WEP, WPA, VPN

First I should say that I am technologically challenged.
I would like to be able to log onto my computer from anywhere. The sharing options are on, but I'm concerned about security. I don't have any encryption running & I'm sure that users are piggybacking off my connection.
Is there some kind of article or knowledge-base document I can refer to? I;m sure that this would entail a lengthy response so I'd rather save you some time & do as much research as possible.
As always, many thanks.

WEP is pretty easy/common to break these days, adding almost no protection. WPA2 is best I think, VPN should be safe also.

    Thanks for your help!

Choose the strongest security available on your router, preferably WPA2 using AES encryption and a long complex passphrase with at least 14 characters (the maximum is 63 characters).

On an additional note, I've purchased a wireless router and everything connected on the first attempt.  It just vexes me that the built-in wireless isn't working as a router.  Is this another example of "Mac only plays with Mac"?

  • Administrative credentials when adding a WEP/WPA/WPA2 Enterprise wifi profile?

    Hello,
Why do users need to provide administrative credentials when they install a configuration profile containing installation of a WEP Enterprise or WPA/WPA2 Enterprise Wifi-profile? This is not the case when installing a Wifi-profile usning standad WEP, WPA or WPA2.
Is this a bug? It confuses users with user profiles when they need to confirm the installation with administrative credentials.

I don't know the answer to your question. Maybe you can find something here:

  • 10.4.9 Killed my WEP/WPA abilities

Just updated to 10.4.9 on my Core 2 Duo black Macbook, and I can no longer connect to my home network via WEP or WPA. If I remove all encryption from the network, then 10.4.9 will work. The network is ok, because my Powerbook running Panther continues to work fine, whether the network is WEP or WPA.
My router is a D-Link DI-624, but the MacBook worked fine with it before the update.
Anyone else seeing anything like this? I need WEP/WPA access on my MacBook.

Jay, I just upgraded and see exactly the same behavior on my MBP 17. It would appear its not WPA that is the problem but rather that the Airport Network password item in the KeyChain cannot be accessed and its an outright frigging bug that should have been caught in testing. Try this:
Open Keychain access and find the entry in the System chain. Open it and check the box to show the password. Enter your keychain master password and you'll get an error accessing the password. Change to the access control pane and you'll be asked for the keychain password. It is accepted and works, but if you go back to the Attributes pane you get the same error for the show password value when you check the box on the Attributes pane.. pane.
FWIW I checked the disk and permissions before installing the update AND I ran first aid on the keychain, trying to avoid EXACTLY this problem. I saw similar though more easily fixable problems upgrading to 10.4.7 and 10.4.8. I hate doing Mac upgrades you can gaurantee SOMETHING will break! Look like a trip to the genius bar tomorrow!
My Access point is a DI-624 like yours and other system can aceess it just fine so its NOT the AP, its the software.

  • WEP & WPA on single SSID

How can I configure a SSID that able to support WEP & WPA on the WLAN controller? The reason I ask because we are currently have LEAP/WEP and we want to move forward to PEAP/WPA. I have to use the same SSID with 2 type of encryption to support the transition.
    Thanks,

Yes. WEP and WPA is allowed on the same SSID as long as you are at 4.0.206 or later. You can do this by creating two WLANs on the same controller.
The controllers will allow each WLAN to have the same SSID *only* as long as they effect a different encryption security policy.
    Documented here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/cont402060rn.html#wp171887
Here is an example (using the text commands since I can't post inline screen caps) I run where I do dynamic WEP along with WPA both using radius. When using radius, you can select any of supported EAP types for both the WEP and WPA WLANs.
    wlan create 1 MYSSID MYSSID-wep
! create WLAN 1 ssid "MYSSID"
    wlan create 2 MYSSID MYSSID-WPA
! create WLAN 2 ssid "MYSSID"
    wlan interface 1 vlan86
    wlan interface 2 vlan86
Map them to the same interface. You can map them different ones.
    wlan session-timeout 1 1800
    wlan session-timeout 2 28800
Set up radius re-auth session timeout. Make WEP with 802.1x shorter. if using static WEP (very very insecure), don't do this.
    wlan security 802.1X enable 1
We enable 802.1x on our WEP SSID
    wlan radius_server auth add 1 1
    wlan radius_server auth add 1 2
    wlan radius_server auth add 2 1
    wlan radius_server auth add 2 2
    wlan radius_server auth add 2 3
Assign the 2 wlans to their respective radius servers - primary and backup
    wlan security wpa disable 1
disable wpa on the wep only wlan
wlan security wpa wpa1 enable 2
wlan security wpa wpa1 ciphers tkip enable 2
    add wpa1-tkip to wlan 2

