WEP password change to WPA2 on MBP w/Tiger

I need to change the WEP password to WPA2 on my older MBP Titanium in order for it to recognize
my network (which uses WPA2) using a new Airport Extreme.
Right now I cannot connect to the web or printer or talk to my newer MBP.
In system Preferences, Network, Airport, there is no 'advanced' feature to be able to do this.
How can I change this so I can connect with my network? Thanks in advance.

Here's the procedure.

  • CHANGING WEP PASSWORD

How do I find and change my wep password? It has 27 or so characters and is a real pain when I have to use it. Plus I can never remember where it lives.
    Thanks
    Scott

If your Airport has a choice of WPA, definitely use that. WPA2 if it has it. WEP was cracked long ago. Anyone with the right software can snag your password in literally less than 10 seconds and start using your bandwidth parked out in front of your house.
And the longer the password, the better. Preferably random letters and numbers. Dictionary words are the easiest to break as a hacker can just start trying the most commonly used words one after another until they're in.

  • How do I change to 'Key 2' given WEP password

I'm trying to connect my MBP to a secure network (DLink 802.11g router). I have the WEP (40-bit Hex)....however, the Network Administrator told me they're using 'Key 2' instead of "Key 1' (with the router I guess?). Neither of us could find a way to change that setting in the MBP Network Settings.
BTW, I've seen the 'don't use WEP use WAP' comments but it's not my network.
I hoped this thread would answer my question:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1056070&tstart=200
and follwed the link provided by Ned Snowing:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106424
....but the recommendations didn't help. I tried both $ and 0x before the WEP password to no avail.
Airport detects the network and Airport Status indicates a strong signal level
& says the laptop is connected. However, when I launch Safari I get the error message: "You are not connected to the Internet. Safari can't open the page http://livepage.apple.com/ because your computer isn't connected to the Internet."
Network Diagnostics shows a yellow status light and the "You're connected with a self-assigned address and may not be able to connect to the internet" - or something like that - message
Any ideas of how to change to Key 2? Thanks in advance!

BTW, I've conected to at leat 2 other secure networks with their WEPs (mine and my neighbor's) with no problem, but neither of those routers has been changed from Key 1 to Key 2 or Key whatever.
I've connected to numerous public WiFi networks too with no problem.

  • In lion how to change wep password

In lion, i cannot change the wep password. I tried to use the network utility, but for some reason, in advanced, selecting the network name does not bring up the edit icon. I can only add of delete the name. Deleting the name does not delete the old passcode. If i try to join the network again, the old passcode is remembered. I tried to delete this code within the keychain, but this did not make my brandnew macbook pro forget the passcode.

It was because the password was typed incorrect. I reset to default and all is well. Thanks for the response.

  • I just secured my WiFi with a WEP password. I can connect my MacBookAir and iPhone, but not the MacBook Pro (MBP using Lion-MBA Mountain Lion, iPhone iOS6

Using a DLinkVWR (Vonage enabled) router, I just secured the home WiFi with a WEP password. No problem in establishing a WiFi connection on my MacBook Air (OS Mountain Lion 10.8.2) or with my iPhone using iOS6. They both accepted the password and connected directly.
Not so with my wife's MacBook Pro, using the latest version of Lion, 10.7.5. It can find the WiFi, but upon attempting to connect, the alert is shown that there is no internet connection. This is unique to this MacBook Pro. The drop down menu shows the router checked and 4 bars, but the Alert remains: No Internet Connection.
What am I doing wrong? This MacBook Pro connected without problem before I secured the router.

WEP as a security measure is laughable nowadays. Even a kindergarten kid with a netbook can crack the password in a few minutes. Try using WPA2 if available on the device. And the Macs will be quite happy connecting with that protocol.

  • My Time Capsule (gen 3) is being hacked via Wi-fi despite WPA2 password changes, anyone else?

I have a recent 1 TB Time Capsule (gen3) that is now being hacked into via wi-fi on a regular basis. I can't seem to stop it despite repeated password changes. The hacker seems able to re-enter witin minutes of a password change on the TC. And even if I manually disconnect the TC from the ISP's cable modem. Hence the hack seems to be via wi-fi.  Computer passes anti-virus scans from several different brands. Traffic doesn't seem to show up in Little Snitch. Am thinking that someone has developed a new way to crack Apple's encryption for the Time Capsule.  This may be a vulnerability in the new June update for TC. Anyone had a similar experience? Hacker appears as a new connected PC under "Shared" in Finder's side bar.

