Western Digital

Okay, so I have read the news articles and reports about the possibility of data loss on Western Digital External drives but I still have some questions.
I upgraded to Mavericks before learning about the drive problems, but then disconnected them as soon as I heard. Before I had unplugged them, they had worked fine, and I had not had any data loss.
So here is my question, what has Western Digital done to fix this and when will that fix be in place?
Also, if I didn't have any problems with my drives before I unplugged them, is it okay to plug them back in?
Is it a problem with the Western Digital software or Mavericks? Both?
I just want to know when I can start using my drives again . . .
Thanks for the help!

If for some reason you cannot download & use the uninstaller WD now has on its downloads pages, according to a WD tech, you can do this instead:
Steps to completely remove WD SmartWare from your Mac:
Run the SmartWare uninstaller application located in /Applications/
Using Apple’s Activity Monitor from /Applications/Utilities quit the following processes:
WDDMService
WD Quick View
SmartwareServerApp
Delete /Library/LaunchDeamons/com.wdc.WDDMService.plist (Entry that causes WDDM to start.)
Delete /Library/LaunchDeamons/com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist (Entry that causes the SmartWare Server to start.)
Delete /Applications Support/WDSmartware (Removes all SmartWare support programs)
Delete /Application/WDSmartWare (SmartWare user interface)
Delete Library/Preferences/com.wdc.smartware.plist
From System Preferences->Users Login Items remove WDQuickview for all users. (Entry that runs WD Quick View when a user logs in. There should be a single entry for all users. Deleting it from one any account should remove it for all accounts.)
Once you do that, or download & run the uninstaller, it should be safe to plug in & use your external drives.
Note that the problem with the WD utilities, whatever it is, can affect other brands of external drives, not just WD ones. The symptom is unexpected reformatting of the attached drive(s) without user intervention. According to at least one user, after the reformat the drive has just an EFI partition & one named "MyBook," even for other brands that don't use the WD "MyBook" trade name.

I had a 640GB HDD in my Early 2008 Macbook and it was just too much it would always freeze up the computer a bit for only a few seconds but ya. Then I realized that it was the size of the HDD that was causing it since the Early 2008 Macbook models can only handle a MAX od 500GB while the Early 2008 Macbook Pros could have a MAX of 640GB (Lucked out there!) lol But ya the Early 2008 Mocbooks can only handle a MAX HDD size of 500GB and that's it!! lol

  • MSI KT3 ultra aru Western Digital 200GB raid problem

    Hi!
    This is what I've got.

    NEC ND-1300 DVD
    And the configuration:
    IDE1: Seagate (Master)
    IDE2: WD1800BG (Cabel Select)
IDE3(Raid1): Maxtor 6LO80J4 (Master) and Maxtor 6Y080L0 (Slave) raided as an single drive
    IDE4(Raid2): WD2000JB (Cable Select)
    IDE5(IDE-controller1):
    IDE6(IDE-controller2): NEC ND-1300 (Master) and Lite-on LTR-40125W (Slave)
    And the Software:
I've updated all the software drivers so I've got the newest and I'm currently runnign Win2k SP3 with almost every patch installed on it.
    And finally the problem:
When I've hook my WD2000JB to the on-board raid everything seems to be working normaly. The bios finds the drive and makes a new array. Win2k boots up and finds the drive and I can create an partition. But when I've try to format it it the computer starts to freeze for a while and then acts like normal again. The HDD-led blinks as it should during the "normal" time, but when the comp. freezes it stops blinking. The formatation stops at 7% and the HDD-led stops lighting. I don't get an error eventhough it was several hours since it stoped. And the formatation takes like 30min for 1%.
When I connect the WD2000JB to the IDE3 I can format it and it acts just like normal. I even did a full system test with the System tool found on Western Digitals support site and it didn't find any errors. But when move it to the raid-IDE the errors return. I've get Error reading / writing to disk and when I've did a chkdsk I've got the "Coudn't use Device) so I did a scandisk and it found very very many errors so it completly ereased everything that was on it.
And when I've run Western Digitals program again i've get an error (Disk error read/writing) error code: 0113.
Can it be that the Western Disk doesn't work well with Raid? I've haven't heard anything about that, so...

