What About K9A2 Platinum Motherboard ?

Hi all
I am new here ..
I cant speak English very will .. anyway I have K9A2 Platinum Motherboard :
but it doesn't support Phenom II X6 :( What is the solution ?
This is list of motherboard support the new processor :
http://event.msi.com/mb/amd/6core/
Thank you

The bios works on the system i have ,but i cant test a X6 at least not for now ,no money for upgrades available.
I ve flashed it with MSI HQ version V and everything looks ok.
Observations:
After the bios update,at the first start with the new BIOS i was offered to press F1 to set -up.
Entered BIOS loaded Failsafe ,but in the settings there were 2 strange things that only an older user of the board is able to know if it s right considering version 1 of the mobo and BIOS updates.
-the Promise RAID controller turn OFF /ON BIOS option was not present
-the fourth PCI-E 2 speed connector option was not present
The bios looked at first boot as a bios intended for version 2 of the motherboard ,in version 2 of the mobo ,that i ve owned ,this 2 options were not present.
After loading defaults, saving settings and restart (the second after the update) the bios looked normal with all the options 1A had ,the upper 2 option beeing back in the menues.
Few months ago ,when i updated from 1.2 bios to 1.A BIOS i wasnt able to enter BIOS at first boot with 1A ,the board locking up needing a reset ,so after the update turn off the machine and make sure you do a MANUAL CMOS CLEAR. so you dont need to enter BIOS 2 times.Maybe the BIOS needs at first boot to initialize the Promise ROM who knows.
Conclusion :BIOS 1B doesnt seem to brake for me anything that worked with 1A.It simply adds an updated AGESA.Having in mind that at the BIOS update info the X6 is not showed off ,its just a simple AGESA update specified,we can say that the support for X6 is unofficial   so use your X6 but shhh

AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0 GHZ that I have over clocked to (17.5) 3.4Ghz
However anytime I go over that to say multiplyer set to 18 (3.5 ghz) it still runs but crashes when running high end games. I know I have to go in an adjust voltages. However, in the cell menu I can't access the CPU voltage areas I hit enter but nothing happens. It tells me Grey is defualt, White is stable and red is the obvious not recommended setting, but again I can't access it.  Is there something I need to disable before I mess with the voltages?
I know that doing any of this could fry the chip I have liquid cooling pretty much this idles at 28 deg Celcuis, that is with it over clocked so I know I have som room and know I should only up the vltage slightly. I just need to know how to do it.
I also wanted to adjust the FSB from the current 200 to 270 which I was told is possible with this board and also that is where it should run stable. Again I just need to know how to access these things in the Bios. If its a bios issue I can update to the next one,1.9, but did not see the need to do so. Anyways any help is greatly appreciated. I am familar with overclocking just not with this motherboard. Any user who uses MSI who could offer assitance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • K9a2 platinum motherboard, trouble with mouse/updating bios.

Hello all, I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum mb, using vista 64 bit. I wanted to flash my bios, Pretty sure I have 1.4, wanted to try 1.8, or 1.9. When I go to download center will ask me where I want to download from, I click on U.S nothing happens, even tried the other countries nothing. Up top tab will say blank page and go back to download center. Reason I wanted to try and flash my bios to update it is. I have a USB razer lachesis which I have to unplug and plug back in several several times a day, Im having trouble with it lagging or stuttering. I have tried every driver update new and old and nothing works. I have unchecked enhance pointer precision, I have tried every usb port on my computer. Nothing. I have tried updating my video card, on board sound drivers, mouse drivers nothing. Im at a lost. I have no clue  on what else to try. Do you think updating my bios will work? Thank you all for reading this. Hope it makes sense)

Get another mouse. I bought a Razer Copperhead a few years ago, and had similar troubles on several different boards. I just use cheap generic mice again now, they just work.
    QFT
I just use some leftover kensington notebook mouse (ci25m), even though its small it fits my fingers(not my palm, just my fingers ..because my hand/palm is huge lol) and it just works. The only time I bought a really spendy mouse (creative fatality) I only ever had problems with it.

