  • What should I do about an icon, "Rebuilt Library" that appeared when I "grabbed" the top of my iPhoto window?

The icon appeared when I "grabbed" the top of my iPhoto window to move it across the desktop. I don't want to delete important files, and wonder what I should do about the icon.
    I am using Time Machine.

    Thanks LarryHN,
I have iPhoto version 9.4.3, and the "Rebuilt Library" icon is on the desktop.
Interestingly, when I closed iPhoto in order to perform the option startup, I got the spinning beachball and had to force quit—when I reopened, using the option key, a window did ask which library to use—I chose the rebuilt library.
I moved the "Rebuilt Library" icon to the iPhoto Library folder.
    Thanks again!

  • What are the icons next to the printer name in the print sheet?

Ever since I upgraded to OS X Lion, I have noticed something different in the print dialogue.  First the technical info: I am using a 2009 Mac Mini (4 GB RAM, OS 10.7.3) and I have a couple of printers that I use - one is a Brother laser printer (shared from an iMac, running 10.6.8) and a Canon Pixma Pro 9000, connected via USB to a Time Capsule.
When I hit Command-P to bring up the print sheet, I now get icons on the left hand side of some of the printer names in the printer list.  One looks like a road sign - diamond shaped with a walking person in it, and the other is a circle with a wavy line (tilde?) in it.  The other printer names have no icons next to them.  I gather that the circle-and-tilde means "printer not available" (or something similar) - even though the printer is there!!! And then I wonder why the other printer names have no icons, and I have no clue what the "walking person" sign means.
I'm adding a couple of images so you all can see what I'm talking about:
What do these icons mean?  I can find NO reference to them - even in Apple's knowledge base article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670 - this just looks like the screen shots from the 10.6 Snow Leopard page.  I looked in the OS X Lion Missing Manual, but it has the same screen shots with no explanation of the icons.
This is pretty minor, but it's been bugging me for a while.   Any explanation or reference to these icons would be appreciated!

Wow, impressive, thank you!  Is there a listing or other resource available that can tell me what all these symbols mean?  Or are they the only ones?
This Mac 101: Printing article mentions some of the icons you will see in 10.6. And there is also the Mac 101: Printing article for Lion that shows some symbols. Neither show the icon you are seeing for the Brother but this is icon has been around for a while and used for warnings/information alerts.

  • How do I get out of kernel panic?  kernel panic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8gig.

I get kernel paic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8 G of upgraded RAM. (20 inch iMac core 2 duo)

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • What is this icon, and what does it do?

When you open an email and are in the read mode, at the bottom of the
Screen, right in the middle there is an icon that looks like a box with an arrow
Pointing into it. When I hit that, the piece of mail I am reading disappears.
I can't find the description even in the iOS manual. What is this icon and what
Is it doing to the mail that disappears? Occasionally I can find that email in the
All mail folder.. But not always.. So confusing!

I believe that is the "archive" button. You have a setting for that instead of delete. Do you see the trash can? If not, that is what it is. Here is a link to the iPhone manual and you can see about changing that, but I would have to say it is probably in settings, mail.

  • What does this icon mean and why does a black battery appear behind it?

All of a sudden, since last night, an intermittently flashing black battery appears behind one of the menu bar icons. Unfortunately, I don't know what the original icon means! From right to left, I have the volume icon, the wireless connection strength icon, a telephone icon, (what I think is) an Ethernet icon, then this funny icon -- three horizontal black dots, with a thin vertical line and kind of an X running through them. (Can you tell I'm not a computer person? Anyway, can anyone interpret these signs for me? Inquiring minds would very much like to know, especially if something drastic is about to happen. TIA!

If you used Setup Assistant, Mac OS X 10.3: Setup Assistant migration may transfer portable-only menu items to a desktop computer may explain what is happening and how to fix it.

  • Once in the Mail app and have opened and email, what do the icons mean?

I am able to open an email on my iPod touch but I do not know what the 5 icons at the bottom of the screen do. I know one is to reply, and one is to create a new message but that's it. Can anybody help me? Especially about the middle icon which looks like a box with an arrow on top.

