Westell 327W Network Timeout

I'm having problems setting up Apache and SSH with my Westell 327W.
I have Verizon DSL -> Westell 327W Modem/Router -> Ubuntu Server with Apache Web Server and SSH Server.
The Ubuntu Server with apache and SSH is the DMZ Host.
Apache and SSH will work good for 5-10 minutes, then when you click on a link or do anything from the apache webpage... Firefox says Connecting to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, then it will say Page Load Error. Network Timeout. The server at xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is taking too long to respond.
I putty (ssh) into the Ubuntu server, everything will work good for 5-10 minutes, then putty will freeze up and say Putty Fatal Error. Network error: Software caused connection abort.
Apache or SSH will NOT work for 1-2 minutes. Firefox will say Network Timeout and SSH will not connect at all.
Then, everything will work again for 5-10 more minutes... then go down for 1-2 minutes, over and over and over....
Where can I find help for the Westell 327W Custom Firewall Rules? I dont have a help section on my 327W and cant find any information about making my own custom firewall rules.
I've read my problem occurs because of my firewall rules. The router drops the session because it drops it out of the state table or something like that?!?!?!? But I thought setting a PC as the DMZ host would put it outside of the firewall and the firewall rules wouldnt apply to the DMZ host?!?!?!?
PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

Ok, I thought so.
#1 In you are using GNOME, go to System >> Admininstration >> Networking.
#2 In the general tab make sure your network card is active.
#3 Select your network adapter and press properties.
#4 Make sure your network card is enabled.
#5 Change the configuration from DHCP to static (OR if it is already set to static)...
#6 For the IP Addres, you can set any number that you want to but not: 0, 1, 15 to 47 OR 255.
Such as 192.168.1.6
#7 Enter in the Subnet Mask of: 255.255.255.0
#8 Enter in the default gateway of: 192.168.1.1
#9 In the DNS Tab, enter in the DNS Servers that you want to use.
b) If you desire to, you may enter in the DNS of 192.168.1.1
c) OR the DNS Server address(es) that are in one of your router's screens. Maybe at Advanced -> DNS ?
#10 In your router, forward to the IP Address that you have setup on your computer.
This should resolve the issue. If not, in your router go to Advanced... In Advanced, if you see anything about UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) go there.
If UPnP is turned in the router, I would recommend turning that feature off.
If in Advanced you do not see anything about UPnP, please show a screen shot of the Advanced Screen...
I state my source(s) about setting a Static IP.

As to why turning off UPnP: Because it opens ports automatic in the router, and you can not have over lapping ports.

  • Westell 327W gateway does not recognize Brother network printer

The Westell 327W gateway does not recognize Brother network printer model MFC-490CW.  Any idea?

I took a look at the Brother www site and would recommend the following:
Temporarily Connect the Printer to the Network with an Ethernet Cable
Run the Brother Installer Application to reconfigure the printer for Wireless (CD That Came w/ Printer)
You will need the Network Name (SSID) and Passcode (WEP Key) from your Router.
Once configured you will be able to disconenct the Ethernet Cable and use it wireless.

  • Help. DSL drops connection all the time, is it the modem? (westell 327W)

