What am I doing wrong? Text looks BAD
What am I doing wrong here? Created a Motion opening sequence, and exported to movie with Animation as Compressor. Looks GREAT! Then import it into FCP6, and what ever I try, it looks REALLY BAD! I know it probably has to do with the compression I am using, but not sure what to choose! End result is for a DVD.
In iMovieHD(6), I can Export a video directly to iDVD and all looks great. Not sure if this is the problem I am experiencing in FCP? I can't just move it to iMovie, do to the number of cuts/length/video tracks involved, so any suggestions?
Thanks!
Bill,
As was noted in your other thread, video is not simple. If you want simple, stay with iMovie. If you want control, well with great power comes great responsibility. And great responsibility requires continuous study.
DV is one crappy format. It compresses images 5:1 and works in a 4:1:1 color depth. All this means when you go to composite something (.eg text), it will likely look like crud.
One strategy is to increase the color depth in the sequence to 4:2:2. DVCPro50 or ProRes422 DV will do this. These codecs will not improve the original image, but will give a bit more breathing room for color in compositing.
Good luck,
x

I am trying to use motion tracking to have text follow a section of the background.The text box follows the motion path, but the text just sits there. What am I doing wrong?
Motion basically looks at the the source footage and it's timing (in the timing section of the Inspector) when analyzing for tracking. Filters are basically ignored by the tracker. Retiming actions, like time re-mapping, or retiming behaviors that are applied before the tracker should be used by the tracker. Did you change the timing after doing the tracking? If so this would also require you to re-track the shot. Understanding that you found a workaround, describing the effects you applied would help to explain why you ran into problems.

My iPhone 5 won't ring . It only vibrates for calls, texts, etc. what am I doing wrong?
Hi, Mylenium,
Thanks for your prompt reply, I'm afraid it hasn't helped. I don't see anything wrong in my device manager.
I have also gone and updated every driver, especially the motherboard chipset and the Sata Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.
Unfortunately, this hasn't made any difference.
Any other suggestions?
Many thanks in advance!

I have a desktop computer- MAC. When I am looking for information or pulling up games for my grandkids, it will say I need to download the latest version of dobe Flash Player to view. I have downloaded this numerous times yet it still does not allow me to view. What am I doing wrong?
Could be the OS X version is too old for the later recommended Flash player version.
So this is where knowing what your computer really is, and the exact OS X version running in it. There is a hardware limit to upgrading the OS X in a PowerPC Mac with a ceiling of OS X 10.5.8 at the latest. This also limits the upgrade to a later version Adobe Flash player.
If the computer is not an older PPC-based Mac, and instead has an Intel core-duo or core2duo, an upgrade to OS X 10.6.8 is possible through purchase of the retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD and after installation, run Software Update to get the 10.6.8 Combo update v1.1 for Snow Leopard. This will not work on a PowerPC based Mac.
Should the computer be able to run a later OS X, a newer Player could be installed.
If the ceiling as suggested above be the case, and the workaround possible.
The question posed by Klaus is a minimal request for basic info.
Good luck

FLV quality looks better than F4V, what am I doing wrong?
Hi,
I exported a small clip as a on2vp6 flv, a h.264 f4v, and a h.264 mp4 file with the adobe media encoder cs4. Each file is the same clip, exported with pretty much the same settings. Resolution: 640x480, 0.5mbps target bit rate, 29.97 fps.
Everything I read says that for a given file and a given bitrate, h.264 should provide better video quality when compared to a h.263 flv file. I would like to know what I am doing wrong, because the h.264 files look worse than the flv file. I have provided download links for a short demo clip in each format.

fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr.mp4
http://www.filefactory.com/file/af5gc71/n/fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr_mp4
Why does the clip look better in h.263? It seems that everything I encode at low bitrates looks better in h.263 which leads me to believe I am doing something wrong.Okay, that is true, they are different codecs. But even adobe says:
Q: How does H.264 compare with the current video formats supported in Flash Player?
A: Flash Player supports the Sorenson Spark video codec (based on H.263) and On2 VP6. H.263 is the predecessor of H.264 and was designed for teleconferencing applications, at 64k rates. H.264 delivers even higher quality at lower bitrates. H.264 will deliver the same or better quality when to compared to the same encoding profile in On2. Factors you should consider when choosing a format include the complexity of the content, the desired reach, ability to archive, and licensing considerations.