    Hello GenevaMorley,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Perhaps you should take a look at the Chapter on Mail from your iPod's *User Guide*. It should be able to answer questions such as these.

  • What do the icons indicate next to the pages in the sidebar?

Specifically, what does the icon of the silhouette of a person mean? I created a website over a year ago and went back today to update for the first time in forever. When I duplicated a few pages somehow the icons, instead of being little blank, red squares, had a silhouette of a person's head/shoulders.
Then, when I tried to publish it to a folder on my hard drive, it said that it was successful, but my new pages aren't in the folder. I clicked "replace everything" but my new stuff won't show up.
    Any thoughts?

They indicate which style of page template it is. When you create a new page in iWeb, you have a choice of eight page templates within each theme.
Specifically, what does the icon of the silhouette of a person mean?
It means the page is an "About Me" template.

What about secondary disks - where do they go when they are restored by Time Machine?

I see the "Remove now" button next to that checkbox--exactly
what messages does that button remove? The current message?
All messages? Just the ones that don't have a blue dot next to them?
The Remove Now button removes ALL messages available at the incoming mail server for the account.
To remove an individual message from the server, select the button at the bottom of the mailboxes drawer which has a gear icon.
At the bottom of the menu window that appear, select Get Info.
Select the POP via the Account selection - the account will be already selected if you are accessing a single account with the Mail.app.
Under the Messages On Server tab at Show Messages, All messages on POP server should be selected.
The window below will reveal all messages currently available on the server. You can select an individual message or multiple messages and then the Remove From Server button.

  • HT3662 What about TOO MUCH SECURITY???

What about TOO MUCH SECURITY???  I always played the SET puzzle in the New York times, which required the Java plug in.  No problem, until I installed Mountain Lion, which I am beginning to REGRET.  After installing the new OS, the NYT game page required that I install the newest version of Java.  Now I'm completely frozen up when I try to play my puzzle.  Just the stupid Java icon, with the squares circling endlessly around the coffee cup.  It went on for an hour, and I finally gave up.  I have to restart everything before I can use the browser again.  Any suggestions??

Is playing that game worth the extreme security risk of having Java enabled in your web browser? Are you aware that Java is currently vulnerable, allowing a web site to install malware on your machine without any user interaction required? Further, that has been the case for 25 days (this time), with no fix available yet. And that's just the latest incident... Java has been involved in getting the majority of Mac malware installed over the last year.

    Java is vulnerable… Again?!

Spotlight lists items and shows preview images.  BUT what about showing the path/location address of an item in my computer.
Especially important if I've put the item in the wrong folder and what to locate it without multi-steps. iMac OS X 10.5 was more useful.
Old OSX Spotlight function automatically displayed path/location within the machine:  e.g. desktop/folder/sub-folder/item.
Can I make Spotlight show the path?

Press option-command and the path is displayed at the bottom of the little preview window.  Press command-return and the enclosing folder opens.

  • HT5071 Is it possible to call a locally installed ibook from a hyperlink? What about to a bookmark?

Is it possible to call a locally installed ibook from a hyperlink? What about to a bookmarked page?
    I have 2 questions..
    1. Can I send a link via email that when launched will open an ibook that has already been downloaded to the bookshelf?
    2. If question 1 is possible, can I take it a step further and call a bookmark, i.e. chapter 3.
Our company has it's own appstore and I want to send out links to sections of the ibooks using bookmarks or at the very least take them to the start of the ibook.
I don't need to give them a link to install the ibook as they already have it installed.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Chris.

That would be cool, but it's not possible. The ibook is not accessible by URL in the user's bookshelf.

My kids now each have an itouch, should we all have different apple ids even if I am paying for all itunes and app store purchases? what about icloud? I would like to share itunes and app purchases, but not necessarily photos...help please!

The recommended solution for most families is to share the same Apple ID for iTunes and App Store purchases, so you can share your purchases, but us different IDs for iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud.  With this arrangement, each person can automatically download purchases made on the shared ID (by turning this feature on in Settings>iTunes & App Stores), while keeping their FaceTime calls, text messages and iCloud data (including photo stream) separated.  There is no requirement that the ID you use for purchasing be the same as the ID you use for these other services.

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.