Pardon me because I'm not so tech aware, and so don't know what to do to try to find a solution.  We lose our internet connection a lot.  It seems to happen in spurts:  last night we couldn't connect at all, today it was bad in the morning but now I've been on for about a half an hour and all seems good.  I can't figure out any pattern.  Last weekend we were fine all weekend, during the week it was bad every single day.
I connect through a desktop and the westell modem;  upstairs we connect with a laptop and wireless.  The connection problems happen in both places, although it's our housemates who connect upstairs through the wireless and so I'm not entirely sure if they have problems when we're having problems or not (this has been going on for so many months, we've all kind of adapted to it.  but it's more and more frustrating).  Our wireless is encrypted.
When we can't connect, we get the Explorer 'cannot find website because you are not connected to the internet' error page.  Even when we can't connect, the "local area connections" icon on the lower right side of the screen (Windows XP) says we have a network connection at 10.0 mbs.  The lights on the modem are all green, and the DSL light stays steady green, although sometimes the internet light will blink erratically, and the wireless light always blinks quickly.  We recently switched out the cable to the jack, so it's not that.
Sometimes we can get it to get back a connection briefly by doing one of these things (but they don't always work):
    - use the "repair" button on the local area connections window support tab -- this will often get it back for a few minutes but is rarely permanent.  When it doesn't work, it usually says it's because it can't renew the IP address
    - turn the modem on and off.  That's what worked this morning.  It did not work last night.
    - turn the computer on and off.  That worked last night only to get an initial connection that then pooped out.
    - use the verizon support popup that sometimes (and only sometimes) appears when we're having connectivity problems.  This morning that worked briefly -- the internet connection popped back up at the stage where the pop up siad "testing connection."
Any idea what is going on here?  I tried a couple months ago to get help through verizon online support, and it ended up as a 3 hour phone call to India that resolved things only for an afternoon, and not on any more long term basis, and I don't want to do that again unless I know what I'm asking for (since all they do is go through some kind of checklist).

I had similar probelm. I did find dns lookup is very slow. The following are consecutive tests:

  • I have a Westell 6100, Can i request for a Westell 327W?

When I started using Verizon High Speed internet, 2 yrs ago. They gave me a Westell Model 6100 modem in the starter kit. I recently got a laptop and also other devices that use wi-fi. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a Westell 327W modem from verizon?

I am not sure if you can request a Westell 327W. You can maybe tell them that you have Wireless, and would like a new modem combo that has built in wireless.
In the meantime as you wait for another answer...
#1 It does help to know that you can go to a store and buy a new modem combo that has wireless.
For example: If you go to http://www.circuitcity.com/ -> Computers & Office -> Networking & Internet -> Installation kits -> and then you can select the "Actiontec Wireless DSL Gateway/Starter Kit for Verizon (GT704WGV)"
This example is a modem combo that has wireless, and Verizon will support.
I am not saying that you should go to a store (online or in person), buy a modem combo with Wireless, supported by Verizon (or otherwise), or even buy that Specific router.
    Moving along....
#2 Does the 6100 modem combo have only one or at least two LAN ports?
    #3 Are you NATTED?
This means for example on Windows:
    a) Go to Start -> Run.
    b) Type in cmd
    and press enter.
    c) In the new window, called the command prompt: Type in ipconfig /all
    and press enter.
If you are not on Windows, please post and someone will help you...
#4 If the IP address found is one of the following three important ranges, you are NATTED.
    a) 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
    b) 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
    c) 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
#5 If NATTED, is there any device that is between the Westell 6100 and your computer? b) If so, what is the brand and model of it?

  • Westell 327w and Wireless Access Point

I had DSL last year, but have since changed to FIOS, which I love.  So I have the Westell 327W modem/router that isn't being used.  I have decided to use it in another project for the 4 port ethernet and the wireless capability.
As this other project, we are using another service, which isn't DSL.  However, I figured that I could use the 327w as the wireless access point.  I currently have access to the internet through the provided internet service and from there I go into a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall.  From there I run an ethernet cable to the 327w.
As long as I plug a computer into one of the 4 ethernet ports on the 327w, I'm able to ping to the Internet using either the IP address or using DNS.  I'm able to surf and everything.
I have also set up the wireless and using WPA security and I'm able to connect a laptop to the wireless.  I get the IP address via DHCP from the ASA, so I have turned off the DHCP server on the 327.  I have also turned off the firewall.  I then test connectivity and I can ping anything on the network that is assigned by the ASA, but when I try to ping to an Internet address, by the address, I get request timed out.  I also don't get anything back on DNS and so forth.
What do I need to do on the 327 to allow the wireless to work with the current connection set up.
Thanks for the help and information.

