Western Digital 500GB SATA-300 HDD

Can i install a Western Digital 500GB SATA-300 Hard Drive in my imac?
Please help!
My imac is a Intel Based 17¨ 1.83 MHZ.

You can't install anything (including a new drive) inside an Intel iMac with the exception of ram, if you want to preserve the warranty. This is not to say internal drive couldn't be replaced if you are willing to open the case, or get someone to do it for you. Not clear which Intel iMac you have, your descriptive line at the bottom of your post said it was a "g5" and none of the intel iMac's are g5 based. If yours is a core 2 duo it is quite possibly under the original warranty still, but even if it is a core duo machine and you purchased Applecare you would be advised not to pry open the case.
A better approach would be to buy an external drive in an enclosure with a USB or firewire interface and use that for your drive expansion.

  • Does Satelite R630-146 support SATA II (SATA-300) HDD

    Hi,
I am planning to change my current HITACHI 5K320 320GB HDD (HTS543232L9SA00) which is SATA I (*SATA-150*) to new HDD, but I can't find any information will my Toshiba Satelite R630-146 support new SATA II (*SATA-300*) HDD.
Maybe anyone has any ideas where I could find such information?
    Thanks,
    Vaidas

    Hello
SATA II HDDs are downgrade compatible to older SATA I interface. They have the same power and specification so its no problem to change the HDD to SATA II.
Furthermore there is no HDD capacity limit so you can install every 2.5 HDD. You can buy one with 500GB, 750GB or more, thats no problem :)

  • Replaced failed HDD Sat. L455-5000 with new Western Digital 320 SATA drive-problems with recovery

Original HDD died.  Replaced it with new WD 320 SATA from Best Buy-nice drive-good reviews.  Used Recovery Center DVD's I had burned earlier.  Three with Toshiba Recovery  2 with Windows Recovery Envrinoment and DRivers/Apps.
Toshiba REcovery only asked for first 3.  Computer restart after Recovery Install(First Three Disks) gives error message:
    File: \windows\system32\DRIVERS\LPCFilter.sys
    Status:  0xc0000428
WIndows Cannot Verify Digital Driver Signature.
Windows Boot Manager "screen" always comes up and Windows fails to start.
1.Asking for a windows installation disk-thought this was given in Toshiba Recovery DVD's I burned.
    2. Chosse language settings-click next
    3. CLick " repair your computer."
I thought the Toshiba Recovery Disks were supposed to install everything for me.  I don't have a sparate windows system disk.  Never burned one
    Any help woud be great.
    Thanks,
    Charles

    Time for some good news.
I received and installed an OEM WD 250 (Toshiba) replacement drive.  After loading the recovery disks this morning-it worked perfectly-just like "out of the box."
It was the HDD failure after all.  No software gliches at all.  Windows update of course is attempting to re-load about 500 updates. LOL.  I also learned to spread them out in groups of 10-20 long ago as well.  This will take some time; but the laptop is running fine.
So I learned some great lessons.  1)-stick with OEM replacement hardware-computers are "locked in time" to a definite hardware configuration that works well at that time in history.  2) If I had not used my own "decision" tree to problem solve-I'd still have a dead computer.  3) I was correct to order an external drive enclosure to test the bad drive after I was unable to do so with the laptop.  4)I made the right choices to contact the Western Digital Drive support to find out the new drive really might also be the problem.  5) It was also great to be able to get such amazing help on this forum too-what a great resource for Toshiba owners. 6)Finally-I was able to "chat" with the Toshiba Rep. online to confirm the OEM part number of the WD drive they had used-and ordered -cheaper- from Amazon.com.
    7) After 2 weeks of my own time(and great online resources) and $80.00-I fixed my laptop myself.  Never had to mail it anywhere.
    8) I also ended up with a great external backup drive-that I was always too lazy-and cheap-to order for myself  before.  LOL.
    9) Now what about the Toshiba OEM Graphics card that the "Windows Experience Survey' always says I need to replace?  Nope -not going there -yet.
    Thanks for all the help-
    Sincerely,
    Charles

  • Which Western Digital 500GB drive?

I'm ready to buy an internal non-raid 500 GB SATA drive and I decided on the Western Digital brand. The only problem is that I see at least three model numbers for, what looks like, the same or similar drives. The model numbers are as follows:
    WD5000KS
    WD5000AAKS
    WD5000KSRTL
The prices vary and the WD5000AAKS is the least expensive offered by ZipZoomFly for only $136.50.
Can anyone advise me on the differences (if any) between these models and which would be the preferred model to get for an Intel MacPro? Thanks.

