Westell 9100EM and Linsys WRT54G together

In my house, the Westell 9100EM router is in the Far Northeast corner of the home where my (rather old) home computer is located...  Our bedrooms are located on the exact opposite corner of the home, in the SW area.  Wireless service is quite poor in that area.
I have an existing Linksys WRT-54G router that worked very well when I had SBC DSL at an older house in another area.  What I'm thinking is to put the WRT-54G in the middle of the house or in the back bedroom to provide wireless to that corner.
I see a lot of information on the boards and so forth about the Actiontec router and doing this but very little on the 9100EM router.  Can anyone point me in a direction that gives more thorough directions for this?  Has someone made this work?
Thanks in Advance for the help!

Only if you have an ethernet port where you want to put it.  If you do connect to it locally hard wired and change the subnet to 192.168.2 and set the wanport to a fixed address on the 192.168.1 subnet e.g. 192.168.1.254  Then connect the wan port of the linksys to a lan port of the 9100em via the in house wiring.  the linksys by default cannot connect by wirelss to the 9100em.
If you have no inhouse wiring and are somewhat technically savvy and your wrt54g is a newer rev you can hack the firmware to change it to a wireless forwarder - see tomato.  Google it on the net.  Be warned that if you mess it up you have a very light boat anchor.

  • Successful DSL Setup With Westell 6100G and Linksys WRT54G Router

After a week of searching I finally figured out how to get DSL setup with my Linksys router.
All I could get out of the Westell > Linksys router configuration was DSL downloads limited to less than 0.2 Mbps.   No matter what I did on the router settings that was it.    I had a second eHome router that easily configured and achieved the 1.0 Mbps download speeds so that confirmed Verizon and the Westell modem were not the issue.
So what's wrong with the Linksys router configuration?    I had the Linksys WRT54G router Version 5.   Checking the firmware it was the original release of 1.0.0.   (See your routers instructions which can be downloaded from Linksys for how to check your firmware).   I downloaded the latest firmware version for this router model and version number.    Following the Linksys instructions I flashed the latest firmware 1.02.8.   Now I had an updated modem ready to be configured for DSL.
Assuming you already followed Verizons instructions to set the Westell modem to bridge mode setup your router to work with it.
Step 1: Go into the modem typing its address... Default 192.168.1.1   leave the ID blank and the default password is admin.
Step 2: Go to the Basic > Setup screen.
Step 3:  Select PPPoE and the screen menus will change
Step 4:  Enter your Verizon ID  (exclude @Verizon.net)
Step 5:  Enter your Verizon Password.
Step 6:  Go to the bottom of the screen and hit Save.   Wait and the router will indicate it was saved.
That's it.  All you need are the three entries above to get it working.   Turn off the PC, Router and Westell.   Turn on the Westell, then the router and then boot the PC.   It should work at this point.    I now get the full DSL speed for both downloads and uploads.
The bottom line....check you router, especially the older models for updated firmware before you give up on it.

Glad top see you found a configuration for your Westell and Linksys to function.  Thanks for posting resolution.

  • Macbook and linsys wrt54g v5 wireless router

I was getting random lockups when my macbook used my wireless router. I did some research on the internet and discovered it was a very common problem. There were various solutions that seemed to work for people, but I figred one out that is very easy to do. I changed a setting in the wirless section of my router under the advanced settings.. original value for beacon interval was 100 msec I changed it to 90 msec and all is working well. No lockups on the router in 2 days so far. My firmware version on the router is 1.02.0 .
    Hope this helps someone.
Does anyone know how I can change these same settings on the macbook?

i traded with a friend of mine for a wrt54g v4 router so i could use hyperwrt firmware instead of being stuck with the linksys firmware. there was nothing compatable with v5 and i had the same problem,no problems anymore tho. v5 does suck tho, no problems with the macbook.

Logon to the router and select advanced then select Personal domain name
Enter your dyndns name and credentials for it and save
Not sure what you mean by this

Are you saying you want to access the camera from outside your local network? I.E from the internet?
If so you would have to set up the correct port forwarding rules thru both routres to whatever the listening application is.

  • Westell 9100EM and Linksys SPA942 phone

I just switched to FiOS and my internet connection is fine, with the glaring exception of my VOIP phone. The hardware is as described in the subject line. This is a pretty serious problem for me and if it cannot be resolved, will be a show stopper. Using my own router is not an option since that evidently breaks the television's on-screen guide.
I've placed the phone in the DMZ and it had no apparent effect.

    Who is your VoIP provider
If you log into the Westell at http://192.168.1.1/ (Use the username of admin, password being your router's serial number found on a sticker beneath the router), locate the Firewall Logs under the Firewall Settings and see if it shows any mention of blocked data whenever your VoIP phone attempts to connect.

  • Westell 9100EM - Port Forwarding

So, I'm a newbie when it comes to port forwading, and I have tried all the tricks I can find on the internet.
I need to open some ports on my Westell 9100EM and I can't seem to find out how to get a step by step guide. I don't want to mess anything up, so I want to be save about not just trying things out.
    This is what I need:
    - Allow port 6112 TCP out and allow established sessions in
    - Allow port 6112 TCP in
    - Allow port 6113-6119 TCP out and in
It seems somewhat straightforward, but perhaps i'm missing something. If anyone can get back to me with some step by step ideas, you'd be my hero forever!
Thanks again for helping another noob.