I got it to work.  What I had to do was to set up the 327w in VLAN mode so that the wireless side would send the packets out the ethernet port to the ASA or another router.
In fact, I'm writing this on the wireless setting of the 327w.  So setting the VLAN allow the wireless to send and receive packets.

  • Adding another Westell 327W, currently have D90-327W15-06. Can I use A90, B90 or C90?

I'm adding a second Westell 327W to my residence.  The first one is a D90-327W15-06 and works great.  I wanted to add another wired connection to a different part of my residence and I know I have to add a Westell 327w, but wondered if I could add the following:
    A90-327W15-06
    B90-327W15-06
    or
    C90-327W15-06
and would that work with the current DSL signal I get throughout the house?  Do  I need to only add the D90-327W15-06 version of the Westell 327W?
    Thanks

#1 You can replace a modem combo.
#2 The only way to use more than one modem combo, unless I am mistake, is to have another phone number.
#3 You can add a wireless extender or another wireless router (but setup as a Hub/Switch/Wap) if you want to extend the existing network.

  • Westell 327W Wireless Problem

My 327W is increasingly dropping the wireless signal.  There doesn't seem to be any regularity to the problem.  It happens randomly, day and night, sometimes several times a day and some days not at all.  It has been getting worse since I first noticed it.
I'm fairly certain it's the modem itself, rather than the computer(s).  I have experienced the dropout with two different laptops, a PS3, and an iPod Touch.  When the signal disappears it occurs simultaneously on each of the other devices, and the signal/network isn't visible when viewing available wireless networks on the laptops and iPod.  Typically it only lasts for a couple of minutes, and the signal will reappear and the devices will reconnect.  While the wireless signal is out, the wired connections still function properly.
Is there possibly some way to repair the 327, or would it be best to simply replace it?  What would be the most comparable replacement if I have to go that route?

#1 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router, you could put the Westell 327w into bridge mode.
The directions for that are located by following this path...
    a) http://start.verizon.net/
    b) Support
    c) Internet
    d) Home Networking
    e) Connecting a third party router.
    f) The directions for the 327w.
#2 If you do not have a RJ-45 WAN port router, then..
.. I would believe that you would want to either:
    a) get the firmware more up to date on the Westell 327w.
    b) OR get a RJ-45 WAN port router and put the Westell 327w into bridge mode.
    ^^
An example of a RJ-45 WAN port router, is the Linksys WRT54G.

  • Westell 327w compatibility

My new HP Pav G7 laptop will not connect wirelessly or through the cable to the internet using a Westell 327w modem.  Is it compatible with Windows 7?

I will try the test you mentioned. When attempting to connect wirelessly, I see my network as well as my neighbors. The computer tries to connect, but I get "Windows was unable to connect to "my SSID number. I purchased this computer new 4/15/11, so I'm getting a bit frustrated with this issue. I will try a wireless test with some relatives. After that I'm done, and the computer gets returned.

  • Resetting the Westell 327W

If I reset my Westell 327W, will I have to set up a new account profile (Account ID and Password, and VPI/VCI values)? I have my DSL through Verizon and AOL, and I do not know any information about the Verizon side so what username/password do I use? The 327W has Verizon firmware. Thanks.

VPI/VCI values with the Verizon firmware should be auto-detected upon the modem's first boot from a reset. The modem should also identify that PPPoE is used, and from that point reboot once it has configured itself. If it does not configure itself, just use the VPI/VCI settings of 0/35 respectively and that should get it talking to the network.
As for PPPoE, you may or may not need to set that up. Most areas use OpenPPPoE where any combination of Username and Password will allow you to log into the network. But if that's not the case, just enter in the credentials you use for either AOL (If it's a Verizon + AOL account which you have) or get the PPPoE Information from Verizon or the modem before factory resetting it (at least the username). Just keep in mind with the Verizon firmware on the 327w, even if the PPPoE session is up and running, you will need to disable the Walled Garden before attempting to browse. Otherwise you'll bump heads with an Activation Page.
The Walled Garden can be found at: http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm . Just turn it off by pressing the Disable Button.

