Western Digital 1T HD not recognized over FW800

I cannot get my WD 1T external HD to be recognized via the FireWire800 port. It's fine under firewire400, though. I've tried the powering everything off, wait 10 minutes, power to HD, then firewire cable connect to HD then to the MBP trick, and it still did not recognize. What's my next step?
Model Name: MacBook Pro 17"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03

Unfortunately, i don't have access to any other computer to test it. I haven't ever used this FW800 port on the laptop, either. never had any need before now. i think the drive ports are fine, i've never had any reason to question the before, and the drive does work on a 400 cord just fine.
is there a way to make sure the FW800 port on the MBP is fine/active/powered ?

  • Western Digital MyPassport 1TB not recognized

I have had a Western Digital MyPassport Essential (1TB) for a little more than a year now. I'd been using it fine with my Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody MacBook. This August, I purchased a MacBook Pro with Retina Display and now the drive rarely (if ever) shows up when connected. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, plugging it into different ports, and nothing works. Yet, when I try to use it with another computer it works fine.
Has anyone else had this problem/know of a fix? I ordered a new USB 3.0 cable from Amazon, so maybe that will solve the problem, but I'm looking for a solution in the meantime.

its not the cable, its the SATA card thats failing.   Seen it a 1000 times,  that part is a stinker and as sure as sunrise
junky 50 cent SATA bridge/card in an external HD
**When you plug it into another computer and find that it works but works only sporadically on your primary computer, thats also indicative of a SATA card failure, hence the "haunted hard drive syndrome" name given to the strange nature of external HD behavior. It often makes no logical sense what is going on when your HD cant be logically diagnosed due to odd behavior.
External HD are very easy to diagnose. Bad USB cable (on commercial sold USB drives) almost doesn’t exist anymore.
External USB HD have 4 'parts' (not counting the HD internals)
    1. USB cable (never an issue anymore, approaching 100%)
    2. HD enclosure.....a plastic or metal box which cannot ever be an issue.
    3. the HD itself   (which will either fail or make noticable 'going bad' signals)
    4. ....and last but not least is the epicenter of 'weak links' ,.....a SATA card/bridge that is connected to the HD inside the HD box, the size of a stick of gum, with SATA female on one side, and female USB on the other side, containing circuitry for data transfer between the SATA on the HD and to USB on the other.
While these bridge cards are better than they used to be, theyre still insanely unreliable.
There are literally probably MORE than 100,000 perfect external hard drives out there thrown away every year because people assume the "hard drive is bad" when really they could crack open the HD enclosure, remove the HD and put the good HD into a new enclosure.
See this video of the SATA CARD, its at 8:55min. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pS_EDsP2KI
All conventional HD external are nearly 100% like the video above.
This  nasty piece causes very odd behaviour, some have called it "haunted hard drive syndrome".  Random ejects, random strange vanishing of the HD , especially in mid transfer of data.
the card attached to the TOP of the HD plugs in, that the SATA bridge

  • Western Digital Firewire 100 not mounting

I have a Western Digital 100GB (WDCFireWireHD-Ox) that was working fine on X.4. I haven't used it in a while (probably since i upgraded to X.4.8) and when I tried to connect it to my powerbook, the hard drive doesn't mount. I dont get any information in disk utility either. Funny thing is if i go to the system profiler it shows up under the FireWire device tree. I haven't used my Lacie HD in a while either and it works fine on the firewire and USB port.
What can i do to get this HD to mount?

I've had this happen when I accidentally unplugged the Firewire cable from the computer without first unmounting the drive. A system restart allowed the drive to be recognized again.
Googling http://www.google.com/search?q=firewiredrive+not+recognizedMYBook&hl=en&safe=off&start=10&sa=N I see a few others with the same problem without any rhyme or reason as to what was causing it. In some instances, plugging in/out/in/out got it working again but that's really not good for your data.
Does the drive show up in Disk Utility? If so, have you tried mounting it from there? Just a thought. Good Luck

  • Digital download code not recognized as valid

I'm trying to download a digital download that came with a DVD purchase, but iTunes gets giving an error of: The code you entered is not recognized as a valid code. Any help would be appreciated.

I can tell you that you can submit the information but you may find out like me and many others here that it a waste of time. I got $30 lost because of a bad pack of iTunes cards and from what I seen here many people have the same problem as these $30 pack from apple fail to work most times.

That's just some of the cases I found here, after reading them I did something I would think no one would have to do for a company like apple. I did a look up on there iTunes for consumer reports and found this site. So now I am more worried. I won't be getting iTunes gift cards anymore, I will tell people to buy me visa. I'm also happy I never gave iTunes my bank account either after what I read there of people getting bill 500 - 900 in a day when not using there account. Keeping my MasterCard because if something like that happened it easy to report it and solve the problem.
All I can say is, good luck and don't give up as apple needs to fix this system they got.