Are there any tricks to getting the h.264 to look "better" than the h.263? Like, the h.264 version of the video doesn't even look close to as good, and I think that the f4v version looks worse than the mp4, which I don't really understand since they are both h.264 files. The footage is from a canon XL2 and the original source is ntsc 720x480. Is there anything special I should be doing for encoding in h.264 instead of h.263. The video is going to be only for the web. -
My computer is telling me it will take over 2000hours to download new OSX LIon v10.7.4 update.I had it downloading today for 10 hours and only 1% was done. What am I doing wrong?
You don't say what kind of connection you have, but if it's dial-up, you'll be old and gray before it finishes.

My company is developing a game for the iPhone and iPad devices using Flash cs5.5 and Air3.0
The client requires that certain features be supported - such things like GameCenter, Rating system, etc... none of which is currently supported by flash for the iOS.
However, they did provide us with a bunch of xCode sample files on how they want things to work.
My idea was to bridge the gap in functionality by creating a native exention that utilized the xcode source that was given to me, thus giving me the functionality that is required.
But first, I need to actually CREATE a native extension, even just a basic echo/hello world... I have followed all the steps from various guides and tutorials and I have managed to create an ipa and put it on my iPad2 to test, but when the program starts up, nothing happens, I am left with a black screen. When I comment out the lines of code that intialize the extension, it fires up just fine.
(and yes, I even tried to put things in try blocks in case there was an error - no luck)
So I am hoping that someone can read through the process of what I am doing below and point out what I am doing wrong, or what I am missing.
What I am using:
Mac Mini running OSX 10.7.2 - this is used to run xCode 4.1 build 4B110
PC - Windows 7 home 64bit - Running Flash CS5.5 (version 11.5.1.3469) with the AIR 3.0 SDK inside it. I also have the AIR 3.0 sdk in a seperate folder for command line running. (This is my primary developement platform)
The PC does have flash builder installed, but I have never really used it, nor do I know how to use it... everything that has been built to date has been done using Flash CS5.5
So, this is what I have done.
The first thing I do is create a .a static library on the mac.
I open xcode and create a new project.
Select iOS Framework and Library, then select "Cocoa touch Static Library"
Give it a name, in this case "EchoExtension" and put it in a folder.
I then delete the EchoExtension.h file as all the samples I have seen to date don't use it.
I then add "FlashRuntimeExtension.h" to the project from the AIR3.0 sdk frameworks folder on my PC
I then delete everything in my .m file and, following several different examples and tutorials, type up the following code:
// EchoExtension.m
// EchoExtension
#include "FlashRuntimeExtensions.h"
FREObject echo(FREContext ctx, void* funcData, uint32_t argc, FREObject argv[]) {
return argv[0];
//----------- Extention intializer and finalizer ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -
// A native context instance is created
void ContextInitializer(void* extData, const uint8_t* ctxType, FREContext ctx, uint32_t* numFunctionsToTest, const FRENamedFunction** functionsToSet) {
// setup the number of functions in this extention
// for easy reference, set the number of function that this extention will use.
int FunctionCount = 1;
// set the pointer reference to the number of function this extention will use.
*numFunctionsToTest = FunctionCount;
// create an array to store all the functions we will use.
FRENamedFunction* func = (FRENamedFunction*)malloc(sizeof(FRENamedFunction)*FunctionCount);
// create an array entry for each function
func[0].name = (const uint8_t*)"echo"; // the name of the function
func[0].functionData = NULL; // the data type
func[0].function = &echo; // reference to the actual function
// save the array in a pointer.
*functionsToSet = func;
// A native context instance is disposed
void ContextFinalizer(FREContext ctx) {
return;
// Initialization function of each extension
void ExtInitializer(void** extDataToSet, FREContextInitializer* ctxInitializerToSet, FREContextFinalizer* ctxFinalizerToSet) {
*extDataToSet = NULL;
*ctxInitializerToSet = &ContextInitializer;
*ctxFinalizerToSet = &ContextFinalizer;
// Called when extension is unloaded
void ExtFinalizer(void* extData) {
return;
I then go "Product", "Build" and it creates libEchoExtension.a
I copy this .a file over to my PC.
I am now finish with that god foresaken mac (*shudders*)
Back on my PC, I create a folder for my test project. For all intents an purposes, let's call this "D:\src\EchoExtension" I then create 2 folders, one called "lib" and one called "app". Lib is where I will create the actionscript source for my extension.
In my lib folder, I create a new fla in flash cs5.5 called "EchoExtension.fla"
I create in my lib folder, the following:
com\extensions\EchoExtension\EchoExtension.as
a folder called "Build" in which I place my libEchoExtension.a file.
in my EchoExtension.as file, I place the following code:
package com.extensions.EchoExtension
import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
import flash.events.IEventDispatcher;
import flash.external.ExtensionContext;
public class EchoExtension extends EventDispatcher
protected var _extensionContext:ExtensionContext;
* Constructor.
public function EchoExtension()
super();
// Initialize extension.
_extensionContext = ExtensionContext.createExtensionContext( "com.extensions.EchoExtension", "main" );
public function echo(Prompt:String):String
return _extensionContext.call( "echo" ) as String;
In my main fla, on the first layer of the time line, I simply put the following code to make sure that the as file get's included when I publish the swc.
import com.extensions.EchoExtension.EchoExtension;
var ext:EchoExtension = new EchoExtension();
stop();
I then open up my fla's publish settings, turn off the swf - which I don't need, and check the swc and make sure that it outputs into my build folder. "./Build/EchoExtension.swc"
I also set the player to Air 3.0 (which I can do since I have successfully integrated AIR 3.0 along side my AIR 2.6 and can build both without any problems)
I then publish the swc. So far, so good. No problems.
I then make a copy of the swc and rename it to EchoExtension.swc.zip, at which point I extract the library.swf file from it and also place it in my build folder.
I then create extension.xml in by build folder which contains the following code:
<extension xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/extension/2.5">

