Western Digital My Book Pro Problem

I have a new My Book Pro 500GB hard drive attached to my iMac, connected through the firewire 800 sockets. The drive has been reformated as Mac OS Journaled. On waking the iMac from sleep, the hard drive has dis-mounted and there is an error message warning that the drive wasn't put away properly.
Has anyone had the same problem and solved it?

Hello GeeJay
You should eject/unmount the external before sleeping from the drop down menu as that sleeps both the display and computer.....

You should also be able to unmount the MyBook drive by pressing the big button on the front. If this doesn't work for you, you may need to download and install the driver from WD. There was a version of it already on the MyBook when you first used it but i) it would have been the Windows version and b) you have since reformatted of course. It's easy enough to download it again from WD though.

  • Western Digital My Book Pro 250GB

I am thinking of getting an external hard drive for backup purposes, and I'm liking this hard drive a lot. Triple interface and auto power-off seem like big bonuses to me. I was wondering if:
    a) Anybody else using this drive? Any problems? Or just seamless?
    b) Is there anything else I should be looking at?

    Adam,
My MyBook Pro 500Gb has been entirely trouble-free for me. It's a little noiser than I was expecting this fanless drive to be (I cannot hear my WD 320Gb internal unless I really strain) but much quiter than my previous external box.
I've seen a few concerning posts (link) on these forums though so have a read of them, but there don't seem to be any more than any other brand of drive attracts.

Anyone got one of these external drives? Are they good?

I have the 350GB My Book Premium Edition
Has USB and both FireWire connections. I use it to back up my aging iMac and my new MacBook. You cannot have both connected at the same time however. I schedule regular backups using Backup app. (only works if you have a .Mac account), otherwise I keep it turned off when not in use.
They are getting cheaper by the week also. I got mine at Circuit City for $189 w/ $50 rebate that took an amazing 3 weeks (not 6-8) to arrive. I've seen the 500GB one advertised for around this price, but it's probably only the usb interface version.
It's completely unobtrusive sitting on the desk, and does indeed look like a "book" on a shelf.
The Backup Gods will eventually catch up with you if you do not backup as either habit or at least once a year! These mega GB external hdd's are a great bargain. Data recovery costs start at about a grand.
If you are going to be using it as your main drive, I cannot attest to it's durablility. I use mine strictly for backups.
    Hope this helps

  • Western Digital My Book Pro Edition_ Is Reformat Necessary 10.4.10

Not familiar with external drives. My mac is not partitioned. One thing I don't understand in the reformatting instructions and need some guidance on (if I need to reformat) is this: "You will see several options for setting up the drive. Once you have selected the number of partitions, the format type you want, and a volume label, click the Partition button." Assume I will not be partitioning, not sure if I have to name a Volume, and need guidance on format type. Not using Retrospect. Disk does mount on desktop. Quick Start Guide first page notes compatibility with Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later. There is a notation in the Installing the Drive Section of the quick install guide: "Mac OS X 10.2.8 is not compatibile with FAT32 partitions greater than 127 GB ..." Does this mean that with 10.4.10 it is not necessary to reformat? External drive is to save photos, music, some videos, home folder, etc., --personal use.

You must go through the partition process at least the first time the drive is prepped. You can create one or more partitions at your option. If you don't want more than one then select one. Here's how:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. (No SMART information is reported on external drives.) Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

I also had problem accessing my WD MyBookLive after upgrading to Maverick.
To resolve the problem, I used  Connect To Server (Cmd K) to specify the IP address.
Then I enter a user id and password I created in the MyBookLive.
You can also verify that you have admin access to the MyBookLive using Safari or Chrome.
Just enter the MyBookLive IP address as the URL.

  • Configuration problem with external Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive

How do I fix a configuration problem with my external Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive which used to both read and write. Something has happened so that the drive is now read only? There is 600 GB of data on the drive that I cannot lose, thus am very concerned about messing around with formatting the drive which is raid 1 and filled with data.

may not like to hear, but I'd skip on MyBook cases, nice looking as they are.
Get a 2nd drive case to recover to.

may need to play with the demo Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft
Backup/recover before repair is usually in order
never have one backup set. THREE sets of your data, minimum.
3rd party disk maintenance and repair should be a must and given rather than rely solely on Apple Disk Utility.
Data and system maintenance and recovery plan - should be like practice for sports, arts, military with practice and making sure you will know how and the tools you need - ahead of time
Resetting USB/FW ports, try another if one won't work. When 10.6 came out there was a lot of grinding teeth with external drives not working or mounting.

