WGB & light weight Access Point

Hello Experts,
Need your suggestion, though I have gone through some documents the solution does not work as per my requirement as below. Still to confirm.
I wants to use LAP in flex connect mode & standalone access Point to act as WGB. However, as my standalone AP is dual band I want to use 5GHZ for backbone & 2.4 GHZ for my wireless users can it be possible?
Or, over the same backbone can I pass multiple VLAN traffics ? as I, have read it as client after configuring the WGB in standalone so, it should not work !!!
Thanks in advance!!
Lenka...

Yes, you can configure the 5Ghz to handle your "backhaul" if you will from WGB to FlexConnect LAP.  Just make sure that only 5GHz has the "station-role workgroup-bridge" configured.  2.4GHz radio will keep the station-role root, for your client access.
The second question; multiple VLANs.  Customer facing documentation is conflicting, but newer documentation shows this should work.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/interfaces-modules/wireless-lan-controller-module/115752-mesh-wgb-00.html
On the WLC, make sure you enable WGB Vlan support
>config wgb vlan enable
On the WGB you will need to make sure you have the SSID setup with
# workgroup-bridge unified-vlan-client
and then make sure you have all your applicable sub-interfaces on radio and Ethernet.

  • Light weight access point, vlans, multiple ssids

    Hi everybody
Let say we have an light weight access point ap1.  Ap1 is broadcasting two ssids:
cisco1  which is mapped to vlan 1
cisco 2  which is mapped to vlan 2
If ap1 is using channel 6 for cisco 1, does it mean ap1 will also use same channel i.e channel 6 for cisco2?
thanks and have a great weekend.

Lightweight WAP right?  As in controller-based WAP?
If this is the case, then the answer is both a yes and a no.
    Let me explain:
Throw away the notion that you can set the channel down.  I mean, if you have a controller-based WAP, the last thing you want to do is "micro-manage" which channels your WAPs operate on.   I mean, you can but as a rule-of-thumb, you don't and let the controller sort things out.
So, going back to your question:  You whave multiple WAPs and two SSID:  1 and 2.  Let's presume that you've configured that all your WAPs will be broadcasting SSID 1 and SSID 2.
The decision about what channels each WAP will be operating on falls squarely on the Wireless LAN Controller (WLC).  The WLC makes this decision based on a blah-blah-blah algorythm.  If, for example, WAP A and, say, WAP R can "hear" each other on the same channel, the WLC will make the decision and say, "Hey WAP R, since you and WAP A are operating in the same channel and both of you can hear each other, why don't you, WAP R, operate in channel 11.".
However, if WAP A and WAP R can't see each other then both of them can operate in the same channel.
NOW, here's comes the tricky question ... Here's the scenario:  You have SSID 1 and SSID 2.  You want all your WAPs to broadcast both SSID.  HOWEVER, you want SSID 1 to operate at, say, 1 Mbps rate only while SSID 2 can operate at all other data rates.
Yes, this can be done using RF Profile and AP Groups.
Is this what you are asking?

  • Alert notification for down light weight access point?

Hello! Is there a way to get a notification when a lightweight access point goes down? I recently introduced WiSM in my wireless LAN and keeping track of the access point status is a challenge.
    Thanks in advance!

Good to know, I have that and just didn't see a need to install it yet since I have only two controllers. I thought still manageable. Anyway, if it will give me the notification then I will put in production ASAP.
Thank you so much for all the reponses. :)

I don't believe so, but clearly you wouldn't want too many.

