Western Digital TV Live plus conected to Time Capsule

My question is one of security.
My time capsule WIFI is secured with a password, does that mean that my WD TV that is connected with a Ethernet cable to my time capsule also secure ?

There's no security over your local "wired" network, but there is a firewall between your local network and the internet that will prevent any connections to your network unless you specifically allow it.
Here I am assuming that you have your Time Capsule connected directly to a modem. If you have the Time Capsule connected to another router, then it is up to that router to provide the protection between your local network and the internet.

I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live.  It is taking forever.  Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up?  Also I am on a wireless network.

The initial Time Machine backup can certainly take a long time over wireless. Days, possibly. It's impossible for anyone here to be able to predict how long it will take, and wireless environmental conditions can change at any time.
Is there antivirus software running in the background
Only you can determine that. If you're using third party AV software, anything is possible.
NAS devices may not be compatible with Time Machine, regardless of what their manufacturers may claim. Even after the Time Machine backup completes, your backup may be unreliable. You may not discover that until you need to rely upon the backup for some reason, and corruption can occur months or years from now.
Time Machine supports the following backup configurations:
    A locally mounted volume
    Time Capsule
A volume resident on a USB hard disk connected directly to a Time Capsule or current production AirPort Extreme Base Station.
That's it. Any configuration other than the above list places you in an experimental category. If your backup fails, you're on your own.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • Time Machine and Western Digital MyBook Live

I bought a WD 3Tb MyBook Live NAS drive for use with Time Machine. It supports TM out of the box without any OS tweaks.  I'm running OS 10.6.7.
TM won't run longer than an hour.   Almost every hour I see
    Log entries:
    5/6/11 1:53:04 AM          configd[14]          network configuration changed.
    5/6/11 1:53:08 AM          configd[14]          network configuration changed.

    5/6/11 3:53:44 AM          configd[14]          network configuration changed.
The above happens with or without TM enabled and running.   With TM running it looks like:

It seems that this network config change breaks the connection to the TM volume.   Any ideas on what's causing the network config change?
The WD drive and iMac are connected via ethernet (Not Wireless) to the same linksys WRT54GL router.

Using a third-party network device with Time Machine is unsupported by Apple, and may be unsafe. If it doesn't work, your only recourse is to the device vendor, who will blame Apple. Apple will blame the vendor. I suggest you back up either to a locally-attached external hard drive, or to a Time Capsule, or to a shared volume hosted on another Mac.

  • Want to backup a Seagate Wireless Plus to my Time Capsule via Time Machine

    Hi,
I currently have my macbook and an external drive with movies backed up via time machine to a Time Capsule.  I want to replace the storage device with a Seagate wireless plus in order to both store and stream data with other platforms in the house.  I still want to regularily back up this wireless storage device to Time Capsule as a safety net.  Can I do this wirelessly or does the new Seagate drive need to be physically connected to my Mac or to the USB port on the TC?  I don't want it to be part of the TC, I just want it to be a disk available for back up to the TC.

Have a long hard think about this.
Reading the review of the seagate, the problems with using a wireless device like this are great..
This device is trying to be a network device.. that is the only way you can connect to wireless.. but at the same time, provide some access to the internet.
Wireless on your computers/idevices cannot connect to two wireless AP's at the same time.. That makes the Seagate useless.
    Read the review. http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/seagate/wireless_plus_1tb_hard_drive/457705 /
What it is apparently doing is providing a link to your main wireless router.. ie the TC.. so you can have internet at the same time.. but note.. this is extremely slow.. as noted in the review.. the internet speed is really poor due to the lack of proper networking. You are using a box which is effectively a hotspot.. but is linked by wireless to your main router.. If you want a definition of how NOT to use wireless in a network this is it.
Without ethernet connection forget it. To simply have a wireless hotspot to carry around with you.. IMHO there are lower cost and superior ways.. since wireless is not of much use and will be slow.. plug a 2.5" drive directly into your computer. Or use cloud services with a 3G or 4G modem or tether to your phone. Don't forget you can carry around a pretty big store of files now in SD cards.
I also like the idea of being able to take the wireless portable drive wtih me so I can edit photos or view photos from my other laptop on the road.
So you cannot plug the USB drive into the other machine?? Wireless hotspot usage without 3G connection for on road seems to be an expense for not much gain.. but of course if you want it for this great.. just don't expect to put it into the network easily other than by USB. And for that to work I would need to study the specs more closely.. but if you cannot format it HFS+ don't bother. Using iphoto on non-HFS+ drives is not recommended.
If I go with a NAS drive - I can connect that to the TC for connectivity, but then how to incorporate the data on that NAS drive onto the TC as part of the backup.
CCC is $40 software.. it will do whatever you like.
but losing the photos and home videos would be:(
You must be very careful with iphoto library.. and videos more than likely.
    iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
    This article states..
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
You are playing with fire using the Seagate to edit iphoto library.. and it is important you realise the risk.

