Western Digital My Book Pro - WDBMService Crash
Anyone having trouble with the My Book Button Manager Service crashing after upgrading to Leopard? Doesn't seem to impact the operation of the drive but I keep on getting crash reports.
I haven't seen any Leopard updates on the Western Digital site.
thanks in advance,
Alan

Western Digital My Book Pro Problem
I have a new My Book Pro 500GB hard drive attached to my iMac, connected through the firewire 800 sockets. The drive has been reformated as Mac OS Journaled. On waking the iMac from sleep, the hard drive has dis-mounted and there is an error message warning that the drive wasn't put away properly.
Has anyone had the same problem and solved it?den.thed wrote:
Hello GeeJay
You should eject/unmount the external before sleeping from the drop down menu as that sleeps both the display and computer.....
Dennis
You should also be able to unmount the MyBook drive by pressing the big button on the front. If this doesn't work for you, you may need to download and install the driver from WD. There was a version of it already on the MyBook when you first used it but i) it would have been the Windows version and b) you have since reformatted of course. It's easy enough to download it again from WD though.

Anyone got one of these external drives? Are they good?
imac G5 20; 1gig RAM; 300HD; airport; bluetooth keyboard & mouse; bose companion Mac OS X (10.4.9)I have the 350GB My Book Premium Edition
Has USB and both FireWire connections. I use it to back up my aging iMac and my new MacBook. You cannot have both connected at the same time however. I schedule regular backups using Backup app. (only works if you have a .Mac account), otherwise I keep it turned off when not in use.
They are getting cheaper by the week also. I got mine at Circuit City for $189 w/ $50 rebate that took an amazing 3 weeks (not 6-8) to arrive. I've seen the 500GB one advertised for around this price, but it's probably only the usb interface version.
It's completely unobtrusive sitting on the desk, and does indeed look like a "book" on a shelf.
The Backup Gods will eventually catch up with you if you do not backup as either habit or at least once a year! These mega GB external hdd's are a great bargain. Data recovery costs start at about a grand.
If you are going to be using it as your main drive, I cannot attest to it's durablility. I use mine strictly for backups.
Hope this helps

Western Digital My Book Pro 250GB
I am thinking of getting an external hard drive for backup purposes, and I'm liking this hard drive a lot. Triple interface and auto power-off seem like big bonuses to me. I was wondering if:
a) Anybody else using this drive? Any problems? Or just seamless?
b) Is there anything else I should be looking at?Adam,
My MyBook Pro 500Gb has been entirely trouble-free for me. It's a little noiser than I was expecting this fanless drive to be (I cannot hear my WD 320Gb internal unless I really strain) but much quiter than my previous external box.
I've seen a few concerning posts (link) on these forums though so have a read of them, but there don't seem to be any more than any other brand of drive attracts.

Western Digital My Book Pro Edition_ Is Reformat Necessary 10.4.10
Not familiar with external drives. My mac is not partitioned. One thing I don't understand in the reformatting instructions and need some guidance on (if I need to reformat) is this: "You will see several options for setting up the drive. Once you have selected the number of partitions, the format type you want, and a volume label, click the Partition button." Assume I will not be partitioning, not sure if I have to name a Volume, and need guidance on format type. Not using Retrospect. Disk does mount on desktop. Quick Start Guide first page notes compatibility with Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later. There is a notation in the Installing the Drive Section of the quick install guide: "Mac OS X 10.2.8 is not compatibile with FAT32 partitions greater than 127 GB ..." Does this mean that with 10.4.10 it is not necessary to reformat? External drive is to save photos, music, some videos, home folder, etc., --personal use.

