WEP/WPA on the fly switching strangeness

I'm using WPA encryption on my MacBook currently, but I have a Nintendo DS which doesn't support this format. So, when I want to take my DS online, I have to switch my router to use WEP encryption for that duration.
As I want to continue being able to browse the web on my MacBook while I'm using WEP encryption, I've set up two wireless profiles on the computer, both of which have the same SSID [Network name], but use different encryption protocols.
What I'd like is for the computer to automatically detect when I change between WEP and WPA, and use the correct profile accordingly.
Here's where the problems start.
Switching from WPA to WEP appears to be fine - I just change the settings on the router, switch Airport off and back on, and it connects (although I'd prefer if there was some way of doing it without having to switch AIrport off temporarily).
When I switch back to WPA encryption, the computer can't connect. I check my network settings, and it seems the MacBook has overwritten my WPA password with the WEP key even though they are in seperate entries in the network access list. I then have to retype my WPA password in to get it to work.
Is there some way to stop the computer from doing this?

I would suggest that you use different network names for the different encryption methods. Then the correct password will be applied in each case.

  • WEP-WPA at the same time in WLAN Controllers

    Hello
I'm about to migrate a wireless security method that is based in LEAP+WEP to PEAP+WPA, but the main challange is to make transparent the migration process to the end-users. Actually we have 1200 Series APs working in Autonomous mode. I know these APs can be configured to work with WEP and WPA at the same time. But I wish to use WLAN Controllers, is it posible to have WEP and WPA at the same time with the same SSID working with LWAPP?

From what I have found out, WPA works by itself, no other protocol is used. Leap OTOH uses WEP and username Password. Peap uses a CA and WEP. What you are trying to do is either or, you would need top Vlan and run two SSIDs for that authentication. If you are looking to secure it using a Certificate server, then just use PEAP, forget the WPA, of course that limits you to what Client cards can be used. For the most security with a multitude of cards, WPA-PSK is what to use, most cards sold in the past 18 months should be WPA capable, but not all are Cisco Compatible.

  • WEP & WPA on single SSID

How can I configure a SSID that able to support WEP & WPA on the WLAN controller? The reason I ask because we are currently have LEAP/WEP and we want to move forward to PEAP/WPA. I have to use the same SSID with 2 type of encryption to support the transition.
    Thanks,

Yes. WEP and WPA is allowed on the same SSID as long as you are at 4.0.206 or later. You can do this by creating two WLANs on the same controller.
The controllers will allow each WLAN to have the same SSID *only* as long as they effect a different encryption security policy.
    Documented here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/cont402060rn.html#wp171887
Here is an example (using the text commands since I can't post inline screen caps) I run where I do dynamic WEP along with WPA both using radius. When using radius, you can select any of supported EAP types for both the WEP and WPA WLANs.
    wlan create 1 MYSSID MYSSID-wep
! create WLAN 1 ssid "MYSSID"
    wlan create 2 MYSSID MYSSID-WPA
! create WLAN 2 ssid "MYSSID"
    wlan interface 1 vlan86
    wlan interface 2 vlan86
Map them to the same interface. You can map them different ones.
    wlan session-timeout 1 1800
    wlan session-timeout 2 28800
Set up radius re-auth session timeout. Make WEP with 802.1x shorter. if using static WEP (very very insecure), don't do this.
    wlan security 802.1X enable 1
We enable 802.1x on our WEP SSID
    wlan radius_server auth add 1 1
    wlan radius_server auth add 1 2
    wlan radius_server auth add 2 1
    wlan radius_server auth add 2 2
    wlan radius_server auth add 2 3
Assign the 2 wlans to their respective radius servers - primary and backup
    wlan security wpa disable 1
disable wpa on the wep only wlan
wlan security wpa wpa1 enable 2
wlan security wpa wpa1 ciphers tkip enable 2
    add wpa1-tkip to wlan 2

Is there any way to switch between the following mission control preference "group windows by application" on the fly?  I would like to turn this feature on and off quickly. OR have both readily available?
If osx 10.9 does not support this, does any one know if automater can be used to creat a short cut to turn this preferance on and off?
Current solution (not much of a solution)
I currently added the preferance control icon for mission control on my dock.

Do you mean the general System Preferences icon? ...If so, it's possible to put the icon specifically for the Mission Control pane in the Dock:
I'm on Mountain Lion and that Preference Pane is in: Macintosh HD > System (not Users) > Library > PreferencePanes > Expose.prefPane
...Drag that Expose.prefPane to the right-hand side of the Dock, say, next to the Trash. Then you can simply click on the resulting Expose Prefs icon in the Dock to open its Prefs panel.

