Western Digital 1tb not readable

My Laptop stopped working, plugged my western digital 1tb into my new macbook pro and it has a connection error. I receive a message saying it is not readable. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The electronics in the Western Digital external backup drives aren't known to be very reliable.   You might try to see if it is readable on another system, and if not, then, if under warranty, contact Western Digital, or if not, remove the hard drive and put it into another external case.
If you need an external case, I like cases sold by OWC at http://www.macsales.com. Many of their cases use Oxford chipsets, which work well with macs.

I plug my Western Digital My Passport 320gb drive into my eMac, and I get the message "the disc you inserted is not readable by this computer."
It works fine on Windows XP and my Eee PC 701 (running the default Xandros OS.)
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

    It's FAT32, I assume that's what you meant.

  • How do I erase an older Western Digital 1TB mirrored hard drive? Newer drives can be erased via a WD Utility, but the WD site says to "ask Apple" about the older ones.

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.  The hard drive is approx. six years old - a Western Digital for Macs, mirrored with 1TB on each half.
Because the drive is "infected" with Time Machine backups that I can't erase, I have removed all important files from the drive and now want to wipe it clean.  I've done this with new drives, via the WD Utility that came with the drive, but the older drive doesn't have such a utility.  The WD site only has a protocol for PCs.
I find nothing on the Apple site itself.  Can you community members help??
(I've tried various ways of deleting the Time Machine backups, but nothing has worked.  The instructions for that, which I read on a community support site, were too advanced for me to understand.  A Mac IT guy tried to erase the backups, but he didn't know how either.  So that is why I'm erasing the drive totally.  I've learned my lesson and have a dedicated Time Machine drive now.)

    Please be clear:
This is a mirrored RAID that you use as the startup disk?
You now have a different startup disk and wish to erase the RAID mirror?
Do you wish to continue using the RAID for backup?
If all you want to do is erase the RAID to get rid or the Time Machine backups, the use Disk Utility to erase the mirror disk mounted on the Desktop.

  • Western Digital Passport not mounting

I have a western digital passport that I have used a couple of times.  Today I was transferring my music and it said there were corrupted files in my music, and all of a sudden the drive will not be recognized anymore.  I don't know what to do?  I have been reading everything online.  I have tried checking disk utility and it does not appear.  Tried checking the hard drive on another computer and it didn't pop up.  Please all suggestions are helpful.

The Western Digital Passport drives have a reputation for being power hogs. Your Macbook USB port might not be providing enough power to run the drive. This especially might be the case if you are running off of the battery only. Your PC ports might be giving slightly more power that is enough to run the drive.
I have a portable Simpletech drive (120Gb) that actually comes with a Y cable that plugs into two USB ports on my Macbook. This provides enough power to run the drive without needing a separate power adapter. The Western Digitals typically don't come with this Y cable, but one is offered. You can buy one off their website for about $20 that should allow you to use the drive with your Laptop. It's lame that everyone else provides such a cable for free while WD charges, but that's the way it is.
good luck with getting it to work.

  • Will a western digital 1tb passport se work with lion?

Hi, bought a western digital hard drive at the same time as i bought my mac but it wont work with lion. can anyone help?

My WD Passport is working with Lion.
Did you reformat your drive using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
If you have and are still having problems, I would return it and get the Seagate GoFlex drive.

  • Western Digital 1TB Hard D "Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."

I've had this external Western Digital hard drive for a year, it stopped working, tried to repair in disc utility, repair/verify failed
"Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
    thats all i get!
    now what do i do?

If you have the data backed up, try using Disk Utility's Erase tab to reformat it. Then restore the data from backup.
If you have no backups, you might have good luck with DiskWarrior. It costs about $100.
If neither of those help, it sounds like the drive is dead.

  • Western Digital 1tb passport for mac not working???

The drive is spinning and I've had no problems with it thus far. So the drive is spinning but it is not showing up on my desktop. No error messages. The light on the external drive will flash continuously and consistently and then stop flashing and remain lit for a couple of minutes then resumes flashing. But it will not show up on my desktop.
    Any ideas?