Flat Panel iMac 15" LCD Mac OS X (10.4.10) 800MHz Power PC G4 256<BSDRAM 56K</span>You must go through the partition process at least the first time the drive is prepped. You can create one or more partitions at your option. If you don't want more than one then select one. Here's how:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select the external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. (No SMART information is reported on external drives.) Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive. -
IMac crashes while making backup with TimeMachine to Western Digital My Book World
When I try to make a back up with TimeMachine to my Western Digital My Book World Edition II, after some time I get a kernel panic and everything freezes. This happens while the back up-process is well under way. Finding the back up disk and preparinf the bak up takes quite some time (more than 20 min.)
I have updated the WD tot tthe newest firmware v. 1.02.12) and all Mac-updates are up tot date as well.
Any clues are greatly appreciated.
Regards,Followed the directions on this page and it worked!

Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
[1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
[3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
[8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
Code:
ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
Code:
wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
Code:
sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine. -
Anyone have a WESTERN DIGITAL My Book HD??`
Hey guys,
Western Digital My Book 500GB Pro Edition External Hard Drive
I havent heard much about it, but i want to get it cos:
1) its cheaper than most
2) its looks bloody cool
3) it has firewire 800, 400 and USB
4) it comes with all the cables
Anyone got one, or used to have one who can tell me if its worth the buy??
Cheers,
23rd ChildYep I have the very same.
So far my only minor complaint/niggle is that despite the fact that it is fanless it is significantly louder than my 320Gb WD internal drive. I paid £169 for mine from Amazon Marketplace. Please don't tell me you found it cheaper 'cos it's only ten days old.
I've not tried out the USB2 connectivity yet (nor the FW800 as I don't have a suitable Mac...yet..).
regards

Grrr...In the words of Victor Meldrew: I don't believe it. 10 days on and it's only dropped to £140. -
Western digital my book problem
Hi,
I am using a Macbook pro mid 2010 with 10.8.5 for the past year I have had a 1 tb western digital my book work as my time machine and storage drive. I partitioned the external hard drive. However, about two weeks ago the time machines stopped working. it failed the back up and all my back ups till then were deleted. i reformatted that partition and tried to create a new Time Machine but its giving the "an error ocurred while creating the backup folder." On the Time machine partition their is a folder called "Backups.backupdb" inside it is a folder with the mac books name on it. Insde that folder is a file called "2013-07-29-234258.InProgress" I can't delete that folder nor any of the files. i also can't reformat the partition because of it can't unmount error.
The second issue with the harddrive (might not be related to the time machine) is in my storage partition. I can copy and save files on it, however i can't delete stuff from it. When I try to delete a folder, it goes to the trash, however i can't empty the trash becasue of either a -8072 or a -50 error. I also can not eject the hard drive because files are in use. I am assuming that the files are those in the trash which cannot be emptied. I cannot move the files from the trash back to the partition because of a error code 50. However, I can copy them to my macbooks hard drive.
At this point is there any solution? or any way to force the hard drive to be deleted. i have already backed up all important files so I feel safe in wiping out my hard driving and starting anew.
Thank youhttp://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html

Western Digital My Book Essential
My MacBook Pro does not recognize my Western Digital My Book Essential (WDBACW0010HBK) and WD support says: "This drive relies on a driver that is built into this version of MacOSX. If Mac OSX is unable to detect the drive, it is likely the driver has become corrupted or the drive has been physically damaged. Please contact Apple for assistance in diagnosing your operating system before replacing the drive."
Thoughts on "next steps?"Return the WD thingy and get a reliable ext HD. Note that WD's ext HDs don't play well with Macs and I wouldn't have one. Alternatively, erase and reformat the WD thing, don't install its software, ahd try again. Last step is to Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