  • Slow internet conection from time capsule

I got the Time Capsule to replace my Trendnet TEW-633gr router and use as back-up slash storage.  I also just bought a Macbook Pro but have not received it yet.  I also just replaced my cable modem with the Motorola SB6121 becuase my speed had dropped of severely for weeks and couldnt just sit around and wait for repair service to arrive.  The new modem fixed my problem when connected to the Trendnet.  So I start the process for getting the Time Cap up and running which was anything but smooth.  Im new to Apple products(minus the iphone) so I could bare some of the blame, but with that said....I have built my last few computers so I have a decent working knowledge.  I am also really excited about the new mac comming but I need to rant a little about my first experience with owning an apple product.
First off, the instructions leave much to the imagination and they seemed little scatter brained(kinda like me atm.)  I download Airport Utilty and it finds my TC.  I hit continue.  It searches and such then an error code.  Repeated this a few times with error code(s) again.  I finally get it up and running after a little prodding.  YAY! exited for...slow interent again.  Needless to say sad/frustrated.  Hooked up the old trendnet and everything is fine.
    My questions are these...
Is there some sort of compatibility issue between my TC and modem/PC's?
Can I just use the Storage on the TC via my old router via ehternet cable?
When I get my mac should the setup go smoothly?
Really any suggestions/tips on using the TC only or TC/router is what Im after.
    Thanks

If the router is off on the 2wire..
the router function on my 2WIRE Modem is already turned off.
then the TC has to be in router mode and you must use pppoe authentication. otherwise you are really double NATting which could cause issues. You stated in line 3 your TC is bridged.
set to bridge on time capsule.
Is the 2wire a wireless modem router? If so the wireless could interfere with the TC.
Connect using the 2wire in router mode. and the TC in bridge.
If the 2wire is wireless, turn wireless off in the TC. Do you get better speeds now?
If you run two wireless routers next to each other you might need to fix and lock channels. There are only 3 non-overlapping channels at 2.4ghz.. 1, 6, 11.. pick one for the TC and pick another for the 2wire. The MBP is perhaps using 5ghz.. but the iphone is stuck using 2.4ghz. So you need to fix this up.
    Tell us more.

  • Western Digital HD live - how to play iTunes TV & movies already on WD Pass

I purchased a WD HD Live media player to play my authorized iTunes TV & Movie downloads from the WD Passport 350MB portable drive. I normally play them with Quick Time from the WD portable drive -

Which iPad are you using? Mine (First generation) simply crashes to the desktop--I don't get any error message, however, I am able to stream movies flawlessly with my iPhone 4s in both wireless and 4G modes.

  • Time Capsule disconnects when I connect my external hard drive

All my software is up to date, but when I connect my Western Digital external hard drive to the Time Capsule's USB port, the Time Capsule disconnects from the internet, my PC (which is connected via ethernet), and my MacBook Pro (via wi-fi). Sometimes it'll work okay for a few hours and then just goes incommunicado later in the day. If I remove the external hard drive from the USB port and restart, I have no problems. But once I plug it back in, it happens all over again. What's going on here?

That'll work as well, just not as convenient when you are on the go. You may want to pick one of these up as well. (not sure which plug you need, but there are a bunch of different ones on ebay).

  • Plugging in an external hard drive to the time capsule

    Hi,
I am a little confused by the discussion I have found on this topic. I am a recent PC to Mac person. I have a new MacBook Pro, a Time Capsule I recently bought and an iOmega external hard drive (houses ALL of my music). Is it possible to plug my iOmega drive into my Time Capsule and have my MacBook Pro be able to read the music off of it. Like iTunes and stuff?
    Thanks

I think your on to something with regards to the external power. I plugged a 320 GB Western Digital external (USB powered) in my time capsule and instantly the amber light started flashing and I received and Time Capsule disk error. As soon as I unplugged it the time capsule went green and said the problem was resolved. The 320 external HDD works fine when I plug it straight into my Mac.

  • Time Machine v western digital my book live fail second backup

HI I am using iMac 27 inch, running Lion.
I used Western Digital Mybook live as my time machine backup.
I follow the instrustion step by step, its work fine.
However, when I restarted my mac. Then its start fail to do continues backup.
I can't do any backup anymore. Its always show fail.
Anyone have idea how to deal with this?
    Thanks.

    Sorry, no answer from me.
I seem to have a similar problem with an WD drive.
TM says it cannot connect to the drive eventhough I can acces the drive and see the sparesbundles.
The problem started when using Mavericks.
i think I will set up another way to make back ups from my Mac's.

  • Time Capsule and WD TV Live with Speedlink W503V

    Hello guys,
I'm a proud owner of the latest Time Capsule which is connected to a Speedlink W503V for the internet connection.
Today I bought the Western Digital TV Live for my TV.
I'd like to stream the movies/music/photos I have on my TC on my TV via wifi.
    So:
The WD TV Live is connected in my home network on the TC by wifi.
The TC is connected to my Speedlink W503V by LAN.
So if anyone knows how to do it, please share you knowledge with me.
    With kind regards,
    ChickenDuy

There are no smarts in the TC whatsoever.. it is a file store, nothing more.
To play material the WD should just be able to play files it finds on the TC..
You certainly should setup the TC to SMB standard.. ie all names short, no space, pure alphanumeric.. that includes the main TC name, wieless name and hard disk name.
If you then place a movie file on the TC in a directory the WD TV can read, it will be able to play it.
Same would go for photo or music.. but I am not sure how you would order a playlist etc.
There are applications on the computer or ipad that should be able to stream the files to the WD.. but I have no idea what you would use.. the point is .. the TC has nothing to do with it. You are probably better asking in WD forum.