I've had similar problems where my system becomes very unstable at higher bus speeds. Installing Windows XP simply didn't work very good. However, I have ordered a new PSU today as a solution to this problem. Basically, CPUs and video cards are much more demanding and the more devices you have in your computer the more power you're going to need. I recommend purchasing the Enermax EG465P-VE (FCA) 450W ATX PS. It has a higher amperage rating and will most likely solve your problem.
Check your PSU and your bus speed settings...

Hallo , my question is ;whenever I delete a photo and restore it through Time machine and Western digital external hard drive , I am able to restore the photo but not the titles and descriptions . Western Digital inform me that it isn't their external hard drive problem and suggest that it is an Apple software problem ?
    I am using  a Macbook 4.1 , with Mac OSX 10.5.8 . I photo 7.1.5 , last modifie4d 01/05/2010 -universal . Should I be upgrading  Iphoto ?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.

  • How do I erase an older Western Digital 1TB mirrored hard drive? Newer drives can be erased via a WD Utility, but the WD site says to "ask Apple" about the older ones.

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.  The hard drive is approx. six years old - a Western Digital for Macs, mirrored with 1TB on each half.
Because the drive is "infected" with Time Machine backups that I can't erase, I have removed all important files from the drive and now want to wipe it clean.  I've done this with new drives, via the WD Utility that came with the drive, but the older drive doesn't have such a utility.  The WD site only has a protocol for PCs.
I find nothing on the Apple site itself.  Can you community members help??
(I've tried various ways of deleting the Time Machine backups, but nothing has worked.  The instructions for that, which I read on a community support site, were too advanced for me to understand.  A Mac IT guy tried to erase the backups, but he didn't know how either.  So that is why I'm erasing the drive totally.  I've learned my lesson and have a dedicated Time Machine drive now.)

    Please be clear:
This is a mirrored RAID that you use as the startup disk?
You now have a different startup disk and wish to erase the RAID mirror?
Do you wish to continue using the RAID for backup?
If all you want to do is erase the RAID to get rid or the Time Machine backups, the use Disk Utility to erase the mirror disk mounted on the Desktop.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my Macbook Pro and disappeared from Disk Utility. It works on a PC.

My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my macbook pro and it disappeared from disk utility. I have tried making invisible files visible but nothing has worked and my hard drive shows up on a PC but not my Mac anymore.

What is the manufacturer of the external and how old is it? Does it have its own AC power supply or is it USB bus powered?

  • Why does my Western Digital drive freeze my OSX

    Hey all!
    I'm in a bad spot.
Yesterday I was going through files on my 6TB western digital my book hard drive connected to my old iMac running snow leopard. I had been playing many different movie files from my camera in quick time player to categorize them during a couple of days and everything had been fine. But all of a sudden quick time froze and wouldn't answer so I had to force quit it and then I tried again, then the same thing happened and then Finder and everything froze and I had to force shut off the computer by holding down the power button. Then the same thing happened after I restarted the computer. After each time I have to force off the computer the WD hard drive still has its light on and keep sounding like it's working hard and I have to pull the power plug from it to make it stop.
Then I started it again to try to just copy files from it but the drive would freeze OSX again. So I connected it to my old macbook pro and the same thing happened but then I tried to connect it with usb instead of fire wire and it seemed to act normal. Then I replaced the firewire and tested and it seemed to work fine on both computers. So I assumed it was the firewire cable that was causing problems. Since I was a bit shaken I started to do backups of everything from the hard drive and copied a folder of 323 GB during the night. In the morning it had copied everything but 10 GB and had frozen again. So again I connected both to the Macbook Pro and copied over what was missing. Then I tried to copy another folder but it froze again.
It behaves very irrational in my eyes and I wonder what is wrong and what to do?
When I start the computer without that drive, it acts normally and the same goes for when I connect another external hard drive.
Did a control with disk utility on both the internal and the external drives, and it said they are fine.
I didn't notice that the hard drive was standing in the sun which was shining through the window behind my iMac and the room was quite warm. Can that be what started all this?
Also I noticed that the folder that I did a backup of, shows different content size on the Macbook pro and on the iMac. And this goes for both the original folder and the backup on the other external drive. Finder says both folders are 301 GB on the Macbook and 323 on the iMac. This freaks me out since this is a very important folder and I can't loose 22 GB. Anyone who knows why this can be?
I would be extremely grateful for any thoughts on this!
    Thanks