  • Difference between WEP, WPA, and WPA2 and better suggestion to use for shared family users

What is the difference between WEP, WPA, and WPA2? My router is set up on my family PC and connected to a modem so I access Wi-fi through my laptop and my sister has a laptop too and uses our family network to get internet. I just set up a WPA today, so will we all be able to get internet (along with my family using the pc, and my sis on her laptop, even at the same time) protected? (like nobody else using our network)

Wired Equivalent Privacy, commonly called WEP is 802.11's first hardware form of security where both the WAP and the user are configured with an encryption key of either 64 bits or 128 bits in HEX. So when the user attempts to authenticate, the AP issues a random challenge. The user then returns the challenge, encrypted with the key. The AP decrypts this challenge and if it matches the original the client is authenticated. The problem with WEP is that the key is static, which means with a little time and the right tool a hacker could use reverse-engineering to derive the encryption key. It is important to note that this process does affect the transmission speed.
WPA builds upon WEP, making it more secure by adding extra security algorithms and mechanisms to fight intrusion.
WiFi Protected Access (WPA) is the new security standard adopted by the WiFi Alliance consortium. WiFi compliance ensures interoperability between different manufacturer’s equipment.WPA delivers a level of security way beyond anything that WEP can offer, bridges the gap between WEP and 802.11i networks, and has the advantage that the firmware in older equipment may be upgradeable.
WPA2 is based upon the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) 802.11i amendment to the 802.11 standard, which was ratified on July 29, 2004. The primary difference between WPA and WPA2 is that WPA2 uses a more advanced encryption technique called AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), allowing for compliance with FIPS140-2 government security requirements.

  • Problem with radius and wep/wpa

    Hi
    I have problem with wrv200 (1.0.38) +freeradius (2.0.5) +wpc54g v3.1 with wxp with patch to use wpa/wpa2
I think that authentication in my radius pass correct but there is some problem with wpa mode or wpa compatibility
In my wrv200 I try mode: wpa-enterprise, wpa2-enterprise, wpa2 enterpise-mix and radius. In my wirless card a try: wpa and wpa2 my
    freeradius.conf:
    andy Auth-Type := Accept, User-Password == "andy"
    and log from radius:
rad_check_password: Auth-Type = Accept, accepting the user Login OK: [andy] (from client wrv200 port 0 cli 00-18-F8-aa-aa-aa)
    Sending Access-Accept of id 4 to 10.0.0.6 port 1026
my wrv200 still send to syslog:
    klogd: @ = Add Host : [00:18:f8:aa:aa:aa] VID 9 LinkID 1 PortNumber 6 klogd: @ = Add Host : [00:18:f8:aa:aa:aa] VID 9 LinkID 1 PortNumber 6
    klogd: @ = Add Host : [00:18:f8:aa:aa:aa] VID 9 LinkID 1 PortNumber 6
and i never connect to network and i must still (every 30s) type login and password to authenticate When i use only wep, without radius,it's works
I have dwl900ap+ from dlink and when I use radius + wep 64bit everything works
    i don't have any idea
    thanks for any help

Hey try disabling the security & try connecting to the network if it works fine, if not i mean if you want to connect using the secured network then would suggest you to upgrade the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable
to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug
in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!

I'm trying to set up my PC lap top to connect to my airport extreme. It wants my WEP or WPA #.
How do I find those numbers.

It may be asking for your network "key"
You can find this as follows:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station menu item at the top of the screen to the right of the Apple icon
Click Equivalent Network Password and your "key" will be displayed

  • IMac G5 Airport Extreme Card WEP/WPA Security connection Problem

I have an iMac G5 (non Intel) and a wireless Belkin 801.g MIMO router. When I have no security setup on the router (ie straight out of the box)then the Airport Express card connects to the network without problems. As soon as I set either WEP or WPA or WPA2 security on the router and input the correct settings in the Airport configuration in system preferences the card sees the Network but will not connect. I simply get the message "error connecting to network". I have a Windows based laptop with built in wireless card and this has no problems at all connecting to the secured network, whether it is WEP or WPA or WPA2. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas please?

