Isn´t it weird that by 2008 Apple still hasn´t added a working, comprehensive backup/restore/migrate feature in Mail? It feels like NOTHING has happened for 10yrs...
There are few things that are as important to most people as their mail-correspondance.

Missing Songs Using Itunes 7 Backup/Restore Feature

Using iTunes 7 for Windows Backup feature (File->Backup to Disc...) I backed up my entire iTunes library to DVDs. I then used the "restore" feature to duplicate my library on a second computer. iTunes said it completely "restored" my library, but I have noticed that a number of songs/artists are not on the second computer but in my orginial library. So my question(s) is had anyone else found iTunes not backing up all their files and if so found a solution for it other than manually backing them up. I can't think of a reason iTunes would backup only 80% of my songs but think it did all of them. The first songs I noticed missing from the backup was the "compliations" folder.

Well your first question. Yes it backs up all info.
Second, yes you can use it to restore a mac also.
I believe it will restore to whatever you have your music folder set to in preferences.
When i backed up my music, my podcasts were all where they should be. I think your podcast subscriptions are saved to your account when u subscribe. Hope that answers your questions

About incremental backup/restore

I current have 6 master nodes with about 150G data, and I want to migrate them to a new store with 2 master nodes. My plan is:
(1) take a snapshot online and load the .jdb files to new store, which may takes a really long time.
(2) stop the online application and take another snapshot.
(3) rsync the .jdb files to new server and ONLY load the changed ones (compare with step 1) to the new store instead of loading them all again.
is that ok?

You should not try to change the store topology in this fashion. You should instead migrate from old to new by moving K/V pairs (records).

Basic questions about config backup/restore

I've searched around with limited success. I've just inherited the Ironport devices in our enviornment and need to perform an OS upgrade of our cluster. Prior to doing so, I want to backup each members config file. (also, I want to do this before doing any config changes)
If I back up each member's config to the device, how I can access/edit these config files so I can replaced the masked password fields with the actual passwords?
I'm aware of the unmasked/hashed password version of the file, but we'd like to avoid that if we can.

The config file itself is just a text/xml file and most good text editors (vi/textpad) will handle it easily.
Even when passwords are not masked, they are always encrypted. The only way to manually insert a password would be to encrypt it and put the result back in the config file.
As long as you are choosing strong passwords (hint) it is not at all an easy task to force decrypt the hashed password string. Even if you are completely paranoid, just store the config file somewhere in an encrypted format.
Bottom line: don't mess up your "backup" by manipulating it in a way that could render it useless just when you most need it. Manual editing of config files is tricky and AFAIK not officially supported in any way.

IPhone Backup / Restore questions

Maybe this has been covered here, but I am confused about backing up the data on my new iPhone -
1) When iTunes says "backing up iPhone" before the sync . . . what is it backing up? Contacts? Music? Pictures? Applications?
2) What does Restore do? It seems to indicate you will lose all of your data on the phone if you run restore.
3) If I replace my phone . . . or Apple does at some point for a battery . . . will the Backup/Restore features in iTunes restore all of my contacts, music, pictures and applications to the new phone?
While most things with the iPhone seem pretty intuitive, this whole process has me confused.

The backup that is created and maintained by iTunes stores data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, SMS messages, notes created with the Notes application, recent calls, call favorites, data created and stored by 3rd party applications, and photos captured by your iPhone.
No need to backup iTunes content since your iTunes content remains on your computer and should be included with your computer's backup.
Regarding contact information and calendar events, the iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. The exception to this is with an Exchange account or MobileMe account, which provides for over the air syncing with this data.
With Vista, you can sync contact information and calendar events with Outlook 2003 or 2007, or Windows Contacts for contact information.
A Restore completely erases your iPhone followed by re-installing the current firmware version. After the current firmware version is re-installed, you are prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup (which is the default selection), or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
This must be followed by a sync with iTunes to re-transfer data not included with your iPhone's backup such as all iTunes content, 3rd party applications, contact information, calendar events, bookmarks, and photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.

This feature is vital when wanting to delete or transfer ALL files in a stored location on the phone or SD card.
If you have for example 100 songs or pictures or documents saved and you want to delete all in one hit, then you would just go in to that folder, for example, just the picture folder if you want to delete all pictures and then you would press >
( SELECT ALL ) and all the contents of that folder you selected would be deleted, in the same way, you can also click on > ( SELECT ALL ) on the contents of that folder to transfer those contents in one hit using Bluetooth to another mobile device or computer.
At this moment when you use a BlackBerry 10 device, this feature is not there and you need to go in to that folder and manually select each and every item that you want to delete or transfer, one item at a time, which is very time consuming and frustrating.
Does anyone at BlackBerry know if this >
( SELECT ALL ) feature will be available for the BlackBerry 10 operating system in the near future in a software update ?

As for "select all" that would be nice but haven't heard anything about it coming. It's not in 10.3.1.

PC Suite 6.81.13 - Backup/Restore

So - I've got the new PC Suite..
Tried to Backup - it gets to 100% and then does nothing..
Just stays there!
Doesnt actually finish backing up..