  • How to replace westell 6100 with westell 327w?

    Hi all,
I am currently using a Westell 6100 and I just inherited a Westell 327W from my brother who switched over to FIOS.
Can I replace the 6100 with the 327W? And how do I go about doing that?
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers!

If the 327w has newer firmware on it, you can just factory reset it and then connect it up. Once it is online, visit http://192.168.1.1/ and use admin/password respectively as the login information. Then, set a new password for the gateway.
Once done, visit http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm and choose the disable button. Assuming the modem has been able to get a connection at this time, you should be online.

  • Network timeout only for library upgrade items

I purchased an upgrade of my library, which totals 430 songs. The purchase went through fine, but when I would try to "check for downloads" so I could download the items, I kept getting "network timeout" errors. I ran the diagnostics, and after sending a support request, I was told it was probably my third-party firewall (even though it was properly configured and I had always been able to download without a problem).
I uninstalled the firewall and related security software, and when I continued to have trouble I was advised to disable all startup items. I did that, and even disabled Windows Firewall (which also was properly configured for iTunes), and I continued to get the same result.
I re-enabled the startup items and the Windows Firewall, and, just as an experiment, I tried purchasing an album from the store. The purchase went through and the album immediately downloaded without a problem. After that, I tried again to "check for available downloads." (Incidentally, iTunes shows there are 430 downloads available.) I again got the same error.
It seems clear, at this point, that I am able to connect and download, but there is something wrong on the other end of this deal that is preventing me from downloading the music I paid for. I am getting extremely frustrated, because by now I have spent hours and hours trying to get the music I paid for.
Anyone else experience anything like this, where the "update library" purchases seem to be the only thing you can't get to?

I was finally able to have the issue bumped up to a Senior Tech, who was able to help me. According to him, some ISPs have a problem with very large downloads. Over the course of several days, we broke the library upgrade into smaller chunks, with him placing the songs into the queue.
We did have a further problem at one point where some of the "upgraded" songs were duplicates of the m4p files (rather than the unprotected files). We never figured out the problem there, but he re-placed all 430 of the upgraded songs in my download queue, and this time the whole set of 430 downloaded.
So I'm not sure why it would work that time, if it was my ISP causing the difficulty, but whatever. It only took about three weeks of work and a hundred bucks or so, but I now have the items able to be upgraded.
I have to give a big thumbs-up to the techs I finally dealt with when I took matters into my own hands and called AppleCare--going through the ExpressLane was useless and a waste of time. Notody even reads the emails--all you get are form replies telling you to do what you already say you have done.

  • Firmware Updates for Westell 327w Router?

    hi there!
just curious if Verizon ever updates the firmware for the "Westell 327w" wireless router, and if so, where to find it.)

  • Still gettting error 33162 despite increasing network timeouts

    Hi All,
I have an application that frequently displays error code 33162.  I followed the advice at http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/C4E77D7E9BECBAFE86256C6200544289 and doubled my network timeouts to 4 seconds timeout and 10 seconds initial connect timeout.  I still get the error however.  When I get the error the block diagram briefly flashes on one of the blocks, but it's too fast to really see.
Any advice on how to solve this error condition?
    Thanks,
    Sean

    Hi,
I am having the problem occur repeatedly again today.  My fieldpoint hardware is cFP-2000.  I am currently seeing repeated 33162 errors, so many that I have to stop my application.
The attached screenshot shows where the error is occuring.  We'd really appreciate any advice on this problem.  Our fieldpoint modules are located close to some heavy AC equipment, so hopefully the EM fields from this are not affecting them.
    Thanks,
    Sean