<versionNumber>1</versionNumber>
<platforms>
<platform name="iPhone-ARM">
<applicationDeployment>
<nativeLibrary>libEchoExtension.a</nativeLibrary>
<initializer>ExtInitializer</initializer>
<finalizer>ExtFinalizer</finalizer>
</applicationDeployment>
</platform>
</platforms>
</extension>
Now, at this point I am a little wary, because I am building for the iPad2... the platform is iPhone... I thought that may be a problem and at one point I tested the same build on the iPhone4 and had the same results. I have also tested it using the platform name of iPad-ARM and got the same results... So I don't think that is the problem, but I am unsure.
Now, to make things easier, I created a batch file called "buildane.bat" in my build folder. This is what I will use to create my .ane file and it contains the following command line:
D:\SDKs\AirSDK30\bin\adt -package -target ane EchoExtension.ane extension.xml -swc EchoExtension.swc -platform iPhone-ARM library.swf libEchoExtension.a
I then open a command prompt and run buildane.bat and poof. My ane is created. My build folder has the following files in it now:
buildane.bat
EchoExtension.ane
EchoExtension.swc
EchoExtension.swc.zip
extension.xml
libEchoExtension.a
library.swf
Now that I have my swc, ane, and all that, it's time to create my sample application that will be used to test my new extension.
I go back to my D:\src\EchoExtension folder and go into the app folder I created ealier.
I then create a new flash project called EchoExtensionTester.fla
I open the action script settings, library paths, and add the swc that I created in my D:\src\EchoExtension\lib\build folder to my project.
On my stage, I create an input text field called txtInput, a dynamic text field called txtEcho, and a couple of buttons called btnClear, btnRuntime, and btnEcho
I open up the first layer in the time line and place the following code:
// basic imports.
import flash.desktop.NativeApplication;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.text.TextField;
// import the extension from our swc.
import com.extensions.EchoExtension.EchoExtension;
// set our input text field to need the softkeyboard
txtInput.needsSoftKeyboard = true;
// add the event handlers to our buttons.
btnEcho.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnEcho_Click);
btnClear.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnClear_Click);
btnRunTime.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnRunTime_Click);
// create our extension variable.
var ext:EchoExtension;
try
// initialize our echo extension.
ext = new EchoExtension();
} catch (e:Error) {
txtEcho.text = "Error trying to create new EchoExtension:\n\n" + e;
stop();
// clear the echo text field
function btnClear_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text = "";
// just for testing, put the current version of air runtime into our text field so we can make sure we are running air 3.0
function btnRunTime_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text += "\nRuntime version = " + NativeApplication.nativeApplication.runtimeVersion;
// call the extension, passing it whatever is in the input text field and have it return it and place it in our echo text field
function btnEcho_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text += "\n";
try
txtEcho.text += ext.echo(txtInput.text);
} catch (e:Error) {
txtEcho.text += "\nError calling ext.echo: " + e;
I then save the project, Open the Air for iOS settings and set the following: (but yes, I know... I am going to have to use adt to do the build, but I need to create the swf first)
Output file: EchoExtensionTester.ipa
Appname: EchoExtensionTester
Version 1.0
Landscape
Fullscreen On
Auto orientation is off
rendering GPU
device: iPad and iPhone
Res: High
Deployement: I use my certificate and provisionging profile that I use for my Primary project (which work) and set for device testing.
I close the window and save again... but before I publish, I open newly created "EchoExtensionTester-app.xml" that is in my app folder.
I add <extensions> <extensionID>com.extensions.EchoExtension</extensionID> </extensions> to the xml file so now it looks like this:

<application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/3.0">
<extensions>
<extensionID>com.extensions.EchoExtension</extensionID>
</extensions>

</application>
I save the changes to the xml and go back to flash. I then publish.
The swf is created as it should be, but then I get the error message:
Error creating files.
An implmentation for native extension 'com.extensions.EchoExtension' required by the application was not found for the target platform.
Now, while this is a pain in the rear, I new this was going to happen because in my reading of tutorials and samples, they all said that you must use adt to build the ipa... but that's fine... all I wanted anyway was the swf, which I now have in my app folder.
I close down flash as I don't need it anymore and I create a new batch file: (note: I change the names of the cert, provision profile, and password for this post)
cls
"D:\SDKs\AirSDK30\bin\adt" -package -target ipa-ad-hoc -storetype pkcs12 -keystore "D:\src\mycert.p12" -storepass MYPASSWORD -provisioning-profile "D:\src\myprovfile.mobileprovision" "EchoExtensionTester.ipa" "EchoExtensionTester-app.xml" "EchoExtensionTester.swf" -extdir ../lib/Build
set /p dummy=
echo done
I then open a command window in my app folder and run build.bat...
I wait about 2 minutes....
YAY! My ipa file has been created with no errors reported so far.... Time to copy this bad boy to the iPad and see what happens.
I open iTunes, drag "EchoExtensionTester.ipa" over to the Apps, then sync my device....
YAY! iTunes has successfully installed the ipa on the device... and there is by bright and shiney blank icon for Echo Extension Tester...
I open the app.... and.....
nothing.
I wait
still nothing.
I go to the bathroom.
I get back... still nothing... just a black screen.
I press the iPad home button, the app minimized, I restore it... nothing... black screen.
hrm. Time to do a little trial and error to see if I can figure out where the break down is.
As a test, I open my fla and I comment out the following lines:
ext = new EchoExtension();
txtEcho.text += ext.echo(txtInput.text);
I then rebuild the swf... get the same error (don't care)... I then rebuild the ipa using the batch file.... and re-install it on the device when it's done.
The exact same thing....
I open the xml file... and remove the <extensionID>com.extensions.EchoExtension</extensionID> line, save and re-run the batch file again... wait for the ipa to finish, and run it on the device.
I fire up the program on the iPad and it launches perfectly... except for the commented line of code to actually create and call the extension, everything works as it should. The runtime on the device is reporting as 3.0.0.4080
As a test, I open the .fla back up and uncomment the 2 lines I commented out above... keeping the extensionID out of the xml file, I re-publish the ipa.... of course, this time, it actually creates the ipa from flash because the extension id is not in the xml.
I put the ipa file with the extension code in place on the ipad... Fire it up and put some text into the txtInput and press the echo button. I get the following error:Error calling ext.echo: TypeError: Error #1009
I suspect that is because I failed into include the extension in the descriptor... but when I build it with the extensionid in the xml, I just get a black screen. I am 99% sure that the extension context in the ext object is null (because that is what happens when I run it in flash debug without the extension lines in the xml)
And here I am stuck.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or what I have forgotten to do?
Thanks.I have been trying to get the remote debugging working with my flash and ipad2... but I can't seem to figure it out. I looked at several tutorials, but the ipad build just doesn't want to seem to connect to the flash remote debugger.
Anyway... here is a little more information.
I moved the initialization of the extension from the start of the application to the button event itself. Now, the application will start up exactly as it's supposed to, but when I press the button that creates and initalizes the extension and does the echo call, the application crashes.
Here is the new code:
// basic imports.
import flash.desktop.NativeApplication;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.text.TextField;
// import the extension from our swc.
import com.extensions.EchoExtension.EchoExtension;
// set our input text field to need the softkeyboard
txtInput.needsSoftKeyboard = true;
// add the event handlers to our buttons.
btnEcho.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnEcho_Click);
btnClear.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnClear_Click);
btnRunTime.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnRunTime_Click);
txtEcho.text += "Initialization complete.\n";
stop();
// clear the echo text field
function btnClear_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text = "";
// just for testing, put the current version of air runtime into our text field so we can make sure we are running air 3.0
function btnRunTime_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text += "Runtime version = " + NativeApplication.nativeApplication.runtimeVersion +"\n" ;
// call the extension, passing it whatever is in the input text field and have it return it and place it in our echo text field
function btnEcho_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
// create our extension variable.
try
var ext:EchoExtension = new EchoExtension();
txtEcho.text += ext.echo(txtInput.text) +"\n" ;
ext = null;
} catch (err:Error) {
txtEcho.text += "Error: " + err.message +"\n" ;
Now, program crashes are an entirely different animal because the ipad creates a crash log! YAY!
this is what the crash log contains:

I extracted the part of my VI that applies here. I have a 6602 DAQ board reading a counter for frequency, using a Cherry Corp proximity sensor. Getting a lot of noise and errant ridiculously high readings. Speed of shaft which it's measuring is currently 2400rpm with one pulse per revolution so 40hz.
Trying to use the express filter VI to clean up the signal and ignore anything over, say, 45hz and under 35hz. No matter what setting I choose I continually get the 20020 error, Analysis: The cut-off frequency, fc, must meet: 0 <= fc <= fs/2. I know this relates to sample period somehow, but for the life of me I can't understand what I'm doing wrong.
I used this VI without filtering on bench tests with a hand-drill and got perfect output every time. Now it's on the machine and being erratic. Any help here will ease my stress level significantly, thanks.
VI attached
Still confused after 8 years.

RPM.vi 92 KBHello Ralph,
I'm not sure about mounting your sensor to your rig, but I can provide a couple ideas about the filtering. Depending on the type of noise, the digital filters on the PCI-6602 could help eliminate the behavior you are seeing. If the noise manifests as a "glitches" or a bouncing signal, you could use another counter with a minimum period to help eliminate the noise. This concept is discussed in greater detail in this KnowledgeBase. I noticed that you are using NI-DAQmx; the practical application of the digital filters on the PCI-6602 in NI-DAQmx is discussed in this KnowledgeBase. A more detailed description of the behavior of these filters is provided in the NI-DAQmx Help (Start>>All Programs>>National Instruments>>NI-DAQ) in the book entitled "Digital Filtering Considerations for TIO-Based Devices".
I also wanted to comment on your original post and explain why you were receiving error -20020. For convenience, I have copied the text of the error code below.
Error -20020 occurred at an unidentified location
Possible reason(s):
Analysis: The cut-off frequency, fc, must meet: 0 <= fc <= fs/2.
I think you may have misunderstood exactly what the Filter express VI does. The Filter express VI takes a series of values in a waveform and performs filtering on those signals. So, it will look at a waveform made up of X and Y values and apply the defined filter to this waveform. Specifically in your application, the cut-off frequency (fc) is the Upper Cut-Off level that you specified in the Filter express VI; any frequency components of the waveform outside of the range you have defined will be filtered. The fs is the sample rate based on the data that you wire to the Signal input of the Filter express VI. In your VI, this data is coming from the DAQ Assistant. So, fs will be the sample rate of the DAQ Assistant and is associated with the rate at which points are acquired. The sample rate does NOT relate to the bandwidth of the signal, except that the Nyquist theorem tells us that the sample rate must be at least twice the signal bandwidth in order to determine periodicity of the signal. So, in this case, the sample rate of the DAQ Assistant would need to be at least double the high cut-off frequency.
However, you are performing a frequency measurement using a counter. I think this is where the confusion comes in. For the frequency measurement using a counter, the DAQ Assistant returns a decimal value which represents the rate of the pulse train being measured by the counter. It does not return the actual waveform that is being read by the counter. It is this waveform that would be band-pass filtered to eliminate frequency content outside of the filter's bandwidth. Instead of the Filter express VI, I would recommend that you simply discard values that are outside the range you specify. I have modified the code you posted earlier to perform this operation. The image below shows the changes that I made; rather than using the Filter express VI, I simply compare the frequency to the "Low Threshold" and "High Threshold". I use a Case structure to display the value on if it is within the limits. Otherwise, I display a "NaN" value. I have also attached the modified VI to this post.