While WD drives are OK, the electronics in their packaged backup units don't have a good track record. Have you tried another connection cable, just to rule that out? You've rebooted your MacBook? Is it still under warranty?

  • Western Digital drive not showing up in disk utility--Help please.

Hello all. This is my first post. I am having trouble with my WD 500GB external hard drive. It is not showing up in disk utility when connected either via the firewire or USB ports. I purchased the drive about 8months ago, brought it home and set it up as my Time Machine backup drive. It worked great for several months, until it got full. Then it stopped showing up on the desktop for no apparent reason. I discovered through reading support documents on the Apple web site that when I set the drive up initially I should have changed the partitioning protocol from master boot record to GUID, but I did not. I followed the apple web site instructions for making the change expos facto, but was instructed to press buttons that were "grayed out". As such, I couldn't do it. Perhaps foolishly, I thought that I would just start all over by reinitializing it, formatting it correctly (with my new found knowledge) and then do the time machine backup fresh. However, the drive no longer shows up in disk utility no matter how or in what order I connect it. When the drive is connected by firewire there is evidence of some recognition of the drive in system profiler, but it is listed as "External HDD Buttons and Lights". There is also evidence of the My Book showing up at a minimal level (eg. the firmware revision and a few other details are listed). On the front of the drive is a ring of blue lights that progress in a clockwise direction as soon as a connection is made via either firewire or USB. Before that it is solid blue. I have read through all the info that I can find on this site, and all the suggestions require the drive being recognized in disk utility. Without that, I am stuck. I know this must be a solvable problem, because the drive just a bucket of parts before it was manufactured. I just don't know enough to solve the problem or even know what qeustion to ask. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post.

If you can't boot from an OSX DVD, it sounds bad. Yet I think you said you were running Disk Utility from the DVD?
I got an external Firewire drive enclosure for 2.5 inch IDE drives from Other World Computing (OWC)
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MOTGFW400/ but similar items are available from many vendors like Newegg. About $60 for the basic model. More money can buy additional interfaces on the enclosure like FW800 and USB2; an AC adapter instead of letting the firewire bus power the drive (usually OK).

  • Western Digital 1TB My Book Pro Freezes while listening to iTunes.

MP3 collection is on the MyBook.
iTunes plays MP3s when all of a sudden, during a song, it halts playback and Finder with it (beachball).
Can't access Finder nor the mounted MyBook drive. Any kind of query on the MyBook (through Terminal or Disk Utility) at this point hangs the app that is querying. MyBook lights are on constantly.
Upon shutdown the system hangs at the blue screen forever until I do a hard shutdown with the MBP's power button and disconnect from FW800 port at which point drive turns off.
Upon restart it's fine until I go into iTunes again and hangs again (not at the same song). I am able to replicate this problem everytime.
    Any suggestions?

What are your Energy settings? Is your MacBook or MyBook going to sleep? You say you can repeat it, is it repeatable at exactly the same time? If so this would make me think it is something to do with your power settings.
Hey Rimcrazy, no my MBP is not going to sleep. The power settings are to set to Custom which leaves the MBP always on 24/7 pretty much. The problem is indeed repeatable but not at the same time. I've emailed WD about it and I have yet to receive answer. The MyBook is going to sleep when not active (normal) and the data seems to be intact after numerous hard shutdowns.

  • Install and run  Leopard on Western Digital 1TB "My Book"2 Studio Edition

    Hi
I'm considering buying this HD and would like to install and run the OS from it - is this relatively easy? And what connection would you recommend usb or fw400?
Once installed on the hd i'd then like to wipe the iMac HD and do a clean install.
Also, i assume it would be advisable to partition the wd!
    thanks
    ianjh

When you say "run the OS from it", do you mean permanently or just until you've finished your tidying? I'm not sure I'd recommend using an external drive all the time although technically there's no reason you shouldn't.
What is going to happen to your existing data? From what you describe, it looks as if it will be lost. My suggestion would be to partition the WD as you say and use one partition for a clone of your existing internal drive (use SuperDuper! from www.shirtpocket.com or an equivalent) and the other for Time Machine. If you wish you could then do a clean install on the internal drive (why do you feel the need to do that?) and perhaps use Migration Assistant to put your data back from the clone onto it.

