  • Since upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open, the celluar network goes to No Service and the only way to fix it is to reboot it and this takes longer than before.  Has Microsoft taken over Apple software?

SInce upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad 2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open pages, cellular network goes to No Service requiring a reboot (and this takes longer than before), in summary, I now have a fancy paperweight, i used to love my ipad.  I feel as if Microsoft has taken charge of the Apple Software Division.

Sorry if someone sees this post in a different thread; Just want to get some additional exposure.. Who knows, maybe someone from Apple will take note..
The glitchy, unresponsive, slow and outright crashes are something you would expect in a less superior product.  I paid what I consider a premium because of the perceived integrity of the company and quality of their products. I am not going to go as far to say Apple ***** and so do their products; but they have to to a better job of acknowledging problems and providing recourse.  Right now, it "feels" like they don't care about existing customers.  I am not sure of the exact #'s, but I believe products like the Ipad2 represent a significant population of their existing Ipad product base.
So what is my specific rant; If Apple is going to take a long time, or worst, NOT fix the problems introduced in IOS 8 for IPAD  2, give us the option of going back to IOS 7.  I would say most everyone was extremely happy with their product running under that OS and would migrate back in a heartbeat.  By blocking this option, it feels like Apple is saying that the only recourse is to live with crappy performance, wait forever without any real news, or throw away your Ipad 2 and buy a newer model.  Right now this is 100% completely unacceptable, and I, as will thousands of others, will watch how this unfolds when we do buy new products.  Most technology products only have short, finite lifespan and I would think it is at very least very important to Apple to retain customer base in a highly competitive marketplace.  I'm done...

But It all starts when I try to basiclly go to another page , its now using higher then safari and rapidlly increasing(and even faster when Flash is in use). Right now the process is using 170 000 K and Safari is using around 130 000 K while im typing this. When i go to youtube it uses 290 000 K and safari runs slower. Its even worse with games when i tested a game

  • Does LUKS encryption slow down the system?

How fast is the system after you encrypt / and /home partitions? Does anybody notice any difference compared to unencrypted partitions?
I'm thinking about encrypting partitions, but for speed reasons I don't know should I encrypt just /home or also the / partition.
I found nothing on LUKS homepage.

Technically it must be a little slower, but I never could notice it at all. If you do try it, watch top while you're working, the amount of CPU used by "kcryptd" is basically the amount of power you're giving up.

  • XTorrent slowing down Safari.

    Anyone else noticed this today?
I have 8mb download speeds, even though my line is supposed to only support 4mbs. But when I have xTorrent open it causes Safari to load web pages ridiculously slow.

    Hi Carolyn,
I emptied the cache, reset Safari, deleted the Preferences files, etc. as suggested but Safari is still searching "the last item" for a few minutes. The article you refer to says that […] +if your cache gets too big or corrupted as your computer will spend excess time searching the cache when it could fetch the data from the internet in less time+. Could it be that Safari is taking all this time to load a page because it's going through all those Top Sites it keeps?

  • What's slowing down Safari 4.0.3 ?

Lets say a site has 43 items. Safari will load 42 in the blink of an eye and then take forever (2 to 5 min.) to load the last item (as per the Status Bar at the bottom of the window). Same thing happens if a site has 240 items; Safari loads 239 faster than I can type these words, and hang for at least 2 min. on the last item. Same thing if a site has only 5 items.
I use a 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac and Snow Leopard.
Is there a procedure I could do to correct this problem?

  • Does encryption slow down external HD?

    Hello,
I just got my 3TB external HD delivered, I'm mainly going to use it for movie and photo storage and a Time Machine backup. Nothing spectacular.
It's currently FAT formatted, so obviously I want to reformat it.
    Which one should I chose:
    - Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    - Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)
    Questions:
    1. Is writing on a Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) formatted external HDslower than on a Mac OS Extened (Journaled) formatted external HD?
    2. Should I only encrypt the whole external HD when formatting, only the Time Machine, or both?
I tried, but couldn't find any hard data on this on the internet.
    Thanks in advance.

    Should I decide to encrypt:
Should I only encrypt the whole external HD when formatting, only the Time Machine, or both?

  • Kaspersky slowing down Safari?

    Good evening,
I have a quick question.  I am still new to Macs, I've had my Macbook Pro for about a year.  My laptop generally runs fast on wifi, 20 down 6 up from speedtest dot net.  I recently installed Kaspersky, I read decent reviews and was going to be moving a iTunes library from a PC that I feared had viruses and wanted to be cautious.  Anyways since I installed it my connectivity has been terrible( 6 down 3 up) so I tried closing it.  Now everything seems fine again.  Just looking for some advice from seasoned Mac users.  Should I keep the program and just run it as I see fit then close it down or should I return it and uninstall?  Sorry if this is a noobish question.
    Thanks,
    Jason

I don't trust Kaspersky ever since their Flashback removal tool borked a bunch of people's systems, making it impossible for them to log in.  There are more reliable anti-virus tools to use instead, if your bank requires you to keep such software installed.  I would guess they'd have a hard time arguing if you put Sophos on your machine instead, and version 8 is compatible with ML.
Regarding the question of whether or not you need AV software, see my Mac Malware Guide.

