Welcome to Apple Discussions!
By the sounds of it, you erase and installed Mac OS X:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
Typically erasing is not needed, and in the future to avoid this complication, Upgrade or Archive and install Mac OS X if your system otherwise functions normally. Your PowerMac G5 restore DVD that came with your PowerMac has the Classic environment installer.
One of these three sets of instructions matches up with that installer:

  • Mac OS9 Classic

I recently upgraded to MAC OS X 10.4.6. Since the upgrade i haven't been able to open up Outlook Express to view my email. I get the message MAC OS 9 Classic cannot find a System Folder on your startup disk to use. It says about re-loading MAC OS 9.1 or greater. Not sure what to do and what CD to use. Thanks, Mike B.

I think the real question here is, why are you using Outlook Express for OS 9 when you could be using the excellent Mail application that comes with OS X?
But let's get back to your question. I am interested to know what you upgraded to 10.4.6 FROM. Did you install OS X directly over OS 9, or was OS X already on there and you just ran the Software Update function? If you just ran Software Update, that shouldn't have done anything to your Classic (OS 9) installation.
If your OS X install is a brand new install, were you previously using OS 9? If so, was it 9.2.2? It has to be 9.2.2 to be run in Classic mode under OS X. Try this: open System Preferences and select Startup Disk. Give it a moment to refresh, and see if one of the startup options is OS 9. If so, then the system folder is still available and just needs to be updated. If not, then it got moved or deleted somehow.
Be sure to respond with what you found out; I may have more ideas for you.

  • Using Tiger and Mac OS9 (Classic)

I just got an old Powerbook G4 off eBay so I can run Classic. I miss Bugdom so much!!
Problem is it has no OS installed, so I installed my old copy of Tiger on it and updated to 10.4.11.
How can I install OS 9 on it? I have CDs of 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2.1 but it won't start from any of them. I read somewhere that the older Powerbooks will only start up from the original restore CDs that were supplied with them, and needless to say I do not have them.
I am not certain of the exact vintage and model, but it is a G4, 1GHz, 64Mb Video RAM 15" display with gigabit ethernet.
If anyone can offer some advice I would be very grateful.

All I have is a CD with 9.2.2 on as a barebones system with various utilities. I tried the drag and drop method but it didn't work well enough to run much. It started OK, but it would allow me to run ant 3rd party programs I tried, including Bugdom and Tome Viewer. Unfortunately I don't have another non-Intel Mac.

  • Mac Os Classic on MacBookPro?

On my older laptop, which ran on an earlier version of Mac Os X, there was a way of running both X and classic at the same time. Does the 10.4.10 installed on my computer come with similar capabilities, and if so, how do I make Classic run? If it doesn't come with those capabilities, is there a download somewhere that would let me get a version of mac os 9 as a supplement to what I already have?
I ask, because I'm specifically trying to run an old CD Rom game (Myst) and my computer doesn't seem to have the system requirements to run it, and I'm assuming it's because it relies on an older system of MacOs. It runs on the other computer, with 10.2.x with classic running.
What should I do? Where can I go?

The only way I know of to run OS 9 on an Intel Mac is using the free third party app, Sheep Shaver. For that, you'll need to provide your own PPC ROM image and OS 9 installation disk though.

  • Mac os classic desktop app will not load

it will open and i will get the box welcome to mac os 9
and it doesn not move from the prosees bar
    how do i fix this

Boot with extensions off.    Use the Classic System Preference panel to determine what extensions are loaded.  I believe you can set this through the Advanced panel.   The Shift key forces Classic to boot without extensions.