  • Unable to mount Western Digital Hard Drive after upgrade to 10.6.4

I have tried to search for a solution to my problem, but have not found anything that seems to help. So hopefully someone here can provide some guideance.
I have a Western Digital 1TB My Book that I have been using primarily for backing up photos. The drive is formatted as FAT-32 so I can work with it from my Windows XP laptop too if I need to (although my Windows laptop mostly collects dust since getting the Macbook). I have been using the feature in Adobe Lightroom to automatically backup each photo to the My Book when it is being loaded into Lightroom. I also backup the Lightroom catalogs to the My Book.
Occassionaly I would get the "beach ball of death", but not always related to being in Lightroom at the time. I recently had a beach ball incident. After a restart and using Disk Utility on the Macbook's HD, I decided to check for any updates. At this time I ended up upgrading from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4. After doing the upgrade, I can see the drive in Disk Utility, but the "My Book" volume is greyed out. Running "Repair Disk" has no effect. The "Repair Disk Permissions" buttons are greyed out. I cannot get the My Book volume to mount to be able to use the drive. If I plug the drive into my Windows XP laptop, Windows can work with it just fine. I ran the windows check disk program, which took 24 hours on 1TB, and it did not find anything. Plug back into my Macbook, and it still cannot mount the My Book volume.
I also tried to plug in a Western Digital My Passport portable 400GB drive which is powered by the USB and does not require a separate power supply cord. It has the same issue where the "My Passport" volume cannot be mounted.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the Macbook to mount the drive again? NOTE: I'll probably not be able to try any suggestions or respond until Monday, but if there are multiple suggestions queued up over the weekend it will give me a good starting point when I can get back to this on Monday.
    Thanks,
    Jim

The Combo Update worked. But I need to know why.
Although I have no proof or authoritative source that confirms this, using the Combo seems to account for anything missed by or changed since earlier updates.
This originally started after check for updates, and the 10.6.4 update is when the problem started. What is different about the Combo Update, ...
Pragmatically, the difference is that it just works for me. Mathematically:
Combo http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 is File Size: 887.37 MB
Incremental http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1049 is File Size: 607.21 MB
    887.37 - 607.21 = 280.16 MB more in the Combo.
... and how would I have known about it had someone else not directed me to it.
If you have skipped some updates, your Mac's Software Update... (SU) will suggest Combo.
Someone else (Thanks, Defcom! ) told me about Combos years ago while I was still running 10.3.x.
BTW, many users never use or seem to need the Combo.
You seem to be an experienced user. If you have been using Macs trouble-free for a long time without updating via the Combos, you may decide not to bother with the Combo except in specific cases where you have a problem that isn't corrected by other fixes.
Is there somewhere on the website I need to check regularly in addition to the normal updates?
You can search Support Downloads for the latest Combo Updates any time.
      http://support.apple.com/downloads/
You can decide when to search any way you choose, but here is my process:
    • I set my Macs' SU Preferences to Check for updates: "Daily."
    • I do NOT enable "Download updates automatically."
    • When SU notifies me that a Mac OS update is available, I quit SU without installing anything.
    • Then I repair permissions, download and install the Combo, and repair permissions again.
    • I then run SU again to install any other updates that are available on the same date.

  • Verify or re stripe Western Digital drive

    Hi guys
I recently bought a Western Digital 1TB Studio Edition drive which worked a treat until I passed it on to an Avid editor to place some files onto it for my Final Cut. He ran it of an Avid PC, couldn't see any of my files and decided (stupidly) to re format the drive to Windows NT (NTFS). Now I cant delete any of the files he placed off it, re format, or verify the drive back to MAC OS as Disk utility does not allow me to do anything with it as its protected somehow. Could someone out there please help me before a throw the now expensive 'door stop' at him.
    many thanks

    HI,
*"as Disk utility does not allow me to do anything with it as its protected somehow."*
Run disk utility and repair disk permissions with the external drive connected to your Mac.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
Now relaunch Disk Utility and see if the drive shows up on the left side of the window and isn't greyed out.
