WEP password issues

Hello
Setting up a mixed PC and iMac wireless network.
PC connects fine. Set encryption to WEP 128 and away we go.
Mac sees the secure network but will not connect. Have tried inputting the WEP key in both hex and plain format but it just errors.
Reset network to unsecured and the Mac logs on fine. Reset WEP password and it's a no go again. Router is a Zycxel, iMac is an intel dual core.
Am I making a basic mistake here?

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I've tried the $ before the actually password.
I think it's now resolved. This is what I did:
Logged on to the NetGear's admin web-page (via Ethernet cable connected directly to it).
Changed the channel to 11.
Selected WEP 128bit and entered the password (without 0x or $).
Somehow it now works!
Went to Key Access to examine the password, and noted that 0x was prefixed automatically to the password.
Dunno whether it's a Mac issue or NetGear!

WEP Password Issue: Linksys

I have a PC and a Mac Laptop that are connected to my SSID. I just got a brand new MacBook Pro (literally out of the box) and it sees the SSID but won't accept the password, which is weird since I have another Mac laptop sitting right next to it connected. I've tried restarting everything (modem, router),airport is on, tried typing various keys with the password, everything that was suggested in the forums.

I need some expert advice.

First of all you could save all this WEP trouble shooting right now. Don't use WEP it is not secure and can be hacked in no time at all with tools readily available on the internet.
The only wireless security you should consider using is WPA/WPA2
Is it a Mac thing or do you think it's a Linksys Router problem? I hear Linksys isn't exactly plug and play with Macs.
All ethernet routers are plug n play with Macs.
connect your mac directly to the linksys box with an ethernet cable then depending which model router you have goto http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1
login with username admin password admin.
or leave the username blank but use 'admin' as the password.
You then should be able to access the linksys main configuration page.
remember in the wireless security your using WPA with wpa-psk passphrase.

Severe Network Password issues

Hi all, this is my first post here.
Of the four computers accessing our router, 3 of them work fine (2 PCs and 1 x Apple PowerBook on OS 10.3.9 over airport).
The machine with the internet connection that no longer works well is my G5. I recently updated the airport software through software update--my thoughts are, does this contain firmware that may have interfered?:
The curious thing is that after performing a clean install with the system discs (10.3.3) and when trying to connect to 'a specific network' as before, the airport sees the network name correctly, but when selected, internet connect now prompts for a WEP password, where it never used to--and it DOESN'T connect--returning an 'Error connecting to MyNetwork' message...
This is the same WEP key as entered in to System Prefs > Network > 'a specific network' > Password--which used to be perfectly adequate.
I am actually now booted from my external clone FW 800 drive, which was a backup from September when everything worked fine--and guess what--my clone network settings work absolutely fine and I can connect to the internet and sit here writing this post, no problem...
So because of this I don't believe that it is a hardware issue.
However, when performing a clean installation of 10.3.3 and choosing to 'transfer user network data' from a previous mac (in this instance my boot clone), everything clones perfectly EXCEPT the network password settings which refuse to connect to the internet and behave again, in the manner described above.
I have run all sorts of disc tests, clean installs that transfer no data from anything previous whatsoever, with various updates applied, and yes, even copied my clone drive using superduper back onto the main system disc as an erase and install clone of my boot clone... to no avail.
A small gllimmer of hope appeared briefly when having cleared the PRAM on startup, after a few more identical attempts at entering the password on a clean install (with NO data transferred from the boot clone on install), the airport DID make a connection. But only briefly, it gave up the connection after a short while and reverted to the error messages as before.
What is frustrating is that surely if it was a Keychain issue, any keychain info would be zeroed from the clean install. The Airport can see the router, but wont connect without the correct password. I've tried addding $ signs in front of the password too, and like I say, it did connect once for about five minutes and then died again...
And the really annoying thing is that it works fine when I boot up in the boot clone!!!
Any ideas, help and suggestions will be really really appreciated.

The password you are being asked for is the Base Station password. The default is "public." If this was changed, you can perform a "soft" reset on the AX to get it back.

