  • Western Digital My Book 500GB External Hard Drive

    Hello,
Just wondering if anyone is using the Western Digital My Book 500GB External Hard Drive and how do you like it? A few people I know bought this one and say that they like it. One good thing is that it is already Mac compatible.
Any information on this would be great!
    Thanks,

Looks like it will work fine but I'd highly recommend you buy one that has both ext. FW and USB2 (as opposed to usb only).

  • Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" IDE hard drive upgrade soft clicking noise

Just replaced the original hard drive in my 17" Powerbook G4 with a Western Digital Scorpio 250GB 2.5" IDE drive, model WD2500BEVE. I notice a strange noise coming from the drive every minute or two, almost like the drive is going to sleep and waking up. I contacted WD tech support and this was their response:
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. I apologize for the inconvenience. This issue is caused by a system initiated power management command being interpreted incorrectly by the hard drive. The sound is normal and as of yet, we do not have a fix for it.
Not sure if it is a larger issue with all WD 2.5" drives but if you have the noise, you are going to have to live with it or settle for a smaller capacity Seagate or Toshiba drive or hope that WD has a firmware update for MacOSX which is slim to none imo.
Anyone else have this problem or more importantly, are using a WD 2.5" drive and do NOT have this problem?

    dausone:
This is a known issue with these drives, although not all drives have the problem; indeed, I have seen only a few reports from the many people who have installed them. WD is aware of the issue and there is a fix for PC users of this drive, but not for Macs. I suggest that you call WD Tech Support, or Customer Relations and tell them you would like to have the drive replaced.

  • Western Digital is Eating my Mavericks Hard Drive

Upgraded to Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks.  It has corrupted my Western Digital internal hard drive.  This is not an external drive, which is what WDC is warning about.  Also, I don't have any of the three WD software programs that are mentioned in their warning.  What other problems are Western Digital customers having?
MacBook Pro 13 Inch (Mid 2010)

I currently have a replacement WD drive installed in the MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.5 rebuilt from scratch.  I have the corrupted WD drive connected externally by Corsair SATA to USB cable to salvage data off of the OS X 10.9 drive.  I also have my Time Machine drive attached by Firewire 800.
I have not installed any WD software, either now or in the past.

  • WD Caviar Black WD6401AALS - hard drive - 640 GB - SATA-300

I currently use an external hard drive to store my music ec on and have noticed that it is getting more and more sluggish and that the internal hard drive seems considerably faster.
For this reason I'm looking at installing an additional internal hard drive.
I'm looking at Western Digital's Caviar Black 640GB. Will this work on my mac and what do I need to get it installed?
    Many thanks

Should work fine. I just did the same thing with the Western Digital Caviar SE16 640--
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD6400AAKS/
The Hatter has recommended this drive, and works great for me, but I imagine the Black would work the same. Mine was easy to install. The user guide for your computer has detailed directions, but if it's like my late 2005 2 Ghz G5, leaves out exact details about plugging in the power and data cables: the little "trick" is that the connections for the upper and lower hard drive come off the same cable. Pulling the cable further out reveals a second set of connections coming off it. These will plug in your upper drive, and the connectors at the end, which were previously in your upper drive, will now plug in the lower drive.
Take the instructions for discharging static electricity very seriously!
OWC has great tech support and video instructions online. You can also search "Caviar Black" on this forum and maybe see distinctions between that and the SE16. Good luck!

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with Western Digital 750Gb Caviar Green 32mb

Hi all, this is my first post and im a bit of a numbskull when it comes to upgrading, thus this post.
My HDD is on its last legs and I want to get a Western Digital 750Gb Caviar Green 32mb. Im not sure weather it will work with my  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (MS-7025). Can anyone help me out? If you have any suggestions for a better HDD to go for that would also be appreciated, Cheers

Burst speeds are high mainly because of the disk's cache. That's the only part of the HDD that can get near the maximum bandwdth of the controller.
The bottleneck for speed is in the fact that the HDD's mechanical properties won't allow it to work faster. With SSD's it is or will be different.
Back to topic: the WD Green is an excellent choice. I've 6 of those running here now, 5 in a NAS and 1 in my pc and they're simply good. Not the fastest, but very stable, quiet and fast enough.

  • Seagate 500GB Internal Hard Drive 500 GB ATA IDE +Cable

Will this HD Work on my MacBook (2 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo)?
"Seagate 500GB Internal Hard Drive 500 GB ATA IDE +Cable"

ok I found another on eBay
"Seagate 250Gb Internal IDE Hard Drive 7200RPM"
(INFO) This is a still in the sealed package 250Gb Internal IDE 3.5", 7200RPM Seagate Hard Drive. This is a Seagate "certified repaired" HDD that was shipped to me for a return. It has never been installed nor has it ever been open. The label also indicates it is a Barracuda 7200.8.
Should this one work on my MacBook.
And thanx you for help on my first question.

  • 400GB hard drive only coming up as 128 GB drive

I am trying to install Mac X 10.4 on a Mac G4. I bought a 400 GB seagate drive but every time I erase and try to format the drive in the internal bay it only comes up as a 128 gb drive. Can anyone help Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can also get a Sonnet PCI ATA card if you want the drive to be internal. The only reason I'd have it as internal is if you already have a backup that is external, and need external internal scratch storage space, or an emergency boot system for when the other internal hard drive fails. Backups though should generally go on external drives as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html

  • Dead hard drive or Dead ata bus?