  • Need to admin disable 802.11a radio from a few light weight access points

    Hi team,
I need help to admin disable the 802.11a radio interface from a few lightweight APs. The operational status of these radio interfaces is down, so I am getting the following error when I try to disable them from the wireless LAN controller.
    (Cisco Controller) config>802.11a disable wds2.hyd.shaw.net
This slot is not operational because Regulatory Domain Check has failed! Unable to disable the Cisco AP.
Could you please let me know how I can administratively disable the 802.11a radios on these APs? Please let me know if you need more details here.
    Regards,
    Swati

The two previous posts are correct: the regulatory domain is probably not allowing radio a to be enabled.
To be sure about this you can go to GUI of the wireless LAN controller > Wireless > Country. Here your country (or region) should be selected. Then depending on the access points that you have they may or may not join or turn on the radio. Per example if you have an access point from Europe (like AIR-AP1131AG-E-K9) then you will have a conflict if only the “America” regulatory domain (-A) is selected.
Here is a link with a list of products and their regulatory domain that might help:
    http://tools.cisco.com/squish/648C8
What you can do here is to simply allow the regulatory domain that the access point needs and you should not have any problems.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you change the regulatory domain and use an access point that transmit at certain channels and frequencies that are not allowed (illegal) in your country (region) you may have legal implications.
I hope this information helps you with your concern.

  • Upgrading Access Point

Can anyone help me to upgrade the autonomous access point to light weight mode?
    AP : Cisco 1120
Should i give controller credentials ?
I have tried with Upgrade Tool and it is not happening,Also i am not getting any error.
Can anyone help me quickly ?
    Regards,
    Senthil

    Hi,
Yes you should give controller credentials for time synchronization. Does your 1120 have a MIC or SSC? You might need to add the certificate to the system if it is old enough to have SSC.
If it is in the same subnet as the controller, you might want to try to use a tftp server and try the archive download command from the AP.
Which version of the upgrade tool do you use?
What do you see on the AP console?

    Q:
I’ve the 1140 AP (LAP) flavor; can I convert it to Standalone access points?
If yes can you please explain how and if you have documentation that will be great.
Thank you all for reading and helping.

You can convert the AP from autonomous AP (aAP) to light-weight AP (LWAP) and vice versa.  It all boils down to the IOS you run.
If you have a WLC, ollow the proceedure below:

  • Cisco aironet access-point keep asking username/password

    Hi all,
Some of my access-points (Light Weight) just keep asking username/passwords when accessed through web and clicked on any option available there. Any idea why that happens?
    Thanks in advance!
    Gaurav

Some of my access-points (Light Weight) just keep asking username/passwords when accessed through web and clicked on any option available there. You sure it's LWAP?  The reason why I'm asking because you would NOT be able to access an LWAP over HTML because it's LWAP.

  • An Error Occurred while trying to join "my wireless access point"

    Hi,
I've been using wireless access for a year and never had a problem connecting.
But starting yesterday I get a +*An Error Occurred while trying to join "my wireless access point", Please try again.+* Message.
I have 2 Mac's and have no problem connecting with the other one. It’s just the IMac.
I tried everything including resetting router, changing password, adding a $ to the password, accessing without password, deleting the whole air port and create a new one, but still getting the same message.
I might need to add, while I was working with the IMac I didn’t use wireless for a few hours, but when I got back to my browser I noticed that I was connected to a different wireless service. (FONFREEINTERNET if it matters) I have no idea why, since I didn’t change it.
Anyways, I tried to switch back to my access point, but it wouldn’t let me. It’ll just give me the +*An Error Occurred while trying to join "my wireless access point", Please try again.+* Message.
Funny is when I use the FONFREEINTERNET access point the internet seems to work fine.
I could look up Google without a problem, but when I tried to connect to Facebook for example it won’t let me. Instead a FONFREEINTERNET page will pop up with some options on how to pay! (by minute/or day/or week…)
I get the strange feeling that they planted some kind of bug/virus!!!
I don’t know what else to do.
Anyone knows that problem? What can I do?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    I researched on FONFREEINTERNET, there’s a spot close to my house/guess that’s the one I used…
http://maps.fon.com/ ZIP CODE 904-0113 and you’ll see a coffee pod, which is about 2 minutes walk from my house.