  • Mac Pro Classic, Snow Leopard, and 64 bit kernel

Hello, and thanks in advance for your thoughts and your help. A question was brought up on the macrumors forums about the shortcomings of the 2006 mac pro. Basically someone said that he would not get a used 2006 mac pro because "it can't boot into Leopard in 64-bit." I asked him what he meant and he said that he didn't think it was "true" 64 bit because in his system info it says "64 bit kernel and extensions - no". I poked around a little bit and found a good article:
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/10/28/roadto_mac_os_x_snow_leopard_64_bit_to_thekernel.html
detailing that Leopard runs on a 32 bit kernel, mainly because every extension must be 64 bit in order to run on a 64 bit kernel, and that Leopard can run 64 bit applications even though it runs on a 32 bit kernel. The article states that Snow Leopard will be the first operating system on a 64 bit kernel.
Now, my question. Since my Mac Pro runs on 32 bit EFI instead of the new EFI 64, will I be able to have a similar 64 bit Snow Leopard experience? Will my EFI on my antique mac pro really limit the 64 bit Snow Leopard experience? Will my aluminum macbook be able to "do" more with snow leopard than my mac pro? and lastly, I am currently running the Radeon 4870 in my mac pro, since the guys at ATI snuck the 32 bit EFI onto the card as well as the 64 bit EFI, somehow. I wonder what's going to happen with all this when Snow Leopard drops.

I think part of the confusion is that the original Mac Pro does not enable 64 bit under Boot Camp. If you look at:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/stats/mac-pro-quad-2.66-specs.html
The original Mac Pro is 64 bit in every way. Regular Leopard is not in the Finder. So there is still a chance you may get 64 bit processing on Snow Leopard even with the original Mac Pro.
    From the above link:
Each of two Xeon 5150 "Woodcrest" Dual-Core processors have two independent processor "cores" with 4 MB of level 2 cache per processor. It also features a 128-bit SSE vector engine, 64-bit data paths and registers. Also offered, via custom configuration, were two 2 GHz Dual Core Xeon 5130 processors for US$300 less, two 3 GHz Dual Core Xeon 5160 processors for US$800 more, and starting April 4, 2007, two 3 GHz Quad Core Xeon X5365 (Clovertown) processors for US$1500 more.
I would not rely on AppleInsider as a resource. It is a rumor site.

  • Been using Macs since classic. Using MBP, OS 10.7.5. Trying to figure out how to print/save folder contents (Name, Date Modified, Size Kind) of entire (non-visible) folder? Any apps that can do this?

Been using Macs since before classic. Using MBP, OS 10.7.5. Trying to figure out how to print/save folder contents including what's not visible on screen (Name, Date Modified, Size Kind) in entire folder?
Screen shots are getting old hat.
Tried select all, copy, paste into pages, but it didn't display date modified, size & kind, and also included images of selected files, which is too large.
Any apps/shortcuts/utilities that can do this?  Thanks in advance.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • Mac G5 ***** - Classic OS9 System Support won't load despite best efforts

Very Frustrated PC user - trying to switch to Mac. I have G5 iMac with OS 10.4.3. I am simply trying to install my wife's new Casio digital camera software which needs Classic to work.
What the F? Every PC known to man is backwards compatible; why not the "easiest computer in the world," aka Mac?
So, I have the installer disc for OS9 System Support and everytime I try to install it, it stops in the middle and reads "The application Installer quit unexpectedly."
    Any suggestions?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I'd like to add to the woes. Last summer I purchased
a G5 tower (on eBay) that had 10.3 on it. I needed to
transfer my data, older applications, and System
folder from my B/W G3 (400 MHz) over to the G5 in a
Classic folder. One of the forums here said to use an
Ethernet cable to make the transfer. The good news:
my data from the old computer transferred.
That was the good news. The bad news: even though I
transferred it, I actually created two different
Classic folders. Now, it will only open one of them.
And, in addition, each time Classic attempts to
mount, I get an error message:
"The system software on the startup disk only
functions on the original media, not if copied to
    another drive."
You get that error message if you copy the System Folder from the system CD onto a hard drive. The System Folder on a CD contains a special version of the System file which will not work on a hard drive. You should delete that System Folder forthwith.
So, I guess I have several questions:
    1) May I delete the two folders that have Classic in
    them?
Just kill the one copied from the CD.
    2) If so, how may I do so safely?
put the System file somewhere else, put the System Folder into the Trash, reboot, empty the Trash, put the System file into the Trash, empty the Trash.
    3) Since I still need Classic for some applications
(that I'm too poor/cheap to spend the money to
upgrade), and since the disks I received with the
computer didn't have Classic on them at all,
If you got the original system discs, you got a disc which has Classic. There will be an alias specifically set to install Classic.
    what is
the best way to get Classic installed on this
    machine?
May I also introduce an unrelated problem? This G5
tower, as purchased, was partitioned. It has a system
partition and a regular partition. Is there a way for
me to have no partitions without wiping the drive
    clean first?
No. When you repartition it you kill the current partitions.
    Many thanks!!!