  • 3G iPod charges but not recognized over Firewire

My 3G iPod is not recognized at all by Windows when I connect it by Firewire. I have tried 3 Firewire ports on my PC (2 nForce 4 onboard, one on a PCI Audigy 2ZS). I have the latest drivers, updates, etc. I have no known spyware, viruses etc. I have tried it on my old iBook G4 with OS X 10.3 too (not all software is current on there because I can't get it on the Internet right now, but for the same reason it shouldn't have any spyware or viruses either!) and have the same problems.
It does not show up as a hard drive or in device manager. iTunes says that no iPod is connected. iPod Updater says to connect an iPod. The iPod does not show the do not disconnect message.
I have tried restarting the iPod many times, as well as putting it into disk mode, all to no avail. It charges and plays my music fine, but neither the iPod nor the computer recognize that they are connected.
I don't think there is a problem with the Firewire cable but I don't have another one to try. I haven't seen solutions online for problems like this except one person who was told that Firewire doesn't work any more but USB is fine. I am going to see if I can get a USB cable to try it with and if that works I suppose I'm happy - I was planning on selling it soon and most people would want USB anyway.
I did find one site describing this problem and offering to fix it with a new logic board for just(!) £70 but I doubt I can sell it for much more that so it hardly seems worth it. Apple's service fee will definitely be more than the resale value!
      Windows XP Pro

I tried everything I could find that sounded relevant already. I think I had that 2006-01-10 firmware on there but the problem didn't happen straight after updating so I didn't think that was the problem at first. I couldn't downgrade the firmware because the computer couldn't see the iPod!
I've now bought a third party USB cable and it works perfectly. Therefore the problem seems to be either with the Firewire lead (which works only for charging) or something in the iPod hardware. I'll leave this open in case anyone actually knows why Firewire won't work.
Can you suggest the best firmware to restore it with before I sell it if 2006-01-10 is so problematic? It seems to work fine for me but it would be better to play it safe I suppose.

  • Digital Inputs do not record over long time periods

I am running Signals Express 2009 with a USB-6009.  I have a project that needs to record the states of 8 digital inputs over a 24 hour period.  The inputs typically do not change state for long periods of time.  When I run the project it does record and gather data if I stop it "soon"(I have gone as long as 30 min.)  When I leave it running overnight it does not appear to record anything.

If you have not already, you should try turning off display updates in the "Operate »Update Signal Views While Running" menu item.  Set this to Update None.  Also, turn off "Prepare log data for viewing" under the Logging part in the Tools » Options dialog.
When I ran your project overnight, it ran out of memory.  The first error it threw was "Not enough memory to complete this operation."  The problem was that SignalExpress saved a great deal of data in memory for easy displaying while it's running, but this grows too big when it runs overnight.  The second error was as follows:
    Logging Stopped:
Logging was stopped because an error occurred with a Step in the Project.
If this error is because of a device buffer overflow, you can improve performance by turning off display updates using the "Operate »Update Signal Views While Running" menu item.
You can also change the way signals are logged by changing the Logging Options in the Tools»Options dialog.
Turning off  the "Prepare log data for viewing" will greatly improve performance.

  • C6150 All In One is not recognized over network

My printer works fine for printing over the network.  My problem is that I cannot initiate a scan to computer, or initiate from within HP solution center.  I can access and interact with my printer directly via the web browser interface.  The HP driver install and HP home network diagnostic utility all find the printer OK on the network, but the diagnostic utility keeps saying that software is missing that is necessary to run the printer over the network.  I have uninstalled all HP software, then downloaded the full version of the latest HP software suite and installed it - all OK except now when I try to run Solution center it no longer even gets to the main menu - an error message comes up and says no HP devices were found and quits.  When obtaining software from the HP site I was careful to specify XP as the OS and have not tried anything that does not have XP listed as compatible.
I still can connect to it directly and print.  I have looked at every possible driver that HP has on the site.  I have run the scan diagnostic - It verifies the connection OK but when it gets to the driver section of the test it crashes and a Windows error message comes up and says it has encountered a problem and has to close.
I am running XP Home with all of the updates installed.

    Hi,
seeing as you can acces the printer via the browser, so directly from its ip adress the connection is ok. What in these cases is most likely is that there is something on your computer blocking HP software ability to check out the network. Most likely something like a firewall or virusscanner.