  • Problems with memorys G.Skill DDR2-1000MHz vs MSI K9A2 Platinum Motherboard

    Hello,
    First, please, sorry my English.
I'm having problems with my memories. I bought a pack memory G.Skill model DDR2-1000 / PC2-8000 (2x2048Mb) F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ and installed on an MSI K9A2 Planinum with AMD Phenom 9750. The memories do not work on dual channel (only 64bit) and not working in 1000Mhz clock. (working at 800MHz). Installed according to the manual and the problem continues.
I sent an email to the G. Skill but they're not helped me much. http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=38
I wonder if there is incompatibility between the memories and the motherboard and if there is to correct the problem.
    Thanks. ???

This response in that thread on the G.Skill forum scares me...
    Quote
if the problem is only the dual channel one, it would be more possible caused by the motherboard
it is the north bridge that controls memory settings
I know we've had heated discussions about the 'northbridge' on AMD64 systems (and I don't want this thread going off-topic!) but this from HardwareSecrets.com just sums up where the G'Skill admin is wrong:
    Quote
Since the memory controller is embedded in the CPU, the memory capacity – including memory types supported and support for dual channel – is defined by the CPU and not by the north bridge (i.e. by the motherboard), as it happens with CPUs based on other architectures. A side effect of this architecture is that motherboards for AMD64 CPUs don’t have noticeable performance difference between them, as all of them use the very same memory controller (the one inside the CPU).

  • I tried MSI. K9A2 Platinum Support issues.

Do not buy MSI.... Buyer beware.
I have the MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard. Now the board runs fine. However I find it very hard to take this company seriously anymore.
6 months ago I tried Flashing the Bios for a CPU upgrade I wanted. MSI's website boasts its mother boards that have 64 bit capabilities. However if you use a 64bit OS. Namely Windows XP or Windows Vista. You are in big trouble. The Live updater doesn't work with it. Not at all. Install it and it gives you errors that it will not launch.
Now any one that has flashed a bios before will say. "Okay I will do it manually." (Or if you don't know what your doing don't touch the Bios) So you download the Image file you need. Launch your boot disk from the A: Drive and well you can't access the Image file you have placed on your C: drive because hey it doesn't recognize Sata. So pray you have an old IDE laying around or you will have to load it to a cd.  Oh but, hey again you have sata still doesn't see it. So usually you load it onto the disk. No big deal right? Well now on their readme it warns against Flashing from a floppy or CD (If you don't understand what I meant I am saying they warn against having the flash file on the boot disk Floppy or CD). So because of this I called MSI and had them walk me through the process because I wanted to be sure I am doing this right. I have done it many times before but for some reason it's a fricking process now. So we made a CD booted and ran it like you would off the A: drive everything went smoothly and then it froze. at 60% into the flash it froze so the guy tells me just reboot. I warn him that if I reboot the Motherboard is junk. He insists it should be fine. I reboot and as expected nothing happens because it was a bad flash.
So they say just send it back they give me an RMA number I remove the board package it and take pictures of its condition. I say again I took pictures. (The reason I did this is if you look at the reviews of this board on Tiger Direct there is complaints of them getting the board and claiming it is damaged. They email you a picture and claim it something you did. they then send it back to you.)
So I send it out. Wouldn't you guess they say it's Damaged they send me some nice pics in an email. So I send my pics of the board in the condition I sent it. There is no damage on the board they can see. They now claim it's the shippers fault. Shipper insists package arrived in great condition. MSI still refuses to help even though they know I sent them the board in great condition. So MSI is very poor in taking care of it's customers through RMA
So I send it back to Cyberpower. I explain to them what happened and they replaced the board free of charge and flashed it to current specs at the time. Bios Version 1.4. Now I work with computers. Part of my work is seeing the ease of how user friendly things are like Bios updates. How new processors perform. So now I was stuck in a dilemma 6 months after the first Now I need Bios version 1.6 installed. Well this time I took it to geek squad. They said it shouldn't take long and I waited in the store 3 hours and watched this person pull their hair out. All the normal ways of flashing the Bios don't work yet again. He goes to use the Live Updater and again 64 bit systems not supported. So he is baffled because why would a company that supports a 64 bit Processor not support the OS. Good question. Now I see more of the geek squad coming over all them ask it's not MSI is it. They get their answer and sigh. Now what they thought was a 15 minute procedure turns into me having to leave the system for a night.
The next day It is completed. What did they have to do? They installed a IDE drive booted from a floppy and loaded off the drive with the Flash file. Having to take the PC apart taking out Cd roms and running the ide via my CD rom IDE. Now I know a lot of you are going to say they didn't know what they where doing and I am telling you They did everything I did which is what MSI walked me through and hit the same road blocks. during the Reboot one of the guys wanted to try MSI live updater 3 and some how it worked..
So I called MSI today and asked them if they now support 64 bit OS with their instant updater. The answer was no. They stated they still do not support that. I checked my  Bios version and some how it did worked. Who knows maybe they did it when they had all the other stuff out and apart and I just didn't notice. But MSI is Claiming the contrary. So I am happy that I have the update. However knowing that I am going to need to update again I now have come to the conclusion that MSI is not a user friendly board in fact it took 4 people at geek squad some of whom I know and see do flashes all the time and they had trouble. I do flashes all the time and I have trouble.
The bottom line here is MSI needs to hop on board with what they offer. Everyone is going to the 64 bit OS mainly because of RAM. They want to run Crysis, Farcry 2, Mass effect, and have the fastest processors available. They want the best video cards Available. But if your manufacturer Builds 64 bit based motherboards that are suppose to support the AM2 Platform then you would think that they would at least have an updater capapable of working with those systems. Now it's not impossible to make something like this work, Nor is it hard. There are other manufacturers who do have easier ways to flash than MSI.
Playstation 3 does firmware update all the time over the net. What is a firmware update? to put it simply it is a Bios flash to update how the machine works with newer software or to take advantage of existing technoligy in the PS3. Which is put simply just a computer. If a company that makes these systems can't even get a live updater to work or does not have the ability to walk you over how to do the flash the flash over the phone correctly why waste your time and money with a lazy company. I have an Asus machine that flashes.
Take this however you want. It could be taken as venting or a warning. Hopefully the MSI forum admin will forward these concerns to MSI before he bans me.

