Weirdness in Mail 2.1.3

I recently had to transfer a user from a DOA eMac to a G5 tower (the eMac wouldn't boot normally, but could be seen in Target mode, thankfully).
Once I had Mail set up on the G5 and able to see the server, I imported all her old mail successfully, but with two annoying problems:
1) The headers on all e-mails (both imported and new) have loads of extra white space in them, meaning she has to scroll a lot to see the body of the message. I suspect this is a font issue, but I don't know how to reinstall ONLY the system fonts.
2) The red dot indicating how many new messages she has does not appear. It'll give the new-mail sound notification, but no red dot. This version of Mail does not have a preference for that, either, as it does in newer versions of the OS.
System specs: G5 Power PC w dual 1.8GHz, 2.5 GB RAM. (2005 vintage)
Thanks!

Hi Rita, I believe you're right, a Font issue.
Go to Mail>Preferences>Fonts & colors>Message Font, what is that set to? Try changing it to another font.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
Have you installed any new fonts other than the System Fonts?

  • Keystrokes lost--space weirds out Mail

Just in the last few days, whenever I try and compose a Mail message I get the following *really weird* problem:
When typing in the subject line, every space I type becomes two.
When typing into the body of the message, as soon as I type any space a) the blinking insertion point disappears and b) no type is visible from then on.
    **Other typing?
My typing works 'zactly as't should in every other app I've tried (Word, TextEdit, Safari, etc) except SOHO Notes where typing does not appear in a Note I create or edit but when I quit the app and open it again then all the typing appears.
    **Stuff I've tried:
Creating a new Mail account in a new login: worked like a charm.
Removing the Mail folder from the ~/Library directory and creating a new mail account: Still had the problem.
Checking for updates (I have v2.1.1 and there are no updates.
    Restarting: still bad.
Simplifying (having only Mail open): still bad.
    **Further Notes
I've turned on Keyboard Viewer and all the keystrokes appear as they should (including just one space for Subject Line typing).
I gots no idea what's what. I don't recall any updates / installs at the same time this problem started.
Copying and pasting text works great.
    Help!
Please e-mail me directly at [email protected] as I don't get to these forums often.

This problem could be related to the built-in spell checker, and be caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, this other article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
    4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.
    Please e-mail me directly
That ain’t gonna happen. It would defeat the whole purpose of these forums. Moreover, publicly posting real email addresses here is a really bad idea.

  • Weird New Mail Bug

About three days ago, my outbox began collecting emails in it... I send an email, I get no error messages of any kind, and then the message gets added to what are now more than 25 unsent emails. The Outbox takes more than a minute after the app is launched to appear--other folders show up right awayl... as if the Mail app is slowly being reminded of its existence. Sending a few additional test messages seems to hasten its appearance.... odd, I know.
    Also:
I continue to receive emails without any problem.
AT&T verifies my server settings are completely correct.
I can send mail from other computers I own on the same network, using the same account/settings.
As a temp workaround, I copied a folder full of outgoing messages from the library>mail>messages>outgoing, copied them to a different computer, opened them in Mail on the new machine and sent without incident--but what's wrong with my laptop Mail???
Is there a way to re-install Mail on my laptop without losing all my messages and mailboxes???
    Any assistance deeply appreciated.
MacBook Pro 2.33 Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Thanx for the points.
If you do the Mail reinstall and combo update followed by software update to get the subsequently released security updates, and you still have the same problem, be sure to post back; I would wonder whether trashing the Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file would then be in order, but since you are a POP mail guy, somebody that has/uses POPmail might want to weigh in here at that point regarding how to make sure you don't lose all your saved downloaded POP mail. I'm just an IMAP guy so not comfortable advising with POP mail issues, so maybe one of those guys in this forum's "Top 10" list could jump in here at that juncture.

Is there a way to re-install Mail on my laptop without losing all my messages and mailboxes??? Could the Safari beta be screwing me up somehow? Other than that, everything is normal on the system... and even the Safari beta predates this problem.

Sorry, this was posted in the wrong forum... apologies.