  • Canon MX860 not recognized over IJ Network

    Hi there,
ever since updating to 10.6.1, my MacBook Pro simply won't recognize/find my Canon MX860 printer over wireless any more. It's particularly weird since my MacBook Air has no problems finding the printer - everything (even wireless scanning) works on my MacBook Air. It seems that the update to 10.6.1 broke the installation on the Pro, but not on the Air.
I have read - I guess - every entry in these support forums dealing with the MX860 (wireless) and Snow Leopard, and yes, I have installed the latest drivers from Canon, have rebooted several times, yanked Parallels from my drive (without any effect), have rebooted into Safe Mode, etc. etc. I simply cannot get my MacBook Pro to find the darn printer over Canon's "IJ Network".
Yes, USB works just fine, but I want to use the wireless option. And the fact that every thing works fine with the MacBook Air just drives my up the wall. (And yes, I have tried moving the Printer folders from the Air to the Pro - no luck.)
Any help? I am running out of ideas ...
    jan

I have precisely the same issue with my MX850 not being recognised by my MacBook Pro but successfully recognised by my MacBook Air.
I noticed however that after opening the "print & fax" system preference and then clicking on the "+" button that the console showed this error message (which did not occur on the air):
    20/9/09 11:22:14 AM com.apple.ReportCrash.Root7206 2009-09-20 11:22:14.020 ReportCrash7206:250b Saved crash report for canonijnetwork7230 version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/canonijnetwork2009-09-20-112214localhost.crash

  • Western Digital 1tb not readable

My Laptop stopped working, plugged my western digital 1tb into my new macbook pro and it has a connection error. I receive a message saying it is not readable. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

The electronics in the Western Digital external backup drives aren't known to be very reliable.   You might try to see if it is readable on another system, and if not, then, if under warranty, contact Western Digital, or if not, remove the hard drive and put it into another external case.
If you need an external case, I like cases sold by OWC at http://www.macsales.com. Many of their cases use Oxford chipsets, which work well with macs.

  • External Hard Drives (and some flash drives) Not Recognized by Server2003

I recently purchased a new computer (Dell T100 server) and old Server2003 disk (OEM disk on eBay). Installed Server2003 and added File Server role only. My data is located on a Western Digital Passport that is recognized no problem on any other computer in the office (all XP). When I connect it to the server (front or rear, same result), it does not give it a drive letter, and says there are 0 bytes used 0 bytes free. Under Computer Management->Storage->Disk Management it shows: Volume: blank, Layout: Partition, Type: Basic, File System: blank, Status: Healthy. It's as if it does not know how to read the file system.
What do I need to do to Server2003 to get this drive with my data on it to be read by my new server?

    Hi,
Following is the System Requirements from Western digital’s website.
    Windows
    Available USB port
    Windows 2000/XP/Vista®
My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Hard Drives(WDMEB3200)
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=426
Yes, generally speaking, if an external drive or flash drive can be recognized by Windows XP, it should work in Windows Server 2003. However, there is no guarantee.
If possible, I recommend that you plug the “unrecognized” drive to some other Windows Server 2003 computers to test whether it works. If the issue continues, I suggest that you contact the vendor or the drive for more details.
By the way, what’s the version of Windows Server 2003 you used? Please update it to the latest service pack to check whether they works.
    Best Regards,
    Vincent Hu

  • Western Digital HDD

A supplier, www.datorbutiken.com, supplied this about IDE hard disks from Western Digital:
Western Digitals hårddiskar fungerar ej tillfredställande med moderkort som har nForce2-chipset. Detta fel yttrar sig på Western-diskar med varierande firmware-version, det går därför ej entydigt att peka på specifika modeller. Det kan alltså fungera i vissa fall, men risken att det inte gör det är för stor för att vi skall kunna rekommendera denna kombination. Ovanstående gäller även moderkort med VIA KT133A och 686B chipsets.
Short translation: "Western Digital HDDs does not work very well with..." You see what mobos are concerned. I can't find this info in the SATA section, why it seems to be a IDE problem.

The WDC + VIA 686B compatibility issue is way old and affected only WDC models with particular production or lot codes.  I can't remember for certain now if the solution was a firmware update or replacement from WDC, but I seem to recall that a replacement/exchange was offered by WDC.
Not heard of any problems with NForce 2.

  • Hallo ,why is it that when I delete a photo ,which is backed up by time machine and western digital external hard drive , that I am able to restore the photo okay but not the titles and descriptions . I have  a Macbook 4.1, mac osx 10.5.8 . Iphoto 7.1.5 ,

    QUESTION.
Hallo , my question is ;whenever I delete a photo and restore it through Time machine and Western digital external hard drive , I am able to restore the photo but not the titles and descriptions . Western Digital inform me that it isn't their external hard drive problem and suggest that it is an Apple software problem ?
    I am using  a Macbook 4.1 , with Mac OSX 10.5.8 . I photo 7.1.5 , last modifie4d 01/05/2010 -universal . Should I be upgrading  Iphoto ?
I hope that someone is able to help in this matter , as i have to restore 12000 photos !
    Thanking you in anticipation.
    Alan from Wigton

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.

