Well Iam not cheap, but...

My son has a BW 20GB ipod that is about 20 months old (we've had about 4 so far) and we've always had great luck with them. Now this one froze and none of the restarts, reboots in any matter worked. FINALLY we got it to reboot via a restore but after attempting to load in new music is went back to the DISCK mode and got stuck so I decided to send it in for repairs (no longer under warrenty). Well after filling out the online forms the cost to repair would have been $277. WHY would I do that when I could purchase a new COLOR 20GB new one for 299. Does that repair cost seem excessive? I think it is outrageous. I know I have to pay something but 277???. I wish I could figure how to get it working again.. Any sugesstions?

Well I tried everything here. Thanks for the suggestions. Finally got my Mac to recognize iPod. Did a clean restore, clean disk utility. Eventually did everything four times. After loding some music back in, I get the big CHECK sign and disk mode title. It never works or "turns on" to play music. Justfreezes there. Have tried over and over....Any other suggestions??
So rather than spend 277. for a repair I just order another new 20GB for 299. Thought about a nano but only 50. bucks less for 4000 less songs. Yea I know I wont have the cool factory for now.

Well, it does say on http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html in step 1: "To enable iCloud on your Windows PC (Windows 7 or 8 required), first set up iCloud on your other devices, then install the iCloud Control Panel for Windows.
If you're trying to back up your device to iCloud, that doesn't have anything to do with your computer. You back up to iCloud over wifi. All you do is go to Settings>iCloud, sign in with your Apple ID to create your account, scroll down and tap Storage & Backup, then turn on iCloud Backup. You can then tap Back Up Now at the bottom to start the back up manually, or lock the screen and connect it to your charger and it will back up automatically every day.
Enabling the iCloud control panel on your PC only allows you to sync your iCloud data with your PC, not to back up your device to iCloud.

OK Jerry - but DVCPRO HD's not cheap either!

Current requirements and very tight budget prevaling, we've virtually made the decision to invest in a Panasonic AG-HVX200 for its Selectable Frame Rates, DVCPRO (& DVCPRO HD) Buffering (& Looping) - plus it's vastly improved workflow over Tape Capture, Editing etc.
But one thorny issue's raised its ugly head . . . what about archiving DVCPRO?
We can't run to a DVCPRO deck - the cost's prohibitive.
So I guess we're stuck with Hard Drives, although their inherent reliability issues mean we must DOUBLE backup until something more dependable becomes available.
Bearing in mind DVCPRO HD uses twice the disk space of HDV - this won't be a cheap option.
Any constructive suggestions would be most welcome but please don't suggest XDCAM - we've explored that avenue!

hd, any flavor of hd, is not cheap. end of story.
once again, as a consumer, i just don't get it, this drive towards hd. i worked a six camera espn2 hd basketball game the other night. very expensive truck, very expensive, finicky cameras. of the twenty people watching that broadcast, just how many were watching in hd? all graphics, all cameras have to compose for 4:3. midwestern college basketball on a school night in hd. go figure.
talking with the operations manager of that show who's been a very long timer in the mobile tv biz, his opinion of hd technology is worse than mine. i find it extremely telling that the predominant amount of my peers in mobile and stationary tv have no hd and find it an unnecessary expense.
of course, these are just my opinions. hd is another story telling tool and as such can be very effective but it's incumbent upon those who want to use it, to truly discover it's pros and cons.
get used to it, to all who want to work in hd, pony up the costs and stop whining.
i was looking forward to the dive into my own personal hd when hd-dvd and blue-ray finally came to fruition, however, mike evangelist as taken the wind out of those sails. http://writersblocklive.com/boycott/

You won't believe this but a friend of mine (who happens to be an Apple Genius) told me to put a towel or cloth on a sturdy countertop (I know this may sound weird) but hold the selct button (in the center) and menu part of the wheel at the same time until an Apple logo comes up on the screen and then quickly turn the ipod on it's side and wack it on the counter where the towel is so as not to damage anything cosmetically. It seems the clicking is the hard drive reader is stuck and this dislodges it. Mine works now (no clicking) and all seems to be well again. Who knew?

Both played well on my iMac but would not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs. I have tried other 'codecs' DV-PAL; DVCPRO-PAL; DVCPRO50-PAL; AIC; and finally share to iDVD. iDVD works on both my iMac and DVD Recorder but the picture is very poor with major shimmering which is unwatchable. Can anyone assist? The other codecs I used either do not pay on my video recorder or fail when I play them back on my iMac. I am at a loss as to what I can do. I am from the UK so using PAL is essential.

If the source video is interlaced, you may have problems using iMovie. It de-interlaces everything on output which can cause picture to look strange. Final Cut Pro X supports interlaced video, but it costs a lot more.
Standard DVD Players don't support H.264 or MPEG4. You might want to look at this article on transferring HD video to DVD. I wrote this article mainly for Final Cut Pro, but many of the same principles apply.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine. I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one? Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well? It is not saved in the cloud.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
Connect it the new computer
Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

I have taken it back to the Apple store genius bar, but they say they don't see anything wrong. Well unless you use it all day and experience the problems when they happen, you wont see anything wrong. But there are lots wrong with it. But this would be the same store as I purchased the phone. And they backed up my old Iphone 4, but were not able to get anything to load back onto my new phone. So, I lost pretty much everything. But over time, some of my contacts have started showing up, although i am still missing over 800 of them.