Exactly what are you seeing that causes you to suspect that the TC has been hacked?  Unplug your Xerox devices and see if the mystery device disappears from the network.  Also be aware that all network devices, including network printers, can be hacked.
If someone has cracked the WPA2 encryption so that they can read your wifi traffic they would have to be within wifi range, which means they're very close to you.  That would allow you to create a short list of neighbors who have that kind of technical skill or give you an opportunity to glance through the windows of the cars parked within wifi range of your home to see who's sitting in there with a laptop.
Otherwise, if your network is compromised, it's more likely that you have a hacked computer on your network that gives the hacker access to the TC through the LAN.

  • IPad WEP password required after power off.

    Hi,
On my ipad mini I am required to re-enter my WEP password after power off.
Why is this and how do I prevent it from happening?
This does not occur on my mbp or iphone 4s.
    Thanks,
    Rob.

Although it should work flawlessly, for some reason mobile devices don't always play nice with WEP.  You're far better off  with WPA2 (security-wise)  anyway.  If you have the ability to change your network's security, it might be easier to just get away from WEP than to try to make your mini work with it.

  • WEP Password

Bought a new Mac Book Pro yesterday, unpacked and set it up. All things working except for connecting to my wireless router.
Airport picks up the wifi network (let's call it SAM) but does not connect to it. I get a "password failed" message.
SAM is working fine. Three XP laptops and two iPhone are connected to. All using using a WEP 64bit ASCII key (password). And idea why AirPort is behaving this way?

Macs don't work well with WEP. Change it to WPA2 and things should work well.

  • Wireless problem - WEP password doesn't work - connection timed out

The problems with leopard connecting to wireless networks is documented all over the forums
But anyway, below is a solution from fred (Genius!!) it comes from
    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-375266.html
You have to do this through SAFARI (then for me camino worked perfectly as well)
    1. When you awaken Leopard you get the "None of your preferred networks are available" message.
    Cancel it.
    2. Ask Safari to open any page. It will, of course, hang with the message "You are not connected to the Internet."
Click on the "Network Diagnostics..." button in the message box.
    3. You should get a dialog box titled "Network Diagnostics". The list of "locations" should have the name of your usual network setup highlighted in gray. All the network status signals down the left side will be red.
Click on the "Continue" button in the dialog box.
    4. You should see a fresh Network Diagnostics box subtitled "Choose network port configuration"
Click on the AirPort radio button.
    Then click on continue.
    5. The Network Diagnostics box should be refreshed. You should now see "Select AirPort network" as a subtitle, and one or more wireless network names listed.
Click on your wireless network name (the one your AirPort knows).
    Click the Continue button.
    6. Type your password in the Password box in the next refresh. (No need for a $. Just your password.) (Don't bother checking the Remember password... box. It seems non-functional.)
    7. Click the Continue button.
    8. The Network Fairy awakens, makes all the status signals on the left green, turns on your wireless signal strength icon in the top bar, loads your Safari page, and leaves you with the message: "Your Internet connection appears to be working correctly."
    9. Beats me why the "other" WEP password entry process consistently fails.
    Fred

I must have missed something the first time around with the G3....
I changed the encryption to WPA/WPA2 Personal and all my Expresses AND my G3 iBooks all connect just fine. I still can't get my iPaq 2495b to connect however... It "sees" the router, but just wont connect. As I mentioned before, it does connect if unencrypted with no password, so the problem obviously lies with the password.
The iPaq Authentication choices are: Open,Shared, WPA, and WPA-PSK. There is a second box for Data Encryption with choices of: WEP or TKIP.
I have tried every combination, all to no avail. I have NOT tried stuff like inserting "$" signs, etc.
    Any ideas?

  • Internet sharing WEP password problems

    Hi,
I just bought a new Ipod Touch (2nd gen, 2.1 software). To connect to the internet, I share the internet connection from my MacBook Pro using the airport. I added a 40-bits WEP password. The first time I use it, it works perfectly fine, but if I turn off the airport and restart the sharing again, my iPod touch is not able to join anymore. The error message says "wrong password". If I open the sharing preferences in the mac and reset the password, it works again, but it is very annoying to do it every time.
    Has anyone experienced this issue?
    thanks,
    C.A.