    Hello Tesserax,
I get the same error message again...
I tried the 3 suggested steps again, but unfortunately it did not work.
After a Restart, Sleep or just the awaking from Screensaver mode I’m disconnected from my wireless Network anymore.
Even if the Computer was asleep for just a second!
I am able to fix the problem temporarily with Network Preferences → Assist me → Diagnostics
Choose Airport → Choose network → Enter Password (Even if I check safe password it’ll ask me every time) → and than usually all lights on the left menu switch from red to green and I get the popup message “A Network Change has been detected. Your Internet seems to work fine.” (similar - I’m at work and don’t remember exactly)
And it works fine…until the screensaver comes on or it sleeps again
I have the Problem with my IMac and Mini but the IMac at least remembers my password…
    Any Ideas
I’m connected through a Buffalo WZR2-G300N wireless router

  • How to use Home Hub 3 as a 2nd router(access point...

Hi guys hope you can help; I am trying to add my Home Hub 3 as a 2nd router (ie an access point) to my home network and struggling.
What am I trying to achieve.
I have a fully functioning home network which is working great but the wireless range does not extend to the room above my garage, some distance away from the main house. I currently service it with an Ethernet link from my E4200 router, via the mains wiring, to link to a PS3 there. But I want to extend this to have a wireless network in the remote room so I can link multiple devices - rather than spend more money, deploying a 2nd router which I already have  is preferable.
    What have I got.
I have a Linksys E4200 router (nice piece of kit) attached to my ADSL line via a Belkin N1 wireless modem-router set to  “modem only” mode (I was using a DSL modem until yesterday but that went AWOL and digging out the Belkin router I saw that it had a modem only function – and it/they worked first time )
All of my gear in the house is attached wirelessly to the E4200 which is delivering circa 11.5mbps from a maximum of 12.5mbps for the line measured by BT onsite. So  all is  fine there.
What have I done to try and use the HH3
Linked an Ethernet cable between one of the Ethernet ports on the E4200 to a mains plug.
Linked an Ethernet cable from a mains plug to one of the Ethernet ports on the HH3 router.
Ie as the PS3 was linked.
    3.  Switched on the HH3 router: the power light is solid blue, the wireless light is solid blue, the broadband light is off
    4. Connected my laptop to the HH3 network and loading up a web page on IE9 displays a web page from bthomehub.home/etc etc with title BT Home Hub and a message “Can’t connect to Broadband”. It is the start of a self- diagnostic routine. Answering all the questions I eventually get a Home Hub Administrative Home Page displayed.
Is there a quicker way of getting to this admin page??
    5.  I switched off DHCP
I changed the IP address from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.1.200 as this seems to be what the other threads on this subject did.
When I went to apply the change a message came up telling me that I might not be able to access the HH3. I ploughed on disregarding this and needless to say I could not then access the HH3 via the web interface and trying to access a web site nothing happened.
    6.  I did a hardware reset on the HH3
    7. Going through the motions again, when I got to the admin pages again, I switched off DHCP and this time left the IP address alone, ie 192.168.1.254.
When I went to apply this  I got the message
“After changing these settings you will need to renew the IP address of all devices connecting to your BT Home Hub. Please follow the instructions provided with your devices.”
I applied the change – but have not yet done any fooling around with IP addresses on my laptop because I don’t want to start mucking around with my laptop
I then tried to access a website, and failed, but on this occasion rather than nothing happening, the Home Hub website came up  again displaying the error message page.
And that is where I stand. All looks so easy when reading other threads on this and other forums but it is not working for me.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
The IP settings on the E4200 are
    IP  192.168.1.1
    Range  192.168.1.100  to 192.168.1.149
Also connection type on the E4200 is POE not POA – as far as I  recall that is what it needed to be to connect to the DSL modem and work.

