WGB clients

Recently setup a wireless network with 2 AP 1242 aironets. One as a root ap and the other as a wgb. The root ap is connected to a 871 router ... which is a dhcp server. Providing ip addresses to the root ap and the wgb in client mode.Given this setup if I attach a device to the wgb it should also receive an ip address from the 871 dhcp server. However this has not been the case. Should the wired device (router, pc or switch)have authentication as my wireless devices do ? Could this just be a situation whereby certain devices are not compatiable?

Here is the guide for the WGB. It may help you :

  • WGB-clients problem AP1200

    Hey,
Yesterday i've encounterd a problem with a wireless network on the site. It's a network with 1 AP1200 (8JA2 firmware) and 2 1200 (8JA2 firmware) configured as WGB. For security settings we've used WPA PSK, AES CCMP and ACL.
The network was running fine for 2 weeks, and yesterday the WGB's couldn't associate with the AP. When I tried to associate with my laptop (pcmcia cisco350) I could associate but I couldn't authenticate. I've replaced the AP with another 1200 with the same Firmware and settings.
Everything could now associate but the WGB-clients were not known by the AP, so there was no communication between the WGB-clients and the servers. ARP caching was enabled.
After I turned all the encryption and security off, and rebooted the wgb's and the AP, the WGB-clients appeared in the association table of my ap and the communication was back.
Has anyone encountered this sort of problems?? With this version firmware, 8JA2??
    Greetings

  • 1262 WGB Client Limitation

    Hi all,
I have a 1262 that will be setup as a WGB and wirelessly connect to a Cisco MESH AP.  A switch and clients will hang off of the 1262 WGB.  How many clients can a 1262 WGB support?
    Thanks

The limit is for clients that appear on the root AP table as WGB clients. Those should get ip addresses from same WLAN pool (dhcp or static). The clients behind a router are not counted with the limitation because they don't appear as WGB clients in the root AP table. But note that the WGB connection will be a bottle nick for those clients.

  • Slow roaming for WGB-client (mobile) on AP/WLC!

A customer of mine have previously had 2 AP1242 set up as root-AP and then an additional AP1252 set up as WGB onboard a (very slow) moving vehicle. This has worked very good.
On the vehicle there is 1 "real" PC and 3-4 additional PLCs or such "dumb" equipments with an static IP-address each. All equipment on the vehicle is connected to an unmanaged Layer2-switch.
Now they have extended the WLAN-installation, and replacing the 2 old and added 5 new APs (all lightweight) and a WLC. The vehicle-WGB is also replaced. All new APs and the new WGB is AP2602 and the WLC is a 2504.
After installing the new CAP2602, the WLC2504 ande the new WGB AP2602 on the vehicle they report that the roaming is too slow for the application that controls the vehicle.....  TYhis results in a "Full Stop". Which is rather undesirable!!
I have looked at the configuration of the WGB-AP which is (in principle) unchanged from the AP1252 and also the WLC, But do not see any peculiarities. We also tried to set the channel on all tyhe APs to the same (Meru-style...) but that did not help. The environment of the APs and the vehicle is absolutely guaranteed free from any other interfering WLANs/networks.
Any iseas? I attach the config of the WLC and the WGB.

    Hi
I can see your WLAN configured for both WPA/TKIP & WPA2/AES as authentication suites. I would stick only one (WPA2/AES).
Also to test, I would first check it in open authentication & see if that make any difference.
I think in your WGB configuration you have most recommended settings. Here are some useful notes on WGB configuration

  • Repeater Access Point 1240 works like WGB client

    Hello, i have a problem. In my Network i have 5 Access Point. 4 Aironet 350 and 1 Aironet 1242. IOS for aironet 350 is12.2(13)JA1, E .
Ios for Aironet 1242 is 12.4(10b)JDA3.
Then .. I have an Access Point 350 configured as Access Point/root while all the other Access Point are configured as Repeater/non root.
My problem is that the Cisco Aironet 1242 is the last Access point in the chain, but not work fine.
all the Wifi client connected to Aironet 1242 not access to wired LAN.
I not ping all the Wifi client connected to Aironet 1242.
    p.s.
My Aironet 1242 is seen in the association table of the its parent Access point like WGB_CLIENT.

  • Attach WAP4410N as WGB to Cisco 5760 WLC with LWAP 3702

I have 5760 WLC with 3702 wireless infrastructure. Can i connect a WAP4410N AP as WGB to be attached to my current wifi network so i can provide connectivity to some wired devices? Any tips on doing so? And any limitation can be imposed for using this WAP instead of any other AP that are supported by WLC5760? If the wired clients are passive, configuring passive-client on WLC will work normally?

Thanks Eric for the reply, however, this AP is not expected to be controlled by WLC as you mentioned since it is not lightweight and not supported by this WLC for compatibility. But in this scenario, i'm talking about operating it in WGB mode to be attached to the unified wireless infrastructure. In this scenario, it is just attached as a client that pass the traffic of its clients to the other side.
I have noticed the below statement in this guide page (539)
    http://hcsdemo.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3650/software/release/37e/consolidated_guide/b_37e_consolidated_3650_cg.pdf
When non-Cisco WGBs are used, the switch has no information about the IP address of the clients on the wired segment behind the WGB. Without this information, the switch drops the following types of messages:
    • ARP REQ from the distribution system for the WGB client.
    • ARP RPLY from the WGB client.
    • DHCP REQ from the WGB client.
    • DHCP RPLY for the WGB client.
Accordingly, if the switch will drop all this traffic, then no traffic will be passed from the WGB clients to the network ! what I’m missing here?!!!

  • Dual Radio WGB and LWAPP Controller

    Hallo everyone,
I have a wireless network managed by a 4402 controller with this sw version : 5.2.178.0
The client wants to add a stand alone wgb (cisco 1242 with an ios 12.4(21) ). The standalone ap associate to an LWAPP AP using the 5Ghz interface and propagate the same ssid at 2.4Ghz (I've also tried using a different ssid ). Actually the WGB is the only AP using that SSID at 2.4Ghz. As for the wired clients of the WGB I have no problems but if the client associate to the 2.4 Ghz SSID, I see it associated on the controller but no traffic from or to the client is allowed.
If for any case, the 5Ghz interface is resetted and the association betweeen the WGB and the controller is reformed, the 2.4Ghz client starts receiving and receiving traffic.
Any idea how to set things up from the the first association?
The wgb ssid is not set as infrastructure-client and the controller correclty identify it as a WGB client. In the same way the controller correclty see the 2.Ghz client like a wired client of the WGB but unless the association b.t.w the WGB and the controller is reset, no traffic reach the client.
I think that may be a problem related to how the IAPP protocol notify the presence of a client to WGB but I don't know how to work things out.. any idea?
    Thank you in advance!

The 3600 series Access Points can have either internal or external antennae.  You can tell by looking at the top of the AP.  If there are 4 antenna connections (one in each corner) then they are external antennae.
If you cannot get to the AP to check them physically, the antenna type is also denoted by the part number.
    AIR-CAP3602I-x-K9 has internal antennae
    AIR-CAP3602E-x-K9 has external antennae
The 3600 does have dual radios built in, operating in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency ranges.  However, for them to show up as such, you have to enable both radios on the AP.  You can do this either through the WebUI or the CLI.
The 802.11ac option is an external module that is attached to the underside of the 3600 AP.  Please find the datasheet for the module here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps12859/ps13128/data_sheet_c78-727794.html
The 1552c Series access points are also dual-radio systems and should also have both radios turned on through the WebUI or CLI.  Note the quote " The Cisco Aironet 1552C/1552CU Outdoor Mesh Access Points are dual-radio systems with DOCSIS 3.0/EuroDOCSIS 3.0 (8x4 HFC) compliant cable modem for power and backhaul." taken from the datasheet for these APs found here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5679/ps11451/data_sheet_c78-641373.html
Cisco ships the APs with one Radio enabled and if you want the dual-radio functionality, you have to turn that on.  Once that is done, you should see the APs show up correctly in the WLC 5508.

  • WGB association/re-association timing

    Hi Guys,
Just want to ask a question:  what is the acceptable association or reassociation time for the WGB?
Our environment is on a shipyard, and AP's are mounted on a light mast around 30 meters high, and our WGB clients are mounted on the cranes, these cranes are moving around the area.  The cranes are around 15 meters high.  We are implementing Cisco LEAP.   I have noticed that the association or re-association timing of some of our WGB clients are taking around 50 seconds and some are more than 60 seconds before it was able to re-associate to another AP.
So in this case, is this a normal condition?

    Hi Kaye,
This issue is only happening to some but not all WGB Clients.  We did some site survey just using the netstumbler on the crane level and was able to see some rogue AP's, however their signal strength is not that strong at around -90 to -100 dbm.  Could this rogue AP's caused this issue to happen?  What are other external factors that may contribute to this interference?
    Thanks!

