Western Digital My Book Premium Edition - Firewire not Working

Hey there everyone, I thought I would write about my Western Digital My Book experience for two reasons:
1. To see if anyone had any success getting the firewire option to work properly on their Intel based iMac.
2. To deter anyone else from buying this drive if you plan on using firewire.
When I bought the 320GB My Book Premium Edition from Best Buy I thought I had a great product.... why? Because the backup software included was easy to use and manage. I scheduled my first backup in a matter of minutes. As time went on I realized that this thing was just not going to play nice.
After failing to get the Firewire connection to work I decided to contact WD's customer support department to see what they could do.
My first call the Customer Support rep. ended with him saying that there was a known issue with the firewire cables that shipped with the product.
"We'll get one out to you in about 3 - 5 business days."
Well, 10 business days later the cable finally showed up. Plugged it in and I got the same result:
My iMac will simply not recognize the drive when using the firewire option. USB works fine EVERY time but for some weird reason it just will not mount with the firewire.
So, I called WD and they stated that the bad cable that was shipped with my drive more than likely ruined the firewire connections on the drive. So they take down my credit card information and ship me a new drive with RMA instructions.
A week later I get the new drive. Plug it in and guess what, same issue, different drive.
So I called WD support again and they say that the drive they sent me must be defective. Ok, I've almost had enough at this point. I tell the guy on the phone that this new drive they are sending me had better work or all three of these drives will be going back to where they came from.
So here is my suggestion - do not use the 320GB My Book Premium Edition if you plan on using firewire. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is here so I cannot say that this will happen on other systems that do not mirror mine. But be leary.
My brother came over the other day grabbed my so-called bad firewire and plugged in his external drive and it worked flawlessly. Bummer for me.
*A side note:* There is a firmware upgrade on the WD site (Version 1.08a) that is supposed to resolve issues with the firewire unique indentifier. I tried it on both drives and that didn't work either.

You and me both, unfortunately. I'm on my third WD My Book (although I have the 500GB version) and something like my sixth firewire cable. I called their support line last time and the support guy seemed extremely confident that a new firewire cable "will definitely fix my problem", but I'm highly skeptical of it.
Same story though- USB works without a hitch, but both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 don't work. Drives don't show up in Disk Utility or Terminal with any Firewire connection. I've gone through 5-10 hours of Apple phone support to no avail.
The weird thing is that the drive doesn't work on my Rev A. MacBook either. Also, I can't use target disk mode over Firewire between my new 20" iMac and my MacBook (which was previously not a problem with my G5 iMac). At this point I'm getting worried that the original cable fried one or both of my Firewire ports on my iMac and/or my MacBook, although I haven't had the time or devices to test that theory yet. I'm not sure what the prospects of getting a refund for my My Book will be (since it's 6-8 months old since it was working on my G5 iMac for awhile), but it might have to come down to that eventually.

  • Booting from Western Digital My Book Premium Edition External Hard Drive

I have heard that it is not possible to boot up a Mac from a Western Digital My Book Premium Edition (II) external hard drive. Does anyone know if the same goes for a WD My Book Premium Edition drive (I guess it's the one previous to the (II))? I've already tried calling WD, but the support there was useless (the guy had no idea, and just said they don't support such applications).
    Thanks,
    Steve

I don't know if I was reading about Edition I or II, but a member here said it is not Mac bootable. There's lot's of fairly reasonable drives on the market. OWC's FireWire drives are Mac Bootable. USB drives are not.
You can also buy a regular drive and install it in an OWC enclosure. They have the Mac friendly Oxford chipset.

  • Western DIgital My Book Premium 320GB Firewire Problem

I have a WD My Book Premium 320GB hard drive and I have used it before with the firewire port working fine. Now I tried it today and it wont connect. The USB port works, but the firewire does nothing. I have been searching for a solution for this but I havent found a clear answer. Thanks ahead of time. -Angryshoe

OK then. I'd say set up an appointment at your nearest Apple store and have them look at it (typically for free I believe). At the very least, they should be able to diagnose whether or not the problem is with the drive, MacBook, or cable.

  • Time capsule or Western digital my book world Edition? or Synology DS210j

    Hello all and help please.
I have a Macbook pro and the new Apple TV. I am looking for a way to:
    1. Wirelessly backup my Macbook Pro and
    2. Use the device to hold my iTunes library, so I can stream music and films to my Apple TV.
Obviously I have been looking at the Apple Time Capsule 2GB version, but to be honest I'm a little worried about he number of users who have stated the the device has died after a year or so.
I have also been looking at the Western Digital My Book World Edition 2TB Home Network Storage and the Synology DS210j Disk Station - 2 Bay NAS Enclosure and a 2TB hard drive.
But reading different forums, i have read different reports of backing up and accessing music and video using the Western digital and Synology.
Can anyone out there give me any advise - has anyone got any experience of these devices???
At the moment the Western Digital My Book World Edition 2TB Home Network Storage at £186 looks the best value -but will it work to copy my entire itunes library to and stream it through my Apple TV?
Thnaks for your help in advance.

Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to return the WD My Book Drive, and not get another one.