    My choice: Caviar SE16 WD5000KS
Found this from Google SilenPCreview forums
    WD5000KS vs WD5000AAKS
I don't have any test equipment, but I do have a 5 KS's and 2 AAKS. All are at 128 AAM in rubber grommet mounting.
    Subjectively:
The AAKS are only very slightly quieter than the KS's. They do have noticeably less vibration. Seek noise is the same on both. Spin up/ Spin down is quieter on the AAKS.
I usually go by StorageReview forums and reviews, and SilentPCReviews, as well as look to see if AMUG has anything to say. Also, check WDC Store
I buy direct from WDC (so I would get latest model) as well as ZZF and OWC.

  • Cannot use Western Digital HDD with Pismo?

    Good evening,
I am trying to use a Western Digital Passport 250GB external HDD USB with my Pismo, but it mounts the HDD, but says it is unreadable and then forwards me to the Disk Utility. It seems the HDD but I can't partition it or anything. So, I partitioned it on my G4 iMac, on which it works perfectly, and then removed it and tried to use it on the Pismo; again, no luck! Is this a fool's errand or am I doing something wrong? Please advise as I need more than the 20GB internal HDD.

    spcmiller,
I am sorry the suggestion did not work but underpowered USB ports on Mac portables is an issue with external USB HDs. You have something else going on which I cannot answer.
I would suggest posting in the Powerbook G4 (15-inch Titanium):
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=129
The Titanium also has USB 1.1 ports, has issues with USB HDs, and the forum has more activity than the Older Powerbook Computers. Also, if you wish, perform a search in the Titanium forum for 'USB western digital' for many posts. I saw none that matched your experience. When you post, I would explain that you have a Pismo and were sent to this forum for the reasons I mentioned; you can even link to this thread if you wish.
Sorry I could not solve your issue.

  • Something to say about Western Digital Caviar 250 Gig?

I want to add a second drive to my 1,8DP G5 (PCI-X) and I can find available locally this disc:
    WESTERN DIGITAL- WD2500JS
Western Digital 250GB SATA II 7200 RPM 8MB
I wanted to check that nobody had problems with this kind of disk. I'll get it from a PC parts supplier and wanted to know if there is something I'd have to switch or configure to make it works fine in Mac.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello all,
I have a Power G5 dual 2Ghz and have recently bought and installed a second HD. It happened to be a WD Caviar 250 GB, SATA-II, 16MB 7200 rpm, and it only lasted one month: it soon started to make metallic noises (as if the head was falling on the disk) and then crashed.
I first thought the disk was defective so I had it replaced with a new one, same model. As soon as I installed it (upper bay) this second disk also started to have the same problems as the first one and crashed after 4 days.
I was wondering if there is any known incompatibility. In particular, the disk is labelled as SATA-II, while the manual I got with my Power G5 talks about SATA disk: are they the same thing? Or do I have to set some jumpers/switches etc.?
I hope someone can help, I am desperate, I dont't know if my Mac has a problem or I'm just not using the right disks or the correct settings.
Any suggestions on some tests or anything I can try?
    Thanks a lot in advance
    /Andrea

    My bad?
You're original response was questions/post  about an iMac. Now you've edited it to ask about a Mac Pro?
You can more easily add internal drives in a Mac Pro.
Not too terribly easy to add/replace drives in an iMac.
If younhave questions about a Mac Pro, try posting in the Mac Pro forums.
    Much more knowledgeable users there.

I had a 640GB HDD in my Early 2008 Macbook and it was just too much it would always freeze up the computer a bit for only a few seconds but ya. Then I realized that it was the size of the HDD that was causing it since the Early 2008 Macbook models can only handle a MAX od 500GB while the Early 2008 Macbook Pros could have a MAX of 640GB (Lucked out there!) lol But ya the Early 2008 Mocbooks can only handle a MAX HDD size of 500GB and that's it!! lol

  • Western Digital HDD

A supplier, www.datorbutiken.com, supplied this about IDE hard disks from Western Digital:
Western Digitals hårddiskar fungerar ej tillfredställande med moderkort som har nForce2-chipset. Detta fel yttrar sig på Western-diskar med varierande firmware-version, det går därför ej entydigt att peka på specifika modeller. Det kan alltså fungera i vissa fall, men risken att det inte gör det är för stor för att vi skall kunna rekommendera denna kombination. Ovanstående gäller även moderkort med VIA KT133A och 686B chipsets.
Short translation: "Western Digital HDDs does not work very well with..." You see what mobos are concerned. I can't find this info in the SATA section, why it seems to be a IDE problem.