Western Digital My Book Advice
I am thinking about getting the WD My Book Pro Edition/500 GB Triple Interface.
http://wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=242&language=en
1. Does anyone know if the Western Digital My Book is bootable?
(On a side note, what makes an external hard drive not bootable? Does it have something to do with the interface?)
2. On Western Digital's Web site, the product is listed with a three year warranty and the part number is WDG1T5000. But when I checked on the Apple Store Web site (and even Amazon.com and BestBuy.com), it lists the warranty as "one" year and the part number is different by one letter (WDG1T5000N).
Has anyone come across this discrepancy? Maybe these are two different drives. I cannot seem to get a straight answer from Western Digital tech support. I don't know if the local Apple Store knows the answer.
Thanks.
PowerMac G5/Dual 2.0 GHz Mac OS X (10.3.7)
PowerMac G5/Dual 2.0 GHz Mac OS X (10.3.7)The Western Digital Tech said it uses the NEC chipset. (Is the term chipset the same as bridge)? I take it then it depends on what kind of chipset is being used that would dictate if an external FW drive is bootable, no?
I am not familiar with NEC stuff. I wonder how it compares to the oxford chip. Any thoughts on this?
As for an FW400/800 enclosure. I keep debating about getting one since I have never used one before. Is it pretty much plug and play?
If one were to use an enclosure as part of a backup scheme, how does one store a full drive after removing if from the enclosure? Are there storage cases of some kind or is it the static bag deal? How long can you generally store a drive?

Time capsule or Western digital my book world Edition? or Synology DS210j
Hello all and help please.
I have a Macbook pro and the new Apple TV. I am looking for a way to:
1. Wirelessly backup my Macbook Pro and
2. Use the device to hold my iTunes library, so I can stream music and films to my Apple TV.
Obviously I have been looking at the Apple Time Capsule 2GB version, but to be honest I'm a little worried about he number of users who have stated the the device has died after a year or so.
I have also been looking at the Western Digital My Book World Edition 2TB Home Network Storage and the Synology DS210j Disk Station - 2 Bay NAS Enclosure and a 2TB hard drive.
But reading different forums, i have read different reports of backing up and accessing music and video using the Western digital and Synology.
Can anyone out there give me any advise - has anyone got any experience of these devices???
At the moment the Western Digital My Book World Edition 2TB Home Network Storage at £186 looks the best value -but will it work to copy my entire itunes library to and stream it through my Apple TV?
Thnaks for your help in advance. Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to return the WD My Book Drive, and not get another one.

Airport Extreme 802.11n & Western Digital (My Book Essential 1TB)
I just bought a Airport Extreme 2days ago. I am trying to connect to my external HDD which is Western Digital, My book Essential, 1TB. But I just could not see the HDD on my laptop. The HDD is detected by the the airport utility and shows 930.9GB WD My Book 1110 1032. I have enable file sharing on the device as well. But i just could not see the HDD. I have tried connecting my both laptops wirelessly & using EtherNet Cable, for both options, the HDD is still not visible. Please help me
Details as below,
Airport Extreme with firmware version 7.5.1
Airport Utility, version 5.5.1
All systems at home are Windows XP with Service Pack 3
Internet Type: Cable
HDD details
Brand & Model: Western Digital, My Book Essential, 1TB
Format : NTFS
Network description, Cable modem -> AE -> HDD into the USB of the AE
All laptop are on wireless.
I have called up the apple support helpdesk, which they ask me to hold on, but the line was cut off, and no one actually call me back.
I badly need help to get this working..I have the same WD drive on my Airport. In the Airport utility, I have checked the "Enable File Sharing" box. I have selected to share with my Airport Extreme password. Further down the page, the workgroup box is filled in as "WORKGROUP" - I did not have to do this, the Airport seems to have detected it. If you have nothing there, you might want to fill it in.
On the PC, with File Explorer, expand the tree My Network Places:Entire Network:Microsoft Windows Network:Workgroup. The Airport shows up here. When I click it, I get a prompt for username and password. I use the info from the PC that I use to manage the airport. Then My Book shows up and I can browse it. -

Western Digital My Book Studio II external hard drive won't mount on Mountain Lion
I have the Western Digital My Book Studio II external hard drive. It was working fine. After upgrading to Mountain Lion, the disk does not mount. I can't find any help on the Western Digital site. Has anyone else run into this? Is there a solution?
Immediately, I'm more concerned about getting the data off this drive than getting it to work. If I take it to an Apple Store with another external drive, could they transfer the data to it for me?Also, check the Western Digital website for software updates. They have made numerous updates recently.