  • Switching BW authorization concept back and forth on the fly

After upgrading to BW 7.0, we are currently developing the BW authorizations from scratch with the new analytical authorizations. The system is currently set to the legacy RSR authorization objects. The idea is now to define two timeframes on our development system, one for the users working with old authorizations, and a second timeframe for testing the new analytical authorizations.
Can we switch the authorization concept back and forth on the fly, or are there any obstacles?
    Thanks in advance!

    Andreas,
The latest version of BW is 7.3 which is also Analysis authorization concept like 7.0. So please clarify from the system status what level are you upgrading to.
Under 7.0, the RSR objects were still available i.e. you can switch the concept back and forth on the fly, it will trigger a transport. AFAIK - In 7.3 however there is no support for RSR anymore in fact even the object class is not visible and so does the switch for the concept and even RSR objects (Z-objects) do not show up in PFCG either.
So if you are moving to 7.0 switch is possible, 7.3 it is not. But in either case, you should be upgrading using a dual landscape with upgrade work being done & tested in separate boxes than daily production support landscape. It will come in handy at the time of testing also.

  • I have an i pad 2 and for some reason the wifi switch wont pass to on

just recently the wifi switch on my i pad 2 has stopped working. i have re set all settings wipped the whole i pad and still not working can any body help me out.
or has anyone had a similar situation i realy miss the i pad

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • How to change the frequency of pulse train on the fly using an array of values?

    Hi all!
First I want to thank U for the great job you are doing for this forum.
Iam still busy trying to control a stepper motor, by sending pulses from my E-series 6024 to a compumotor s6- stepper Driver. I've managed to get it working. I desperately need to control the motor using the values from an array. I believe we can use two approaches for that:
1st - I can get an array of the "numbers of pulses". Each element must run for 10 milliseconds. Using that we can calculate the array of frequencies to send the number of pulses within 10 milliseconds for each specific element. Could we use the arrays of "number of pulses" and frequencies in a "finite pulse train " and up
date with each element every 10 millisecond?
2nd - Or Could we use of the frequency array in a "continuous pulse train vi" and update it every 10 milliseconds?
Please note that I must use the values as they are.
Can someone please built a good example for me? Your help will be appreciated.
    Regards
    Chris

    Tiano,
I will try to better explain the paragraph on LabVIEW. The original paragraph reads ...
"While in a loop for continuous pulse train generation, make two calls to Counter Set Attribute.vi to set the values for "pulse spec 1" (constant 14) and "pulse spec 2" (constant 15). Following these calls you would make a call to Counter Control.vi with the control code set to "switch cycle" (constant 7). The attached LabVIEW programs demonstrate this flow."
You can make two calls to Counter Set Attribute or you can make a call to Set Pulse Specs which, if you open this VI, you will see that it is just making two calls to Counter Set Attribute. What you are doing with the Counter Set Attribute VIs is setting two registers called "pulse s
pec 1" and "pulse spec 2". These two registers are used to configure the frequency and duty cycle of your output frequency.
The example program which is attached to this Knowledge Base demonstrates how to change the frequency of a continuous generation on the fly. Why continuous? Because changing the frequency of a finite train would be easy. When the train completes it's finite generation you would just change the frequency and run a finite train again. You would not care about the time delay due to reconfiguration of the counter.
If you would like to change the frequency of the pulse train using a knob, this functionality will have to be added in the while loop. The while loop will be continuously checking for the new value of the knob and using the knob value to set the pulse specs.
LabVIEW is a language, and as with learning all new languages (spoken or programatic) there is a lot of learning to be accomplished. The great thing is that LabVIEW is much easier than mo
st languages and the learning curve should be much smaller. Don't fret, you'll be an expert before you know it. Especially since you're tackling a challenging first project.

    Justin Britten

  • Please create "on-the-fly change search engine" option ALSO for when we mark [word] in a text, then right-click, then choose "Search [engine x] for [word]"?

