Western Digital Thunderbolt Duo 8 TB !!!

I'm not sure if this is the right communities to ask but there go...
Just bought a Western Digital ThunderBolt Duo 8TB , the problem is...i cant seems to connect it to 2 mac book pro at the same time. Contacted WD support, they told me it's not possible...but apple support told me it can be done in a unique way ?!?!?!?
Something that requires MBPR B to reboot and push the T button to direct it to MBPR A which is connected to the thunderbolt storage , its like so confusing...is there any guide somewhere here ??
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Add Guest to "Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies-> User Rights Assignment -> Access this computer from the network"
Roger, that only applies to incoming connections. This thread is talking
about outgoing connections to a non-Windows device so this will have no
impact on the problem.

  • OS X MAVERICKS 10.9.1, Late 2013 iMac i7 and Western Digital 4TB  My Book Live Duo External Drive

How do I properly configure the external hard drive and Time Machine (TM) to be sure that TM backup are performed properly and the backups can be used to either restore my iMac fully or certain files can be restored in the future, if required.
I would like to know the drivers and software I need to install on the iMac to support the external hard drive, step by step instructions for correctly setting up the external drive would be useful.  Should I use the external drive as RAID 0 ( the drive is actually two-2TB drives in a case), or use its 4TB capacity without RAID?
Additionally, is there a way to test the restoration of files from the external drive to the iMac.  I do not want to render the iMac to an unusable state.

Be aware that Western Digital drives have had issues with Mavericks. http://wd-mavericks-data-loss.com/#!
I would format using Apple's Disk Utility rather than the drive software.

  • Western Digital drives lose directory in Mavericks

I was just informed by Western Digital that there is an incompatibility between their drives and Mavericks!   I connected my MY Book Thunderbolt Duo and found that both drives showed up on my Desktop without any data.   WD advised of the Mavericks difficulty and connected me with a recovery service for the data that is hidden on the drive.  Still, it entails purchasing another 4TB drive to recover the data to.  Isn't the whole point to having a RAID drive??
Any other options would be appreciated while I wait for the new drive to arrive.
I can't help but wonder if the 10.9.1 release of Mavericks will address this issue and whether the best thing to do would be to wait.

    Thank you.
Your thoughts and even John's (10.9.1 will probably not offer a solution) were appreciated.   That said, I along with others are looking for a solution not a should have or could have.  If you read the other posts Seagate, LaCie and other drives are being affected.
As noted, WD has offered a solution but it required the purchase of another 4Tb drive.
Your comment regarding RAID gave me pause since I was under the impression that it provided some file security because it duplicates one drive onto the other.  Surprise ... it is for effeciency (you already knew that).  So, once this is resolved, I will be taking off the Raid function and using one as the backup drive for the other using either SuperDuper or some other program.   The RAID drive contained a lot of photos and music filling almost 2.5 TB and took a long time to accumulate.
I do use TM with a TC and another HD to backup my computer.  Thought the RAID was doing that for my data.
Back to looking for other options before the new HD arrives.

  • Western Digital is Eating my Mavericks Hard Drive

Upgraded to Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks.  It has corrupted my Western Digital internal hard drive.  This is not an external drive, which is what WDC is warning about.  Also, I don't have any of the three WD software programs that are mentioned in their warning.  What other problems are Western Digital customers having?
MacBook Pro 13 Inch (Mid 2010)

I currently have a replacement WD drive installed in the MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.5 rebuilt from scratch.  I have the corrupted WD drive connected externally by Corsair SATA to USB cable to salvage data off of the OS X 10.9 drive.  I also have my Time Machine drive attached by Firewire 800.
I have not installed any WD software, either now or in the past.

