Western Digital Diagnostics with Vista

Hi,
Does anyone know how to get the Western Digital diagnostics software for my N200 hard drive working? They don't provide a Windows Vista version and the DOS CD ISO seems to think it's really a floppy and will only run from drive A:.

What makes you think so? There's a CD ISO there, it burns on the CD perfectly and works great.
Also you may want to try another soft for HDD diagnose - MHDD (FAQ) and Victoria. Those are easy to learn having some skills, but are dangerous if you haven't got the experience or haven't at least read FAQ.

Western Digital: Problems with Time Machine

I have a 1T Western Digital external drive. It is connected Via USB to one of the USB ports on the back of my Mac Pro. It seems to work just fine.
I am running time machine to create a backup on that disk. It has created and continues to update, apparently successfully.
From Finder Info, the file I see on the disk is called monster.sparsebundle. It is 393GB. The path shown on info is /Volumn/ExternalHD
The Permissions read: System: Read&Write, and Everyone Read&Write
Everything looks perfect.
Except that when I try to go to the 'time travel' screen launching the Time Tracel app, NOTHING AT ALL HAPPENS.
I have tried many things to solve the problem, now I am trying to see if it's somehow related to this Western Digital disk.
If you have any theory, however strange, please share it. I am running out of ideas!

Excellent point Linc! Indeed this disk had been attached over the network and I was getting some weird probems and so to simplify things I connected it directly.
A couple of other tidbits that I discovered. If I 'open' that sparsebundle so that it is like a mounted volume, and then disconnect TimeMachine from any disk, then the "Browse other Time Machines" (or whatever the command was) allows me to access that sparsebundle and see it in the 'time travel' display. Just what I had failed to do so far!!
So, what I've done and I think its solving the problem: I deleted the sparsebundle and just re-created the backup (luckily I didn't care about the history) and it is now building the backup on my external disk 'correctly' and I can get into the time travel screen.
Weird. I would definitely call this a bug in TimeMachine albeit a kind of esoteric one! Thanks for the CRUCIAL HINT!

Cannot use Western Digital HDD with Pismo?

Good evening,
I am trying to use a Western Digital Passport 250GB external HDD USB with my Pismo, but it mounts the HDD, but says it is unreadable and then forwards me to the Disk Utility. It seems the HDD but I can't partition it or anything. So, I partitioned it on my G4 iMac, on which it works perfectly, and then removed it and tried to use it on the Pismo; again, no luck! Is this a fool's errand or am I doing something wrong? Please advise as I need more than the 20GB internal HDD.

I am sorry the suggestion did not work but underpowered USB ports on Mac portables is an issue with external USB HDs. You have something else going on which I cannot answer.

The Titanium also has USB 1.1 ports, has issues with USB HDs, and the forum has more activity than the Older Powerbook Computers. Also, if you wish, perform a search in the Titanium forum for 'USB western digital' for many posts. I saw none that matched your experience. When you post, I would explain that you have a Pismo and were sent to this forum for the reasons I mentioned; you can even link to this thread if you wish.

Connecting my western digital drive with airport to use with my idevices

I purchased "my book essiential" i had it reformatted at the apple store to be used by my apple products. Now I have it connected to my "airport extreme base" and I need to establish an access with my book essential using my iPad and my iPhone. At the moment my computer needs repair so I can't do much.
On my idevices, I have Airport Utility app.
i went to edit-advanced-file sharing and Disks.
File sharing -ON.
The utility has the latest update
what else I need to do?

In order to access files on network drives from either an iPhone or the iPad, you would need an app, like FileBrowser, to do so.

Create a regular storage / data drive on a new drive and transfer the files manually from within OS X, not TimeMachine.

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD. Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.

Format External Western Digital Drive to be used with only Mac

I recently ordered Western Digital My Passport Essential. I will get it by tomorrow evening.
It comes pre-formatted using NTFS file-type.
I need to format it, to be used with My MacBook Pro running Lion, and old White MacBook running Snow Leopard. One more thing, I will be using with OS X only. I don't have Windows/Linux system at my place, and I don't have any intention to be using with Windows/Linux in future.
Should I format it using HFS+ or HFS+ Journaled or something else? Why?

but also you might want to partition it rather than just erase the visible partition, i think some of these disks come with annoying hidden partitions and crappy backup software.
If you want to make sure you get the whole drive to yourself, instead of using the erase tab in Disk Utiliity, go to the partition tab, then select 1 partition (or which ever you want from the drop down.) and configure as you see fit. this will make sure that no hidden partitions remain.
You might also want to select GPT as the partition map incase you ever decide to use it to boot OS X from.

