Westell 327w router.

Dose anyone know if there is a limited number of wireless computer this router will allow to connect to your home network if you are using the allow only these MAC addresses dose 4 sound right or can I put more on the router.  Thanks for any help.

While I do not know the answer to this question, I have to tell you..
#1 Mac Address(es) are always are sent in the clear regardless of the type of encryption.
#2 Mac Address(es) can be spoffed / cloned.
#3 If someone ( an attacker) did not know how to spoof / clone a Mac Address, then everything else sent without using (already connected) encryption will be seen.
A type of already connected encryption is SSL. Most VPNs use encryption.
For these reason I do not recommend using Mac Address Filtering. I would recommend using some sort of wireless encryption. Two examples of wireless encryption are WEP and WPA...

  • Firmware Updates for Westell 327w Router?

    hi there!
just curious if Verizon ever updates the firmware for the "Westell 327w" wireless router, and if so, where to find it.)
Westell's website just says talk to Verizon about it...
no big deal, just like to keep my stuff up to date.)
    thanks!

The other users that updated the 327W to the new firmware claim that it messed it up. They recommend that you stay with your current firmware right now.

  • Updating firmware on Westell 327W router

I found a file on Verizon website to manually update the router but it did not work, says that software update failed. I still have version 03.02.01. Does anyone know how to get the latest firmware installed on this router?

Make sure you have the correct version of the firmware update being applied. There are three differnet revisions of the 327w that you could have and you can determine your version from the modem's Web GUI or from the sticker on the bottom of the router. Also when running the upgrade, shut off your Firewall and Anti-virus until it complete in case they are interfering with the upgrade.
    See this page: http://www22.verizon.com/Support/Residential/internet/highspeed/troubleshooting/network/firmwareupgr...
Verizon should already be pushing the latest version of the firmware to you but that doesn't seem to be the case (likely though if you were in bridge mode previously).

  • Can't log in to my Westell 327W router

When I go to http://192.168.1.1, the URL automatically goes to this page--  http://192.168.1.1/edit_user_settings.htm  -- and I get a screen that says "User Settings".
This page offers me the opportunity to change my USER SETTINGS.  There is a box that's shaded that says the full name of the user is Administrator; then I have 3 boxes to fill in:  User Name, password, and re-enter password.
When I enter mynew user name and password and clikc on APPLY, a box pops up asking "Are you sure you want to change the User Name and Password?"
When I click on OK, the screen clears and the same page (...edit_user_settings.htm) comes up.
What do I have to do to get past this page so I can interrogate the router?

the routIt turns out, the problem was that the router did not like the password I entered.  For the sake of simplicity (and because my wife and I are the only people using this router) the password I tried to enter was..."password".  The router clearly did not like that password, but did not tell me.  So I tried a different password and that worked.
But now I have a problem that arose when I tried to get further into the router pages.  I was able to get to this page:
         http://192.168.1.1/wireless_status.htm
but when I click on the box on the left that says "advanced security settings", that brings up yet another (different ) box asking for my user name and password.  I've tried all the combinations and I cannot get past that box.  VERY annoying.
I'm wondering what the results would be if I pushed in the RESET button on the back of the modem.  Would that reset it to its original settings, of "admin" and "password: for the uname and pword, respectively?

  • Using WRT610N router with Westell 327W modem/router on Centurytel

I have DSL with Centurytel and have a Westell 327W modem/router installed.  Can I install and use a WRT610N router with this setup to get a faster wireless connection?

Both the wireless router can work together...You need to cascade both the router.

  • Can Westell 327W DSL modem/router receive wireless signal?

I have a spare Westell 327W wired/wireless DSL modem/router. I need a wireless access point for a G4 Power Mac away from an Apple Extreme. I knew how to make the Westell 327W in a bridge mode. Is there a way to make 327W communicate wirelessly with a FIOs modem/router?
    Thank you very much.
    Robert

Hmmm, perhaps something like this with a USB extension cord would be a solution, they have better Range even without an extension than Airport cards ime...

  • I have a Westell 6100, Can i request for a Westell 327W?

When I started using Verizon High Speed internet, 2 yrs ago. They gave me a Westell Model 6100 modem in the starter kit. I recently got a laptop and also other devices that use wi-fi. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a Westell 327W modem from verizon?

