WEP 128 bit 26 hex digit problem

Can't seem to use the passwords generated by the linksys router for WEP 128 bits 26 hex digits encryption. WEP 64 bits works. Why?
Thanks

The $ before the password didn't work. Tried WEP password and 40/128 hex but 40/128 hex won't allow a $ before the password. I wish there was a place to just use the Passphrase on the Mac. Using a linksys router.

  • New iPad asks for WiFi password. There is none. My WiFi uses WEP 128 bit encryption, but there is no "password" to enter.

Brand new to the iPad. It's asking for a password to the WiFi network in my home. There is no "password" as such associated with this WiFi network. It uses WEP 128 bit encryption where each byte is a hexadecimal number and is called a "key" Typing this lengthy thing in gives me no results. The iPad keeps on asking for a password. I have three computers and a DVD hooked to the network which has been working for a decade, so that's not the issue.
Basically I'm stuck not being able to get onto the WiFi system.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html

  • Not able to connect to wireless network using WEP 128 bit hex password

I'm using a 128 bit hex WEP password on a Belkin wireless router.
My ascii passphrase is 13 characters.
I tried using the hex password generated by the Belkin router, as well as the hex equivalent of my ascii passphrase. Every time, I am told that either "there was an error connecting to the network" or the "password is incorrect" message.
I'm using channel 7, but have also tried with channel 11.
I tried using a $ sign in front of the WEP hex password. The $ does not work with Open Internet Connect or the Airport menubar.
I can connect if I don't use any encryption on the wireless network, and also through the Ethernet cable.
I have an iBook which connects fine to the wireless network.
So why doesn't the iMac work the same way ?

The security difference between NO encryption and any form of WEP is about 2 minutes or less for somebody looking to get in... besides having WEP enabled makes you look like an easy target since you think it'll stop anything!
Either leave it off, making Hackers think at least 3 minutes about WHY, or use/setup WPA of one form or another!

  • Macbook Pro can't connect to WEP 128 bits Router.

I'll try to list everything here so you can get a clear picture of the situation.
First, after all my PCs flatmates connected to our Wireless internet (Amper aw01), I was still struggling.
I tried everything, from WEP, to WEP 128 hex, WEP 128 ASCII, writting (""), ($), (0X)........ and nothing. Connection timed out always.
Then after ******* with the routers configuration, and discovered that my PCs flatmates had an 802.1x identification/password. So I connected through it using the Airport Advanced config. But can't connect to internet despite being now connected to the network. It says that I have a self-assigned ip. I think thats because despite being autenticated though the 802.1x, I didnt passed through the WEP 128. I tried then everything again every combination but cant get through.
Right now, I'm connected using a LAN cable, and the internet works fine.
    HELP!

Type a $ sign in front of the password.

  • MC340LL/A Airport Extreme using a 128 bit 26 digit password.

I may be asking the wrong question out of ignorance, but I'm confident if I am wrong someone will set me straight. I have an old cone shaped Airport Extreme, that one that looks like a flying saucer, using a WEP 128 bit 26 digit password and at least seven networked devices (two Tivos, an Apple TV, a Ceiva frame, a printer, an iPhone and a PC laptop running Vista). If I were to upgrade to a MC340LL/A Extreme, I would like to not have to reinstall those existing devices, i.e., use a different encryption. Several questions: Will I be able to install the MC340LL/A using my existing security setup and password? Is it possible to install the MC340LL/A with more "modern" security without reinstalling my existing devices? Am I asking the right question(s) or do I not comprehend the issue(s)?

    Welcome to the discussions!
+If I were to upgrade to a MC340LL/A Extreme, I would like to not have to reinstall those existing devices, i.e., use a different encryption.+
I'll offer my opinion here and hope that you will get other varying opinions as well.
The simple answer here may that in order to meet your requirements, the Radio Modes on the new Extreme would have to be set down to the same "g" levels that you are using now.
This can be done, but other than possibly picking up a Guest network function, there would be virtually no wireless performance benefit with the change to the new Extreme. You will still be at "g" level wireless.
The exception might be if devices could use what is known as WEP Transitional Security, which would allow some "n" level wireless speeds. But, I'm not sure if your existing password would work in this arrangement, and I'm not sure that all of your devices would function at this setting.
If you have to make a switch, then it would make more sense to move to the much more secure settings offered by WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal security. (As you may be aware WEP is no longer considered secure and can be cracked by anyone with a modest toolkit).
But, I can't tell you whether the Tivos, the Ceiva, or the printer would handle this level of security. It will take some real research to learn whether devices might be compatible; and each device will need to be reinstalled with new passwords. Expect some frustration at best and probably an incompatible device or two.
The Apple devices will all handle the WPA settings and I think the PC running Vista would probably handle it as well. Can't say on the others, but if they are new...a year or two old...that would be an encouraging sign.
Please post back on your progress.