  • Western digital my book problem

    Hi,
I am using a Macbook pro mid 2010 with 10.8.5 for the past year I have had a 1 tb western digital my book work as my time machine and storage drive. I partitioned the external hard drive. However, about two weeks ago the time machines stopped working. it failed the back up and all my back ups till then were deleted. i reformatted that partition and tried to create a new Time Machine but its giving the "an error ocurred while creating the backup folder." On the Time machine partition their is a folder called "Backups.backupdb" inside it is a folder with the mac books name on it. Insde that folder is a file called "2013-07-29-234258.InProgress" I can't delete that folder nor any of the files. i also can't reformat the partition because of it can't unmount error.
The second issue with the harddrive (might not be related to the time machine) is in my storage partition. I can copy and save files on it, however i can't delete stuff from it. When I try to delete a folder, it goes to the trash, however i can't empty the trash becasue of either a -8072 or a -50 error. I also can not eject the hard drive because files are in use. I am assuming that the files are those in the trash which cannot be emptied. I cannot move the files from the trash back to the partition because of a error code 50. However, I can copy them to my macbooks hard drive.
At this point is there any solution? or any way to force the hard drive to be deleted. i have already backed up all important files so I feel safe in wiping out my hard driving and starting anew.
    Thank you

  • Western Digital My Book Live iTunes files missing

I have a Western Digital My Book Live in which I keep my iTunes Library on. Last night we watched a movie on Apple TV streeming from iTunes. When I got up this morning to connect to itunes on the computer it said "iTunes Library cannot be found" So I went to the Western Digital My Book Live drive to select the Library. To my surprize there was nothing in the iTunes folder. The drive says that 1.2TB are used and my iTunes Library is about 800GB so the files should be there as no one has deleated them.
If anyone has any idea of what caused this of how the fix it please help. This is a lot of info to loose.

  • Anyone have a WESTERN DIGITAL My Book HD??`

    Hey guys,
Western Digital My Book 500GB Pro Edition External Hard Drive
I havent heard much about it, but i want to get it cos:
    1) its cheaper than most
    2) its looks bloody cool
    3) it has firewire 800, 400 and USB
    4) it comes with all the cables
Anyone got one, or used to have one who can tell me if its worth the buy??
    Cheers,
    23rd Child

Yep I have the very same.
So far my only minor complaint/niggle is that despite the fact that it is fanless it is significantly louder than my 320Gb WD internal drive. I paid £169 for mine from Amazon Marketplace. Please don't tell me you found it cheaper 'cos it's only ten days old.
I've not tried out the USB2 connectivity yet (nor the FW800 as I don't have a suitable Mac...yet..).
    regards

Grrr...In the words of Victor Meldrew: I don't believe it. 10 days on and it's only dropped to £140.

  • Western Digital My Book

I have a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 250g that worked fine with my IMAC until
last week. Now, though, neither my IMAC or my Macbook reads the external drive at all. I do have
downloaded the new Drive Manager, but that didn't do anything. Any ideas out there?

No specific idea since your drive worked previously with the same system.
FWIW, though, I use two WD320GB MyBooks with no problems, even waking for a 1am backup. When setting up my new system (this is my first iMac), I did have some problems waking those drives. I replaced my cheapo $6 USB hub with a $30 Belkin and those problems went away even without external power to the hub.
I have had the occasional "hang" on waking. The last time, the only difference with the system was 1) my wife was also logged in, and 2) a WD 120GB Passport was attached. I suspect the problem was related to the Passport, but haven't checked into it.

  • Files not deleting on Western Digital My Book Mac

    Hello,
I recently deleted some time machine backups on my western digital my book mac. Unfortunately these files was not been deleted from the drive (the remaining disk space has not gone up circa 300GB). I have looked online and the issues seems to be the afp connection rather than using the smb connection.
I have reconnected using this type, but I am still unable to see the files to delete. I have tried to connect using terminal, but to be honest I have no idea what I am doing. The file path is smb://WubberTimeCapsule.smb.tcp.local/My%20Book...
Has anybody else seem this problem also, does anybody know of a way of deleting these files?

    leedern wrote:
Thanks, it is an external hdd (Western Digital My Book Mac) connected to my old time machine (too small to fit everything on way) via the usb cable. The time machine is connected wirelessly to my network. Unfortunately I can not see the sparse bundle files anymore.
Just for the sake of clarification, that's a +Time Capsule,+ Apple hardware combining a wireless router and hard drive. +Time Machine+ is the Apple software that does backups, to various destinations, including +Time Capsules.+
This originated because I originally created the time machine backup with the external hdd connected directly to the mac. When I transferred the disk to the old time machine, it did not reuse the previous backup but created a new one. Hence in my ignorance I deleted the old files.
Ah, yes, that's a different critter. Time Machine stores backups differently when they're done directly vs. over a network. The backups done directly were stored in a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of the drive; the ones done over your network have that folder placed inside an odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ You cannot switch back and forth.
Which ones did you delete, and how?
It sounds like you deleted the Backups.backupdb folder, and didn't empty the trash, so they're still in the (hidden) trash folder on that drive. If so, disconnect it from your TC via +Airport Utility > Disks,+ connect it to your Mac, and empty the trash. That will take a very long time, as there are at least a few hundred thousand files there, perhaps many more.
A quick alternative would be to simply erase the drive, via Disk Utility, while it's connected to your Mac. That will erase all the new and old backups. If you just started the new set, that might be easiest.
If you decide to do that, see the green box in #Q2 of [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Capsule+ forum), for a way to speed up the first full backup.

