What about buying an iPhone 3GS in Aug. 2012?

Am guessing similar threads exist, but I couldn't find one.  Apologies if this is way redundant.
I can pick up a "new" one on ebay for around $300, maybe a little less (not refurb -- usually they are phones people received from warranty replacements, but decided to not use).  At this stage with the iPhone 4GS around and the new one anticipated to debut before the end of 2012, is the 3GS a good choice for $300.  That is topping out (over) my budget, but do-able.  Am on Verizon and don't want to get into a contract with them, ever, so the 4G and 4GS w/o contract are out of my budget completely.  So it's down to a new 3GS or I'll pick one of the other operating system smartphones that would be a more "current" model withink their line than the 3GS is within the iPhone group.
I will mostly use it for email, and web browsing.  I write a lot of long emails and prefer a physical keyboard, but am willing to adapt to a virtual keyboard if the 3GS is right for me in all other ways.   Used a Blackberry Tour for couple of years at work.  I'd say the experience was "Eh".  It did way more "business" stuff than I ever was interested in or utilized, but it was okay for email and kind of slow on web.
So if you've had or used iPhone and other system smartphones, please share your thoughts or exprience.  There are Motorola Droids with physical keyboards for $200 and under on ebay, and lots of nice looking Samsung smartphones for same.
I'm super tired of emailing on my Samsung Alias 2, but it gets the basics done for now.
Thanks, Thanks, Thanks.

You're welcome.
Unless you purchase a new CDMA iPhone 4 or 4S at Verizon's subsidized or discounted price, you shouldn't need to have a two year contract with Verizon.
I can't help you with non-iPhones since all android phones are nothing but a poor iPhone copy.

  • Buying an iPhone 3GS without the AT&T contract.??

    Hi there... I live Ohio and I was thinking of buying an iPhone 3GS (16GB).
    My question is that if I buy the iPhone from an Apple Store without the AT&T contract (approx 600USD for the 16GB model) from the United States, will I be able to use my phone in other countries with their local network carrier's SIM cards? I have a traveling job (have to switch countries every 3-4 months or at least twice a year) so I usually buy a local SIM from the country that I live in since that is a cheaper option for me.
    I have wanted an iPhone since a very long time now but I hate what Apple has done (the contract with AT&T). What good is a phone for a person like me who travels so much in a year?!! I need a phone where I can switch SIM cards without any hassles.
    Hope someone has an answer to my question. I don't want to buy the iPhone unless I'm absolutely sure that it will work in other countries (mainly Australia, UAE & India)

    ALL U.S. iphones are carrier locked to AT&T in the U.S. They CANNOT be activated with any other carrier in any other country.
    You need to buy an unlocked phone from one of the few countries that offer this.

  • If i buy an iphone 3gs now can I........

    if i buy an iphone 3gs now, can I port a number from a helio phone who's contract expires on the 29th after having received a number for the iphone?

    I'm sure you can. I was in a similar situation when i bought my 1st gen iPhone and ported a number about 2 months after getting the phone. Was not a problem. But I guess it's always best to check with AT&T, but I would call rather than asking in a store. The store personnel seem more interested in selling than answering questions. Twice I've gone into a store thinking it would be easier than calling to do something and twice they put me on the phone with customer service from a phone in the store. DUMB DUMB DUMB

  • I am so confused. I am thinking about buying an iPhone 4S but I want to use those card things that you can put the code in for the phone is this possible? I'm not talking about the 50$ unlimited card just the regular 20$ cards that hold mins and texts...

    As far as I know there is no US cell carrier that allows pay as you go with an iPhone. You can purchase an unlocked iPhone 4S at an Apple Store and try it with a non-supported carrier.

  • Minimum age to buy an iPhone 3GS outright?

    Hello,
    I didn't know where to put this - so I just thought this was the most relevant.
    Is there a minimum age for buying an iPhone 3GS from the Apple Store?
    Thanks in advance

    Not that I'm aware of. Of course, activating it for service is another story. You'd have to be old enough to meet the carrier's requirements for service.

  • Is buying an iPhone 3GS worth it in 2012?

    I'm looking to buy an iPhone.  I want one unlocked as I often move abroad, but I don't want to pay the price for an iPhone 4 or 4S.  I don't care about the retina display.  I am also prone to dropping my phone and would most likely smash the back of a 4 or 4S within a week.  Should I buy a 3GS?