I am not sure if you can request a Westell 327W. You can maybe tell them that you have Wireless, and would like a new modem combo that has built in wireless.
In the meantime as you wait for another answer...
#1 It does help to know that you can go to a store and buy a new modem combo that has wireless.
For example: If you go to http://www.circuitcity.com/ -> Computers & Office -> Networking & Internet -> Installation kits -> and then you can select the "Actiontec Wireless DSL Gateway/Starter Kit for Verizon (GT704WGV)"
This example is a modem combo that has wireless, and Verizon will support.
I am not saying that you should go to a store (online or in person), buy a modem combo with Wireless, supported by Verizon (or otherwise), or even buy that Specific router.
    Moving along....
#2 Does the 6100 modem combo have only one or at least two LAN ports?
    #3 Are you NATTED?
This means for example on Windows:
    a) Go to Start -> Run.
    b) Type in cmd
    and press enter.
    c) In the new window, called the command prompt: Type in ipconfig /all
    and press enter.
If you are not on Windows, please post and someone will help you...
#4 If the IP address found is one of the following three important ranges, you are NATTED.
    a) 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
    b) 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
    c) 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
#5 If NATTED, is there any device that is between the Westell 6100 and your computer? b) If so, what is the brand and model of it?

  • Westell 327w and Wireless Access Point

I had DSL last year, but have since changed to FIOS, which I love.  So I have the Westell 327W modem/router that isn't being used.  I have decided to use it in another project for the 4 port ethernet and the wireless capability.
As this other project, we are using another service, which isn't DSL.  However, I figured that I could use the 327w as the wireless access point.  I currently have access to the internet through the provided internet service and from there I go into a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall.  From there I run an ethernet cable to the 327w.
As long as I plug a computer into one of the 4 ethernet ports on the 327w, I'm able to ping to the Internet using either the IP address or using DNS.  I'm able to surf and everything.
I have also set up the wireless and using WPA security and I'm able to connect a laptop to the wireless.  I get the IP address via DHCP from the ASA, so I have turned off the DHCP server on the 327.  I have also turned off the firewall.  I then test connectivity and I can ping anything on the network that is assigned by the ASA, but when I try to ping to an Internet address, by the address, I get request timed out.  I also don't get anything back on DNS and so forth.
What do I need to do on the 327 to allow the wireless to work with the current connection set up.
Thanks for the help and information.

I got it to work.  What I had to do was to set up the 327w in VLAN mode so that the wireless side would send the packets out the ethernet port to the ASA or another router.
In fact, I'm writing this on the wireless setting of the 327w.  So setting the VLAN allow the wireless to send and receive packets.

  • IBook G4 Westell 327W problems...

My wife's iBook has caused a unique problem....
We upgraded to Bellsouth DSL 6.0, and with that got a Westell 327W modem/router.
The modem plays nice with my netgear wgps606, our dell laptop, anything connected to an ethernet port, but....
If the iBook is on and connected via airport, after about 10min (like clockwork), the modem will reset as if it was powered off, and turned back on. At first we thought it was the modem (this is modem #3)... all the modems did the same thing... We definitely know that the iBook is causing/related to this problem. My wife was out of town, and no problems whatsoever... when she came back, the problem resurfaced. Westell has the latest firmware, iBook is running 10.4.9
Does anyone have ANY ideas how the iBook could be causing this??
We never had a problem before w/any wireless router (previously had a Netgear 814 wireless) and the iBook
    HELP!!!!
    Thanks
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Thanks for the advice, Rhonda:
I tried the suggestions you made, but unfortunately I was not able to read the results of the S.M.A.R.T. status check. One of the symptoms of my problem is that no words are visible in any of the OS functions, so while I was able to open the window, and I could see and click on the HD icon, I could not read anything in the box to the right. This is similar to what happens when I go to a pulldown menu, or when I try to login.
In addition, some things seem to work sporadically. For example, one time the computer wasn't recognizing my speakers, but the next time I turned on the computer, it did. Sometimes the dock is visible, and other times not. I am afraid something ominous is happening.
And, yes, I did double check the available space, and it is about 23.47 GB. Thanks for the reminder , though.
If anybody has any more suggestions, I am all ears. Thanks!