I am not here to argue but, the fact that you as an administrator can sit here and say there is no money in 64 bit obviously are speaking from a point of view of Bias.
Walk into any Bestbuy, call any Dell call center,  Call CyberpowerPC.com, or call Microsoft. These are the systems that are in demand.
Best buy states that there 64 Bit OS based computers are flying off the shelves. and that 90 percent of the computers they now carry are 64 bit installed with Vista.  In approxomatly 11 months windows will only be making Vista and the New windows 7 in 64 bit. It doesn't matter what you think it does. It matters what the market is demanding. There is tons of money in this and if MSI doesn't get on board soon they are gonna lose to competitors that do.
Where would we be if we stuck with 8 bit? What would have happended to the gaming industry if Sega never came out with their 16 bit platform?
Mention MSI to any geek squad guy and they just laugh and say go Asus. Sure you may not value their opinion. But the public who take it to them cause they don't understand computers does. They even say They(Geek squad) are easier to maintain with processor updates with some one who has experience that means something too. Sure I know to use the Utilities now because of these forums which I am thankful for. However: I represent those who are not capable and computer literate and the idea here that we should let them fend for themselves is preposterous.
Plus the fact that you don't use 32 bit software does not speak for those of us that do. There is 64 bit software out there. If your going to sit here and represent MSI. First you need some suggestions and you don't have to take em.
First off answer questions with out the criticism to the 64 bit OS. Just try and help the people regardless of your opinion.
Secondly you need to lose this idea that there is no market for 64bit software. There is. Trust me I report to people who want to see what is in demand. 64 bit is in great demand (Mainly because of ram and yes people don't realize that there really never going to use it. However; The market is pushing this so when it does come out and they do start using it there won't be a mad rush to update everything again.)
Last... Maybe you should get on this company as well. This may be a user forum but, to be honest I am here criticizing them as on many other sites so they can hopefully get word that there are many people aside from me who are complaining about there support and they can improve it. MSI has some great innovations but they need to make sure they support all the new hardware and software that goes along with being in this type of business. Criticism helps drive us as Human, as companies to do better.
However I do value you and your opinion and will even be submitting a report of this forum and how helpful it is to those who are not so good with the computer or just starting out doing it on their own. You can lock this if ya like. Please don't take offense either as I think you have some knowledge that is really worth sharing to many others. I have seen some of your other posts after your replies and you definitely have some great input. Thanks for letting me debate with you.