... a few months later, you get a response.
I don't know if our issues are related, but I found that if I simply turn off airport on my MBP, and the turn it back on the ipod will reconnect (no need to change the pw).
My issue was just with the internet sharing connection dropping every 2 - 5 minutes. I'm trying a static IP on my ipod... maybe that will help.
Anybody else encounter this type of thing?

  • WEP Password question

    Hi,
I have my router set up with a password, and also my network has a WEP password. My network is called NETGEAR, and usually in the airport menu it has a small padlock icon next to the word NETGEAR.
This padlock does not appear now. My mac is set up to automatically join this network but I'm concerned why the padlock icon is not showing. My network settings say it is password protected, and i still have to log on to my router home page, so it SEEMS like nothing has changed.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

    FYI
    1. WEP is not secure and can be cracked using tools readily available on the internet.
    2. Using the default SSID of 'NETGEAR' also informs a potential hacker what kind of router your using so would know its default login and password.
The only wireless security you should consider using is WPA or WPA2. I would also suggest you change the SSID to something that does not identify the make of your router.

  • WEP Password Not Accepted

I have a Netgear router which hosts the 802.11g wireless network in my house. We have 4 computers that connect, 2 are macs. My iBook G4 was recently reformatted, and now I cant connect to my network. The network has a 10 digit numerical WEP password, and the other computers in the house connect to it just fine. When I type in the password, it says "There was an error connecting to the airport network". Using network setup assistant, i get the message "The password you entered is invalid". I have checked and double checked and the password is right. What could be the problem?

herzeleid22, Welcome to the discussion area!
If all of your equipment supports WPA2 or WPA, I would change the encryption to that. That eliminates the incompatibilities that appear in WEP.
If you must use WEP, change to a 13 character password as recommended in KB 108058, Choosing a password for networks that use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).

  • WEP Password Won't Work!

I have a Wireless router, which can do WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption. If I have WPA2, then my desktop (Windows) can't remember the password, so that encryption is out for the mo, WPA won't work on our old laptop, and so WEP is all that's left. Every device in my house (including my iPhone) can connect, but my MacBook fails too! I have tried loads of different WEP passwords, and it can still connect to other WEP protected networks, but not mine! Is there anything I could have done, or is this a general problem?

Just like Windows stores your network profile info in C:\Document and Settings, the mac stores your network location in a plist file.
WEP is really for B/G networks, most newer networks are using WPA/WPA2 because it is more secure.
Can you connect to WPA2 Personal with the mac and that router?
Can you create a new Windows profile under network settings? (you should be able to).
Sometimes if you cannot connect using ASCII character for the password, look at your Key 1: on Windows for the Hex version of the password and try typing the Hex in the password box.
IF your password for WEP is short, like less than 8 characters, that may be the problem, it order to get WPA2 you need a password at least 8 characters long, 10 is better and more accepted by encryption schemas. Try adding 1234 to the end of your existing password (i.e. password1234) in the router, then input it again to see if it works. Try making the password exactly 10 characters long if you can.
WEP is like having no security at all, WPA/WPA2 is much more secure.

  • Where do I put in the WEP password?

I used another computer to change the WEP password for my wireless network.
My Mac no longer connects. I have searched the menus to find out out how to put in the new WEP but all I find is info about an "Airport" which I am sure I do not have. My wireless modem is a Netopia and it works fine with all PCs except the MAC.

Open Network in *System Preferences*. Choose Airport ,this is your wireless component on the MacBook, Where it says *By default, join:* choose *Preferred Networks*. A window will open in the network page now click the plus sign. A separate window will pop up. Put the *Network Name:* in. Then for *Wireless Security:* choose *WEP Password* then click OK.
I always pick the *Show AirPort status in the menu bar* this gives any easy access point for airport and shows a signal strength indicator when on.

i just had a new hard drive installed. After loading everything back on my computer from external drive, i came to the "select wireless network screen. I've misplaced the WEP password for my internet. Is there anyway to find it on another computer?

Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.