In Firefox 34, you have changed the search bar.
The new style is perfect for those who always starts by typing in, letter for letter, the search term.
People such as myself, we almost never type in the search term,
but instead we mark a [word] in a text, right-click this marked [word], then select "Search [engine x] for [word]".
Speaking for myself, I have now a total of 36 search engine providers, but I usually only use 7 of those.
I use "Wikipedia (English)" most of the time..
    - but then I will switch to e.g. "AniDB" and use that one for 1 hour..
    - or switch to "Google" and use that one for 30 minutes..
    - or switch to "Wikipedia (Norwegian)" and use that one for 2 hours..
    - or switch to "Wiktionary (English)" and use that one for 15 minutes..
..and then I will switch back to "Wikipedia (English)" again.
The way the search bar was in Firefox 33 and earlier, I could very easily switch the default search engine.
Just one click to open the drop-down menu, then choose one.
In Firefox 34, I have to choose "Tools" -> "Options", the "Search" tab..
    - before I can THEN click to open the drop-down menu.
4 clicks instead of 1, that's like 400% more work..!
Also, the fact that I have to go into "Options".. make this..
..I don't know how to put it, it's a kind of psychological barrier that I have to overcome each time.
I mean, before Firefox 34, I went to the "Options" window like maybe 4 times each YEAR,
now, I have to go there 4 times each DAY..!
I am not saying you should revert to the old style Search bar,
as I feel that those you are typing search terms are indeed very happy for this new style..
Instead, I think of 2 possible ways to create happiness also for us that do mark text and choose "Search.."
    1) An "on-the-fly change search engine" option ALSO for when we mark [word] in a text, then right-click, then choose "Search [engine x] for [word]".
This could work as a cascading menu option, where it says..
Search for [word] in -> [engine x]
..and where [engine x] was the current default engine, and all the other engines was listed underneath,
just like the drop-down menu when you switch the default engine.
Additionally, you could have an on / off checkbox in the "Options" "Search" tab, where you had this option:
"Change default search engine when choosing another from the drop-down menu"
THIS would actually be PERFECT.. It would be even much BETTER than in Firefox 33 and earlier..! :-)
    2) If there are things with the first option that don't work (something I've missed etc),
then maybe you could have an on / off checkbox in the "Options" "Search" tab, where you had this option:
    "Use old-style search bar"
This would be off by default, but when switched on, it would give us the old Firefox 33 style Search bar.

Strongly recommend Context Search extension which will solve your problem

  • SUM function for a column made 'on the fly'

I have access to a database, however only SELECT statements can be run on the database. Basically the database lists switches, these switches can have up to 20 computers connected to them but some do not. I need to know the switches which contail less than 20 computers so I know where there is space for more computers (I've wrote the code for this already). I also need something to keep a tally/total for the number of spare spaces left so I can run the script and go 'ok we have a total of 20 spare places for computers theres 10 on this switch and 10 on this one'.
I just need to get the sum funtion working for the column that I've created 'on the fly', the column revealing the number of spare slots, heres the code I've got so far:
SELECT switch, COUNT(*) as "Servers", 20 - COUNT(*) as "Spare slots"
    from dedicated_servers
    where switch like 'rs%'
    GROUP by switch
    HAVING COUNT(switch) < 20
    order by Servers;
    Which gives the following:
    | switch | Servers | Spare slots |
    | rsj14-1.dc | 12 | 8 |
    | rsj12-1.dc | 15 | 5 |
    | rsi2-2.dc | 16 | 4 |
    | rsj13-1.dc | 16 | 4 |
    | rsi2-1.dc | 16 | 4 |
Just need something at the end saying TOTAL=25

OK I'll have to make em up though, but they are something like this for one switch:
    INSERT INTO dedicated_servers (switch, server_number, switch_socket)
    VALUES (rsj-1.dc, 100, 18)
On switch rsj-1.dc there can be upto 20 servers (the server_number is the primary key)

Choose the strongest security available on your router, preferably WPA2 using AES encryption and a long complex passphrase with at least 14 characters (the maximum is 63 characters).

  • Administrative credentials when adding a WEP/WPA/WPA2 Enterprise wifi profile?

    Hello,
Why do users need to provide administrative credentials when they install a configuration profile containing installation of a WEP Enterprise or WPA/WPA2 Enterprise Wifi-profile? This is not the case when installing a Wifi-profile usning standad WEP, WPA or WPA2.
Is this a bug? It confuses users with user profiles when they need to confirm the installation with administrative credentials.

  • 10.4.9 Killed my WEP/WPA abilities

Just updated to 10.4.9 on my Core 2 Duo black Macbook, and I can no longer connect to my home network via WEP or WPA. If I remove all encryption from the network, then 10.4.9 will work. The network is ok, because my Powerbook running Panther continues to work fine, whether the network is WEP or WPA.
My router is a D-Link DI-624, but the MacBook worked fine with it before the update.
Anyone else seeing anything like this? I need WEP/WPA access on my MacBook.

Jay, I just upgraded and see exactly the same behavior on my MBP 17. It would appear its not WPA that is the problem but rather that the Airport Network password item in the KeyChain cannot be accessed and its an outright frigging bug that should have been caught in testing. Try this:
Open Keychain access and find the entry in the System chain. Open it and check the box to show the password. Enter your keychain master password and you'll get an error accessing the password. Change to the access control pane and you'll be asked for the keychain password. It is accepted and works, but if you go back to the Attributes pane you get the same error for the show password value when you check the box on the Attributes pane.. pane.
FWIW I checked the disk and permissions before installing the update AND I ran first aid on the keychain, trying to avoid EXACTLY this problem. I saw similar though more easily fixable problems upgrading to 10.4.7 and 10.4.8. I hate doing Mac upgrades you can gaurantee SOMETHING will break! Look like a trip to the genius bar tomorrow!
My Access point is a DI-624 like yours and other system can aceess it just fine so its NOT the AP, its the software.