  • MSI K9A2 Platinum No Video

I run a computer repair service out of my home here in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I get an average of 3-4 repair jobs a week. Also buying broken computers to repair and resell. Recently I got a job to repair an MSI PC. The customer had acquired the computer from her ex husband. Her complaint was that the computer was randomly loosing video. My first thought was that the graphics card was going bad. (Also MSI). Upon receiving the computer it was clear that it was not taken care of as it was full of dust and pet hair, and overheating was most likely issue. (shes a dog groomer lol). After a through cleaning plugged everything in and sure enough...no video, everything running as it should be, all fans, all lights on motherboard lit up. I pulled the video card out, put it in another computer, video came on, so i ruled out this as the problem. Tried running with just one RAM stick close to the CPU, nothing, pulled the battery, replaced, video was back, put it all back together and it was running fine. I advised her that the motherboard was on its last leg, in the meantime she had contacted her ex husband, he agreed as the system was over 7yrs old. He would be coming up to bring the rest of her things and would bring her a new motherboard. The new one being an MSI 970A-643. Also with an AMD FX Black Ed. CPU, and 4 sticks of 4gb Corsair XMS 3. But not a new power supply. So installed all of this, the power lead to the CPU was short by 4 pins, so decided to try it that way as it was all she had. On powering up, no video! Then thinking back remembered this issue. So I pulled a power supply from one of my gaming systems. This one had a matching lead. Now everything worked fine. So for payment aside from the original $50 I got for going over it and cleaning it out, I accepted the left over parts. The motherboard, ram, power supply, cpu, and cpu cooler.
I know this is turning into a long story :(
Here is why I decided to post here...I have this K9A2 Platinum motherboard. My thought is that it has a bad capacitor near the PCI slots as the graphics card did not work on any of them. But after searching for them have had no luck in finding them. Is there a way to order a set for this motherboard from the factory? This will be my first attempt at repairing a motherboard, and have been waiting for just this type of situation to try.
Looking at sets for other motherboards I see my investment as being around $20, to me a small price to pay for the satisfaction of knowing I can bring a bad board back to life, and a small price also for the experience gained. And if all else fails, I can pull the CPU and get another board.
Also before attempting this I am not lost on the fact that it could have been the power supply after all, but my POST card did give these error codes when I was in my first round with it...
    No.1 code 00
    Control to Int 19
    boot loader
    No.2 Code: 00
    (same)
    Signal error
    Check PCU & Power Box
    RST: Invalid
    IRDY: Invalid
    FRAM: Invalid
At time had yellow light under the graphics card, a green light above it and a white light above it if this helps.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am no expert by any means, I am an HVAC Tech, turned self made computer repair person, and I have never had a customer not get their computer back not working. I never over charge and always get them back within 2 days tops.
I have read that maybe the PCI slots are bad, can find nothing about changing them or the parts to do this.

To begin with this was moved to wrong section of forum, this belongs in either 'Retired' section or 'AMD' section not Intel C2D/Q.
As for caps see badcaps.com ( http://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=2 ) for replacement for online ordering of them, they have been supplying these items for quite a few years or get what you need from a local store if available, you will not get any MSI factory cap kits as they do not offer such repair items for sale.
My advice would be assemble components and test with a known good PSU and if it runs OK then you know it was the PSU that went belly up. It could be that due to age and bad PSU some caps may be bad but that could be seen easy enough just by close examination of them. badcaps has plenty of pictures for comparison of good vs bad caps.
What brand and model is the PSU in question?

  • K9A2 Platinum - ATI4890 - Ocasionaly no Signal on startup, no post bios HELP plz

Hi. I'm having some weird issues, it has only happened tree times in 2 months, no signal is displayed, monitor remains in standby mode. Then I hard reset it, and then every thing works fine. I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard with an AMD Phenom II 940 BE, all powered by a CoolerMaster Silent Pro 600w PSU. I haven't updated my motherboard bios yet, nor the vga bios.
Driver is Catalyst 9.5 for Vista x64, it shows my 4890 like "HD 4800 Series". The card is conected via DVI to a DELL s2409W 24'' lcd.
When it happens it does not show any video signal in my monitor, not even bios info, the monitor remains in STANDBY mode, i don't think drivers can cause that.
The card power supply is connected through two PCI-E 6+2 Pins conectors directly to the PSU.
I haven't updated my motherboard bios, this i could do, i know there are new updates for my motherboard. I have no floppy though, is there any way to update the bios via flash or making a booting CD?
Also, i have 2x OCZ 2gb memory stick running at 1066 in slots 3 and 4, this could be a issue??
Its a weid issue really, i can use the system normaly without problems right now, but this is still making me wonder whats was wrong those 3 times since i couldnt see any errors, cause there was no video.
I hope you can help out here, thank you.

Just came from work, and happened again, no signal, I couldnt hear the windows logon sound, so the bios is not posting.
I'd updated my signature with my system specs.
Also i cheked out my bios version with CPU-Z: V1.5
    Also heres my PSU specs
It should be working fine with the card, it has 40A on the +12v line.
I'm using the 3 and 4 memory slot from the board in dual channel, I'm gonna change it to the 1 and 2, to see what happens...
Lastly, would you guys recomend me to upgrade the bios?

  • The new 3.0 Ghz Phenom II X4 940 quad core processor and the K9a2 Platinum

Okay! So I have been looking at this processor for a bit, AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad Core Processor HDZ940XCGIBOX - 3.00GHz, 6MB Cache, 1800MHz (3600 MT/s) FSB, Deneb, Quad-Core, Retail, Socket AM2+, Unlocked Multiplier, Processor with Fan Link=http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4330959
I have the K9A2 Platinum Motherboard. I have updated the Bios to version 1.6. Now I called MSI and Tiger direct and none of them know if this processor will work with my board. Now I did post a previous thread and every one said I should have come here sooner for answers and that is what I am doing. I looked at Cyberpower PC where they are building this spec with the 3.0 ghz Processor and the K9A2. Now I would like to assume that it will work but with the manufacturer and tiger direct not giving the most accurate information I am worried.
I think it will work just fine but I am double checking before I spend the money.
So guys and gals will my motherboard support this new chip? Does any one have the processor running on the MSI K9A2 Platinum? Bios version 1.6?

  • Bios to unlock cores on k9a2 platinum

Is there any chance of a bios release to unlock the remaining two cores on my phenom x2 550 black edition cpu on a k9a2 platinum motherboard? If not, please explain why.Is it impossible to do,or do they just want us to upgrade to a newer board?Thank you very much.

    No you cant unlock it.
The boards that can are using a southbridge SB 710/750 chip based. It s a hardware limitation. This SB 710/750 have a feature called Advanced Clock Calibration which can substitute some CPU internal feature. The unlocking is not guaranteed to work even on such boards.
K9A2 Platinum uses SB 600 ,a rather old southbridge ,designed before ATI was bought by AMD.
You re CPU is fully supported (as it is) by K9A2 Platinum with BIOS version 1.9.

  • Question about Raid set up with (SB600) K9A2 Platinum V 1.0

I am having trouble setting up my raid.  I am using Windows XP Pro and go through the usual set up procedures using F6 command then installing the drivers etc.  Once I get everything up and running installed on Raid 0 the computer works very well for a few days.  Then later BSOD.  The first was a 0000007b stop error, then I got the system back up again only to have it a few days then another BSOD 00000024 stop error.  This time I was not able to bring it back.  I thought my problem was linked to a RAM issue as I was using OCZ PC2 6400 DDR2 OCZ2G8008GQ (2X2GB).  The reason I thought this was when I went to the motherboard site for approved ram, this ram was not there, then on OCZ site it was also not tested, then I went to newegg and used thier motherboard ram compatability screener and it did not show up either.  So I bought the Giel ram and am now trying to set it back up again though I could not get it back still.  So I finally just reformatted the drives (using another computer and a hard drive enclosure)and am getting ready to reinstall everything.  I want to make sure I am using the right SB600 drivers for my application.  I should be selecting AHCI X86 or x64.  This does pertain to the operating system (I am using Win XP 32 Bit) or the processor (I am using the Kuma Athlon X2 7750 2.7Ghz)
I believe I should be selecting the x86 drivers when installing windows.  Am I right?  I just want to make sure I do not screw anything up so as to bring on the horrible BSODs again.  I realize this could be some driver issue as well that could have caused this.  I did everything I could to make sure it was not the hard drives.
The last question I have is:  In order to ensure proper operation of the dual channel ram, (I have read the book, still confused a bit), I must install the ram with one stick in the first slot nearest the CPU and the other in the first slot of the opposite color?  In this case Green/Orange slots.

I was just trying to obtain the fastest load times/install times.  When the machine was first running it was very quick with no cpu temps running beyond 34C, no abnormal performance.  This is my wifes computer though.  Things began to go astray after she updated through windows update to SP3.  I am now using a slipstreamed CD with SP3 already on it.  She said she was clicking on the internet explorer "E" icon and it just shut off.  THen when it rebooted (it was still set that way in windows recovery) it started loading windows then BSOD 0000007b error.  I fixed it by finally getting into windows recovery and running fixboot, then fixmbr, then chkdsk /r /f.  It started working fine again.  Then later maybe two days later it happend again this time wihtout the restarting.  She was working on something else this time and it shutdown again.  This time when it tried ot reload windows I was getting the ntfs.sys issue with a 00000024 stop error.  I could not do the same magic with windows recovery any longer.  When I tried it indicated it repaired the boot, the mbr, but when I tried to run the chkdsk, it gave me disk read errors, such as "this disk has unrecoverable errors".  I used Western Digital test programs on the drives by removing them and installing them into an enclosure and taking them to a good computer.  One drive I could see in windows and it reflected 140G/B, the other would pick up but not in my computer.  It also showed the drive as having the entire quantity as the RAID together had of 298G/B versus the real size of the drive 150G/B.  I just figured that was the drive that was set up as LD 1 in the RAID setup (prior to windows) and possible was the drive with he boot sector on it???  I could get another drive and include it into the array, but then just figure I will have to worry about 3 drives versus 2.  She keeps improtant backup stuff on an external drive.  I will tone down the ram to 800.  Should I set the latency in Bios though to the 5-5-5-15?  or just leave everything at auto like I hade done before?  Though this ram is new and was not in the computer when this happened.  I had replaced the other OCZ Gold stuff and put in the G Skill stuff I have now.  I had previously stated Giel, but it is G Skill, sorry about that.  I may just do what you say, guess sleep on it and decide whether to just install the drives with OS/Programs on one and data on the other.

  • What is the best card I can use for my MSI K9A2 CF Motherboard

I have been trying to read some threads, but I cannot find out any info on what would be the best card for my MSI K9a2 CF ver 1 motherboard. I would like to up grade but I don't want to buy a new system.
I was thinking about the an Nvidia 460GT 768mb
    MSI K9A2 CF motherboard
    AMD Phenom X4 940
    Corsair XMS 6400 4gb
    Corsair 750 watt power supply

My question is my Corsair has only one 12v rail at 60 amps. The MSI says it requires two. I don't think my powersupply would be able to handle this card?
That refers to 2 PCIe 6 pin power connectors not +12V rails on the PSU.
     TX750W~PCI-Express Connector, 4 x 6+2-Pin

  • Question about the k9a2 platinum sata

on the k9a2, i notice 6 sata ports but i only see 4 on the bios post. i haven't tried the fastbuild utility yet but will it allow you to put 6 hdd's in raid 0?

    quad:
nah, gaming, benchies, hd video, movie, music. most of which will be backed up and even if i lost it most of which can be re-downloaded easily. also most of the media will also be on the upcoming htpc too. and once the cash comes in, i plan on taking the next step in storage and build a NAS PC. on top of that, the music is also on my laptop so there is a decent data redundancy going there.
wd raptors are very reliable drives, even more so if you use additional cooling for them. 4 of the 6 hdd's came out of that other machine i posted on here with the k9a platinum 580x system. they have been running for over a year.
again i appreciate the ultra smokin fast responses and i will continue to use msi products as long as they continue to make hardware to fulfull my needs.  (hint: a sb750 k9a2 platinum with the sata ports relocated and on the same controller would be nice   )
    Bas:
speed? i definately notice decreased load times on games with raid 0. i have never tried nor looked into sas so i cannnot say anything about it. usually i associate SCSI with expensive so that has kept me away from it.
i'll play, how much are these drives a piece?
i'll be honest, i am curious about the external raid controllers. however the expense cannot be justified at the moment. Perhaps later once they make a board with more than 4 pcie slots or i get another x2 card.  i have been really thinking about ssd's for my next upgrade, i hear they are fast but not practical yet.