I remember seeing somewhere that people had trouble forwarding groups of ports and had to make a rule for each port.
    Something to keep in mind.
Works ok for my FTP server on non standard ports on a 9100EM, I just changed the port numbers on the example.

  • Wireless IP Camera Won't Connect To Westell 9100EM Router

I'm trying to connection an IP camera, on Fios, to my Verizon Westell 9100EM router.
Connecting the camera via a wired connection works fine.  Port forwarding is automatically configured when turning the camera on, at TCP ANY 554, and the IP camera is viewable on the web.  No worries.
However, when unplugging the cord, the router never recogizes the camera.  Not after resetting, powering off/on, etc.  Both the WEP and SSID are set correctly on the camera.  All other wireless devices (laptops, Xbox 360, iPhone, etc.) work fine on the router.
Naturally, the camera people blame Verizon and Verizon blames the camera people.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

What are the details on the camera (Make, model, etc) ?

  • Trouble replacing Westell 9100EM router w/ Asus RT-AC68U

I got a new router (ASUS RT-A68U) and want to replace the Westell 9100EM that came installed w/ my FiOS package.
I have the new router connected, and it can get to the internet just fine.  It's gui says it's connected to the internet, and I can use it's onboard diagnostics to ping google.com, do a tracert, etc.  However, none of the devices I connect to the new router can get an IP address.  My WIRED connection from the PC to the router is unable to get an IP, even after ipconfig /release and /renew (Windows 7, from command line).  My mobile phone can connect wirelessly to the new router, but is also unable to get an IP address.
Are there some settings I need to manage in order to have it automatically assign IPs to connected devices?  I've set the new router to use google's DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4).  Do I need to use verizon's servers first?  Is there a change to the subnet mask or anything else that I'm missing?
Thanks to anyone who can offer some advice

Reset the router to factory defaults by pressing the reset button,
By default the router is set up as 192.168.1.1 so enter that address in a browser and connect
The default login is uerid admin and password admin
you should be able to use Quick Internet Setup QIS
Your fios account will give you an automatic dhcp address and no userid and password is required for that
at this point your router should be connected to the internet.
Using the main manu select lan and make sure the dhcp server is turned on (it's the radio button toggle at the top), should be by default and it should be handing out addresses on the 192.168.1 subnet.
On your machine run cmd and type in ipconfig /all - certify that you have an ip address of 192.168.1.x
If you've set the router dns to the google dns servers after the router reset then ipconfig should also show you that your dns servers are what you entered on the router if so
All is OK an you should be up and running
You'll probably want to change the default wireless settings, how to do that is inb the user manual.
There is no need to reference the Verizon dns servers

  • Computer not being registered in DNS on Westell 9100EM

I have a Westell 9100EM in my office where some systems register in the DNS and some not.  All the systems are in the connections page.  All Three PCs are Windows XP, 2 have no problem, just one.  I have tired ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew and ipconfig /registerdns in that order, checking the Westell DNS each time, no change. The two printers register no problem, my D-Link NAS registers.  I just need to get this last PC to register.  I have compared TCPIP properties, all 3 XP systems are the same.  Any ideas?

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62 and Windows 8.1.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • Bridging a Westell 9100EM Router to a Netgear N600

    Hello there,
I was wondering if there was a way to turn my Westell 9100EM Router into an access point/bridge, so I can setup my Netgear N600 Router to work as a client, so that the signal is evenly and more furtherer spread across my house. I am an intermediate when it comes to networking, so a step-by-step would be heavily appreciated. Thank you!

If you have FiOS TV service, then you shouldn't bridge it.  Verizon interlaced so many TV features into the westell router that it would probably put a damper on your FiOS TV experience.
    These features include
    The Guide System and Updates
    The Video On Demand
    The Widgets
    Caller ID on TV
    Multi Room DVR
    Remote DVR
So if you have FiOS TV, don't bridge.  Instead you CAN piggy back the router, and get the same affect. Follow the instructions below.
Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router?
If you don't have FiOS TV service, then Check Which Wan LIGHT is lit on your router.
If you have just the ETHERNET WAN lit, then just simply release your ip address of your westell, disconnect it and plug in your router.  Configure it for DHCP and you should be good to go.
If you have Coax WAN Lit, then you can make a choice.
You can hook up ethernet cable from the Verizon ONT directly to your router. Call Verizon and ask them to switch you to ethernet (online chat also might be able to help you do this)
You can try bridging the modem using one of the methods listed in this FAQ

  • Westell 9100EM Configuration

Is there a way to backup and / or restore the WesTell 9100EM configuration?

log into your router and go to the "Advanced" tab.  Just below the tab that you just clicked on you will see a box with two optionsystem Settings and Configuration File.  Click on Configuration file and you will then have the chance to save that file.

