¿What about adapting MsWord into ID?

This post is related to how to confront or (un)manage large portions of text, coming from Word.
First scenario
[Almost perfect... although it happens 5% in the daily life].
Procedure: Simply you apply your main body style to the incoming word galley and immediately the whole text is converted, preserving italics and bold characters.
Pros: You get an instant translation
Cons: You may lose styles previously tagged originally in word (headings, quoted text, etc). To avoid this you have to check these styles and step by step convert them to the new style in InDesign.
Second scenario
[The waste time and it covers 95% of importing procedures]
Situation: You apply the body text (or else) and the text does not change at all.
Procedure (devastating): First, you have to «save» italics (may be bold, also necessary) and tag them with a temporary character style. Immediately you apply your main style (body text) to the whole text.
As text has not changed (sometimes perhaps small and irregular portions) now you are in scenario 2 and the style appears with the sign (+). With keyboard option you reapply the style and obviously all the text is converted. But here happen many accidents: lost of formatting, superscripts, footnotes, etc.
Pros: You finally obtain a reasonable text translation.
Cons: A lot of time has been invested creating unnecessary character styles. Or styles coming from word may disappear when this procedure is applied. But is the only method to really govern (tag) a text that is so reluctant to import in perfect conditions.
Why? Why this situation appears so fickle, almost to the wrong side? Convert .doc to rtf is not a clue, neither. No script until this moment appears to be an elixir. Sometimes you have to implement absurd temporary methods (like changing each font in the coming test from word, like Verdanas, Arials Times, Times New Roman, Calibris +regular+italics+bold, etc).
Conclusion: the daily tragedy repeated day after day.

That would be applicable to
Procedure (devastating): First, you have to «save» italics (may be bold, also necessary) and tag them with a temporary character style. Immediately you apply your main style (body text) to the whole text.
I deal with two kinds of customers: the ones that use our in-house way of marking up text for paragraphs -- local formatting doesn't need special markup --, and people that barge in, throw stuff on my desk, and run away.
For the former, we have a few scripts that first save local formatting (that's "preptext"), and then another that does all paragraph stuff (relying on their own markup), and another that does table stuff. Plug in pictures, book is ready. Less than a day work. Formatting errors are their own.
For the latter, I run the same save-local formatting script, but before that, I check all fonts and most of the local formatting (you'd be surprised how many people use bold italic underlined spaces when there should be, er, just a space; or underline a + to get ±; or superscript an o to get a degree). Then I go through the document, paragraph by paragraph, applying the correct styles one by one. None of that "apply main to all"! You might loose important visual cues that do get imported, such as left-and-right indenting text, which ought to be formatted as a quote. Since I have assigned hotkeys to all major styles years ago, I can go through an entire book in, well, about a day. It then takes some more time to finish the regular stuff, and it also happens that I make formatting errors myself. On the other hand, these clients usually have tons of rewrites, so my errors sort of disappear in the overall calculation.
(preptext can be d/l'ed here: http://www.jongware.com/binaries/preptext.zip -- there have been a few discussions on this forum on proper usage; esp. http://forums.adobe.com/message/2159410 mentions a few important gotchas)

  • What About My Port Into Verizon Pre Pay?

I activated a Moto X onto Verizon Prepay and then per CS agent I called in and asked for my old Page Plus number to be ported to this phone.  Verizon did give me a number when I activated it late last night.  They asked for my Page Plus account number, but not my pin number I have with Page Plus.  I am really worried about this port in happening.  I have many business contacts and want to keep my same number.  Now when I went and checked on the Verizon website port status they say they have not record of my port request.  What should I do?  Does anyone have any experience with porting into Verizon pre pay and specifically from Page Plus?  Thanks!

Yes, you can do all of that via Tools - Forms - More Form Options - Import Data, if you have Acrobat.
If you only have the free Reader then you can still do it, but it requires a script.

  • I'm trying to make a ring to for iPhone and about 20 sec into the playing of the song it fades out and goes silent. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

I'm trying to make a ring to for iPhone and about 20 sec into the playing of the song it fades out and goes silent. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Im not sure what garage band is, but i can tell you the way apple recommends making ringtones. Highlight a song in iTunes, right click and select get info. Goto the options tab and youll see the time lengths (write down the ending time) for the start time type in where you want the ringtone to start, ringtones can only be 30 sec long so make the ending time 30 sec later. Exit it out of the info and while song highlighted goto the "advanced" tab at the top of iTunes where you will see an option that says "create aac version". after creating the aac version you will have a duplicate song in your iTunes, change the original back to the correct time length. Take the 30 sec aac version and drag it to your desktop, right click the icon and click "preferences" You will then be able to change the name of the file which will be somethign to the effect of "songnamehere.m4a" you just change the m4a to m4r. you now have a ringtone, drag the new file to iTunes where it will pop up in a new tab labled ringtones. If you cannot change the name of the file when it is on your desktop let me know and i will give you instuctions how to be able to change it. Once you get it figured out you can use any song you have on iTunes to make a ringtone.

I recently bought an ablum from iTunes, but the songs are randomly stopping and skipping about 45 seconds into the song. What is the problem?

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past purchases, delete the current copies from your iTunes library, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history, or via Contact Support.

  • How do I get out of kernel panic?  kernel panic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8gig.

I get kernel paic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8 G of upgraded RAM. (20 inch iMac core 2 duo)

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • What is FireWire and what FireWire adapter do I need to use FireWire 800 for my portable external hard drive ?