I have the same problem with my new black MacBook and a Netgear router. I can connect to the 'free' networks all around me, my Airport Extreme card sees the wi-fi network in my home that I want to connect to, and my old iBook with its lowly Airport card connected (and still does) with no problem using the '40-bit hex' option when entering the password. But now all of a sudden there are just 'errors' when I try to connect (having tried all the various options, and two different types of passwords or keys as provided by the network administrator). Oh yeah, and of course Apple Support won't help because they don't want to know about problems relating to third-party technology... We can't be the only ones with this problem!

  • WEP-WPA at the same time in WLAN Controllers

    Hello
I'm about to migrate a wireless security method that is based in LEAP+WEP to PEAP+WPA, but the main challange is to make transparent the migration process to the end-users. Actually we have 1200 Series APs working in Autonomous mode. I know these APs can be configured to work with WEP and WPA at the same time. But I wish to use WLAN Controllers, is it posible to have WEP and WPA at the same time with the same SSID working with LWAPP?

From what I have found out, WPA works by itself, no other protocol is used. Leap OTOH uses WEP and username Password. Peap uses a CA and WEP. What you are trying to do is either or, you would need top Vlan and run two SSIDs for that authentication. If you are looking to secure it using a Certificate server, then just use PEAP, forget the WPA, of course that limits you to what Client cards can be used. For the most security with a multitude of cards, WPA-PSK is what to use, most cards sold in the past 18 months should be WPA capable, but not all are Cisco Compatible.

  • Two networks wep - wpa

I'll like to stream my music and other stuff wirelessly but I don't need or want to asscess the internet using wep. The question -- is there a system or process to set up two networks one with wep to listen to itunes then one with wpa to access the internet ....
    thank you all
    powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I know I'm not very clear. What I'd like to do if
use wpa encription. I understand that wep is not as
strong as wpa. I understand that you can only use
    wep for streaming itunes.
That is incorrect, using WPA on a wireless network will still allow you to stream AirTunes via a connected Airport Express base station in client mode (or even if using WDS).

  • WEP/WPA on the fly switching strangeness

I'm using WPA encryption on my MacBook currently, but I have a Nintendo DS which doesn't support this format. So, when I want to take my DS online, I have to switch my router to use WEP encryption for that duration.
As I want to continue being able to browse the web on my MacBook while I'm using WEP encryption, I've set up two wireless profiles on the computer, both of which have the same SSID [Network name], but use different encryption protocols.
What I'd like is for the computer to automatically detect when I change between WEP and WPA, and use the correct profile accordingly.
    Here's where the problems start.
Switching from WPA to WEP appears to be fine - I just change the settings on the router, switch Airport off and back on, and it connects (although I'd prefer if there was some way of doing it without having to switch AIrport off temporarily).
When I switch back to WPA encryption, the computer can't connect. I check my network settings, and it seems the MacBook has overwritten my WPA password with the WEP key even though they are in seperate entries in the network access list. I then have to retype my WPA password in to get it to work.
Is there some way to stop the computer from doing this?

I would suggest that you use different network names for the different encryption methods. Then the correct password will be applied in each case.

  • WEP & WPA networking issues

    Hello...
Well, I'm really chasing my tail here.
I've got a mixed wireless network at home centered around an airport extreme base station. I've chosen "WPA2 personal security." I have 3 computers with airport extreme cards that work just fine with this, but I have two older imac 800s with original airport cards (firmware 9.5.2) & running Tiger 10.4.11. They cannot log onto this network cuz WPA isn't an option on the pulldown. I did an online search and came upon this page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2594?viewlocale=en_US
Which leads me to believe it is POSSIBLE for an original airport to join a WPA network.....but it falls pretty short in terms of telling me exactly how to pull this off.
    Would appreciate some help.
    Thanks.

Tim, a simple way to test would be to change the router to WEP, then setup the Mac with that and the password and make sure you can connect. If it works, then you can reset the other equipment accordingly.
While I do not advocate use of WEP because of its weaknesses, that would get you going for the short term. Meanwhile, search the AirPort software download to find the latest that will work with your OS and card. If that is installed, make a copy of what you now have for backup if needed, and you can then go to WPA you can raise the security level of your network. But always make a copy of the appropriate software that is working before replacement...can never have too many backup copies.