  • Cannot Erase/Format External Western Digital "My Book" Hard Drive

I have a brand new Western Digital "My Book" Hard Drive that I would like to use for SuperDuper clone backup. I am attempting to format the disk for Mac-OS Extended first.
When I connect the HD to my MBP via USB, an error message pops up saying "Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I then enter Disk Utility. The Western Digital HD is shown in the left pane as a 596.2 GB External Media. The Volume Format is shown as MS-DOS (FAT).
I attempted to erase/format for Mac-OS Extended (Journaled). Selecting the volume in the left pane and then clicking erase returns the error message "Disk Erase Failed with the error: File System Formatter Failed." Just for kicks I tried to erase/format for regular Mac-OS Extended, same result. It will let me erase/format for MS-DOS (FAT), but that's how it's already formatted and doesn't help me.
I tried to erase/format on my wife's MBP, exact same results. Am I doing something wrong or do I have a problem with the external hard drive?
    Any help appreciated.

    Barry

  • Western Digital My Book Premium Edition - Firewire not Working

Hey there everyone, I thought I would write about my Western Digital My Book experience for two reasons:
    1. To see if anyone had any success getting the firewire option to work properly on their Intel based iMac.
    2. To deter anyone else from buying this drive if you plan on using firewire.
When I bought the 320GB My Book Premium Edition from Best Buy I thought I had a great product.... why? Because the backup software included was easy to use and manage. I scheduled my first backup in a matter of minutes. As time went on I realized that this thing was just not going to play nice.
After failing to get the Firewire connection to work I decided to contact WD's customer support department to see what they could do.
My first call the Customer Support rep. ended with him saying that there was a known issue with the firewire cables that shipped with the product.
"We'll get one out to you in about 3 - 5 business days."
Well, 10 business days later the cable finally showed up. Plugged it in and I got the same result:
My iMac will simply not recognize the drive when using the firewire option. USB works fine EVERY time but for some weird reason it just will not mount with the firewire.
So, I called WD and they stated that the bad cable that was shipped with my drive more than likely ruined the firewire connections on the drive. So they take down my credit card information and ship me a new drive with RMA instructions.
A week later I get the new drive. Plug it in and guess what, same issue, different drive.
So I called WD support again and they say that the drive they sent me must be defective. Ok, I've almost had enough at this point. I tell the guy on the phone that this new drive they are sending me had better work or all three of these drives will be going back to where they came from.
So here is my suggestion - do not use the 320GB My Book Premium Edition if you plan on using firewire. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is here so I cannot say that this will happen on other systems that do not mirror mine. But be leary.
My brother came over the other day grabbed my so-called bad firewire and plugged in his external drive and it worked flawlessly. Bummer for me.
*A side note:* There is a firmware upgrade on the WD site (Version 1.08a) that is supposed to resolve issues with the firewire unique indentifier. I tried it on both drives and that didn't work either.

You and me both, unfortunately. I'm on my third WD My Book (although I have the 500GB version) and something like my sixth firewire cable. I called their support line last time and the support guy seemed extremely confident that a new firewire cable "will definitely fix my problem", but I'm highly skeptical of it.
Same story though- USB works without a hitch, but both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 don't work. Drives don't show up in Disk Utility or Terminal with any Firewire connection. I've gone through 5-10 hours of Apple phone support to no avail.
The weird thing is that the drive doesn't work on my Rev A. MacBook either. Also, I can't use target disk mode over Firewire between my new 20" iMac and my MacBook (which was previously not a problem with my G5 iMac). At this point I'm getting worried that the original cable fried one or both of my Firewire ports on my iMac and/or my MacBook, although I haven't had the time or devices to test that theory yet. I'm not sure what the prospects of getting a refund for my My Book will be (since it's 6-8 months old since it was working on my G5 iMac for awhile), but it might have to come down to that eventually.

  • Western Digital My Book Essential

My MacBook Pro does not recognize my Western Digital My Book Essential (WDBACW0010HBK) and WD support says: "This drive relies on a driver that is built into this version of MacOSX. If Mac OSX is unable to detect the drive, it is likely the driver has become corrupted or the drive has been physically damaged. Please contact Apple for assistance in diagnosing your operating system before replacing the drive."
    Thoughts on "next steps?"

Return the WD thingy and get a reliable ext HD. Note that WD's ext HDs don't play well with Macs and I wouldn't have one. Alternatively, erase and reformat the WD thing, don't install its software, ahd try again. Last step is to Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.