WEP Password Only Works on 2 out of 3 Computers

I'm having trouble with one of three computers connecting wirelessly to the internet.
The three computers are MacBookAir, iPad and PowerBook G4. The first two connect fine. The PB does not.
The router is a plain vanilla Linksys WRT54G. I have it set for WEP Password protection. The wireless network name appears on all three computers. I have entered the 10-digit password on each. The PB keeps returning the not-very-helpful "There was an error" when trying to connect.
I tried trashing network and internet config prefs. When running the network assistant on this PB, it says the password is incorrect.
I have checked the password multiple times, and it is correct. I have typed it again, and the same error occurs.
I also checked the MBA to see if I could see the password, but for whatever reason the "show password" box is grayed out. I have retyped the correct password, however, and connectivity is still good. I have no idea how to review the password on the iPad; I just typed it in and it works. There are no network diagnostic tools available that I can find or any visible place where the number may be verified.
I have turned off and turned on airport. I have deleted all network choices in the airport networking settings, shut down and restarted with the same result. (Airport Status in the network pane has a red dot and says, "Airport is turned on but not connected to a network."
I'm out of ideas. Does anyone have a suggestion?
The PB is a 1.5G G4 running 10.4.11

First, why use WEP? It's next to useless as an encryption techology which can be broken in less than 15 minutes with commonly available tools on the internet. Use WPA or WPA2 Personal. All 3 of your systems support both of those.
That aside, did you try using the Powerbook and WRT54G with no encryption, as a starting point? If that doesn't work, then there's a different non-encryption-related issue. If that works, try WPA or WPA2 Personal.

Keeps forgetting WEP password

I use WEP as my wife's PC doesn't seem to manage WPA.
Once or twice a week my MacBook forgets the WEP key. When I go to Network Settings and edit the entry for my network the setting says:
Password: none
When I reselect 'WEP password' and check 'Show password' half of the password is missing
So I re-enter it, turn airport on and off and usually I get back on-line. Sometimes it refuses to accept the password and I have to plug in a cable...
After a few days it works again.
(All the time my wife's PC is working fine - and I've tried rebooting the Access Point, a Netgear WGR614v4 latest firmware)
...and the MacBook has all updates including the latest shutdown squashing SMC, and it has happened since that update.
So is this a bug, or wot?

Might be a bug, try this even if it says it's a bit
different from your problem, has worked on some WEP
as well as the stated WPA issue...

Actually, I have done this a few times when I have had the bug (not from following the instructions, it seemed the 'obvious' thing to try to reset things to me). So it must be a good suggestion
It didn't help.
Other than that, I'd run Disk Utility from the CD/DVD
to Repair Disk & Permissions,
then use Keychain
Access to Repair Keychain, or replace that Key.
I use SuperDuper for backups which runs Repair Disk before each cloning. I'll try these suggestions the next time it happens.
Might even be a HW issue such as RAM.

Airport express not allowing PC or xbox on to network with WEP password

Hi there
Ever since we switched from PC to Mac about 5 years ago our airport express (purchased 2007) has not allowed a PC or other gaming device on to it's network. I have two MacBooks at the moment which needed to be configured with slightly different IPv4 addresses in order to be on the network. That was about a year ago when we bought a new MB and I thought it strange when both computers would not connect and it was a bit of a drama lugging both computers to the store in order for the techs to manually fix the issue.
Now we have an international student living with us and it is very important that he is able to connect with his PC to our network. My son's DS and xbox is never allowed to connect to our network using the WEP password that we use for our Macs. It is a very frustrating situation now as I do not think that the Mac store can help us out since I asked for advice a while ago when trying to connect my son's gaming consoles and they said they could not help with non apple products. This is a little odd as I thought that Airport would connect all devices. Our internet provider cannot help us as it is NOT a modem issue.
I should also add that at least twice a day our Macbooks 'fall off' our network and we have to turn the airport off and on in order to reboot the connection. I also have an iphone and that connects to our network although occasionally it will ask me to rejoin and prompt me to enter the password which I do but it rejects it. I usually press cancel and for some reason it connects fine despite not accepting the password.
My question is this: Can I connect other devices to airport and if so, how? Or is our airport faulty and should I replace it? I really don't want to buy a new device if the same problem is still going to occur.