  • Will a western digital 1tb passport se work with lion?

Hi, bought a western digital hard drive at the same time as i bought my mac but it wont work with lion. can anyone help?

My WD Passport is working with Lion.
Did you reformat your drive using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
If you have and are still having problems, I would return it and get the Seagate GoFlex drive.

  • Western digital my book problem

    Hi,
I am using a Macbook pro mid 2010 with 10.8.5 for the past year I have had a 1 tb western digital my book work as my time machine and storage drive. I partitioned the external hard drive. However, about two weeks ago the time machines stopped working. it failed the back up and all my back ups till then were deleted. i reformatted that partition and tried to create a new Time Machine but its giving the "an error ocurred while creating the backup folder." On the Time machine partition their is a folder called "Backups.backupdb" inside it is a folder with the mac books name on it. Insde that folder is a file called "2013-07-29-234258.InProgress" I can't delete that folder nor any of the files. i also can't reformat the partition because of it can't unmount error.
The second issue with the harddrive (might not be related to the time machine) is in my storage partition. I can copy and save files on it, however i can't delete stuff from it. When I try to delete a folder, it goes to the trash, however i can't empty the trash becasue of either a -8072 or a -50 error. I also can not eject the hard drive because files are in use. I am assuming that the files are those in the trash which cannot be emptied. I cannot move the files from the trash back to the partition because of a error code 50. However, I can copy them to my macbooks hard drive.
At this point is there any solution? or any way to force the hard drive to be deleted. i have already backed up all important files so I feel safe in wiping out my hard driving and starting anew.
    Thank you

  • Magicjack plus and Time Capsule 2TB

I have been using the new MagicJack Plus with my Time Capsule 2TB with no problems for 6 months. Then it stopped working. It can't connect and all that happens is the network light comes on then the telephone light comes on I get a dial tone for a few seconds then the lights go out and the sequence starts all over. I recived a new MagicJack Plus and it did the same thing so MagicJack sent me a third one still the same thing. We tried different power adapters and different ethernet ports but nothing works. I can't seem to find the MAC address or even an IP address for the MagicJack using the Airport Utility 6.3.1 with the latest firmware. I wanted to try to open ports 5060 and 5070 but apparantly you have to assign it to an IP address which I find strange. The MagicJack Plus works fine when attached to a computer via USB. Any help would be appreciated.

    Mike Vallario wrote:

Did you happen to upgrade the firmware? Just then.. as Apple just pushed out 7.6.4.. and that will probably kill it.
It will work via the Mac because Mac's open ports with NAT-PMP .. a system only Macs have and is apple's replacement to the rest of the world using upnp.
To figure out the IP of the MagicJack and its MAC address is tricky.. Apple does show that info for wireless but not for wired connections.
You might find that info will show up in the log of the TC. You will need to use v5 utility to get it.
But there is a fairly if not exactly straight forward way. (Every device btw should have its MAC address printed on it).
If the TC is at standard IP, ie 10.0.1.1 it will be very uniform in handing out addresses starting from 2 and up.
So lets get rid of everything else.. shut down the network.. everything off. .and start up in order..
    Modem ..
    TC..
    Computer..
    MagicJack.
Nothing else. Leave 2min between each start up.
You can pretty well guarantee the computer is 10.0.1.2 and the MagicJack is 10.0.1.3
Ping the IP of the MagicJack in the computer in a terminal..
    ping 10.0.1.3
Use control C to stop the ping after a few responses.
Now type the command arp -a
(On Lion or Mountain Lion it should be the same.. but I am not sure).
When I type that command all known IP addresses and their MAC address are shown.
So I plugged my VOIP ATA into the TC.. I know its address.. from elsewhere. I ping it and there it is in the arp table.
    arp -a
? (192.168.2.66) at (incomplete) on en1 ifscope [ethernet]
    c470-ip.local (192.168.2.100) at 0:1:e3:77:80:5b on en1 ifscope [ethernet]

? (192.168.2.255) at (incomplete) on en1 ifscope [ethernet
You have to ping it first otherwise it will not show up.
    c470-ip.local (192.168.2.100) at 0:1:e3:77:80:5b on en1 ifscope [ethernet]
Then you have the name of the device.. c470-ip.local
    Its IP address. 192.168.2.100
and the MAC address 0:1:e3:77:80:5b to fix in the TC for port forwarding.
If you need btw.. 0 is 00 and 1 is 01 just if the full thing is required.
Bit complicated sorry.. but nothing else comes to mind.
Unless you have a modem router.. if you have a modem router.. put it in router mode and bridge the TC.. then your problems will go away.