  • Weird outgoing mail issues after snow leopard upgrade

After upgrading to snow leopard a couple of weeks ago (then immediately to 10.6.5), I have been having trouble sending mail from my work machine on one account. After reading these forums and trying several solutions (listed below), the thing which seemed to work for me was deleting the outgoing mail server entry in the preferences pane and re-entering the information. However, this solution does not always work for me, and is only temporary; after some amount of time (variable? on the order of minutes?) the problem recurs.
If I open connection doctor the server in question displays a "Connecting to server..." message for a long time (minutes) and then "Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you...". I get this behavior even just after resetting the smtp server, while I am successfully sending test emails.
As with others here, the same account works fine on other machines.
Things I have tried, on my own or based on advice read in the forums:
    1) specifying the port for the server in advanced settings
    2) Deleting and re-adding both the smtp server and the imap account
    3) Setting mobileme to manual sync
    4) "cd /var/log;touch mail.log;sudo chown root:admin mail.log; sudo chgrp 644 mail.log" (which doesn't produce any logs for me).
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I for got to add
    5) repair permissions in disk utility
    6) reboot

  • E5 weird e-mail notifications

For those who have setup their home screen to anything different than "Active" and have the mail notification setup on the home screen, but don't get any sound and/or vibration - the problem is that sound and vibration will be played only for the 2 mailboxes setup in the "Active" standby mode, no matter which one you are currently using. If for example you want to use the "Contacts bar" mode and have sound/vibration for your e-mails, you must first switch to "Active" mode, set your account on the home screen, then switch back to "Contacts bar" and set it there also. I lost so much time to setup mail accounts, reset the phone several times etc. until I found this. I am so tired of Nokia and their latest "smart" phones...

    Hi;
There is no logic as you describe in the Notifications, it will send every submission to the collaborators set up for Notifications.
    Thanks,
    Josh

  • Gmail not showing up in mail

so this is getting out of hand.
all mail accounts are using IMAP
    background:
    - ipad 2, iphone 4s and ipad mini: work mail account shows up on both. i can view / move / receive / send e-mails
    - iphone 6: work account shows up, folders are visible, but messages do not show up. can send, but not receive messages. i have deleted the account and added it back, no difference. it pulls folders from the server but does not pull messages.
    now on the mac...
    - macbook pro: gmail shows folders, but all folders are empty. no messages display, can send but not receive (they just don't show up)
    - macbook air: gmail works as expected
i checked ~/Library/mail folder and the gmail box is there, it has folders, folders have messages... but the corresponding folder in mail.app does not show any messages. (see screenshot)

  • IPhoto and Mail

I have been trying to email a photo from iPhoto using the email button (Apple Mail is my default email software), and everytime I clicked compose, the photo would not attach to the email message. After much frustration, I quite accidentally discovered that if I crop a photo to a squarish shape, the photo will not attach to an email message. But if I revert to the original photo, or crop the photo with unequal proportions (wider than tall, etc.), then the photo attaches to an email message fine. Has anyone heard of this, or know of a reason why this should occur? I am using iPhoto 2.0.1, Mail 1.3.11, and OS X 10.3.9.

    that is weird!
mail 1.3 being a much newer version than that of ip2!!!!
maybe a glitch between ip2 and mail 1.3.11??
I use mail 1.2.5 and ip4 with 10.2.8! and everything is fine.
you might want to upgrade to ip4 or up!
    my wild guess!

  • Mac Mail now 1000 inBox emails and counting

This is weird. Mail will not QUIT so I have to force quit. When I delete duplicates they come back, and dupliate again. I have moved the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 to my desk top and tried (nothing), I have rebuilt mailbox (nothing). It started last night. I watch the activity viewer and it tries to alway download 111 new emails, makes it to the last one and hangs. If I try to shut down the computer will not and I get MAIL WON'T QUIT window so I have to force quit again. I have 2 mail accounts that originate from a Yahoo hosted website and only the Admin is affected. It's been working great for 2 years. (I have advised Yahoo and waiting for an answer)

Yeah, I tried and that didn't do anything. What I just tried seems to work (for now). I went into Library/Mail?pop-Admin/Deleted Messages folder and dragged the Messages Folder to the trash. Then logged onto Yahoo and went to my deleted mail (surprise there were 117 mails there) and selected ALL and deleted.
Reopened Mail and seems to work now. I can quit normally.
Fingers X-ssed!!! Thanks for your reply!

  • Mail.app crashes when creating a new mail

    Hi
This is really weird. Mail.app is now unable to reply to, or create a new message.
Whenever the dialog for writing a message comes up, Mail.app crashes.
I've restarted (not sure why) and no change.
Is there something I can do?

Upgrading to 10.6 solved the problem.