Internet sharing WEP password problems

Hi,
I just bought a new Ipod Touch (2nd gen, 2.1 software). To connect to the internet, I share the internet connection from my MacBook Pro using the airport. I added a 40-bits WEP password. The first time I use it, it works perfectly fine, but if I turn off the airport and restart the sharing again, my iPod touch is not able to join anymore. The error message says "wrong password". If I open the sharing preferences in the mac and reset the password, it works again, but it is very annoying to do it every time.
Has anyone experienced this issue?

I don't know if our issues are related, but I found that if I simply turn off airport on my MBP, and the turn it back on the ipod will reconnect (no need to change the pw).
My issue was just with the internet sharing connection dropping every 2 - 5 minutes. I'm trying a static IP on my ipod... maybe that will help.
Anybody else encounter this type of thing?

Saving WEP password

I've got D-Link router, an XP machine, a Palm TX and WEP 128-bit, 4 key encryption, and SSID broadcast off. Both connect just fine with stored WEP keys. But my iBook 10.4.3 requires me to select Other..., enter my SSID (even though it's set to connect automatically to my SSID in the System Preferences) and my password. Am I wrong in assuming that Apple won't allow storing of passkeys so when you connect it's automatic like it is on my XP and Palm? Prior to setting up encryption, I had SSID off and whenever I opened my iBook, it would find and connect with no problems, so it's not a connection issue, and once I enter the network name and 13 charachter key, it connects fine. I just want this transparent. I've even got MAC filtering on the router set, so I shouldn't have any snoopers get on my network, but I want the added layer of WEP. If I can't save the WEP password with my iBook, I'll turn off WEP. It's not worth the hassle.
When opening the iBook before, it would show my SSID in the drop down list, but now it won't with the WEP. Is this why I don't have an option to Join then "save password"? When I've tried to join other networks to see what it does that are secured, it asks if I want to join and to enter a password. Is it going through Other... that is why I can't save my passkey?

I had a similar issue some time ago. I solved it by opening the Keychain application and deleting the "system" item which stores the WEP password. This "system" item had a closed lock. After that I had to go through the WEP settings once more and when I checked the Keychain again it had the WEP "system" item with an opened lock. Since then my iBook remembers the WEP settings.

Printer wont connect when wep password enabled

Hi. I've had a HP Deskjet 5850 for many years. It worked perfectly with my D-Link wifi router, it connected wirelessly with no issues. I recently bought an airport extreme, I've reset everything on the printer and it works via ethernet, but it only works via wifi when airport is set for wireless security is set to none. If I assign a password of any sort it won't connect.
In the printer's admin webpage I've set and reset it for a wep password and it wont connect. Does anyone know if this printer is compatible with airports wep password protection?

I created a WEP password, this is what the printer supports. However, even my MacBook had issues logging in with WEP, it would get bumped off the network and then could only log into the my airport extreme's wireless network after a restart... and then it would get bumped off again. So I switched the airport to WPA/WPA2 password and the macbook works fine now, and the connection is faster than it was with a WEP password. Does the AirPort have known issues with WEP?

The use of WEP is not recommended for compatibility, reliability, performance, and security reasons; WEP is insecure and functionally obsolete. Any reason you're using WEP? I ask, because you might as well not have any security at all, & this is most likely your issue.

Leopard prompts for 802.1X username and password instead of WEP password

hey!
so i got leopard on friday and i haven't been able to connect to my wireless properly since.
i have an old D-Link DI-624 (Revision B) router that i have protected with a WEP password. in tiger i never had any problems with this, but now instead of prompting me for a WEP password when i try to connect, leopard prompts me to enter username and password and below there is a dropdown entitled 802.1X with options automatic and TTLS-PAP.
if i try to enter my WEP password as the password, the connection fails.
i know that the issue is not the router because my girlfriend is still running tiger and has no issues.
i ran that login and keychain update and that didn't help. i also deleted that old airport driver file that other people had mentioned for other airport issues and that didn't do anything either.
any ideas??