Why does my 24fps look bad on my TV?
I just got the Panasonic AG-HMC150. I have shot some footage at both 1080p24 and 720p24. I transcode the files to Pro Res in FCP and they look pretty good, I realize the panning isn't as smooth as 60i. I drag one of the files into the FCP timeline and let it automatically "optimize my settings" for the sequence. I have verified that it is 23.98fps and field dominance is none. I have tried selecting "share" and going straight to AVCHD from FCP, and also taking the original MTS file, and Apple Pro Res and dropping into Toast and trying that way. The footage just looks choppy, jiddery and unsmooth. I have seen enough movies in my life to know that when they pan, or have cars drive by, that movies 24fps looks a million times better. My Sony HDTV even accepts and displays 24fps, and when I press info on the TV remote when watching one of these AVCHD discs it in fact says 1080 (or 720) 24p. It just looks bad. Even taking the HDMI output from the camera and hooking up to the TV and playing from the camera looks lousy.
What am I doing wrong? I know a ton of post work goes into Hollywood movies, but why does their 24fps look nice and smooth and mine looks horrible? Do I need to render with pulldown in FCP or something. I can't figure it out. Any advice, suggestions?I transcode through FCP to apple pro res, the files shows up as 1920x1080 24fps. Field dominance is none. I edit the video and then export as quicktime movie using current settings. The Pro Res file says 23.98 when played in quicktime so I know that's good. I simply then drop the file into Toast (10.0.4) and burn blu-ray disc, selecting DVD as the media. I noticed too I need to change the field dominance under the encoding tab in Toast to progressive, as automatic doesn't work. It only burns the top half of the image. Regardless, when I make these discs and play them on PS3, my TV's info says 1080/24p. Maybe my eyes aren't use to seeing 24fps. Does it sound like I am doing anything wrong in my workflow/encoding process.
Again, good tip on the shutter speed Jerry. -
Help please what im i doing wrong here (encryption)
Hi All,
I wonder if anyone here can help me. I have an algorithm to decrypt a password from a string and i am struggling to decrypt it. The algorithm itself shows an example and i tried the example but i cant get the results that were shown in the example to match with the result in my sample code.
Here is the algorithm.
1.First get the bytes of the original password, assuming a "Latin-1" encoding. For the password "Baltimore1," these bytes are: 66 97 108 116 105 109 111 114 101 49 44 (i.e. the value of "B" is 66, "a" is 97, etc).
2.Then get the MD5 hash of these bytes. MD5 is a standard, public algorithm. Once again, for the password "Baltimore1," these bytes work out as: 223 238 161 24 62 121 39 143 115 167 51 163 245 231 226 94
3.Finally, create the new password by forming a string whose Latin-1 encoding is the bytes from the previous step. For the "Baltimore1," password, if this is string is written to the screen, it looks like: _>y'?s3^(i.e. the 62 above is a ">", the 121 is a "y", etc).
To try the above, i tried to get the string shown in step 3 using the "Baltimore1," password. Here is the code that i wrote.
public static void main() throws NoSuchAlgorithmException, UnsupportedEncodingException {
String enteredPassword = new String("Baltimore1,");
String enteredPasswordBytes = new String();
String enteredPasswordBytesMD5Hash = new String();
String enteredPasswordBytesMD5HashBytes = new String();
//Step 1 - get the bytes of Baltimore1,
for ( int i = 0; i < enteredPassword.length(); ++i ) {
char c = enteredPassword.charAt( i );
int j = (int) c;
enteredPasswordBytes = enteredPasswordBytes.concat(Integer.toString(j));
System.out.println("1. Baltimore1, in plain text = " + enteredPassword);
System.out.println("2. Baltimore1, in bytes = " + enteredPasswordBytes);
//Step 2 - Get the MD5 Hash of the bytes
enteredPasswordBytesMD5Hash = MD5(enteredPasswordBytes);
System.out.println("3. MD5 Hash of Baltimore1,'s bytes = " + enteredPasswordBytesMD5Hash);
//Step 3 - Get the bytes of the MD5 Hash
for ( int i = 0; i < enteredPasswordBytesMD5Hash.length(); ++i ) {
char c = enteredPasswordBytesMD5Hash.charAt( i );
int j = (int) c;
enteredPasswordBytesMD5HashBytes = enteredPasswordBytesMD5HashBytes.concat(Integer.toString(j));
System.out.println("4. bytes of the MD5 Hash of Baltimore1,'s bytes = " + enteredPasswordBytesMD5Hash);
public static String MD5(String text)
throws NoSuchAlgorithmException, UnsupportedEncodingException {
MessageDigest md;
md = MessageDigest.getInstance("MD5");
byte[] md5hash = new byte[32];
md.update(text.getBytes("iso-8859-1"), 0, text.length());
md5hash = md.digest();
//return convertToHex(md5hash);
return md5hash.toString();
} And here is the output of the above program.
1. Baltimore1, in plain text = Baltimore1,
2. Baltimore1, in bytes = 66971081161051091111141014944
3. MD5 Hash of Baltimore1,'s bytes = [B@923e30
4. bytes of the MD5 Hash of Baltimore1,'s bytes = 9166645750511015148As you can see, the output of line 1 is correct. The bytes are exactly as described in the example. I was expecting the output on line 4 to be 223 238 161 24 62 121 39 143 115 167 51 163 245 231 226 94 as shown in the example. Does anyone know what i am doing wrong?

Edited by: ziggy on Jul 4, 2008 1:14 PMThanks guys for your help. I followed some of your advice and changed the code as shown below as an example.
It looks like im almost there but not quite yet.
import java.security.*;
public class Pkcs12{
public static void main(String[] args){
//String to be converted
String originalString = "Baltimore1,";
byte[] originalStringInBytes = new byte[8];
byte[] md5 = null;
originalStringInBytes = originalString.getBytes();
System.out.println("1. OriginalString= " + originalString);
System.out.println("2. OriginalStringInBytes= " + originalStringInBytes);
for (int i=0; i<=originalStringInBytes.length-1; i++){
System.out.print("["+(int )(originalStringInBytes[i] )+"] ");
try{
md5 = MD5(originalStringInBytes);
}catch(NoSuchAlgorithmException e){
System.out.println();
for (int i=0; i<md5.length-1; i++){
System.out.print("["+((int)md5)+"] ");
//223 238 161 24 62 121 39 143 115 167 51 163 245 231 226 94
public static byte[] MD5(byte[] bytes) throws NoSuchAlgorithmException{
MessageDigest md;
md = MessageDigest.getInstance("MD5");
byte[] md5hash = new byte[32];
md.update(bytes);
md5hash = md.digest();
return md5hash;
And here is the output from the above program
1. OriginalString= Baltimore1,
2. OriginalStringInBytes= [B@3e25a5
[66] [97] [108] [116] [105] [109] [111] [114] [101] [49] [44]
[-33] [-18] [-95] [24] [62] [121] [39] [-113] [115] [-89] [51] [-93] [-11] [-25]
[-30]
The bytes shown in line 3 are corect.
The bytes shown in line 4 are partially correct in that the positive numbers are correct. Im not sure why the others have come out as negative numbers. Whats interesting is that when i add 256 to the negative numbers the answer becomes correct. Why does this happen? Have i used a variable that is the wrong size?

What am i doing wrong, SWF File
Hello all,
This is driving me crazy!
I have made a flex app, that imports a swf file, converts it to a movie clip, and then pulls which frame to display from a XML file, that is checked every second. This works fine when using the following SWF file - http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swf/flash.swf
Although when i tried re-creating my own example - http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swf/flash2.swf
my flex app fails to respond correctly. THe swf file just loops thru all the frames in one go, and fails to take into account the XML file pointing at what frame to look at, and fails to look at the HTTPS service.
Ok so here is an example of the app with both examples embeded.
http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swfwork/Main.html - This is using the working swf file,
http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swfbroke/Main.html - This is using the swf file that i have created.
THe code that i am using to achieve this is as follows -