  • Can Time Machine back up to a Western Digital "My Passport Wireless" over wifi?

I bought a Western Digital "My Passport Wireless" external hard drive / NAS to use as a Time Machine backup for my new MacBook Pro.  I plugged it in via USB, formatted it to HFS+, and ran Time Machine.  All good.
This hard drive has a wireless chip in it, so one can connect to it via wifi, either directly or through a router.  When I dismounted the drive and connected via wifi (via my router), my expectation was that I could run Time Machine and do periodic back-ups without having to remember to plug in the drive, etc.
I can see the drive and read/write to it.  I am connected as 'admin', not 'guest'.  It is named "MyPassport", both when connected via USB and via wifi.  When I try to use the drive via wifi for Time Machine, I'm asked:  "Do you want to stop backing up to “MyPassport” and use “TimeMachineBackup/TimeMachine” instead, or back up to both?"  When I select "Use both", I'm then told:  "Time Machine can’t access the backup disk “TimeMachineBackup/TimeMachine”.  The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 2.)"
Should it be possible for Time Machine to recognize the same archive, whether connected via USB or wifi?
If I cannot, can I at least back up a new archive over wifi.  I recognize that the first go at this would take a long time due to slow wireless transfer speed.  What does OSStatus error 2 mean?

So you think that you know better than Apple.
NAS is not supported by Time Machine, you can take all the risks you like but do not advise others to do so. It doesn't matter what WD say, they want you to buy one, Apple are the deciders of what is supported or not.
    Here's what WD say:
Note: WD does not provide technical support for Time Machine related issues. For assistance with backing up to a WD NAS drive, using the Time Machine application please contact Apple. As the backup application is built into the OS, they are the only ones qualified to diagnose a Time Machine related issue.
    Good luck.

  • Files not deleting on Western Digital My Book Mac

    Hello,
I recently deleted some time machine backups on my western digital my book mac. Unfortunately these files was not been deleted from the drive (the remaining disk space has not gone up circa 300GB). I have looked online and the issues seems to be the afp connection rather than using the smb connection.
I have reconnected using this type, but I am still unable to see the files to delete. I have tried to connect using terminal, but to be honest I have no idea what I am doing. The file path is smb://WubberTimeCapsule.smb.tcp.local/My%20Book...
Has anybody else seem this problem also, does anybody know of a way of deleting these files?

Thanks, it is an external hdd (Western Digital My Book Mac) connected to my old time machine (too small to fit everything on way) via the usb cable. The time machine is connected wirelessly to my network. Unfortunately I can not see the sparse bundle files anymore.
Just for the sake of clarification, that's a +Time Capsule,+ Apple hardware combining a wireless router and hard drive. +Time Machine+ is the Apple software that does backups, to various destinations, including +Time Capsules.+
This originated because I originally created the time machine backup with the external hdd connected directly to the mac. When I transferred the disk to the old time machine, it did not reuse the previous backup but created a new one. Hence in my ignorance I deleted the old files.
Ah, yes, that's a different critter. Time Machine stores backups differently when they're done directly vs. over a network. The backups done directly were stored in a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of the drive; the ones done over your network have that folder placed inside an odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ You cannot switch back and forth.
Which ones did you delete, and how?
It sounds like you deleted the Backups.backupdb folder, and didn't empty the trash, so they're still in the (hidden) trash folder on that drive. If so, disconnect it from your TC via +Airport Utility > Disks,+ connect it to your Mac, and empty the trash. That will take a very long time, as there are at least a few hundred thousand files there, perhaps many more.
A quick alternative would be to simply erase the drive, via Disk Utility, while it's connected to your Mac. That will erase all the new and old backups. If you just started the new set, that might be easiest.
If you decide to do that, see the green box in #Q2 of [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Capsule+ forum), for a way to speed up the first full backup.

  • Western Digital Passport not mounting

I have a western digital passport that I have used a couple of times.  Today I was transferring my music and it said there were corrupted files in my music, and all of a sudden the drive will not be recognized anymore.  I don't know what to do?  I have been reading everything online.  I have tried checking disk utility and it does not appear.  Tried checking the hard drive on another computer and it didn't pop up.  Please all suggestions are helpful.

The Western Digital Passport drives have a reputation for being power hogs. Your Macbook USB port might not be providing enough power to run the drive. This especially might be the case if you are running off of the battery only. Your PC ports might be giving slightly more power that is enough to run the drive.
I have a portable Simpletech drive (120Gb) that actually comes with a Y cable that plugs into two USB ports on my Macbook. This provides enough power to run the drive without needing a separate power adapter. The Western Digitals typically don't come with this Y cable, but one is offered. You can buy one off their website for about $20 that should allow you to use the drive with your Laptop. It's lame that everyone else provides such a cable for free while WD charges, but that's the way it is.
good luck with getting it to work.