  • HT3275 message: "Your Time Machine backup disk can't be found." Mountain Lion. Western Digital "MY Book" "Home edition"

Intalled Mountain Lion. Now get message: "Time machine backup disk can't be found. Using Western Digital "My Book" "Home Edition"

Wow, I feel really stupid. I spent a couple of days trying to troubleshoot this problem.
    1. Open TM prefs.
    2. Click "Select Disk..."
    3. Select "None" and apply changes.
    4. Click "Select Disk..." Select your disk and apply changes.
*5. When the password prompt appears, MAKE SURE THE NAME IS THE NAME OF THE AIRPORT BASESTATION, and not the name of your Mac.
    6. Run a backup.

  • Western Digital My Book Home Edition auto spin down?

Hello - I am looking to purchase a Western Digital My Book Home Edition 1TB USB hard drive to connect to my Time Capsule. Can someone who owns this model tell me whether or not the drive will spin down automatically when connected to the Time Capsule?
    Thank you in advance.

Yes, but the spin-down is set to a ridiculously short time frame (10 mins or less) and cannot be changed. Highly irritating

  • Western Digital My Book Studio Edition in the Irish/UK store

    hi,
My question actually concerns a product in the apple store but since it is related to firewire devices for Expanding my Intel-based iMac I thought it best to try here.
Has anybody used the Irish or UK online Apple store to buy a Western Digital 1TB — or TB - My Book Studio Edition in the last week or two.
Can you tell me if the item that is pictured on the product page — http://store.apple.com/ie/product/TP441VC/A?mco=MTQzMDYxNDY — is the actual style of the hard drive that you received or if the actual hard drive is the newer version of the My Book Studio with an LCD ' Smart display 'screen on the front — http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=756.
    Cheers.

The latter one with the screen is the higher end Studio Elite.
WD have several models, I believe there Elements at the basic end of the market, MyBook Studio and MyBook Studio Elite.
If you search around the net though, you can get these drives and other similar 1TB a lot cheaper than there charging on the apple store.

  • Western Digital My Book World Edition Network Hard Drive

    Hi All,
Does anyone know if one of these network drives will work with the Mac OS? I am setting up a Digital Photo lab at my school and would like one place where all students can store their files. We have 21 of the new iMacs i this lab .Also, can I format the drive as a Mac OS Extended drive?
    Thanks,
    Ben

I've just purchased a 1TB My Book World Edition and went through the installation process on a Windows machine. I can see the PUBLIC connection from >Go>Network.
I can't log on selecting the SMB/CIFS shared volume because I don't know how to Authenticate it. I have made an account or passwork for this? Or have I? Or is there a factory default?
I've installed and I'm running WD Anywhere Backup successfully. So I have almost all the functionality I wanted except.
I want to use Time Capsule. Presently, the 12" PowerBook is the only Leopard machine on the network, the MacBook Pro is still Tiger because I run ProTools and don't want to upgrade until the beta upgrade is stable.
When I try and use the Shared Storage Manager via http://192.168.2.9 because, again, I do not know the username and password.
I do want to use the ability to be able to access this drive remotely, via the internet, so do I have to make a VPN? Is so, do I have to purchase a product such a DigiTunnel or VPN Tracker? Which one do you recommend?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

  • Airport Express and Western Digital My Book World Edition

Hi all, first time poster long time lurker
I've just bought a WD My book world edition 1tb (the white one) and simply cannot get it to work with my current set up.
I've got a mac book pro & Maci mini. Internet comes via an Airport Express plugged into a netgear adsl router dg834 v2 which gets it's IP address via DCHP from my wife's firm
I followed the set up instructions but neither computer can see the My Book.
However if I plug the Mac into the router it can see it, ditto if I plug the My Book directly into the Mac Book's either net port.
So why can't it see it over the airport, when the two computers can both see each other?
Confused by the whole thing, and any help or advice would be most greatfully recieved...
    Many thanks
    Andrew

    Welcome to the discussions, eyedropper!
So why can't it see it over the airport, when the two computers can both see each other?
The AirPort Express will only support a compatible printer. It does not support a hard drive at the USB port. You'll need an AirPort Extreme for that. Check this Apple document to confirm and verify:

  • Western Digital: My Book Studio Edition 2

I've bought WD My Book Studio Edition 2. I need to ask that should I install the WD software(s) off provided CD for backing up my Mac?... OR... Time Machine is all I need for backing up my Mac WITHOUT installing WD software(s)?
    Thanks.

As far as I have tested, I don't think you can use it in "JBOD" mode.
Also I think JBOD isn't the accurate term for the scenario you've described as "1 volume per drive". With "real JBOD", the RAID controller combines the spaces on all "physical drives" and only presents the OS with 1 single drive. You could split that single drive equally into 2 volumes with DiskUtil but that wouldn't guarantee the data being split equally onto the 2 "physical drives".
I found this limitation of being able to use only RAID0&1 little disappointing because that means you could either have a protected volume at the size of only 1TB, or a risky volume at 2TB knowing you could suddenly lose ALL of that data...
We certainly need something in between, I hope there might be a firmware update to make this possible.

    Hello TJ1982,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your external hard drive.  I found an article with steps you can take when an external device is not being recognized.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:
