Wet / dry automation in EQ?

Hey guys. This is going to sound like a silly question but I'm stumped. Let's say I create an EQ that sounds all low-fidelity.... boosted mids, cut highs and lows... and let's say I want to start a sound sounding all crappy with my custom filter, and then I want to slowly turn it off revealing the regular audio... how can I do this? When I go to the automation settings for my EQ, I see a million options for scooping highs and lows and such, but isn't there a way to just simply control wet / dry? Like go from 100% wet to 100% dry, thus saving a ton of individual automation tweaks? Any thoughts?

If you send to a bus, you are creating two signals - so yeah, it will be louder.  The key to doing it this way would be to make the send pre-fader, and then bring the fader up while bringing the send down... crossfading them, if you will.
You could also find a Space Designer preset that sounds lofi-ish, there are plenty if you explore the warped category.  Again, you would have to crossfade the wet/dry.
Or, you could set up a MatchEQ.  You can drag in your own curve into the graphic area - some experimention will be required to get your curves right.  Watch the little help tags.  Start by clicking and dragging, do not let go of the button, hold shift to change the Q, let go of shift to move freq/gain.  Once you let go of the mouse button that curve is what it is - you can only add new curves.  You can always reset the curve.
Now when you have your lofi sound how you want it, you can automate the "apply amount" from 100% (or however much) to zero.
Edit to add: you could set up your lofi EQ how you like it, and bounce several seconds of that, then drag that file into the match eq.

  • Space Designer resets Wet + Dry mix amounts when sample dragged

    Hi,
    There is a fairly annoying bug with space designer. Try this:
    1. Insert space designer on a track.
    2. Turn down the DRY mix to zero, and the WET mix to full.
    3. Open the Logic browser, and find a wav file to drag into space designer.
    4. Drag the wav file in.
    You'll see that the dry mix and wet mix reset themselves. This happens each time you drag in a file.
    Am I missing something?

    I guess i would like is to apply effects like reverb or detune that start off suttle and reach a peak i choose and contuniue till i want them to either fade away or stop? i believe this would be some kind of morphing or variable intensity included with an effect.

    To get a similar Wet/Dry effect you could copy the clips to another track and add the full effects to that.  Then use the gain/volume automation to set the level of effects on the track you created.
    In some effects you can set the effect level to 100% and the dry mix to 0% and then just use the tracks Automation to mix the effect. But some effects mix the dry sound without giving you control of how much.  In that case, you may need to adjust the gain/volume automation of the original dry track to match the levels in the mix.
    Ok... I think I got that right...

    I wanna add loads of reverb in a small single moment of my synthesizer melody that i've recorded. How do I do this in the automation menu if you're able to do it there? I've tested like feedback tap and higher it up in the moment i want to have it. Doesen't work..

    You would want to automate the wet/dry mix of the plug-in
    Better yet, put the reverb on a bus/Aux, and automate the send from the synth track going to the reverb Aux... or automate the fader of the Aux track itself...
    those are a few ways to do this

  • A question for the Pros!!!

    Hi everybody,
    First, i'm a LogicExpress user. Not that i want to underestimate the people at the LE forum, but i guessed that i could get a more informative answer over here. In the plug-in PDF manual of LE, they always show the reverb plug-ins with a "mix" parameter of 20 or 50% . If i put it on a buss to use it as a send return, should the mix be 100%? I read somewhere that send-return FXs should be 100%, but does that apply to reverb also? When i do this, i get a lot of reverb with a very small buss amount(send) which is kind of difficult to work with. I find it hard to get a different amount to different instruments or audio tracks since any amount of buss value returns me a lot of reverb.
    I don't know if what i write makes any sense, but if any of you PRO guys or girls have 5 minutes to spare, i could need some light!!! Thanks.