  • Cannot boot from 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Black

I just installed a new 750GB 7200rpm Western Digital Scorpio Black in my early 2008 15" MacBook Pro (last pre-unibody). I can boot the computer from the Scorpio Black when it's in an external enclosure, I can boot another computer, a MacBook, from the Scorpio Black via firewire while that's installed in my MacBook Pro, but what I cannot do is get the MacBook Pro to boot off the Scorpio Black as the internal drive. It will recognize it and show the main and recovery partititions, but it won't boot the OS (10.7.1.).
Here's a rundown of the installation and troubleshooting steps I've taken:
1.) Installed the drive in an external USB enclosure, formatted GUID partition table (GPT), file system HFS+ extended journaled.
1.b) Downloaded and installed Lion (10.7.1) from the App Store, used migration assistant to transfer accounts from my (now former) internal drive, and then booted from the Scorpio Black in the external enclosure to ensure everything worked fine.
2.) Installed the drive via iFixit instructions. Everything fit properly and I double checked the SATA connector was seated correctly.
3.) Booted computer for the first time with the Scorpio Black. It stuck at a spinning wheel on a grey screen.
4.) Held down option key at startup -- the computer showed the main partition and the recovery partition on the Scorpio Black as the startup drive options.
5.) Tried the recovery partition -- spinning wheel on a grey screen.
6.) Tried safe verbose boot (command - shift - v) -- it interleaves "still waiting for root device" with "SATA WARNING: Enable Drive PHY PM failed" and "SATA WARNING: auto-activate failed".
7.) Reset PRAM & NVRAM -- no joy.
8.) Connected the MacBook Pro via firewire to a Core 2 Duo white MacBook also running 10.7.1. The MacBook recognized the drive and in Disk Utility, I could see all the partitions on it.
9.) Ran repair volume (for the drive) and repair partition (for my main partition) from disk utility on the MacBook -- it said everything's fine with both.
10.) In system preferences, set the Scorpio Black as the startup drive for the MacBook.
11.) Astonishingly, the MacBook booted up just fine off the Scorpio Black in the MacBook Pro. I logged in, opened a few photos and played a video. Everything worked just peachy.
12.) Booted the MacBook Pro off my old internal hard drive, now in an external enclosure.
13.) Disk utility sees the internal Scorpio Black, and reports everything is fine with the volume and the partition.
14.) System profiler says everything is fine when I check under SATA. SMART status is verified.
Which brings me to step 15: admit defeat and ask for help. Any suggestions? The exact model number of the drive is WD7500BKPT. I purchased it from Other World Computing.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers.

I actually first replaced the stock hard drive with a Western Digital 500 GB Scorpio Blue (i.e., a 5400 rpm drive). Here's what I can tell you about all three.
First, I didn't notice any difference in noise, vibration or power consumption between any of the drives. The computer felt stock with both of the Western Digital drives.
In terms of speed, my understanding is, all other things being equal, a larger drive is always faster than a lower capacity drive (I believe that's because more of the data is on the faster rotating outer areas). That being said, the step up to the 750GB 7200 rpm Scorpio Black was a bigger one than to the 500 GB 5400 rpm Scorpio Blue -- it gave a noticeable bump in performance. Opening my Aperture library and browsing photos went from sluggish and borderline unusuable to acceptable, or even good.
Bottom line, it's not a solid state drive, so don't expect MacBook Air levels of responsiveness, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the Scorpio Black.

  • Cannot properly format Western Digital 3.0 TB SATA drives

Hi, I have purchased a few Western Digital 3.0TB Caviar® Green Hard Disk Drives and today have been attempting to format them. Unfortunately, they are only showing 800.79 GB available... after using Disk Utility on Intel based Mac(s) running 10.6.8. (specifically a 2010 Mini running 10.6.8 and a 2009 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac). I cannot find anything addressing this on any blog, let alone the Western Digital site. I am formatting them Mac OS Extended Journaled, GUID 1 partition. Am I doing something wrong or are other customers having similar problems?
    Sincerely,
    -ddscott57

    ddscott57 wrote:
Very smart, thank you... My system utilizes several Mac Minis and I am therefore reliant on using their interfaces (which in this case is having to settle for USB 2, as my single Firewire ports are in use by a Canopus). I've been digging for more up to date 4 Bay Enclosure units but to no avail when it comes to having both the USB 2 option as well as the 3TB capability. Seems I'm gonna lose for now on the 3TB SATA purchases.
Perhaps just purchase a single drive enclosure for the 3TB drive(s), if you can't return the drives.  But considering that HD prices are expected to rise due to shortages, I'd probably not return the drives.
I have no experience with Canopus products, but I'm assuming that the Canopus has issues with daisychaining, similar to other high-end audio devices.  (If not, then obviously you can put the Canopus device at the end of the chain or get a Firewire hub.)  Perhaps you want to look at some sort of NAS enclosure, which would have faster transfer than USB (although not as fast as Firewire.)  This assumes you attach the Mini and the NAS to wired gigabit ethernet, and not Wi-Fi.
edit: BTW, OWC's Mercury Pro Qx4 and Drobos appear to support 3TB drives.