How do I fix a configuration problem with my external Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive which used to both read and write. Something has happened so that the drive is now read only? There is 600 GB of data on the drive that I cannot lose, thus am very concerned about messing around with formatting the drive which is raid 1 and filled with data.

never have one backup set. THREE sets of your data, minimum.
3rd party disk maintenance and repair should be a must and given rather than rely solely on Apple Disk Utility.
Data and system maintenance and recovery plan - should be like practice for sports, arts, military with practice and making sure you will know how and the tools you need - ahead of time
Resetting USB/FW ports, try another if one won't work. When 10.6 came out there was a lot of grinding teeth with external drives not working or mounting.

Mac Mini conflict with Western Digital External Drive

My Mac Mini used to work fine with my 2 TB Western Digital external drive, but now when I plug it in my desktop goes blank and the drive won't mount. I have tried it both USB and Firewire. The drive DOES work with my Powerbook G4.

What mini are you using? One of the new 2009 models?
As for the drive, is this a Firewire 800 drive or a Firewire 400 connection?
If it is a firewire connection, are you daisy chained to another firewire device? If so, in what order is the hard disk?
If it is a firewire 400 connection, what adaptor/cable are you using?
For a USB 2.0 connection, are you connected to a hub, or directly to the mini? Is the hub powered or not? Have you tried a different USB port? Same results?
Did you plug in both the USB and Firewire cables at the same time?
What is the model of your WD ext drive?
When you say that your desktop goes "blank" what exactly do you mean? The computer is still on, but there is no image on the screen?
You mention that the drive works with your Powerbook G4. By Firewire? USB?

Ipod with Western Digital 160 gb External Drive

What do I need to do with the Itunes configuration to use the Western Digital External Drive. I have so much music that I want to use the external drive to store all of my music files. The Music Files on my lap top were taking up to much space on my Laptop....I have copied all of my music files onto the External Drive......I am not sure aht to do next.....

To move your iTunes music...
Quit iTunes.
Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
Click on the iTunes icon to start it, then immediately press an hold the Shift key in Windows, Option key in Mac.
iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library and select the library in the folder you just moved.
Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.

Call Apple to purchase replacement discs or order a copy of Snow Leopard from Apple's Online Store. Follow these instructions:
Drive Preparation and Install Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Once you boot from Snow Leopard you should open Software Update and install all the available updates required. After you complete this and restart the computer open the App Store application in the Dock or Applications folder.
8. Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Lion.
9. After Lion's installer downloads, install Lion.

Problems with the WD2GO app from Western Digital

I have a Western Digital Mybooklive and have downloaded the WDPhoto and WD2Go apps.
The WDPhto app works perfectly, however the WD2Go app doesnt.
I have been in discusson with WD and they have put forward numerous suggestions but I have found nothing that works.
They belive the proble is with the Ipad, although I am not convinced.
When I launch the app, I get a Mybooklive icon to sekect.
After selecting the mybooklive I can see all my public shares.
If I click on one I see the next level in the folder structure but after this when I click on a folder the Ipad gives the busy circle and eventaually I get the message
"Device Offline".
If I the come out of the app and go back in I get the "Device offline " message when I click on the Mybooklive icon.
I can get access to the Mybooklive from my andcroid phone both within my own wifi neetwork and using 3G.
So I know that port forwarding on the Mybooklive is working properly as the android phone and router and mybooklive all talk to each other.
Has anyone got a reason why the Ipad has these issues.

Dont buy a Western Digital, get a Hitachi or Seagate (Toshiba is made by Hitachi). These are the most reliable, and the HD used inside Macs.
ALL HD can be made compatible with your MAC (including a WD if you already bought same), ......they just need to be formatted for the Mac platform, format them in Disk Utility as Mac OSX extended journaled.

Macbook with retina display + 500GB western digital hard drive

I have just bought my macbook pro with retina display and I have a Western Digital hard drive that doesnt show up when I plug it in. How can I make this work?

Just an update:
I tried to boot by MacBook into safe mode with the external plugged into the USB port and could never get past the Apple Logo boot screen. I then detached and tried to boot up my MacBook regularly and still nothing.
So today i took my MacBook and WD External Hard Drive into the genius bar (they were super cool), turned out that my MacBook hard drive had dismounted itself so I had to wipe and reinstall (not a big deal, I had everything backed up).
Then they plugged the WD into different machines running 10.6.8, 10.7.1 and 10.7.3 and the External did the same thing with everyone of the machines, proving my intial theory wrong that it was my upgrade to 10.7.3 that caused this problem.
Didn't get a chance to try Paragon's NTFS driver and at this point I'm a little gun shy. The external is still under warranty so I'm going to see if WD will just swap it out for me. Anyways, thanks for the input.
