  • Kanaka for Mac Finder Manipulation

    Hello,
    We've been testing the possible implementation of Novell Kanaka for Mac in our public lab based environments. Right now we're only testing on a couple iMacs running 10.9.4 Mavericks and we're running OES 11 SP2 and Kanaka version 2.8.0. The setup and connection was easy enough and we've tested out a few different settings with different results. My main concern is the Finder sidebar.
    The folder structure of a basic account is basically:
    User
    > Documents
    > Pictures
    > Movies
    > Music
    > Library
    > Desktop
    > Downloads
    On the flip side we have our eDirectory folder structure:
    User
    > Desktop
    > My Documents
    --> Downloads
    --> My Pictures
    --> My Videos
    Currently the only folder to map is the desktop because they have the same name and they're both at the same level. From there it breaks down because nothing else lines up. When the user navigates through the Finder the folders like Pictures, Movies, Downloads, Documents are empty. If I go to the Home icon in Finder I can see all the network folders but I'd like to minimize panic.
    I found a preference file for the Finder sidebar but I'm not sure I understand how to manipulate that and have the changes reflected in the sidebar itself. It would be nice if Documents actually pointed to My Documents and Downloads point for My Documents > Downloads.
    The other tricky part is Mobile Accounts is turned off to allow the eDirectory folders to appear on the Mac the way they do but the accounts are not saved to the Mac so after logout you wouldn't know that person logged in. To further the complications, I'm not 100% sure where the initial preference files are coming from. I've played around with the User Template files and through my testing I found that those changes only appeared when Mobile Accounts was turned on and Synchronization was turned on. In addition, the folder from the Mac file structure are synced onto the User's eDirectory account so none of those folders exist on their account until they login, then their eDirectory accounts look like this:
    User
    > Desktop
    > Documents
    > Pictures
    > Movies
    > Music
    > Library
    > Downloads
    > My Documents
    --> Downloads
    --> My Pictures
    --> My Videos
    (personally, I think restructuring the user's eDirectory would solve my problem but that's not my call and I'm just frustrated)
    So to sum this up. How can I manipulate the Finder sidebar so it sounds to other locations when the user logs in? If I have to make a Library folder with that single preference file on their eDirectory then I'll do it!

  • External Harddrives - Manufacturers using the words 'for Mac'?

    Hi,
    I've learnt about the difference between PC and Mac HDD formats, and was about to buy an external HDD when something got me questioning my knowledge. I see that some manufacturers use the words 'for Mac' in their product name. And that the models with 'for Mac' in the name are about 20% more expensive than the same model name without the 'for Mac' wording. Eg
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=700
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=719
    The manufacturer specs don't seem to explain anything, so I wanted to ask here: are these products exactly the same, except that the 'for Mac' version comes pre-formatted in HFS Plus?
    Can I just buy the standard model, and then do the formatting myself with Disc Utility?
    I questioned my knowledge, because it seems daft that a manufacturer can charge 20% more just for pre-formatting the disc in the correct format. Is there anything special about the 'for Mac' models?
    Are there any other considerations I need to make? Is there anything special I need for the disc to work with Time Machine?
    Thanks,
    Yeti

    Hi Yeti
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    You can reset the Partitions Scheme and Format of most all off the shelf External HD's. I have several that came MS-DOS/FAT-32 that I have changed to GUID Partition Table/Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    See > http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
    Some manufactures include partitions with windoz backup programs that should be eliminated, as they are of no use to you anyway.
    Time Machine will format the drive to it's own liking, however I always reset the Partition Scheme and Format to make sure it is properly cleaned and setup.
    See: Time Machine 101 > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    and Time Machine -- Frequently Asked Questions > http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018
    Lastly you might want to consider a desktop drive over a portable for Time Machine, Time Machine need lots of room and you can get more GB for your money.

    I'm not sure that it is actually possible to parameterize the DYNR. Anyway, it would still leave you the problem that the field descriptors in the command interface would all be wrong.
    My suggestion for getting around this is to make several recordings using the SAPGUI command, creating a new command for each screen change. You can then edit the script so that the different cases between which you want to differentiate are separated by IF...ELSEIF...ENDIF  commands.
    You might then have something that looks like this (pseudocode):
    * SAPGUI command for common "opening part" of transaction
    IF (subtype = 'LA').
    *SAPGUI covering screen 2001
    ELSEIF (subtype = 'LW').
    * SAGPGUI covering screen 2000
    ENDIF.
    * SAPGUI for common "closing part" of transaction - if relevant.

    That depends. If you bought the disc version, you're good to go, since your serial number works on both platforms, so just install the mac version. If you lost the discs or your mac doesn't have a disc drive, you can download it here:
    Download Photoshop Elements products | 13, 12, 11, 10 <https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/photoshop-elements-10-11-downloads.html>
    However, if you bought the windows version as a download, you're out of luck. Adobe does do a crossgrade, but for older versions you have to pay to upgrade to current version on the new platform, and that's more expensive than just buying it, if you search around for a good price.

    We have developed a desktop application using Flash software and published the same for MAC environment. When we double click on the index.app file, the application is working perfectly in Mac 10.6.7 at our office. But if the same index.app file is double clicked in Mac 10.6.7 at out clients location, its not opening. For your information the client is able to open this same application by double clicking on index.swf file. The main problem is that client is not able to open the application using index.app file at their office whereas we are able to do so at our office. Can anyone give some suggestions to sort this problem?

    The most common reason is different versions of Flash, or different versions of web browsers used.  Some users may elect to not have Flash installed at all because of the processor overhead of Flash.  If you are going to make an application for a client, check what operating system and browser versions they are using first.  Then determine if a stand alone application is required, or if they have the necessary plugins to run specific browser enhanced code.
    P.S. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control.  Mac is the shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Inc.