<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" applicationComplete="load()">
<mx:Script>

import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent;
[Bindable] public var dataDump:String = "datadump";
[Bindable] private var myText:String
private var flashMovie:MovieClip;
private function initMovie():void{
flashMovie = loader.content as MovieClip;
private function load():void{
flashMovie.gotoAndStop(myText)
getImage.send();
setTimeout(load,1000);
private function handleImage(event:ResultEvent):void
myText = event.result.framelocation;

</mx:Script>
<mx:SWFLoader id="loader" source="flash2.swf" complete="initMovie()" x="-9" y="-3"/>
<mx:Button label="Next" click="flashMovie.nextFrame()" x="78" y="405"/>
<mx:Button label="Previous" click="flashMovie.prevFrame()" x="0" y="405"/>
<mx:Button label="4" click="flashMovie.gotoAndPlay(7)" x="156" y="405"/>
<mx:HTTPService id="getImage" result="handleImage(event)" url="http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/change.xml" method="POST">
<mx:request xmlns="">
<dataDumping>
{dataDump}
</dataDumping>
</mx:request>
</mx:HTTPService>
<mx:Text x="817" y="10" text="Total: {myText}" width="157"/>
</mx:Application>
My question is when creating my own swf file, what am i doing wrong? Flex clearly isnt interacting with it in the same way as the original swf, by the way, this swf was taken from a tutorial.
If anyone could point me in a direction or offer help on this i would be thankful. Im sure i am just missing something out when i create my swf in flash1. your swf file must be published for as3.
2. it should consist of a main timeline with more than 1 frame.
3. it needs as many frames as you're going to reference in the xml.
4. that main timeline should contain objects on its frames so you can see when the main timeline is on one frame vs another referenced in your xml.
that's it. those are the only requirements of the swf.
have you confirmed that intiMovie() is called first and then load()? if so, how did you confirm? -
I purchased an mp3 from a private website on my laptop. The itunes library i sync ipod to is on my desktop, so i copied the mp3 onto a flash drive and then into my desktop in the Downloads folder and Desktop folder as well as the itunes music folder, 3 places. I opened itunes on the desktop and read the instructions for importing music that's already in my computer. Neither the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method works. I've tried both ways over and over. Cannot figure out what the problem is. I do note that the name of the mp3 file doesn't show the .mp3 extension, it appears as simply it's title, Eating Healthy, without any extension at all. Could the filename be the problem, or do you have any other idea what I'm doing wrong? My OS is Windows 7, using IE9. Thanks.
ADDENDUM AFTER READING ANOTHER DISCUSSION HERE: I have now tried right clicking the song in Windows Explorer and choosing Open With, clicking itunes. The mp3 plays in itunes but does not add to the library.I don't have a Recently Added playlist. However, I discovered that the file I had named Eating Healthy was given the name You Can Enjoy Eating Healthy when it copied to iTunes. I'm guessing iTunes pulled the full name of the piece from the internet. Upshot--the mp3 did transfer to iTunes on all 3 tries, but I was looking in my alphabetized list under E, not Y, so I didn't see it there. Thanks for your help.

new one wont receive my playlists from my library. what am i doing wrong? It looks like they are synched and i have the latest version of itunes on both but the only way to access my music is through the store
See:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
If all your synced media like apps and music is in your iTunes library then simply:
- Backup to iTunes.
- Restore the iPod from that backup.

Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong
I'm using Studio 8 in Mac OS X (10.4.6). I've got some pdfs
uploaded to my site that are accessible through links one one of
the pages. I had to make changes to the pdfs and resave them. I
thought I uploaded them, but when I test the links it downloads the
old version and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Here's
what I did.
This may be a dumb way to do things, but I saved the new
version and then dragged into the server file in
user-->Library-->Application
Support-->Macromedia-->Dreamweaver
8-->Configuration-->ServerConnections-->unnamed
server-->public_html (this is where all the other files are).
When I go back into Dreamweaver and open the pdf listed in the
Files window on the right (by control-clicking and selecting Open
with-->Acrobat) the correct version appears. I thought maybe
there was a delay or something, but I've waited and still the old
version is what you get from the site.
Is there an easier way to do this, or is something wrong
maybe? Many thanks in advance.> This may be a dumb way to do things, but I saved the new

Put the files in this Site's Local Site Folder.
If unsure of where you've specified this to be, look in this
site definition
(dw menu-->Sites-->Manage or Edit Sites)
If that path you've given above above is correct, it's
wrong....