  • Westell 9100EM VPN Issue

I have a work laptop that utilizes a Cisco VPN in order to communicate to the work server. I connect wirelessly thru my home network via the Westell 9100EM. This has worked flawlessly for 3-4 years.
Less than a week ago, it stopped working. I could access server based drives via a hard IP address but not the normal way. Likewise, OUTLOOK no longer would access the email server.
    Three observations:
    1. I went to a Starbucks and attempted to use the VPN. This was successful (wireless).
    2. At home, I then tried a wired connection to the Westell router and it also successfully connected via the VPN.
    3. Normal wireless connectivity (no VPN) via the Westell functions correctly.
The VPN connection fails only at home and when using wireless connectivity - this failure only manifested itself about a week ago after 3-4 years of successful operation. I have also performed a hard reset of the router to no avail.
Any insight into this issue and resolution would be appreciated.

Well, I just got the replacement Westell router (a Rev. B - mine was a Rev. A) and set it up to try it out.
**bleep** if it didn't fail in the same way! I guess it's not a router issue after all. I am completely stumped as to why the VPN fails wirelessly only at my home. More ideas and comments are welcome.
BTW, I think I will keep my old router and return the new one. My old router is "burned in" and has more options than the new one in some areas. Also, Verizon gave me a contact number for Westell tech support - I'll be calling them next week.

  • Westell 9100em crashes periodically

    I have had a Westell 9100em for about a year - (model no A90-9100EM15-10, firmware version 1.02.00.04),
Every so often, the router crashes and loses all configuration information. In addition, all log entries are wiped out except for a number of entries that read December 31, 2002. This usually happens when I am away and most dependent on having access to my network.
UPNP is disabled. I am using WPA/WPA2 security on the wireless. I have static mac addresses that are working fine when the router is up and my connection is coax.
More recently I have discovered that one thing that can cause it to crash is trying to access the wireless from a MAC laptop. Even if a machine is not authorized to access the wireless, I don't think it should be crashing the router,
Verizon replaced the router a couple months into this and it seemed to go away for awhile, but maybe I was just lucky and no MAC users were trying to access my wireless. It seems like a firmware issue and I see similar symptoms reported but only the one solution - turning off UPNP - which didn't help in my case. As near as I can tell, the firmware version I have is the latest. Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks in advance!

This is a problem with verizons equipment i have the same issues. I recently was contacted by someone at verizon who is contacting the distributors of these routers. Hopefully they get the problems fixed.

  • 9100EM and WRE54G

I have the westell 9100EM modem/router, and bought a linksys wre54g to try to increase the range. However, I simply cannot get the wre54g to work. If i use the setup CD, it always fails with the message "cannot associate with this ap in repeater mode". I also tried to do it manually by going to 192.168.1.240. The default gateway shows 0.0.0.0 when I reset. Everytime I set it to 192.168.1.1 and save the setting, 240 drops off the network. If i leave that alone, and put my wireless network's information in, the device also drops off the network. Has anyone had any experience with it? Any walkthrough or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Peter

Change wre54g to 192.168.1.50 instead of the defaulted range .240 and let me know if that helps.  If not
     1. reset the unit (push the reset button for 30 seconds with a large paper clip) 2. plug the WRE54G into a wall socket but do not connect it to the network with a network cable. 3. Use the CD software. 4. If the software finds your existing network that you want to connect to, say yes. If it finds the WRE only say no and try again. Eventually after several cycles like this it will find both. (If not reset the WRE again and try again). 5. Eventually you will have chosen your existing network and it will have found the WRE (with the very long default name). 6. Select MANUAL setup. 7. Give the WRE the same SSID as the existing network. 8. Give the WRE the same security method (WEP for example) and the passphrase you used for the existing network. 9. finally there will be this box that counts to 100% and then dissappears. Wait awhile. Sometimes nothing happens for 5 minutes. If and when the "Congratulations" box shows up and the two lights on the WRE are blue you are all set. If this does not come up you may have to reset the WRE and try again.

  • Slow connection with westell 9100Em router...

i decided to make my own thread and mayb a tech support will see it and solve my problems or anybody that know why this happens and can help me with this.
    1. my first problem is my speed, i never get what i paid for which is 20/5 and i know u wont always get your max speed but atleast close to it. the only time i get close to that speed is when i reset or reboot my router which is a hassel to do everytime i get on internet or when i call tech support to reset my ONT which is also a hassel to do everytime i get on the internet.
they tried to resolve it by saying its the router but i just got a replacement router yesterday, which is also a westell 9100EM router and still the same problem. if its not consistent with the speed, i will call tech support again but so far its not, its down to 5/1 and even 2/0.8.
2.my ping is really high, 500ms average and the max today was around 900ms and that i know its really bad when i know its suppose to be less than 100ms or even less than 50ms. so with this high ping, i cant play online on my 360 b/c the connection to each player is really bad with that high ping. my bullets for call of duty 4 modern combat is really laggy, so bad it lags for about a second or two which makes u a dead duck when you are out in the open.
if anyone can help me with this problem, i will appreciate your efforts.

If you send me a private message with your account info, I will look into your service and get this resolved for you.