  • I want to set up WEP 128 security

I am trying to set up WEP 128 security on an Airport Extreme base station because of one older computer that is not able to handle WPA.  The box says
that this is supported, but the drop down menu for security settings does not show WEP as an option.  How can I get WEP 128 set up or do I have to return
    the hardware?

Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click on Wireless just below the row of icons
Hold down the option or alt key (it might be control on a PC) while you click on the Radio Mode selection box and select the following Radio Mode:
    802.11a --- 802.11 b/g
Now hold down the option or alt key (It might be control on a PC) while you click on the Wireless Security selection box and you will see WEP 128 BIt as a choice

  • SSL - 128 bit encryption instead of 40 bit?

    Hi,
I setup my Tomcat 4.0.3 server to use SSL as directed in a book on servlets that I bought from sun press. Everything works fine, the server starts with SSL support and you can access it with https:, download the cert, etc. I downloaded jsse 1.0.2 jar files and put them into my /jre/lib/ext/ dir as directed and created the keystore for the key with:
keytool -genkey -alias tomcat -keyalg RSA -validity 730
    also directed by the book.
My problem is that the keys generated are using 40 bit encryption instead of strong 128. I want to make the site as secure as possible and I'm wondering how to do that. I followed the directions exactly, downloaded the version of jsse for us/canada and yet my certs still say that they were encrypted with 40 bit not 128 bit encryption.
    Mike

My problem is that the keys generated are using 40 bit
encryption instead of 128. What client do you use to connect to Tomcat?
If the client does not support 128 bit keys for RC4, the browser
and SSL 3.0 may negotiate a weaker session encryption key,
    in your case 40 bit.
I don't use Tomcat, but with my web server you can configure
    the SSL protocol versions it accepts, and the ciphers it accepts;
ie I can switch off everything other than RC4-128. -- Can the same
thing be done in Tomcat, and how can it be done?

  • WEP 40/128-bit Hex and leopard

just got brand new macbook and installed leopard. as i tried to connect to the wifi the only password i could input was just a WEP password not a WEP 40/128-bit Hex that i know i have to input. i got around it by going through the assistant but every time i put my mac to sleep i have to go through the assistant to re-connect. very frustrating.

I have been playing around with this issue for a couple of weeks now and tried solutions from other related threads but nothing has worked. Here's my status as of a few days ago on a different post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5770365#5770365
    * keychain 1.0 update
    * taking control of the system keychain and manually changing passwords
    * looking for a ktext file to delete it (none found)
    * getting VM Fusion 1.1 (but I'm not on an Intel chip so that won't work)
    * Setting up a "new location" for wireless access
Today I tried these two solutions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5801108#5801108
    * Raising the priority level of wireless and deactivating ethernet and firewire
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5798767#5798767
    * rebooting in safe mode and then rebooting regularly again afterwards
My wireless network only supports WEP, and while I can connect, I have to connect using the Diagnostic Tool every time, because saved settings do not work. Any other ideas?

  • My Ipod Touch won't connect to belkin 54g router with wep password 128 bit

Well basically, I try to connect to my router it is belkin 54g, I have a 128 bit password WEP security. When I put the password in correctly, it says that it's " Unable to connect ".
However, when I only put in the first 10 hex of my password it says connected, but when I go on facebook or safari it says " No Internet Connection".
Before you refer me to any solutions these are some of the things that I have tried but didn't work:
Putting a $ sign in front of the password
    Restarting my router
Turning off security and then put back on ( When i turned it off it connected but when I turned it back on it wudnt connect)
Changing it to WPA (still doesnt work)
I have noticed that on my router, it keeps blocking me from connecting to it. All of the comptuers can connect to my router as normal however, my ipod touch can't.
It's really annoying because you can't even do half of the things without being able to connect to internet.
    Please help me

are other things still connecting to the wifi without a problem?
Have you tried resetting network settings, then unplugging modem and router from power for 40 seconds then plugging back in letting the lights stabilize and Then recconecting with the ipod>?

