Western Digital is Eating my Mavericks Hard Drive

Upgraded to Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks.  It has corrupted my Western Digital internal hard drive.  This is not an external drive, which is what WDC is warning about.  Also, I don't have any of the three WD software programs that are mentioned in their warning.  What other problems are Western Digital customers having?
MacBook Pro 13 Inch (Mid 2010)

I currently have a replacement WD drive installed in the MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.5 rebuilt from scratch.  I have the corrupted WD drive connected externally by Corsair SATA to USB cable to salvage data off of the OS X 10.9 drive.  I also have my Time Machine drive attached by Firewire 800.
I have not installed any WD software, either now or in the past.

  • Western Digital My Book 500GB External Hard Drive

    Hello,
Just wondering if anyone is using the Western Digital My Book 500GB External Hard Drive and how do you like it? A few people I know bought this one and say that they like it. One good thing is that it is already Mac compatible.
Any information on this would be great!
    Thanks,
    Simonne

Looks like it will work fine but I'd highly recommend you buy one that has both ext. FW and USB2 (as opposed to usb only).

  • Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" IDE hard drive upgrade soft clicking noise

Just replaced the original hard drive in my 17" Powerbook G4 with a Western Digital Scorpio 250GB 2.5" IDE drive, model WD2500BEVE. I notice a strange noise coming from the drive every minute or two, almost like the drive is going to sleep and waking up. I contacted WD tech support and this was their response:
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. I apologize for the inconvenience. This issue is caused by a system initiated power management command being interpreted incorrectly by the hard drive. The sound is normal and as of yet, we do not have a fix for it.
Not sure if it is a larger issue with all WD 2.5" drives but if you have the noise, you are going to have to live with it or settle for a smaller capacity Seagate or Toshiba drive or hope that WD has a firmware update for MacOSX which is slim to none imo.
Anyone else have this problem or more importantly, are using a WD 2.5" drive and do NOT have this problem?

    dausone:
This is a known issue with these drives, although not all drives have the problem; indeed, I have seen only a few reports from the many people who have installed them. WD is aware of the issue and there is a fix for PC users of this drive, but not for Macs. I suggest that you call WD Tech Support, or Customer Relations and tell them you would like to have the drive replaced.

  • ENCORE CS5.5: Audio Conforming Is Eating Up My Hard Drive

Hi guys. I am using Adobe Encore CS5.5 (Windows 7) for a DVD project. My project is pretty much a series of audio files synch with .PSD images. In other words, I do not use real video. Rather, I Use Images wity audio running in the bagground of the timelines.
Encore keeps conforming (non-stop) the audio files of my project, and it's eating up my hard drive space at lightning speed, say 537GB of free space in like 30 mins or so.
After much research, I found that the Media Cache Files Folder is being loaded with replicas of my audio files with the following extensions .ac3 48000.cfa and .ac3 48000.pek
I use seperate hard drives for both my C: drive (for software) and D: (for my project files files). As I stated above, I have plenty of room in my C drive, but Encore keeps eating up the free space, this, of course, while I have my project running.
I resaved the project with a different name. I even re-installed Encore, and the result is the same: Audio keeps conforming and the Media Cache Folder is loaded. When I empty this folder, I get my HD space back, but the process keeps on going. For those who do not know, the Media Cache Folder can be accessed in Encore from Edit--> Preferences-->General -->Media: Media Cache Files --> Browse or directly from C:/Users/Username/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Common/Media Files, where "Username" is your Computer's User Account name.
This is by Far the most annoying software glitch I have ever seen in my life. I am so frustrated. My project is quite complex and I don't want to start all over again.  Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your reply.
I have 6 timelines. The total program length, as shown in the build tab, is about 3GB used. And it's a DVD project, not BD.
I use MP3 files and I can see the audio keeps conforming from the Progress tab. There's a Stop button, but it's grayed out, so I can't stop it. The setting I am using to transcode is a3c as you mentioned.
The funny thing is that I even deleted the project's audio files from the timelines and Project Assets as well. At this point the audio files don't even exist in my project, and yet the Progress tab shows the audio keeps conforming and my hard drive keeps being swallowed by this monster. That's driving me Nuts!
Originally, and of course, the audio was Untranscoded. I performed the transcoding and yes, PSD images are brought directly as asssets into Encore. I probably should have done this from Premiere, but a) I have never used Premiere, and b) I was just learning how to use Encore by watching some video tutorials.
The thing is that my project was complete and everything was set, including audio conforming. I even outputed a disk image, which I then burned into a DVD. At the time I did this my project was still somewhat small as I just wanted to test the whole process with just a few files. The thing is that at this point I didn't realize what was happening in the background with my hard drive's free space until I later got a Windows warning message of low disk space. And that's when the saga began for me.
Once again, thanks for your help.