    Yes, reverb on a buss should be set at 100%. This way, you can control the amount going to the individual tracks from the send control. Not that you can't do it the other way, it's just that this is the more common usage.
    This is also the way Logic Pro's Space Designer reverb is implemented. When opened on a track, the direct parameter (akin to a wet/dry parameter) is set on 100%, so that 100% of the direct signal is fed through the reverb.
    When the same reverb is opened on a buss or aux, the direct parameter is automatically set at 0%, meaning no amount of direct signal passes through.
    Logic senses where in the signal chain Space Designer is being used, and adjusts itself accordingly.

  • Monitor off or on?

    Hi,
    Im using GB3 & some Bheringer monitors & a line 6 tone port interface as sound card / guitar simulator.
    getting a good monitoring level is difficult,( guitar not as loud as track) i was told to have monitor off in GB, but having it on seems to boost it, but its very distorted.
    Any clues in this ares?

    So my guess is your monitoring from the tone port. So when you have the monitor off in GB your hearing the guitar dry (before going to GB). When you turn monitoring on you now have a mix of Wet (coming out of GB)and dry. I never used a tone port but there should be some way to control the wet/dry mix on the tone port. Or at least a way to mix live and playback.

  • Does finding putting reverbs on inserts odd make me old?

    I saw another guy (who is 10 years younger than me) work the other day and he was putting reverbs on inserts and adjusting the wet dry mix.
    I thought that was odd because I have always had the approach that (unless you were doing some specific effect) you put reverb on an aux send bus. Compression and EQ and stuff where you want to alter the whole signal goes on inserts.
    Then I thought maybe that is cos I used to use analogue mixers and outboard gear and then computers that could only handle one or two reverb plugins and I was carrying on work practices from previous types of technologies into a new situation in a way that isn't really rational. what do you guys (young and old) think?

    Great observation!
    IMO, heavier utilization of inserts in a DAW is definitely a 'younger generation' thing (myself being part of that 'younger generation').
    As processing power has become less of a concern on modern computer, I would often find myself simply duplicating reverb plug-ins to other track inserts and adjusting the wet/dry mix to suit. I think this method is easier to visualize for those who are used to the DAW environment, as opposed to the 'classic' bussing method.
    That being said, I more recently have found it beneficial to use an aux effects send now that I have a deeper understanding of effects routing. For one, it certainly never hurts to utilize internal signal flow to conserve CPU power. This setup also makes it easier to adjust reverb levels using the bus mix control directly from the timeline window rather than continually jumping between plug-in windows.

  • Reverb/echo sounds disappointing

    Am new to Garage Band (and Mac) - just two weeks... Added reverb to male voice, recorded with internal mic. Although really pleased with GB, I was disappointed with revrb and echo - it sounds thin, and a bit crackly, and even with the slider on 100 per cent, the reverb is not very long. Could not see if I can mix signal and effect. Am I doing something wrong, or is this just a weakness in an otherwise excellent application, and I would be better off buying an external effects unit? Is the disappointing reverb to do with the not very good internal mic, perhaps?

    First of all - I don't think you can really judge the quality of the reverb when using the internal microphone!
    The "Reverb" slider is basically a wet/dry slider, only it adds wet to the dry sound, you can't hear the reverb alone.
    You can vary the Reverb's parameters (that affect the Reverb slider in all tracks) in the Master Track. Additionally, you can add the AUMatrixReverb effect to any of the tracks if you want it to have a different one. Overall, that's a lot of variability, and you should check it with a track that was recorded with a good microphone.

    I haven't figured out how to paint w "depth" yet in CS5.

    It’s called Mixer Brush Tool. Hold LMB over the brush button and voila. Manipulate you impasto needs without limits, wet, slightly wet, dry, how much paint there is on the tip, do you want it to refill after a stroke and so on. You can also set it up to act as a knife if you like.