That's the information I got when I call up the customer service because I have problem transfering data in Nokia 6230i into Nokia 6233...since I've no idea whether to use backup/restore or sync. (I talk to four different guy and four of them doesn't advise the same thing...it's like they teach according to their personal experience and not something by default...I wonder why izzit so.)
Backup completed at 100% with error that some data could not be backup due to right protected i.e. theme, tone. Fine with that, I proceed with restore but serious error pop up when i just click RESTORE. There are big memory in N6233 but unfortunately nothing could be restore due to lack of memory. Huh? So, I called nokia service and I was told the it happened because configuration in both phones differs...(Then, why I was advised to use backup/restore feature?)
So, I sync. I think it works out ok but just hmm...not satisfied coz items like photos, mp3 etc. have to be transfer from N6230i phone browser to a folder in My Doc, and then when N6233 is connected, transfer it all into N6233 phone browser. I can live with that but the contact part! Phew! N6230i phonebook has got some contacts (say M,N,O and P), it was not transfer to N6233 thru sync. So, I thought try look in the phone browser BUT IT'S NOT THERE, how could that be possible?
Kinda tired about this thing...continue later...Lastly, though the software kinda break my neck, thanz to all the advises given today. Really appreaciate that though it doesn't turn out that good.

We've got a user that accidently deleted sub pages.
What kind of backup/restore procedures could be
followed to allow us to selectively restore not only
page groups, but sub-pages, etc. We'd like to get
granular on this.
What is recommended procedure?

Backup restore Boot Camp partitions by Disk Utilities

Hello,
I am new to MAC world and need to know about the backup & restore procedures of Boot Camp Partitions;
I want to make a disk image of my FAT32 Partition like Acronis Ture Image or similars. ( in case of any problem i would able to restore my system without waisting time in reinstalling windows and other software programs etc on both MAC OS & Windows sides.)
please guide me if it is possible by using Mac DISK UTILITIES or by some other programs.
My Curent MAC Config are;

Backup/Restore App -- stores backups where? "Delete record" does what?

I had used the Backup/Restore app under 4.1.x to backup the table to itself. Upon installing the 4.2.2 update, there was some message about did I want to delete unusable 4.1 Backups? IIRC, I said no. Went into the App to make sure I knew what I was about to "delete" and did a "Delete Backup Record".
Concern is that free storage changed much less than I expected. Not sure how big the backup would have been but it sure took a lot longer to write than only the hunderd or so MB freed up would suggest.
Any idea where the locally stored backups are stored ? Went looking with Astro and found nothing obvious...
Anybody can confirm "Delete Backup Record" actually deletes the backed-up data not just the metadata of it having been done?

Backups are stored in the folder ".semc-fullbackup" on the internal storage or SD-card. This is a hidden folder so you need to select Show hidden files in Astro.
Deleting a backup from Backup & restore show remove all files in that backup.

Error in connection tells me I have to restore my iPod. What about my apps!

I've probably spent over $30 on apps and all of the sudden itunes will not read my ipod and says I need to restore it to factory settings! What about the money I spent on those apps?! *(Before you ask, I have tried it on other computers but always get the same message) PLEASE HELP

You'll have to download them one by one, unless you have a backup of the Mobile Applications Folder and copy this one back to your computer.
If iTunes can connect to your ipod again, transfer purchases.

Question about backup/restores.

I'm getting ready to backup my dev server and restore what i need on my production server for the first time. What I want to know is if I do a backup/restore in the future to add more to the production server will the restore overwrite the content
that has been add to the on the production server?

Edit: What I'm trying to do is push the ground work to the production server from dev, and then add updates and modules along the way without losing content on the production server.

What doesn't iTunes backup? Backup\restore resolves network comm problem

What doesn't iTunes backup? An app of mine is having issues with certain communications, and backup/restore resolves issue. Deleting and re-downloading the app doesn't resolve. This isn't acceptable solution, so I want to know what isn't backed up to figure out what is going on.

An interesting scenario. I thought deleting the app deleted everything, not only the app filesystem but NSUserDefaults, associated keychain items, etc. Does it matter whether you delete the app in iTunes or on the device?

It's great you keep adding shiny new "newsworthy" features ... but what about fixing long-standing bugs/issues and addressing the basics that have been missing since the the beginning?
WHAT ABOUT LEAVING PASTED CLIPS SELECTED after a Paste operation in the Timeline?!? Like every other app in the world?
What about leaving a complex selection of clips intact after an UNDO operation? (This costs me hundreds of minutes a week.) Like every other app in the world?
What about allowing "." as an abbreviation for "00" when entering timecode?
What about letting the renaming of a clip in a bin be reflected in timelines?
What about a "reduce project" option? (To remove all items not used by selected sequences, like Ae.)
What about actually useful clip labels (colors) which link between timeline items and their respective clips in the bin? (Like Avid & FCP) So we can mark certain clips a certain color in a bin and have that color be reflected in timelines?
What about being able to close the title tool with a shortcut, not just a tiny 4x4 button?
What about fixing the title tool so it's kerning/leading shortcuts are NOT the exact opposite of EVERY OTHER CC application?
What about a simple "Select Media Relatives" command, like in FCP and Avid?
What about fixing the audio scrub toggle shortcut so that it works without having to play or use the mouse?
What about a shortcut for "Reveal in Finder" from the Timeline? It's in the context menu -- why no shortcut?

I am curious about the time you waste ...and wonder what and why you are doing it... that causes this loss of efficiency.