When data rescue (data recovery software) makes a clone of the problem disk, does it use the disk in another way than when it does normal data recovery? When I try to do data recovery it freezes after maybe 20 minutes just as when I just copy files in Finder, is it different when making a clone?
I don't know how Data Rescue works (it's proprietary software).
It does sound like your disk could be physically damaged (you still need to try an external case) - if you continue to try to repair you may lose even more data until the disk is totally unreadable. Imagine a spec of dust scratching across your data - the act of trying to read & re-read can cause more damage. As more pieces of disk get scratched off the platters the entire inside of the mechanism gets covered in dust, resulting in more scratches, more data loss…
Seriously, the best option you have is to take it to data recovery professionals for them to look at it. They may be able to open it & replace failed parts or take a copy with a limited amount of corrupted files. Some indications may be the sound the disk makes when it 'freezes' - but that is only a guide for professional ears.
Recovery software can try to re-read data when disks encounter errors. Some smart recovery software will force the disk to avoid retrying these - that skips over the damage - the files in the damaged area will be unusable but the surrounding data may still be recoverable. Professionals may take one copy & avoid using the disk until they have diagnosed how it failed - limiting the potential for more damage.
ddrescue is one command line tool that will clone without retrying to re-read, but that is complex to use.
    http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html
Here are examples from an old disk that ground up itself…
    http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=107678
Your issue probably is not be the same as that example, I'm not trying to scare you but you should consider how important this data is, repeated recovery attempts can make that impossible even for professionals.

  • Western Digital MyBook Studio no longer works after Yosemite update

A little while ago (Jan 30) I updated Yosemite, and now my Western Digital My Book Studio (using firewire) shows up but no longer works - no Time Machine, or Super Duper back-ups. Does anyone know why this has happened, and what can be done to fix it?

I should add that the drive works fine with another MBP running OSX 10.6.8. Again, with 10.10.2 it either doesn't work or is incredibly slow.

install OS X 10.4.2 on the hard drive, I do not see the disk. What is the problem?

    Thanks for the help
I started on the installation CD OS X 10.4.2, I used Disk Utility
to partition the disk according to the document that you have proposed. unfortunately
I have not succeeded. When I partition the disk, even if I called it Macintosh HD, it
does not keep the name and it shows disk0s3 instead. I did an erase on disk.
When I mount the disk it tells me that I must repair. When I tried to repair, I got
    the following message:
    Volume check failed
The underflying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
    I also had a message:
    Invalid b-tree node size.
Note: The disc is new, but it has already been formatted on a computer Imac 27 inch 2011 OS X Lion.
I used a USB 2.0 to SATA cable to adjust the formatting.
What to do to fix it?

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n & Western Digital (My Book Essential 1TB)

I just bought a Airport Extreme 2days ago. I am trying to connect to my external HDD which is Western Digital, My book Essential, 1TB. But I just could not see the HDD on my laptop. The HDD is detected by the the airport utility and shows 930.9GB WD My Book 1110 1032. I have enable file sharing on the device as well. But i just could not see the HDD. I have tried connecting my both laptops wirelessly & using EtherNet Cable, for both options, the HDD is still not visible. Please help me
    Details as below,
Airport Extreme with firmware version 7.5.1
    Airport Utility, version 5.5.1
All systems at home are Windows XP with Service Pack 3
    Internet Type: Cable
    HDD details
Brand & Model: Western Digital, My Book Essential, 1TB
    Format : NTFS
Network description, Cable modem -> AE -> HDD into the USB of the AE
    All laptop are on wireless.
I have called up the apple support helpdesk, which they ask me to hold on, but the line was cut off, and no one actually call me back.
I badly need help to get this working..