The WDC + VIA 686B compatibility issue is way old and affected only WDC models with particular production or lot codes.  I can't remember for certain now if the solution was a firmware update or replacement from WDC, but I seem to recall that a replacement/exchange was offered by WDC.
Not heard of any problems with NForce 2.

  • X/Four Western Digital 150GB Raptor X 10000RPM SATA/ Internal HD ?

    hope all Mac pro's OK,
i will be grateful if you pros out-there could help out.
after 10 years of MS Windows i made up my mind to get into the real world of Apple/Macx. My new Mac pro is arriving soon with the following configuration:
    *Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon*
    *4GB(4 x 1GB)*
    *250GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s*
    *NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB*
*Both Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and AirPort Extreme*
*Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple wireless Mighty Mouse*
    *Dell,2407 24inch widescreen monitor*
I plan to get X4 Western Digital 150GB Raptor X 10000RPM SATA/Internal HD from Amazon at the below link
    +http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-10000RPM-Internal-WD1500AHFDRTL/dp/B000FBS 01K/ref=pdbbs_sr1/102-6487397-5919346?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1186251321&sr=1-1+
I want to set them-up in Raid 0 configuration and use the first 2 HD for Mac OS X and use the other 2 for MS Windoes XP 32 bit and have the 250GB that comes with the mac pro partitioned in 2 for back-up by OS X & MS XP.
my Question, is this configuration OK on this mac pro and will the x4 150GB Raptor X specs fit the Mac pro.
NOte: this Mac pro is for my personal use.
    Thank you All

Skip the "X" series and stay with the regular model.
Amazon: you don't need anything after the product ID:
    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-10000RPM-Internal-WD1500AHFDRTL/dp/B000FBS 01K
There are usually less expensive places to pick up Raptor.
You might find one Raptor is fine. Even if it is 50% full (max I would go with).
And use the 2nd for "home" directory. Actually faster to split OS/Apps and home.
That way you can update the OS, and leave 'home' intact. Great for backups and restore also, or moving to Leopard later.
You could put Windows on 74GB Raptor and use 500GB drives for data.
The Raptor X is not designed for RAID. The WD1500ADFD is.
    http://www.amazon.com/10000RPM-Buffer-Serial-3-5INCH-Raptor/dp/B000FBLUOE/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD1500ADFD/
I find the WD Caviar SE16 500GB AAKS to be fine, too.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FBSREK/
The Mac Pro is fast. Mostly it depends on use, scratch drives, and drives for media and data.
StorageReview.com has tried to dispel the notion of using RAID boot drive for years. There are some benchmark tests on Macs using RAID vs non, including the Raptor.
    http://www.barefeats.com
But it depends on what you want, use it for, etc. You might want the Radeon X1900, or more memory, or both.
And yes, I spent a month with booting from Raptor RAID. I prefer the Raptor for boot drive. It can be louder, and some people find that unacceptable. The WD RE2 500GB is a good fast and quiet drive for booting (use 1/3 outer partition) or for RAID.

  • Portege M400: Can I install a Western Digital SATA drive?

Can I install a Western Digital SATA drive in my Portege M400?
    I've tried and failed.
I can copy the system resore CD to the new HD but the result is a blue-screen failure when the system boots.
I can't get a clean install of Windows XP to even start -- the HD is not recognised despite using the Toshiba SATA/RAID drivers from a floppy.
I've tried using Norton Ghost to copy an image of the existing (working) HD to the new HD but that also results in a blue-screen failure.
Is there something proprietary about the SATA?
Will the laptop only work with the original HD?
Will a replacement (larger) Toshiba HD work?
    -ne

Power down the notebook and start it pressed ESC key.
On the third bios page (pg down) you find the raid configuration.
I assume you actually have already the RAID setting but it is not really written to the HDD.
At first remove the RAID and change to JOBD the password confirmation 1234.
Save settings und reboot. Enter bios again and change it from JOBD to RAID (again 1234).
After this your HDD will work fine!