You could try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). Please check again on the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? (Make sure it's not MB instead of GB — don't laugh, it's happened.) Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • Adding another Westell 327W, currently have D90-327W15-06. Can I use A90, B90 or C90?

I'm adding a second Westell 327W to my residence.  The first one is a D90-327W15-06 and works great.  I wanted to add another wired connection to a different part of my residence and I know I have to add a Westell 327w, but wondered if I could add the following:
    A90-327W15-06
    B90-327W15-06
    or
    C90-327W15-06
and would that work with the current DSL signal I get throughout the house?  Do  I need to only add the D90-327W15-06 version of the Westell 327W?
    Thanks

#1 You can replace a modem combo.
#2 The only way to use more than one modem combo, unless I am mistake, is to have another phone number.
#3 You can add a wireless extender or another wireless router (but setup as a Hub/Switch/Wap) if you want to extend the existing network.
About converting a second router into a Hub/Switch/OR Wap, see:

  • Westell 327W Wireless Problem

My 327W is increasingly dropping the wireless signal.  There doesn't seem to be any regularity to the problem.  It happens randomly, day and night, sometimes several times a day and some days not at all.  It has been getting worse since I first noticed it.
I'm fairly certain it's the modem itself, rather than the computer(s).  I have experienced the dropout with two different laptops, a PS3, and an iPod Touch.  When the signal disappears it occurs simultaneously on each of the other devices, and the signal/network isn't visible when viewing available wireless networks on the laptops and iPod.  Typically it only lasts for a couple of minutes, and the signal will reappear and the devices will reconnect.  While the wireless signal is out, the wired connections still function properly.
Is there possibly some way to repair the 327, or would it be best to simply replace it?  What would be the most comparable replacement if I have to go that route?

#1 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router, you could put the Westell 327w into bridge mode.
The directions for that are located by following this path...
    a) http://start.verizon.net/
    b) Support
    c) Internet
    d) Home Networking
    e) Connecting a third party router.
    f) The directions for the 327w.
#2 If you do not have a RJ-45 WAN port router, then..
.. I would believe that you would want to either:
    a) get the firmware more up to date on the Westell 327w.
    b) OR get a RJ-45 WAN port router and put the Westell 327w into bridge mode.
    ^^
An example of a RJ-45 WAN port router, is the Linksys WRT54G.

  • Westell 327W as main wireless base and AE as WDS wired to Mac mini

I'm trying to get internet access to my non-airport-ready mini, without having my Westell 327W wireless router in the same room, and no cat5 cables stretched across my house.
Does anyone know if it's possible to use AE to pick up the 327W's signal and feed it wired to the mini? I've read about WDS mode in AE, but I've heard there may be issues with that Westell router. Are there any wireless routers that could definitely work with AE in the manner I've described?
    FYI, I use Verizon DSL

Are there any wireless routers that could definitely work with AE in the manner I've described?
Another AirPort Express (AX) or an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).

  • Westell 327W - New Menu

I recently discovered the new menu display for the Westell 327W and I like it, for the most part.  It is much easier to work with and see all the settings.  However, I am concerned about one issue.  On the Wireless Status screen, which does not require a login to view, it shows the value of the WPA Shared Key.  Does anyone else see this as a security risk?

Yes, I see it as a security risk, but I'm more concerned with the fact that I had to spend over an hour getting my wireless to work again tonight due the changes, and I cannot use WPA security anymore.  The options on the new menus don't match up to the options on my computer. Can anyone guide me on how to match the 2 up so I can use WPA security?  I'm also looking for ways to increase the signal strength on this router so the signal will reach all roooms upstairs in my house.

  • Westell 327W gateway does not recognize Brother network printer

The Westell 327W gateway does not recognize Brother network printer model MFC-490CW.  Any idea?

I took a look at the Brother www site and would recommend the following:
Temporarily Connect the Printer to the Network with an Ethernet Cable
Run the Brother Installer Application to reconfigure the printer for Wireless (CD That Came w/ Printer)
You will need the Network Name (SSID) and Passcode (WEP Key) from your Router.
Once configured you will be able to disconenct the Ethernet Cable and use it wireless.