  • K9A2 Platinum v2

This K9A2 Platinum v2 of mine has a lot of wierd issues.
-The board never been 100% stable during a week under XP SP2 or under SP 3 (like my KT3Ultra2).I always had to try different drivers for the video, mobo, sound and different timings for my ram modules.
-My Geil Ultra(golden plated) DDR 800Mhz with 4-4-4-12 at 2.1V  ,timings specified on the sticker ,never worked properly though Memtest and Prime 95 tests passed without problems. They werent stable with BIOS 1.2 not even at a lower frequency. The modules are reported by Everest with the name DDR 800 4-4-4(without the 12 like on the sticker).Acording to the web reviews this modules should of worked at 3-3-3-9 2.2V\2.3V without problems not to say about 4-4-4-12.
-To be able to boot under 60 seconds i had to put the hard drive to SATA I.
-My USB Logitech G5 laser mouse(last revision) had some kind of lag while entering games, more preciselly there was a delay of 20 seconds before the sensitivity tweaked in the mouse utility was available like it had to grow from 0 to the disired value during those 20 seconds or so.This lag was eliminated when the hard drive was lowered to SATA I transfer speed.
-The sound loop lock ups while gaming cooled down when i was using Forceware 175.16 but not totally. This happened with the onboard audio and with the X-fi too.
-2 days ago i updated the BIOS 1.2 to 1.5 with the hope of having a more stable system under XP SP 3(once i updated to SP 3 i got some blue screens so i considered that maybe is really needed an update). The update went smooth but after the update i wanted to install a "new" SONY floppy drive,i installed it using the cable supplied by MSI.At boot i observed that the Floppy unit led was ON ,light that normally is on when a floppydisk is inserted and used. The floppy drive was recognized by Windows but every time a floopy disk was inserted a message with no disk inserted appeared.I thought then that there is something wrong with Windows so i tested a workable bootable disk and the system refused it though using the F11 boot menu. Then installed the Floopy disk into the old computer thinking that the drive is defective.KT3Ultra 2 worked properly with the drive no problems what so ever and the light was working only when diskette inserted. The standby voltage doesnt apply here the led is of when computer is off.
-Then, with BIOS 1.5 observed that in the BIOS when trying to set tRAS manually to 12(with the 1.2 BIOS it worked) , Memset ,CPU Z and Everst were reporting always a value of X+2(if i set 14 in BIOS the value read by the info programs was 16).A similar behaviour for tRAS was not observed with BIOS 1.2 but it was observed with another timing more insignifiant that i dont remember that one at this moment.
-When clearing the CMOS i observed another undocumented thing(along with leds under the ram modules), near the Clear Cmos jumper(between the Cmos jumper and the Fintek chip) there are 2 terminals of another jumper, what is that for?The manual is silent.
-At this moment ,with BIOS 1.5(without the unnecesarelly floppy) with Windows XP SP3 and with timings 4-4-4-18 the board seems stable but my questions is if this board is defective ,or if this model is prone to engeenering flaws or I just hit into some BIOS incompatibilities with the components i bought?

Check the SPD with CPU-z, AMD's use the JEDEC timings.
EPP timings are only suiteable for Intel's with nVidia chipsets, you can not use them with AMD as the path is too short.
All your problems can be explained by this.
I'm very sorry, but I care less about the numbers on the stick, I only care about the number IN the stick.
Else post the SPD programmed timings, I bet that the timings written on the stick are EPP and NOT JEDEC.
This is NOT a motherboard problem as the memory controller is INSIDE the CPU and not like Intel in the chipset.
Many people make this mistake and try to set too tight timings, with unstable/slow results.
The ATI board is better and faster board then the nVidia, even that, it still uses the JEDEC timings as the CPU can't use EPP.
As for the floppy, complain to Microsoft please, they don't allow non-floppy install (if you don't slipstream), has nothing to do with MSI or any board at all.