Hi guys, I'm new to Mac. I have a MacBook Pro 13" (late 2011) with Lion OS and Parallels 7 (Windows 7). My understanding is that there is FireWire connection / extension built in to the MacBook Pro already. I also have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive 750GB USB2.0 and 3.0 (that can be used for PC and Mac). It states that the portable external harddrive is FireWire 800 compatible. The questions are (1) how does FireWire works ? (2) how do I use or activate FireWire 800 ? (3) is there any setup / setting changes I need to on my MacBook Pro ? (4) what FireWire adapter do I need to purchase to connect my portable external harddrive to my MacBook Pro ? Is it expensive ?
I read a few articles online but they are too technical for me. They mentioned something about FireWire adapter with 6 pins or 9 pins. Not sure what that means. I'm totally confused. So any help, advise or guidance will be much appreciated. In Layman's term would be better. Thanks.
How about Thunderbolt ? Is it compatible with the above external portable hard drive mentioned ? Do I need a Thunderbolt adapter for it ? How do I activate or use Thunderbolt ?

    Thanks, Clinton and Alberto.
The below link is the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive (product code STAA750302) that I have. It states that it features USB 2.0 or 3.0 plug–and–play connectivity and easily upgradeable to USB 3.0, FireWire 800 or eSATA. It only comes with a 18-inch USB 3.0 / 2.0 backward compatible cable.
    http://www.seagate.com/au/en/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/standard/ goflex/
Based on the above, my understanding is that I need to buy a FireWire 800 adapter to connect to the portable external hard drive so that I can use FireWire 800 with my MacBook Pro. Is this correct ? Do I need to get a separate cable as well or can I just use the 18-inch USB 3.0 / 2.0 backward compatible cable that was provided in the box ? If so, what sort of FireWire 800 cable do I need to get ? 9 pin to 9 pin ? 6 pin to 9 pin ? Or 4 pin to 9 pin ?

  • What about session memory when using BEA Weblogic connection pooling?

    Hi,
consider a web application, allowing database connections via a BEA Weblogic 8.1 application server. The app-server is pooling the oracle connections. The oracle database is running in dedicated server mode.
How are the database requests from the web app served by the connection pool from BEA?
    1) Does one oracle session serve more than one request simultanously?
    2) Does BEA serialize the requests, which means, that a session from the pool is always serving only one request at a time?
If (1) is true, than what about the session memory of Oracle sessions? I understand, that things like package global variables are beeing stored in this session private memory. If (1) is true, the PL/SQL programmer has the same situation, as with programming an Oracle databas in "shared server" mode, that is, he should not use package global variables etc.
    Thankful for any ideas...

    2) Or does BEA serialize the requests, which means, that a session from the pool is always serving only one request at a time?
Reading "Configuring and Using WebLogic JDBC" from weblogic8.1 documentation, I read:
"... Your application "borrows" a connection from the pool, uses it, then returns it to the pool by closing it...."
What do you mean by returning the connection by closing it? Tbe server will either return the connection to the pool or close it...When application code does typical jdbc code, it obtains
a connection via a WebLogic DataSource, which reserves an
unused pooled connection and passes it (transparently wrapped)
to the application. The application uses it, and then closes
it. WebLogic intercepts the close() call via the wrapper, and
puts the DBMS connection back into the WebLogic pool.
The reason, why I as an Oracle programmer ask this is, because every session (=connection)
in Oracle has its own dedicate, private memory for things like global PL/SQL variables.
Now I want to figure out, if you have to careful in programming your databases, when
one Oracle session (=connection) is serving many weblogic requests. It is serving many requests, but always serially. Do note however, that we
also transparently cache/pool prepared and callable statements with the
connection so repeat uses of the connection will be able to get already-made
statements when they call prepareStatement() and prepareCall(). These
long-lived statements will each require a DBMS-side cursor.

  • Phone call becomes garbled to other person after about a minute into call, but I can hear them clearly.  I stood by a tower with full signal and was still hung up on because I couldn't be heard after about a minute.  Please help.

This is a recent occurrence.  I either initiate or receive calls, and about a minute into them, the person cannot hear me because it becomes so garbled to them, but I can hear them clearly.  I was able to make one call that was completely clear, and that was tonight, but it was one only.  I've done a master reset, but I have not deleted all data, as I'm afraid to do so and lose pictures.  The only other option I supposedly have is to replace the phone.  Please help.  What could this be?

I'm getting a new adapter for my ipod touch 5th generation 16gb, and I don't know what wattage adapter to use with it and what not to use

Do you mean a wall charger?
The min is 500 mA (1/2 amp) (2.5 watts) at about 5 volts DC. Most are 1000 mA (5 watts) or higher and those are acceptable. I use a iPad charger that puts out 2.4 amps (12 watts)

  • What about translate of a pdf from spanish to engish???

Hi: Some one know about translate....what about translate of a pdf from spanish to engish???

I had thought about using PDF/X. I certainly wouldn't use PDF/X-1a if there is any RGB; PDF/X-3 may be OK, but you do need to know what the output intent is, or you can end up with unexpected colour shifts, especially if (not recommended) the file used device colour spaces. If an ICC blend space was used for transparency, that can safely be used as the output intent.
Flattening layers is a trivial operation; the layers aren't separate as in Photoshop. Rather, each thing in a PDF might have a marker putting it in a layer. Stripping out all these markers leaves you without layers, and with everything visible.
Flattening transparency is more problematic. However, it has to happen every time you print, one way or another, so it is well tried.
Flattening will change some of the elements in the file, turning some things into curves, some things into rasters - anything that looks the same. Here is where the quality comes in. These NEW bitmaps have to have a suitable resolution. Images are not the main quality problem - text is far more of an issue. It is not a thing to do with a PDF for interactive use, as the text can degrade on screen and become unsearchable. But the transparency flattener has quality settings (you have the same settings in the print dialog).