  • Gmail appears in Mail 4.2 but is not in my accounts pane

Hi all. I will try my best to explain this weird little situation about Gmail in my Mail client.
Okay - I've just bought a 27" iMac running Snow Leopard and after the setup, I configured my Mail acounts. I have three accounts, one of them being Gmail, and after everything was configured, I started to get gmail mail from way back to 2007 and my inbox kept filling up with tons of old gmails.
Next, I deleted gmail from my accounts pane in Mail. It solved the duplicate emails issue fine. In fact, I still get current Gmail mail coming in, which is weird, as Mail is no longer set up to retrieve it.
Now this is my REAL question for this post: how can I compose a message using my Gmail address? I know that since the account is not setup in Mail, it follows that the address is not selectable from my drop down menu, however, is there a way of going back and setting up Gmail in my accounts pane without getting all of those old duplicated emails?
    Thanks so much,
    B.

You could do a search in Gmail itself, delete the old messages, and then re-create your account. Better yet, archive those messages, and then you'll have them in Mail if you need them, but they won't be cluttering up your inbox.

  • Can't see .Mac mail

    Hello,
I can't see the messages from my .Mac account in Mac Mail. I used to receive them, a few weeks ago, but it no longer works. The messages are there when I log in to my .Mac account online, but they don't get sucked down to my machine. I think it's a configuration problem, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. Here are the features of the problem. Hope someone has a solution. Thanks.
    --Using Mail 1.2, OS 10.4.8
--2 accounts: one university POP account + .Mac. No probs w/ university account.
--.Mac account can send mail & I receive it on the univ. account. But the other way, the message shows up in my online mailbox but does not download.
--I tried trashing the account and recreating it in Mail. Weirdly, the Mail sidebar for that account now shows the number of messages it contains--but when I click on that mailbox the number disappears and the box is empty! It takes several minutes for the number to reappear.
    G5 Dual 2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Mail 1.2

    Hello Nathaniel.
Let's check whether the rules could have a bearing on this:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate MessageRules.plist and move it to the Desktop. If there is a file called MessageRules.plist.backup, move it to the Desktop too. You may also see MessageSorting.plist files there; this is where Mail 1.x stored the rules, and they are no longer used by Mail 2.x, so just move them to the Trash if you see them.
    4. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
    5. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering, and configure it however you wish.
    6. Go online again if you went offline in step 4.
    7. Rebuild the mailbox, i.e. select it and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
If the problem persists after doing this, then you know the rules have no bearing on it, and you may move the files on the Desktop back to the ~/Library/Mail/ folder, overwriting any files Mail may have created anew there (quit Mail first).
BTW, I guess you meant Mail 2.1, not Mail 1.2, right?
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Can't quit Mail

This is weird. Mail is very slow, seems not to be sending all my emails (they don't show up in 'Sent'), and I can't quit the application normally - I have to do a Force Quit. Please help.
    Thanks,
    RPN

    Rebuild all your mailboxes.
Click on each mailbox for each account. Be sure to do it for the sent, trash and junk mailboxes as well. When you've clicked on a mailbox got to the mailbox menu and click rebuld. Should fix this problem.
    PS

  • Mail: where did the status icons go?

Here's a small thing, but it's weird. Mail used to have little icons that would spin while looking for new messages. It was a visual indicator that something was actually going on, during what would otherwise look like dead time.
Somewhere along the way, the icons disappeared. Any ideas? 2008 Mac Pro, OS 10.5.4, Mail 3.3
    Thanks,
    Aram

    I figured it out.

  • Not getting attachments

When using the PHP form I inserted into my iWeb site I do not receive the attachment in Apple Mail.
    Here is the form:
    http://www.modellabs.com/modellabs/Free_Quote.html
My problem is that when someone uses the form to upload and send an attachment, I get a very weird Apple Mail issue.
    1) I get the email of the form in Apple Mail and it shows that their is an attachment with the paper clip icon. BUT there is not an attachment included. Not inline or when I double click the email. Nothing.
    2) However, I do receive the attachment if I log into Mac.com webmail.
    3) My business partner, on a PC using Gmail gets the attachment.
Is this an issue with Apple Mail or iWebs/.Mac?

I see issues like this a lot for larger files and when you open the email before the attachment had time to download.
If you open mail, see it checking (spinning progress) wait. It will finish and show you new emails. Wait a moment and you may see it spin again, it does this for emails with attachments. If you try to open an email with an attachment before it is downloaded, I have have mixed results of it actually getting it. If you wait and let it finish before opening, most times you get it.
It just is a pain yes.