I think I just had my internal ata boot drive die, but I'm not sure if it's the drive or the bus. When I boot from the install disc and do System Profiler it doesn't even show the hard drive ATA Bus, it only shows the dvd drive ATA Bus. If I remove the hard drive and reboot to the install disc, it does show both ATA Buses. Could that be a short in the hard drive?
Now I'm looking at my backups, and to add insult to injury it looks like my main backup drive is dead, too! My most recent backup on a different drive is two months old. Aaagh! I just lost thanksgiving and christmas photos. I've had nothing but problems with my two western digital drives - not using them again.

    Hi, Paul -
If I remove the hard drive and reboot to the install disc, it does show both ATA Buses. Could that be a short in the hard drive?
A failed hard drive can sometimes take down the ATA bus it is connected to, or even take down all ATA buses (the latter happened to me one time).
...it looks like my main backup drive is dead, too!
If it hasn't taken the bus down, the data on it may be salvageable at reasonable expense. There's a couple of utilities available designed to recover data from drives that are mechanically sound, but which refuse to mount for some reason; both have try-before-you-buy demo modes -
    Data Rescue
    Virtual Lab
If the backup drive was on the same bus as the boot drive discussed previously, you may need to change its jumpers in order for it to be recognized again. Western Digital drives often have a third jumper position, Single, which is to be used when the drive is the only device on the bus (on those drives, Master is used when there is also a Slave present).

  • Dead hard drive: 7200 RPM HDD compatible with a L500-19X Satellite?

Last night, i believe the HDD of my 2 and a half year old L500-19X Satellite died.  When I tried to boot, it hung up on the windows icon, and when I try rebooting, it asks me if I want to try some kind of boot recovery function...but when I go to that, it hangs up with only the background displayed. So there seems no way to access the Windows recover functions saved on the hard drive.  I do not have an external HDD case, so I can't really tell if the HDD is turning or not.
I bought a new HDD - it is a 500 GB 7200 RPM Seagate.  I used the Toshiba recovery disks, however, once the laptop uploaded all the data and tried to boot, it would always hang up, saying that it cannot complete windows installation, and I should try rebooting...which only results in it hanging again.  Desperate to have a functional computer, I also tried installing Ubuntu, but the Ubuntu installation also failed after a few minutes, giving me an error message saying the HDD is probably bad or the laser of the CD drive dirty (it appears to be clean).
My question is: could the problem be that I am using a 7200 RPM drive?  I checked the specs of the original drive, and it is only 5400 RPM.  Or is the new HDD probably defective?
If anyone can think of anything else that would cause this problem, I would appreciate any tips you can give me!  I am *pretty* sure that the motherboard and the rest of the hardware are sound, since it seemed to operate fine when reading the backup DVDs and the Ubuntu DVD - it only had problems when trying to access the HDD.
    Thanks!!

I thought it might use the advanced-format technology. But that's apparently not the case.

  • Motherboard crashed, hard drive missing LR and 100 gigs of photo files

able to save drive, put in ext ensclosure and hooked it up tp laptop.  am able to open My Pictures folder, only 10 gigs worth of pics visible.
should be 126 gigs.  most programs still on drive and accessible: i tunes, all canon photo software, etc.  the LR catalog is nowhere to be found.
when this drive was in the desktop there was 25 gigs free space left.  viewing the drive hooked up to laptop it also shows 25 gigs free.
wondering if this info is false.  if not, where are my missing files and LR ???
i do have my stuff backed up but not sure if all of it backed up, specifically some photo files.
have tried booting from the drive instead of from laptop drive, windows would not allow.  desktop was xps, laptop is vista.  during that boot i actually saw the xps logo come up a couple of times but then it went to vista.
    any help would be appreciated.
a tech friend suggested hooking drive up to his linux os which i am going to do this weekend.

Sounds like you have two problems. 1) Unable to load LR onto the second system (laptop) and 2) the hard drive with original system files has a corrupted file system due to motherboard failure and system crash.
Problem 1: LR license activation allows loading onto two (2) systems. Did you load LR on two systems prior to the crash, which is now preventing you from activating the copy on your laptop? You may need to call Adobe Tech Support to "free-up" the license on your crashed system.
Problem 2: You will need to some data recovery work, due to a corrupted file system on the original HDD. There are numerous data recovery software applications available as freeware or for purchase:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/data-recovery-software/
I only have experience with Acronis True Image Home 2010, and definitely would NOT recommend their products due to bugs and poor tech support. Perhaps someone else on the LR forums can suggest a specific data recovery application?

  • Hard Drive Highest Activity time 100%

Hello. I own a Portege R835-P94. I was using it normally, just surfing the web and suddenly it turns really slow and unresponsive. I noticed that the hdd led stays green (not blinking, just solid green) and I opened task manager trying to find the problem. No processes were usign so much resources but in the resource monitor the disk activity shows some abnormality. The highest activity time was 100%. I restart my laptop and the problem was gone for a couple of minutes but it came back again and this time a blue screen error appeared.
I attache an image that shows the activity of the disk in wich you can see a peaks of activity time. Each time it reaches 100% the hard drive make an abnormal sound.
Is a 640GB disk with 454GB free space.
I have desfragmented the disk, chek for erros but nothing works. I hope some of you can help me.

  • Samsung spinpoint f3 vs Western Digital Black Caviar

I know both these drives are quite popular atm and that the samsung spoint f3 gained better benchmarks scores but how reliable is this drive?  I don't know too much about samsung and was wondering if the samsung is stable enough for video editing?

Both brands have a good reputation. WD is usually more expensive and less suited for use in raid configurations due to the WD TLER "feature".
With every new disk you have to pay special attention to rattling noises or strange drops in transfer rates, because that can indicate possible problems, but if they operate reliably for three months, you can be pretty sure you not have a Monday morning model.
The F3's are extremely fast and in large arrays achieve fantastic results. Personally I would prefer the F3's.

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!