    Thanks for the speedy reply!
I have actually came across this page before - I seem to hit a snag when I connect the repeater hub (my HH3).  As outlined, I have at all times kept the repeater hub connected via ehternet into one of the regular LAN ports to my main HH5.
But when I connect my laptop to the repeat hub (HH3), I am actually connected to the internet somehow (I assuem using the HH5 network) but under my network connections it says I am connected to the HH3.  As a result, when I go to the homehub settings page 192.168.1.254, it brings me to the main HH5 settings page and not the repeater HH3.
According to the instructions it says I should "Ignore the not connected page", but I am connected and I cant seem to alter any of the settings on my HH3 while it is connected to the HH5.
    Any other pointers?
    Thanks!

  • AirPort Extreme (5th Gen) WiFi access point disappears but wired ethernet is ok

My AirPort Extreme SSID and access point "disappear" randomly from available WiFi networks. I had a 1st gen AirPort Extreme and never had this problem until earlier this year. I thought it might be a failing radio in the 1st gen unit so I used it as a good excuse to get a 5th gen AirPort extreme about 3 months ago. Same problem has been occuring; unfortunately it is random and I cannot get a handle on what/when/why it is happening.
For example, my iPhone 4S was connected to the network at about 1700 today and when I next checked the phone around 2115, no wifi connection and my network was not listed in the WiFi connections. The base station is away from other wireless devices (mouse, keyboard) and is about 10 feet from the nearest PC and monitor. Both printers are accessed via ethernet, not wifi. The strange and puzzling thing is that the PC, which is connected by ethernet to the AirPort Extreme, is still connected to the internet (I can browse, check email, newsgroups, etc.).
When I run the AirPort Utility, the base station is identified (AirPort Extreme 802.11n 5th Generation), there is an appropriate IP address, Version 7.6 firmware, and MAC address is listed. However, when I attempt to Continue or do a Manual Setup, I'm prompted for the admin password, the progress bar moves during 'reading from the Apple wireless device. Please wait...,' and then the utility reports "An error occured while tryong to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6722.
If I unplug, wait, and reattach the power to the base station, WiFi becomes available again. When the WiFi connection "disappears", the LED light is solid green.
Any insights are appreciated; please let me know other helpful information I can provide.
    Scott

I have the exact same problem and it's driving me nuts.
I bought an airport extreme n last week and plugged it in, hooked it up to my adsl router by Ethernet, configured it to set up a new wifi network and got the green light. I use an iPhone 4, iPad 2, and Windows 7 PC with an N wifi adaptor.
The airport works fine for about 2 hours before the wireless network disappears without a trace. Green light remains on the base station and I can connect fine by Ethernet.
    "it just don't make sense"
    I hope it's not a windows-7-only thing, Apple.
PS. Updated firmware to the newest version, no difference.
Airport is near to a wireless phone so I set a specific wireless channel and frequency to prevent a clash. No change.

  • WRT310N as a "Wireless Access Point"

    Hello,
I am in the market for a wireless device to add to an existing subnet.  I see many tutorials regarding routers as wireless access points, but I am not sure if this device will work.
My plan is to connect one of the switch ports to an existing switch and not use/configure the WAN port.
I would rather purchase a router then a true WAP do to the fact that it can also act as a router (should I need it later), whereas a WAP cannot.
Any thoughts on this is appreciated.

Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable
to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug
in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Open the setup page of router using 192.168.1.1 then put in the
password as admin...all you need to do is do the wireless settings such
as Radio Band Frequency to Standard 20 MHZ frequency, channel to 11.
Also, the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
    thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet
Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • IPad's Roaming Between Access Points

A company with 460 Cisco Access Points is using iPad Mini's to control lighting and other things, the iPad Mini's are roaming between access points VERY SLOW, they are dropping 45-50 packets between roams. iPad 2's and iPhone's are roaming just fine, if they drop any packets it's a max of 5.
Is there any differance in the NIC's that are in iPad 2's and iPad Mini's? Or is there a setting for fast roaming?

    Hi,
It seems that these APs are not aware of each other, I would suggest you look into a controller based solution, that means you need some sort of controller base AP system to get this seamless roaming feature, I also suggest you check whether there's compatibility
issue for the device with product vender.