    What's up. I have always found that using the regular reverb and delays that garageband provides lack depth and also variety. There is only so much to be done with both. About a few months ago I started messing around with the AU effects after realizing they were there haha. I'm also not a person who likes to use the given presets and like to change the levels manually in each. But my question is how to get the best out of each AU effect. By moving each slider through the Wet/Dry mix, small density, frequencies etc., what are the best to keep the quality of a recording but also add a good reverb or delay. I mean I have understood which ones really control the amount of verb or delay and the sound of it are. But it seems the sound of the instrument tends to change and gets a little more treble or the sound becomes muddy and cluttered and I feel it has to do with the frequencies and modulation and so forth. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I am looking to get a verb that gives the impression of a medium sized room with low ceilings that makes the vocals sound somewhat farther away from the mic. Short reverb basically. Also what are AU effect whats the difference.

    It might just be the poor quality of the built-in GB plugins. Nomad has some good plugins that aren't too expensive (www.nomadfactory.com).

  • HT1338 iMac  + USB Superdrive NOT compatible?

    I have a 27"iMac whose internal Superdrive no longer writes DVDs or CDs. I tried cleaning ( Wet + Dry methods) with no success.
    Instead of a costly repair or a possibly botched DIY fix, I had a cunning plan!
    I bought an External USB Superdrive!
    Assuming it would just Plug & Play, I am disappointed to find that it is completely invisible to my iMac!
    I would have thought that a piece of Apple Hardware would be instantly recognised and kicked into life, but no.
    Can anyone help?

    Apple's USB SuperDrive requires more power than is normally allowed for an USB device, and therefore isn't intended for Macs which shipped with an internal one. If you want, you can get it to work by editing one of the computer's plist files.

  • Aux vs effects on track

    Not sure when doing vocals If I should use aux for compressors, verbs, etc or just run up the CPU and attach to individual tracks. When using on an Aux track theirs latency even though I'm using low Latency mode. If there was a guide to aux's and how to set up the tracks I'd be good. Also is there a way to reset all my mixing faders to unity gain in a short cut? Thanks guys

    Reverbs and delays are effects - they add something to the sound. Compressors and EQs are processors - they change the sound. Generally speaking, you want to put effects on auxes since you are likely going to share them between multiple tracks. And generally speaking, processors go on the track itself because you want to change the source, not add to it.
    There are always exceptions of course, the most obvious being parallel compression, where you add a compressed signal to the uncompressed source. You might do this using an aux, or a wet/dry control on the compressor if it has one.
    To reset all faders to unity: select them all in the mixer, drag them to the bottom, then option-click one of them. Option-clicking a fader returns it to unity. When selecting multiple faders, you have to drag them all down to zero first because they will change relative to the one you option-click on.

  • Seriously Annoying Startup Issues

    Having bought my lovely new G5 iSight iMac in mid-November I had lots of fun. That was until 15 days ago when it refused to boot up properly and made noisy fan noises, etc.. (I'm sure you've come across similar things). So I took it the genius bar at the (luckily) reasonably local Apple shop, who identified the problem as a logic board one. So they took it in and replaced the logic board (and according to the recipt did some "Level 2" hardware repair too). After making sure it worked in the shop (and it did), brought it home and have been using it for almost a week.
    Then the problems began again. It randomly turned off during a boot up, but then worked fine whem I tried it again (3 days ago). I then began to have problems with the on button being unresponsive, and it would take a lot of pressing to get it finally to work. I know this isn't a power issue, because I can see the power LED on through the grill in the bottom whenever it's plugged in (2 days ago). I started to have noise fan issues again yesterday but eventually it managed to boot up. But today it is refusing to boot up at all. I always get noisy fan isues and very extended periods before I get to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cog. It will then kernel panic and refuse to turn off unless it is unplugged (noisy fan going all the time). I've tried resetting the SMU and PRAM, with no avail. Booting from a CD won't work and there is nothing other than they keyboard and (mighty) mouse plugged in. I've tried removing my extra RAM but that doesn't seem to help either. One thing that does differ this time from my previous problems, is that the light on the front strobes, which has never happened to me before and I'm assuming cannot be good.
    I'm wondering if they did a propper job of fixing my computer at all. All signs (as far as I can see) point to another logic board issue. I'm not even keeping the computer in a bad enviroment (not too hot/cold, wet/dry, sunlit, infested with savage monkeys etc...) Any help would be much appreciated.