  • 10.8.5 compatibility with wd my book thunderbolt duo 4TB

Just purchased this external hard drive to set up as RAID 1. Finder recognises the drive is attached via thunderbolt. Problem is, the WD utilities app doesn't recognise the external hard drive. Tried setting up RAID 1 configuration using Disk Utility. Big Fail. Spent 30 mins on the line with WD Support and they blame it on latest update Mac OS X 10.8.5 telling me it might be months before there's a resolution. WT? Just purchased this yesterday. Is it Mac or is it WD? Or is it me? Suggestions anyone?

    Hello,
I too am having this issue with my Thunderbolt WD Velociraptor since 10.8.5.
I have written to WD Support, I suggest you do the same my friend.
This is the response so far....
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Support. Your case is forwarded to our second level of support to check the issue in our laboratory. When I will receive respond form them I will contact you back as soon as possible.
It may be up to APPLE to fix. I dont really mind who sorts it out as long as it is asap!

  • Western Digital

Okay, so I have read the news articles and reports about the possibility of data loss on Western Digital External drives but I still have some questions.
I upgraded to Mavericks before learning about the drive problems, but then disconnected them as soon as I heard. Before I had unplugged them, they had worked fine, and I had not had any data loss.
So here is my question, what has Western Digital done to fix this and when will that fix be in place?
Also, if I didn't have any problems with my drives before I unplugged them, is it okay to plug them back in?
Is it a problem with the Western Digital software or Mavericks? Both?
I just want to know when I can start using my drives again . . .
    Thanks for the help!

More info from the WD Community topic I linked to above...
If for some reason you cannot download & use the uninstaller WD now has on its downloads pages, according to a WD tech, you can do this instead:
Steps to completely remove WD SmartWare from your Mac:
Run the SmartWare uninstaller application located in /Applications/
Using Apple’s Activity Monitor from /Applications/Utilities quit the following processes:
    WDDMService
    WD Quick View
    SmartwareServerApp
Delete /Library/LaunchDeamons/com.wdc.WDDMService.plist (Entry that causes WDDM to start.)
Delete /Library/LaunchDeamons/com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist (Entry that causes the SmartWare Server to start.)
Delete /Applications Support/WDSmartware (Removes all SmartWare support programs)
    Delete /Application/WDSmartWare (SmartWare user interface)
    Delete Library/Preferences/com.wdc.smartware.plist
From System Preferences->Users Login Items remove WDQuickview for all users. (Entry that runs WD Quick View when a user logs in. There should be a single entry for all users. Deleting it from one any account should remove it for all accounts.)
Once you do that, or download & run the uninstaller, it should be safe to plug in & use your external drives.
Note that the problem with the WD utilities, whatever it is, can affect other brands of external drives, not just WD ones. The symptom is unexpected reformatting of the attached drive(s) without user intervention. According to at least one user, after the reformat the drive has just an EFI partition & one named "MyBook," even for other brands that don't use the WD "MyBook" trade name.

  • Western digital a reliable brand?

am planning to upgrade the HDD on my macbook core 2 duo to 250gb og western digital's HDD.
    is it a reliable brand?

    Hi Alvin Ray,
every person have different preference on each brand.
for me, western digital is not my favorite, not specifically for laptop HD, but I have a stack of dead 3.5 form factor IDE western digital HD from mac and PC that I pull and replaced from my office computers.
    Good Luck.

  • Western Digital 500GB SATA-300 HDD

Can i install a Western Digital 500GB SATA-300 Hard Drive in my imac?
    Please help!
My imac is a Intel Based 17¨ 1.83 MHZ.

You can't install anything (including a new drive) inside an Intel iMac with the exception of ram, if you want to preserve the warranty. This is not to say internal drive couldn't be replaced if you are willing to open the case, or get someone to do it for you. Not clear which Intel iMac you have, your descriptive line at the bottom of your post said it was a "g5" and none of the intel iMac's are g5 based. If yours is a core 2 duo it is quite possibly under the original warranty still, but even if it is a core duo machine and you purchased Applecare you would be advised not to pry open the case.
A better approach would be to buy an external drive in an enclosure with a USB or firewire interface and use that for your drive expansion.

  • Waking iMac has The disk was not ejected properly. I have OS 10.8.5 using My Book Thunderbolt Duo external HD.

Waking iMac, since last OS10.8.5 update, gives "The disk was not ejected properly" message.  Western Digital sent a replacement drive to find out the problem doesn't go away. I have tried Option, Command, R and P at start up. This doesn't help. Anything else I might try to rectify the situation?

    The drive is malfunctioning.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, it has to be replaced. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

    how do I un-do 10.9?