    I'd agree with xtrmecarbon, your best taking all the above into concideration.
    But then you've also got to ask yourself, on 02 for example: (Pay As You Go) iPhone 3GS your looking at £319 for the iPhone itself. From here you could go for a "Pay Monthly Sim" with 02.
    If you go for a "12 Month SIM" your find your "Pay Monthly Sim" will cost roughly half the price than "Paying Monthly", as your an O2 Customer for an entire year. so for example i was paying £27 a month, i'm now only paying £15 because i'm with O2 for a year. obviously theirs extra charges if you go over your contract usage, same as all phone contracts.
    This would cost you in total: £499 (Including iPhone 3GS, Black, 8GB) if you didn't go over your usage for £15 a month for example, now you could properly say for sure the iPhone 3GS will be around for another year at least, obviously were not 100% certain on that.
    Question you've got to ask yourself would you rather save an extra £300 roughly, I'd suggest buying the handset on it's own, and doing a sim only deals, will work out cheaper in the long run..
    Hope this advice helps!

    Apple will make good on it. I would certainly consider getting Apple Care so in the event it becomes unusable they may replace yours with what is available.

  • Few questions about buying an iPhone in the US for European use

    We're currently in NY and are considering buying an iPhone because it's way cheaper here than in Belgium.
    Still we have a few questions, hope we can get some answers
    - You should unlock your iPhone, should we ask for that right away in the Apple store ?
    - Doest unlocking cost any money, if yes, how much ?
    - What happens to your warranty, can you go to a Belgian Apple store if something happens to your iPhone ?
    - Can customs make any problems if you get one or more iPhones unboxed in your baggage ?
    Anyone who has done this and wants to share their experience, any other things we have to know ?
    Thanks in advance!

    Warranty will be valid only in the US. You will have to return the iPhone
    personally or via friend/relative. Apple will not accept international
    shipments for evaluation nor will Apple ship out of the country after
    repair/replacement. You cannot have your US purchased iPhone serviced
    or replaced in the US.
    LTE/4G on an iPhone purchased in the US will not work outside of North America.
    Tax, import duty, customs fees are best discussed with the appropriate governmental
    entities in Belgium.
    Be sure to ask in the Apple store for an unlocked iPhone - you will pay full retail price
    plus applicable taxes. There is no charge to get the iPhone unlocked.

  • Where can I buy an iPhone 3GS for cheap?

    Hello. Does anyone know where I can buy a used iPhone 3GS for cheap, and how much money do they go for?

    The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.

  • What functions work with iPhone 3GS on OS4 with Apple wireless keyboard?

    I've successfully paired my Apple Wireless Keyboard with my iPhone 3GS running OS4. I can type messages and emails, but many functions seem to be missing, like moving to the "send" button in email or moving around my iPhone screen. Does anyone know where to find info on what keys on the wireless keyboard perform what functions on the iPhone? Thanks

    Does it matter?
    On topic, there are a few things that work with the keyboard on to iPhone:
    * F1 and F2 - Brightness
    * F3 - Disabled
    * F4 - Disabled
    * F5 and F6 - Disabled
    * F7 - Previous Track
    * F8 - Pause/Play iPod
    * F9 - Skip Track
    * F10 - Mute
    * F11 - Volume Down
    * F12 - Volume Up
    * Eject - Disabled (unless Apple adds a mini-Disc)
    * Caps Lock - YEAY
    * FN Control Option/Alt Command - All Disabled DOH
    * Arrow Keys - YEAY
    Wow, troll. Stop bringing up dead threads...especially when you can't get your information correct.
    The eject key hides and displays the softkeyboard in text entry mode.

  • HT6154 What is the factory iPhone 3GS pin code?

    What is the factory sim pin code for a iPhone 3GS?

    There is none. If you have a SIM PIN, contact your carrier.

  • Question about buying an iphone now

    so if i buy an iphone now, but a new one (i.e. 32gb) is announced at macworld, can i take it back and exchange it without a restocking fee since it would still be within the 14 days?

    Since you have waited this long, it is probably a good idea to wait just a little while longer - less than 14 days for MacWorld until you purchase an iPhone - if you don't want to pay the restocking fee if Apple announces a new iPhone product such as a 32GB iPhone. This is an if but if paying the restocking fee would be a problem if Apple makes such an announcement at MacWorld, best if you wait just a little while longer.