WEP is discouraged nowadays. Try WPA, probably 'WPA/WPA2 Personal'.

  • Safari is slow to open and close. It also slows down other apps while running. Should I reload safari and if so, how do I do so?

Safari is slow to open and close. It also slows down other apps while it is running. How can I resolve this issue?

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.
If there's no improvement, continue as follows.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Test.

  • How do I fix a Safari application that slows down and freezes everything?

Apple called last fall and said my particular Mac had a hard disk problem and they replaced it at the Apple store in late January 2013.  I backed up the information on an external harddrive and used Time Machine before to transfer all the information to the new drive. Everything worked well and I finally put on Mountain Lion at 10.8.4.  I also have Carbonite as a backup and it apparently was not enabled when I transferred the files until early May.  In early May I had not used my iMac for about a month and when I started it I found about 40 named file folders on the Desktop that were empty.  Some of those had named items in them but when I clicked on them they would dissappear.  The actual files did exist and were not effected when I dumped the apparent alias folders. Safari started and would be ok at first but if I went away for an hour it would slow down.  I took it in to the Genius Bar at Apple and they ran some tests and got rid of MacKeeper which they felt was causing the problem.  I got my Mac back home and it still started slow but worked well at first and then started going slow.  If I opened Word it would also start working at a slower speed.  I needed to force quit Safari and the Word progran in order to quit or restart the Mac.  I got an appointment for the next day and they ran all sorts of tests and the hard drive was working normally. They tried tweeking different areas and sent me home again.  When I started working again it did the same thing, I would start out fine and eventually slow down and needed to be force quit to get out of it. A message came up indicating my MasOSX startup disk had no more space available for applications memory.  I took it in a third time and the Genius went to the Activity Monitor and the Safari PID was 221 and %CPU 107, Threads 21 Real Mem 2.73 GB, Virtual Mem 22.00 Kind, Intel (64).  I had no idea what that meant. I went home again and it still ran slow and couldn't run the programs for any length of time before it ran slow and affected the other programs so they would only quit if I used Force quit.  I took it in for the forth time an they decided to keep it overnight. They ran ASD first to rule out memory.  They noticed during the appointment the computer was slow to perform normal tasks such as showing boot options, booting into user, bootingto external user.  If the ASD passed then they would perform erase and install and only restore users and application files from backup drive.  They did this on Wed and Thur. night and I took it home Friday night, June 14 and it still has the same problem. Typing this message right now means typing and waiting for the words to appear.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Why does my animation slow down in safari?

i've created an animation at 75 fps. when i open the .swf
file with safari the animation is slowed down. why is this?
also, Explorer can't even open the file. i suppose i need a
flash player for Explorer. I should probably also upgrade from 5.2,
    huh? hahahaha

And yet I have built an entire career on animation with
flash. I will admit, being a toon boom user,
the difference is huge - TBS has a lot more desireable
features - but flash is flash - it is pretty
convenient that the entire world browsing the internet has
the flash player - and flash does have
one of the most intuitive timelines ever. TBS is still in the
dark ages with exposure sheet style
animation - it's traditional and that's fine, but serves very
    little purpose in regards to
    computer-based animation.
The general statement that flash is not an animation tool is
like saying that a ferrari is not for
    driving.

  • Safari slowing down my system?

I swore by Safari when I first started using it back in 2008, but the latest version with 'webkit2webprocess.exe" is causing some huge slow downs.  I just can't figure out what's wrong, and why safari is sudenly a lumbering beast instead of the sleek predator that it used to be.
My system constantly caches, the bhard drive is constantly w eatorking with this thing installed.  It eats up RAM, and more ram, and never dumps anything, untiol there's no more page filing space.  Even now, after I wrote that last sentence my HD went active again.  Sure enough, "webkit2" is eating up naerly a half gig of ram.  And now when I type, I can't see what I'm typing.  and now it's eating up my video ram because I've run out of file page space.
who the upgraded this thing, the marx brothers?
thjis used to be the best brower on the market, but hnow it's JUST a piece of ram eating junk.

I also finger McAffee as the culprit, it's not necessary on Mac's as of 10.6.8+ Apple installed their own anti-OS X malware detector and it checks for updates like every 26 hours or so.
If you need to clean the Windows malware off their files, the free ClamXav does the job nicely and doesn't bugger up the machine as it's run as you need it.
For your other slowdown issues, I suggest you look through these tips of mine, my Snow Leopard is incredibly fast.