    Thanks for the reply.
    Here's their reply:
    Thank you for your reply.
After reviewing the error message displayed, the reason for the error message is due to a incompatibility between the WD Print share software and Mac latest OS installment.
The WD Print share software is currently support only up to Mac OSx 10.8, for which on Mac 10.9 it would create some issues as the software is not supported.
If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.

I had a 640GB HDD in my Early 2008 Macbook and it was just too much it would always freeze up the computer a bit for only a few seconds but ya. Then I realized that it was the size of the HDD that was causing it since the Early 2008 Macbook models can only handle a MAX od 500GB while the Early 2008 Macbook Pros could have a MAX of 640GB (Lucked out there!) lol But ya the Early 2008 Mocbooks can only handle a MAX HDD size of 500GB and that's it!! lol

  • MSI KT3 ultra aru Western Digital 200GB raid problem

    Hi!
    This is what I've got.
    KT3 Ultra-ARU (MS-6380E)
    AMD 2000+
256 MB 333mhz RAM (AMD Compatible)
Seagate ST330630A 30GB (an old drive)
    Maxtor 6L080J4 80GB
    Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 6Y080L0 80Gb 7200rpm 2Mb UDMA133 Fluid IDE
Western Digital Caviar WD1800JB 180Gb 7200rpm Special Edition UDMA100 IDE
Western Digital Caviar WD2000JB 200Gb 7200rpm Special Edition UDMA100 IDE
    Promise 100 IDE-controller
    Creative Geforce MX 440
    Lite-on LTR-40125W
    NEC ND-1300 DVD
    And the configuration:
    IDE1: Seagate (Master)
    IDE2: WD1800BG (Cabel Select)
IDE3(Raid1): Maxtor 6LO80J4 (Master) and Maxtor 6Y080L0 (Slave) raided as an single drive
    IDE4(Raid2): WD2000JB (Cable Select)
    IDE5(IDE-controller1):
    IDE6(IDE-controller2): NEC ND-1300 (Master) and Lite-on LTR-40125W (Slave)
    And the Software:
I've updated all the software drivers so I've got the newest and I'm currently runnign Win2k SP3 with almost every patch installed on it.
    And finally the problem:
When I've hook my WD2000JB to the on-board raid everything seems to be working normaly. The bios finds the drive and makes a new array. Win2k boots up and finds the drive and I can create an partition. But when I've try to format it it the computer starts to freeze for a while and then acts like normal again. The HDD-led blinks as it should during the "normal" time, but when the comp. freezes it stops blinking. The formatation stops at 7% and the HDD-led stops lighting. I don't get an error eventhough it was several hours since it stoped. And the formatation takes like 30min for 1%.
When I connect the WD2000JB to the IDE3 I can format it and it acts just like normal. I even did a full system test with the System tool found on Western Digitals support site and it didn't find any errors. But when move it to the raid-IDE the errors return. I've get Error reading / writing to disk and when I've did a chkdsk I've got the "Coudn't use Device) so I did a scandisk and it found very very many errors so it completly ereased everything that was on it.
And when I've run Western Digitals program again i've get an error (Disk error read/writing) error code: 0113.
Can it be that the Western Disk doesn't work well with Raid? I've haven't heard anything about that, so...
    Best regars,
    Mathias

You can have a look at my hardware below...
    Chassis: Antec 1080B (300w PSU / 180w COMBINED)
    Mainboard: MSI KT3 Ultra ARU
    CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1800+
    Display: ABIT Siluro GF4 Ti4200 AGP 4X
    DVD/CD-RW Combo: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4120B
    Floppy: Panasonic 1.44MB
    HD: Quantum Fireball Plus/AS 30.0GB UDMA 100
    Keyboard: Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro
    Monitor: KDS Visual Sensations VS-190
Mouse: Microsoft USB Wheel Mouse Optical
    NICs: 3Com 3C900B / DLink DFE-530TX
RAM: Micron DDR 266MHz (2x256MB DIMMs)
    Sound: Avance AC'97 Audio
I've had similar problems where my system becomes very unstable at higher bus speeds. Installing Windows XP simply didn't work very good. However, I have ordered a new PSU today as a solution to this problem. Basically, CPUs and video cards are much more demanding and the more devices you have in your computer the more power you're going to need. I recommend purchasing the Enermax EG465P-VE (FCA) 450W ATX PS. It has a higher amperage rating and will most likely solve your problem.
Check your PSU and your bus speed settings...