I have the same WD drive on my Airport. In the Airport utility, I have checked the "Enable File Sharing" box. I have selected to share with my Airport Extreme password. Further down the page, the workgroup box is filled in as "WORKGROUP" - I did not have to do this, the Airport seems to have detected it. If you have nothing there, you might want to fill it in.
On the PC, with File Explorer, expand the tree My Network Places:Entire Network:Microsoft Windows Network:Workgroup. The Airport shows up here. When I click it, I get a prompt for username and password. I use the info from the PC that I use to manage the airport. Then My Book shows up and I can browse it.

  • Hard Drive (western digital) no longer mounting..?

    Hi guys.
I have yet to find any resolution to a new problem I've been having with my Western Digital Hard Drive.
I've had it for about 6 months. Has run with no problems, until recently.
    I have been running it on my Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 and Playstation3 since I bought it. I went to load up my Macbook one day, and it would not recognize the hard drive. I have run the Disk Utility repair/verify options on it. It shows up on the list, when I select eject, nothing really happens. It just stays on the list. When I select the particular partition (FRANK) on the hard drive, and click Mount, I get an error message stating; 'Try running first aid on the disk and then retry mounting.' Which I have done, and this is what I recieve;
    Verify and Repair volume “FRANK”
    Checking file system** /dev/disk1s1
    ** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
    ** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
** Phase 3 - Checking for Orphan Clusters
    28027 files, 424337248 KiB free (13260539 clusters)
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
I have plugged the HD into an iMac in the house, and it mounts no problem and all the files are there and accessable.
When I first had this problem (2 weeks ago) I decided to back everything up on the iMac, and format the HD, just to see. And again same issue, even after formatting it, FAT 32 (MS-DOS) - For Playstation.
Any ideas on what I can do to be able to access Frank again, from the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks for any help!

I had a similar issue with an Iomega hard drive after connecting it to a samsung led tv
the resolution for me was to boot into a windows partition, plug in the HDD let it do it's thing and then use the "safely disconnect device" feature in windows
afterwards it simply showed up again
the cause of this issue lies with connecting to DLNA-compliant devices (eg PS3/TV/xbox/...) and unsafely disconnecting them

  • My iMac no longer recognizes my Western Digital external HD

My external Western Digital MyBook hard drive can no longer be mounted.  This problem seems to have started occurring after I upgraded my OS to 10.5.8 (my best guess).  Have had the drive for 2 years and no problems up until now.  I connect the drive via Firewire.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance...

Western Digital electronics aren't known for their longevity (hard drives themselves are fine). Can you attach the drive to another computer? You've tried all ports on your iMac?

    -Sam

There were two versions of the 74 GB Raptor - the older one with an 8MB cache, and the newer one with the 16MB cache. The 16MB cache version is basically the same as the 150GB Raptor with one less platter inside.
My understanding of the Raptor compatibility is this:
If you have a G5 Quad, all Raptors will work with no problems (I have a 150GB Raptor as my boot drive in my Quad and have had zero issues).
If you have one of the other dual-core models besides the Quad, the Raptors seem to be pretty reliable, but some users have reported problems. Adding a third-party SATA controller card solves the problems.
If you have a pre-dual core machine, the 8MB cache 74GB Raptor will work fine. The 16MB cache models need a separate controller card to avoid issues.
Do a search for "Raptor" in this forum and you'll find some quite lenghty threads on the subject. Macgurus.com forums also have some good information. In addition, I'd check XLR8YourMac's Drive Compatibility Database for info. The main thing to look for is reports on the 16MB cache version, which is what you linked to.

When you are on your products support page go to the 'User Guides' section
Look for the "Maintenance and Service Guide"
In the guide locate the "Removal and replacement procedures" then the "Component replacement procedures"
If there is a "CPU" or "Processor" category then it will have a list of supported CPU's.
If you can only locate "System Board" then the list of boards will show the processor that comes on the boards. The latter will most likely be the case.