  • Aironet 350 in Mac OS9: 128-bit WEP possible?

Aftermarket-like, I have acquired a lovely Aironet PCM-352 card complete with the drivers on CD. I installed them with apparent success on my PowerBook G3 which runs OS 9 (OS X no-go due to FireWire issues), but it doesn't allow more than 16 hex digits for the WEP key (40bits). 128 bit is what I need. Cisco.com won't let me download new drivers, apparently since I don't have a TAC contract. Surely there are wiser places than here to post these questions, but:
    - Is it possible, with newer drivers, to do 128-bit WEP keys with this model of Aironet card?
    - Where to get those drivers, absent spending a grillion dollars for an otherwise useless tech support contract?

PCMCIA adapter firmware version is V4.25.30 which supports 128 bit encrytpion.

  • 128 bit WEP

Dear all, I have posted this in the Airport Extreme forum as well, but it sort of fits into both, so sorry for repetition!
I have an AE base station that is used to provide network access for a number of machines, most on AE cards, but one (G4 733mhz) has an original airport card. Until recently, I have had security set to 40 bit WEP, not wonderful I know, but I wasn't too concerned. However I recently allowed a PC to connect, and our local IT unit has suggested that, as PC's are more at risk, security should be at 128 bit. I set this up and I have had no end of problems with the G4. All of the other machines (with AE cards) have been fine. The G4 however either takes multiple trys to connect, or connects and then drops out. I first thought that the card might be failing, but having tried another one the same problems exist. I then thought curruption in keychain - but a untouched admin account seems to have the same issues. I have gone back to 40 bit and the problem appears to have gone. Has anyone seen these issues with original airport cards and 128 WEP?
    thanks for your help
    Andrew Platt

I have the same problem, I recently got an old G3 Blueberry iBook, and it works with no or 40 WEP, but i kick it up to 128, and it wont connect... I have seen Airport cards for sale that say "128" version.. I am wondering if the older cards can be up;graded through firmware of something, or maybe have to be using OS X (currently running OS 9)

  • IPad WiFi password problem fixed by switching to 128-bit encryption

Upon waking, my iPad would often prompt me to re-enter my WiFi password, or simply say that it wasn't connected to the internet.
I was using an old D-Link Router with 64-bit WEP encryption. After talking to a senior support tech, I switched the WEP to 128-bit and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
This is still a bug, because if you're in some random hotel, you can't change the router settings. But this workaround may help until a patch is released.

  • WEP # for 128 Bit; where do I find it?

I recently bought a Logitech internet radio (Squeeze Box). I have an Airport Extreme. In setting the radio up to recognize my wireless network, it's asking for a "WEP Key". Where do I find this? I have the Airport set up as 128 bit WEP, so I think the number should be 26 digits. Can anyone help??

When you setup the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) for WEP, you used the WEP Transitional Security Network which uses a 13-character password. For non-AirPort devices to connect, you just need to determine the Equivalent Network Password, and then use this password in the settings for the Squeeze Box.

  • How do I put in a WEP 104 bit  HEX WY-FY Password?

How do I enter my network router's WY-FY WEP 104 bit encryption password into my iPhone.
The phone only takes ASCII charactors  not HEX.

You should just be able to enter the 0-9a-f hex digits of your WEP password.
HOWEVER, you can ONLY enter WEP Key 1.  WEP Keys 2, 3 and 4 are not support by any Apple products.
If you create an exactly 13 character ascii WEP Key 1 password on your WiFi base station, then the ascii password can be entered instead of the hex value, as 13 ascii characters is represented by 26 hex digits which is 104 bits.  And all WEP implementation take 13 character ascii password one-for-one to their hex respresentation without any any munging of the values.
And if entering the 0-9a-f values does not work, try preceeding the value with a dollar sign $, as that convention is often used to indicate the passwrod value is actually a hex value, although I have not seen it used on an Apple device for years.  But what the heck.
However, as deggie has said, WEP is insecure.  At most it keeps honest people honest as they will not accidentally connect to your network.  But there is software easily available that will crack a WEP password in less than 60 seconds.