  • Mac OS9 Classic Install Problems

Could anyone help me out here. I have a new iMac G4 OS 10.2.8
Went to install Photoshop - no luck as I need OS9 Classic - got the OS9 install disk - double click on the installer icon - get a message:
There are no localized Classic-specific resources to update the selected system folder, Power Mac G4 InstalléSystem Folder.
Donèt know what t do here - any replies would be appreciated.

You might want to check out this link below - Since I'm unclear as your system set-up, perhaps this will help. It sounds as though what you need to do is just install the 'classic environment' but you are going at it asthough you are trying to actually install OS9.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh763.html
If your drive is partitioned you could use the plain old OS9 install disks on one of your partitions - Until you are ready to bail on OS9 totally I vote for installing the 'classic environment' on your main drive, thus taking full advantage of Apple's unique OS interface.

  • Mac OS Classic Flash Player 7r70 is an OS X File

Adobe, the newest Classic Mac OS version of Flash Player
    (7r70) available from
    http://www.adobe.com/go/d9c2fe33
is an OS X package file which does not contain a Classic Mac OS
compatible Flash plugin. Please post the correct version so Classic
Mac OS users can have the security benefits of Flash Player 7r70.
    Thank you.

    Hi Darren,
Please excuse my ignorance, but I do not know what a SWF file
    is.
I saw the message from Adobe today. However, I had already
installed version 7r70 based on their earlier TechNote.
I use google.com as my homepage, but I have it set up so that
when Netscape starts up, Mail opens and my new messages start to
download. I need to click on Navigator to access Google. It does
not start up automatically. The script appears when Netscape starts
up and tries to download my new mail. I do not think that there is
any flash content when I access my email.
I am concerned that if I uninstall the Flash Player, I will
not be able to download and install a version that will function
compatibly with my old PowerBook G3 that is not capable of running
OSX without problems. I am running OS9.1, and I only have 512MB of
ram and an 8GB hard drive.
Is there a way to get rid of the script by deleting a
specific folder or file? I saw a new document titled "settings.sol"
that is dated on the day that I installed version 7r70.
Thank you so much for your help!
    Best regards,

  • Mac Color Classic Display

Hi, I have a macintosh color classic having a display issue. If I leave the system off, and the main switch on the back in the off position for a few hours and start it up it runs perfect, and can do so for well over 20 hours strait.
However, if the main switch has been on for more than a minute or so without starting up I have issues. When I finally do hit the power button on the keyboard the display is overlapping itself in the middle and almost twice as bright as the maximum allows.
I already tried opening the case and dusting out the inside with a can of compressed air. Replaced PRAM battery. Reset PRAM, all that normal stuff.
Any suggestions or tips would be nice, especially since the computer is in otherwise perfect operating condition!

I'm no expert on these but I had something similar on a Classic. It seemed to be a fault with the hard drive, I think it stalled and took current forcing the PSU into safe mode, as in the computer didn't start up. I replaced the HD and all was well.
Sometimes the computer would start and sometimes not, most odd.
I wonder as your screen is folding over, the deflection circuit has a fault which takes too much current and causes the problem. Only a guess based on what I have experienced.