  • Use of Cisco Aironet AP1242AG as a wireless client

Hi guys! I am in possession of two cisco Access points (AP1242AG) and I would like to use them to replace my current configuration (in the first picture) in our family home. Currently I have two Asus Eee boxes that act as "repeaters".
It works so far, but it is not so stable and increases the latency. I tried to setup one of the Cisco access points as repeater, but without success.
It says that cisco repeater communicates only with Cisco equipment.
My second idea was to try something most simple. I disabled the security settings on D-link router and tried to setup the AP1242 as Universal Workgroup Bridge client, where Radio0 would connect to Router D-LINK 600, and crossover cable would connect AP1242 and the Asus Box.
I managed to configure trough HyperTerminal, and it did associate (Cisco with D-Link), I was able to see the Cisco Web interface over LAN on that asus box, however I was not able to access internet. Then I tried to enable the other Radio1, and set it up as Access point and bridge those two radios, but that did not help either.  What am I doing wrong?
This is actually how I would like to have it: Radio0 as Universal WGB client, and Radio1 as Access Point.
If that is not an option, i could connect the asus box with LAN cable to AP1242 and make it act as Virtual AP.
3rd option, is to connect two Cisco Access Points together with LAN cable. One of the would connect to Router as Universal WGB, and the other would be what it supposed to be - Access Point
The reason why I would like to use Cisco in this role is because I believe that cisco has better output power (send/receive) and it would be more stable, and possibly faster. If you have any better idea how I could use this 2 access points, feel free to suggest. It is a shame to have them in my drawers instead od using them.
I attached pictures of 3 possible scenarios, and current configuration of the AP1242AG #1
I am new to Cisco equipment, so I really thank you for your time and help!

    Thanks for the response.
Everything works fine if I use your suggested setup but I need the TC in the office, and the DSL modem downstairs. An ethernet connection is not possible this way, and the printer in the living room isn't really a nice piece of furniture
I think, there is no possibility to use the wireless as uplink and the TC as a router/DHCP-server...
Probably I need a server computer to handle the connection between the wireless LAN created by the DSL modem and an ethernet network managed by the TC.
Hopefully someone has an idea/solution that fixes my problem.
    meanwhile I keep looking......

I have purchased a Cisco AP 2602i-C-K9 with standalone feature and IOS  ap3g2-k9w7-xx.153-3.JAA . Unable to find a way how to setup WPA2-Personal.
    How can i configure this

    Hi
Refer this post where AAP1 configured as RADIUS server for a WGB client using EAP-FAST method.
    http://mrncciew.com/2013/04/28/wgb-with-eap-fast/
In your case if you follow config without "infrastructure-SSID" & "infrastructure-client" commands you should be able to connect normal clients.
Here is another reference post for the same
    http://mrncciew.com/2013/03/03/autonomous-ap-as-local-radius-server/
Depend on the software code you running, other methods of EAP may be supported.

  • AP1231G in WGB mode how does client-vlan work?

I am trying to get an AP1231G in WGB mode to talk to an AP1231G in AP mode. Trunking works to the AP. The WGP associates with AP. I am assuming that workgroup-bridge client-vlan 10 effectively puts the ethernet port on the WGB on to VLAN 10. Do VLANs need to be enabled on the WGB? Does the WGB have to associate with a SID that is on VLAN 10 on the AP. Does this have any effect on the native vlan on the WGB. Has any one got a configuration similar to this that works? I will be happy to post the config files if any one is interested.

Logically speaking, I think yes. VLANs need to be enabled on the WGB too. So that a client with SSID A will be assigned to vlan A and so on. This doesn't have any effect on the native vlan of WGB. But, ensure that the vlans you configure are allowed on the appropriate switch ports along with trunking.

  • Wgb - how many clients on ethernet Lan

I am considering configuring a 1242ag as either a WGB / non-root bridge, I have read that a WGB can have only 8 clients on its ethernet lan side, and does not associate with wireless clients other then the root-bridge/AP. Can someone confirm this for me?

thought to just post the answer, as I have already found it, for anyone else who might want to know.
    Q. How many devices can the Workgroup Bridge support?
    A. The Workgroup Bridge supports up to eight MAC addresses on the wired Ethernet segment. But, when a 1200 series access point works as a Workgroup Bridge, it can handle up to 254 clients on the Ethernet side, while it presumes that no other wireless clients are associated to the root bridge/AP to which this AP in WGB mode is associated.
But, keep in mind that when the AP acts in a WGB mode, the AP takes on the association at the client level, which means it is not a true bridge. So it is always advisable to limit the users to a small or reasonable number.

The simple answer is yes - the only thing that could change the way they are configured is - are you AP's LWAPP or Autonomous
