What Airport do I need?

I've got internet through Sky with a wireless router but at present I'm using the ethernet cable. I have both an iMac G4 and an iBook G4 which I want to go wireless with. What do I need to purchase to go wireless for both machines?
Thanks, Em

Hello bluemoo7. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Depending on the exact models of your Macs, you would either need the AirPort Extreme or AirPort Card. Apple still provides the former, but has discontinued selling the AirPort Card. However, a quick Google-search on AirPort Card will reveal a number of third-party vendors that still do.
To help determine which card, check out the Apple Support Specifications website.

I have an i Mac with airport wireless. What steps do I need to take to change name of wireless(airport)???

You should use Airport Utility, in your Utilities folder (or you can search for it in Spotlight, the magnifying glass in the top right of your screen) to administer the Airport. There, you can change the wireless network settings, including the network name.

  • Hello, I have Iphone 5 with Itunes music, airport express, 2 stereo speakers. What else do I need to hear music on the speakers?

Hello, I have Iphone 5 with Itunes music, airport express, 2 stereo speakers. What else do I need to hear music on the speakers?

    Hello ricsch,
It sounds like you want to setup your Airport Express to Airplay music from your iPhone 5.  I found an article with steps to help you get this setup:
Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music
AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.
Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network.
    How to Set It Up
Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers.
From your computer, join the wireless network. Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar on a Mac. On a Windows-based computer, hold the pointer over the wireless connection icon until you see your AirPort network name (SSID), and choose it from the list if there are multiple networks available. Enter the network password, if necessary.
Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.
I also recommend reviewing the sections titled "Some things you should know about AirPort Express with AirPlay" and "Things to consider before you begin" in the full article:

  • What download do i need for v4.2 airport express on lion 10.7.1?

i have the cd but i have a mac mini with out a disk drive. which down load do i need? v4.2 AirPort on a Mac Mini with OSX Lion v10.7.1

You should already have the application on your Mac
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Give that a try
If this is a really older AirPort, you may need this application:
AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5
This may or may not run on Lion....I cannot verify.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • What questions do I need to ask the IT department?

My employer recently set up wireless access for our whole campus, and I'd like to be able to connect to it with my MacBook.
This isn't a hack job - I'm fully authorized to access the network. My problem is just that when I called the Help Desk to ask what settings I should use to configure Airport, I got the answer we always get in our group whenever we ask a question: "Sorry, we don't support Macs. If you want to use this feature, you need to request a Windows PC from the hardware support team."
I've got some people in IT that I can call who probably can help me "under the table" -- but I'll need to know EXACTLY what info I'll need and where they can find it on a Windows system. Can anyone tell me what I should ask for in Windows-ese, and how to translate their answers into what I need to configure the Airport card?
Note: I've tried scanning with KisMac and identified maybe a dozen wireless networks visible from our building, both managed and non-managed and with an assortment of open, WEP and WPA access -- so the range of possibilities is too large to get very far with trial and error.
    Thanks for any info...

Just ask them for the network name and if wireless encryption is enabled. If wireless encryption is enabled, ask them for the associated password.

  • What harware do I need?

OK, I own a small business with two (2) 933 Mhz Power PC G4s they are connected to the internet via a Netopia router and ethernet connection. I have on order a 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4. The new laptop come with an Airport Extreme Card. Both desktop Macs have slots for the original airport card, but alas, no card. I would like to network all three computers wirelessly, including sharing an internet connection. What hardware would I need to create such an animal?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Will

WillClifton, Welcome to the discussion area!
If your replace your Netopia router with a wireless router, you can connect your PowerBook via wireless and your 2 Power Mac G4s via Ethernet.
If you really want to make your Power Mac G4s wireless, you can use either a Mac compatible wireless PCI card or an Ethernet wireless adapter. The Ethernet wireless adapter requires no drivers therefore they will work with any Ethernet device regardless of OS.
    So you need:
    1 - wireless router
2 - PCI wireless cards OR
    2 - Ethernet wireless adapters.

  • What information do i need?

What information do i need to use an airport with a dsl Ethernet router?

That is kind of a broad question.
If you already have a router there really isn't any information you need. Just configure the AX so that the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED and then connect the AX to one of the Ethernet LAN ports on the router.
For a secure wireless network you will want to enable WPA wireless encryption when you configure the AX.

  • What exactly do I need to do to set up wireless?

Please forgive me if I'm in the wrong section. I am totally new to all of this. I have comcast as an internet provider. I want to be able to use wireless internet on my MacBook Pro. What all do I need? I want to know from real people b/c it seemed like in stores, people are just trying to sell me things. My house is close to 3000 square feet for what it is worth. I'm overwhelmed and not sure where to begin. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are the 2 PCs connecting via wireless or Ethernet?
Did Comcast provide a router or just a modem?
If Comcast provided a router and your PCs are connecting via Ethernet, you can still use either the AirPort Express (AX) or AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). The 2 PCs will connect via Ethernet to the router as they do now. Or the 2 PCs can connect wirelessly to the AX or AEBS. (Assuming that the 2 PCs have wireless ability).
If Comcast only provided a modem and the PCs are to connect wirelessly, you can still use either the AX or AEBS.
If Comcast only provided a modem and the PCs are to connect via Ethernet, the AX alone won't work for you. In that case you would either need the AEBS or another wireless router with multiple Ethernet ports.

  • Confused on what Airport Express does?

Hello all! I'm getting ready to order some misc. items from the Apple Store and even after reading the web pages on what the Airport Express is suppose to do I'm confused if I need one for my MBP or not. I have an Airport Extreme at home and it works great with my MBP all over the house (even decent outside on the deck) and when we were staying at a hotel this summer I was able to walk into their business office, fire up my MBP and instantly connect to the Net via their wi-fi. Apple's site mentions that to connect in hotel rooms the Airport Express may be used - but I'm curious as to why exactly (I mean if the hotel has wi-fi in the rooms is the Airport Express still needed)?
Thanks for clearing this up for me!

    Easum:
What you would have to do is plug in a wired ethernet cord into the bottom of Airport Express. Then you can configure your Airport Express to broadcast a wireless internet signal. You can make your SSID and such the same as at home, with the same security settings, so that you don't have to keep switching networks everywhere you go.
You can also set up "profiles" if you use it at home, so that at home it is used as an Access Point or Range Expander, and on the go it is your wireless router with an ethernet connection.
It's a really great tool to travel with if the hotels you stay at are all wired connections.

  • Does AirPort Extreme Card Need Config?

In reading some of the discussions relative to enabling WPA security, I have only seen reference to configuring the base station such as AiportExpress. Having done that are there any changes which need to be made to the AirPort Extreme card? For some reason I thought both needed to be configured to use WPA securely. I now get the distinct impression that only the base station needs to have anything done to it.
Could someone please clarify this for me?

    Hello bdahm,
Since the network is controlled by the base station the airport card only needs to know the correct the info to join the network.
Lets think of it like this. WEP and WPA are types of keys similar to a car. If you where to compare a standard Toyota key to a hight tech Mercedes Benz, you would realized that one is far superior than the other but it is not quite wide spread as the first. Like a car the network can take you places and as long as you have the correct key.
The base station is like the car and the airport card is like the key. The nice thing about the card is that it can transform into ether key as long as it provided with the correct code for the network.
So when setting up network the WPA key is setup and configured on the base station, and the card is told what style of key it should use.
I hope this clears some things up and does not confuse you more

  • What equipment do I need to stream music from itouch to bathroom speakers?

Ok, my wife wants to be able to play her ipod touch wirelessly to some speakers in the bathroom. I would like for the speaker(s) to be either wall or ceiling mounted. The only thing we already have, is the ipod touch and a wireless network. What else do I need? Do I need airplay, airport express, a receiver? What would be a good speaker system for a bathroom?
    Thanks!
    Andy

What are your constraints? Why not buy a klipshe ipod dock to set on the bathroom counter. That is my current setup. That, and I waterproofed the remote so I could skip tracks in the shower. If you're dead set on installing speakers into the room itself, simply find a way to amp the speakers and feed a 3.5 from it so any audio source with a 3.5 can be plugged in and ready to go. If you're looking for a more sophisticated solution, e.g streaming, Sonos makes great wireless/network solutions, I believe they also have recievers that are compatible with itunes libraries. But at that point you don't even need the itouch.
    Hope I helped.

  • HT1515 which version of Airport Utility is needed for my Airport Express A1084????

How can I find out which version of Airport Utility is needed for my Airport Express A1084????

I have this issue, too. The problem with the advice from Saito_Chickara is that Mavericks (I'm on 10.9.2) does not allow you to run AirPort Utility 5.x. So for those of us on Mavericks, what can we do? I have yet to find a solution. This is really frustrating.

  • My 2011 intel dual core duo iMac apparently has "Airport" ans apparently it is "on" although the icon (upper right) is gray. I'm not sure what "airport" is

My 2011 intel dual core duo iMac apparently has "Airport" ans apparently it is "on" although the icon (upper right) is gray. When I click on the <gray> airport icon it says it's "on" and the option is to turn it off.
I'm not sure what "airport" is, and I have no idea what a router is supposed to accomplish. I got a "smartphone" (not an iPhone, an android) and at a "Smartphone class" at the senior center I was told I need a router.

OK, so, in installing a router could I attach the router to my Verizon DSL modem and have the iMac get it's internet from the router by wi-fi?
This way I could place the router 1/2 way between the only two places in my home where wifi devices (wife's tablet, my iMac) are.
    Yes, exactly.
For the router I suggest you consider one of the three Apple AirPort Base Stations, not only because it will be easier to get help with using them on this website, but they are generally regarded as the most reliable wireless routers. Technical support directly from Apple is free for the first 90 days.
Slightly cheaper alternatives exist. I have tried other manufacturer's wireless routers, and I don't recommend them.

You need a CONVERTER, not ADAPTER The setup:
    The following list may help:

You also need sound, you can buy a converter with sound OR connect sound directly from laptop to TV.
