switched off I waited for 5min then pressed the power button to start or boot the system and again the grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel, I waited for more than 20min nothing changed, any solution please?
Your help is really appreciated"Thanks a lot i followed the instructions for safe mode (i found out that i was pressing the C button after restarting) i did whats written there but the repair couldn't be performed so in addition i needed to re-formate the HD so i erased the volume and then repaired the disk--> quite disk utilities --> start the installation from the installation DVD.

I recently re-image my Toshiba laptop (using window xp installation disk) due to I deleted few system files accidentally and can not boot the system up.
Before I re-image, I have no problem to connect Fios internet. After the re-image, the wireless network connection not showing up in network connections, so I cannot set up my Fios internet.

I am trying to extend the range of my wireless network by adding an airport express to an airport extreme. I configured it with the help of apple support, but it hasn't changed the range that I can access the internet wirelessly in my house. What could be the problem? Does weather affect the wireless network??
So, on the Extreme you checked the box to "allow this network to be extened" ?

I have a Dell XPS running on Windows 7 and use an AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi to get wireless internet access for other laptops in the home. I want to connect an AirPort Express 802.11n into the network to wirelessly extend the range of my wireless network. I have installed the AirPort Utility but when I attempt to connect to the AirPort Express, it gives me an error code 10057 and says I should check the internet connection. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP settings on my PC but that did not fix the issue. The Airport Express is also flashing yellow rather than solid green. Has anyone found a fix for this issue?
This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.