IPhone 3G Will Not Connect To Home Wi Fi Password Issue

I discovered a solution to a password issue that I did not find a solution to here. I am posting it for karmic equity.
I have a brand new CISCO N wireless router set for WEP. I did not have security on my old router.
When I tried to join my secure wireless network, iPhone 3G would not accept/ recognize my new network password ("Unable to join the network ...."). Even I entered the correct "password" I could not get on the network. I could join onto the network as "guest" using my password but only as guest, and I had to go through the Safari browser, Wi-Fi Networks, Choose a Network.... would NOT work as guest
To connect iPhone to the password secured network (and it will automatically join in the future:
GOTO Settings
GOTO Wi-Fi Networks
GOTO Other Network
Enter name of your network
GOTO Security
Select your security (mine is WEP)
GOBACKTO Other Network
PASSWORD: !!!! Not my "network" password!!!! Its actually my "wireless key" which is like 8476G29765. CISCO refered to it as the "PASSPHRASE". My password only gets me into the router, or connected as "Guest" but not connected to the network.
Note please that I could long onto the network as "guest" using my password, that was something like "password". Again, to log onto the network I had to use the kryptic "8476G29765" passphrase that my router generated, but I entered it in SETTINGS / WiFi Networks/ Other Network....
Other methods may work as well, I dont know, but this worked like a charm.

Try restarting your WiFi routers by removing power for 30 seconds. Note that WiFi is not automatically fine just because some devices may be working with it.
On your iPad use Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings
Try to connect.

Possible solution to wi-fi password issues in OS X Lion

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read this forum post.
In this post, I shall be outlining the possible solution to the wi-fi password issues that have surfaced in Lion, and will no doubt be fixed by Apple in an coming update. This is sort of a temporary thing that I found to work.
To backtrack in regards to the previous operating system, Snow Leopard, if you wanted to password protect your Wifi connection for example, in regards to sharing the internet connection between, for example, between your Mac and your Ipad, you were able to go into Sharing, Internet Sharing and click on Airport options and set a password.
For the moment this appears to be absent.
Instead, you now have to click on Wi-fi options and what now appears is something along the lines of asking to input a ASCII/HEX password.
At first this seems puzzling and at first, I reinstalled Snow Leopard due to this obvious ommision in regards to the previous method, and like everybody else has said, Internet Sharing worked perefectly well in Snow Leopard.
However, I decided to install Lion once again and try to figure out a solution and as such, I came across this website

What the above website allows you to do is get a WEP key, which can be used in the Wi-fi options settings within Internet Sharing.
You simply click on the middle option on the webpage (which I did), to select 128bit key and copy and paste the HEX key, which appears under the section marked Generated Keys, into the password input section of Wi-fi options
This is where another problem arises. If you are sharing the internet connection between your Mac and your Ipad for example, the following steps need to be taken in order for this connection sharing to work
1.When you boot up your Mac, go to System Prefrences, Sharing, untick and tick the Internet Sharing checkbox and click Start on the dialog that appears.
2.Now on your Ipad, go to the Wi-fi tab, find your wireless network and click on the arrow next to it, click on Forget this network, go back to the Wi-fi screen again and tap on your Wi-fi network once again. It will now ask for your password. TYPE IN THE KEY. The connection between the Mac and the Ipad is established.
THE ABOVE STEPS WILL NEED TO BE DONE IF YOU TURN YOUR MAC OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AGAIN.
As I've said previously, this should be a good temporary solution until Apple comes out with an update that can solve this issue

Had the same problem (random WiFi disconnects), but AppleCare solved it.
Delete Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.
You'll have to reconnect WiFi, but pswd etc should still be there.

WEP Password not being accepted

As someone is hopping onto my network I set up a WEP Password on my wireless router.
My macbookpro running 10.5.3 joins the network with no problem when asked for the passport, as does my ipod touch but my iMac with 10.4.11 just comes back with "there was an error connecting to the network".
Any ideas?

Well I've found the answer myself after stumbling around so will leave what I found here for posterity and in case anyone else finds the same problem.
On all my devices it just asked for the WEP Password which I entered (a five letter word) and it was accepted.
On the imac that didn't work, until I tried the WEP 40/128-bit ASCII option - which I imagined couldn't work, yet it DID!
What I saw as the the password was converted into hex - PLUS it included a $ at the start, something that I never saw in any of the various manuals or literature that came with any connected item.
So now I'm only left with whatever issues arrive when I get a wireless connection for my xBox 360…