  • Something wrong with my email it keep eat up my hard drive.  how can i get into the system and delete the mail folder

how can I delete the mail folder in the hard drive.. it keep redownload the emails and eat up my hard drive

If you have your mail set up as an IMAP account, then it will download everything that is in your Inbox (on the online site/server) again and again. You can move your emails to another folder online after you've read them or you can also delete them online after you've saved the ones you want to keep.
If you have your mail set up as a POP account, emails are downloaded once and then reside on your hard drive; you can indicate in Mail Preferences > Accounts if you want the messages online deleted immediately or after one week, etc.

  • How do I find out what's eating up my hard drive space?

I installed Leopard quite a while back on my 1,8 GHz PowerPC G5 tower. I had to try twice and call Apple support because I was having problems installing it. I never seem to have much hard drive space, and I don't really have much on this computer. My iTunes library takes up a bit of room, but there's really not much else on the hard drive. I cleaned out some old stuff tonight and made some room, but I am wondering how much of my space is eaten up by the previous OS. Also wondering if Leopard is on here twice because of the double install attempt.
I am trying to make room to install Logic Express 8. So where are the OS's on here so I can trash anything extraneous, and is there a way -- other than individually Apple I'ing everything -- to see what's taking up so much space on my hard drive. As you can probably tell, I'm not the most computer literate person. Thanks.

Try a program such as Disk Inventory X or OmniDiskSweeper.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 is rapidly eating up my hard drive!

    Hey all,
So I was working on a video with my trial version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. I originally had 28 GB left on my internal hard drive. After importing a bunch of videos and splicing them together, I noticed that Premiere kept conforming certain videos again and again. I didn't think much of it, because my source files (where I'm saving the .prproj and video files) are on an external terabyte hard drive. When I'm done with my project, I go over to my computer and see that my internal hard drive has suddenly been reduced to 3.1 GB! I have no idea where the other 25 GB has gone.
What exactly does Premiere do when it says it's conforming video?

I'm sure that you already know that you set up your disk locations in project tab. But a lot of people don't realize that in Edit=Preferences Media... you can tell premiere where you want media cache files to go. If all you have is your c drive and 1 external drive, I highly recommend at least one additional drive. Don't use your c drive for anything other than your os and programs..

  • Mac OS X: Mavericks hard drive partion resize?

I had a different partition on my iMac for windows. Since I dont need it anymore I deleted it..
Normaly I can just resize my Macintosh parititon to the full capaticy of my hard drive... since the update I cant.. what now?
Heres a screenshot of my situation: http://puu.sh/5IxTw.png

    Michael,
    First,Back up all important files.Then...
Run Apple Hardware Test from OS X Install Disk #1.
If it reports any problems, believe it and call AppleCare to have MacBook repaired.
If AHT reports "No problems found",I'd recommend an Erase and Install of OS X.
Let us know the outcome either way.

  • Is Leopard eating my Firewire Hard drives?

I've just had the 2nd hard drive in a month that won't mount, and Disk Utilities can't see.

    Hi Peter,
Have you tried using another firewire port on your iMac? Another possibility is the firewire cable itself - do you have another cable you could try? Also, is the 2nd drive the same make and model as the 1st drive? - It could be a problem with the firewire chipset on the drive.
    Jon

  • If I delete all the songs I ripped on my computer for iTunes Match (they are eating up my hard drive space)

  • External hard drive not recognized by Mavericks?

I have a Western Digital My Passbook 500GB external hard drive connected to my MacBook Pro via USB.
It worked fine until I upgraded to Mavericks.  Now it is not recognized at all in my Finder.
When I go to Disk Utility, it finds it and says "not supported".  When I do "disk verify" it says it needs to be repaired.
When I try to repair it, it says it can not.
    What do I do?

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!

  • Error code 36 (problems with external hard drive)

I have just upgraded to Yosemite and am now having major problem with my external western digital hard drive.  I cannot create new folders and when I hit command N I get error code 36.  I also cannot move files from one folder to the next.  When I try to move them I get the error message: "The operation cannot be completed because a file of that name already exists" and that simply isn't true.  None of the files' names exist in the other folder.

Ok, It appears to be the fault of Western Digital.  I ejected the hard drive and then plugged it back in and it said that the drive was broken but I could still read the files and it told me to save the files on another disk and reformat.  So it was just a coincidence that I upgraded to Yosemite at the same time that my external hard drive broke.
