I was going to try iMovie for the firstg time but I'm new at all this.o a conversion firast
Do I need an App to do a conversion first?

Hi-8 camcorders record their signal at about 400 lines of resolution, slightly less than Mini DV. So reording anything more than Full Quailty DV is overkill. I would think there would be a way to convert it to some type of uncompressed format using an expensive Analog to Digital machine but am unsure of that.

A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.

What is the best commercial, clean up tool for an internal hard drive. Mine is rapidly being filled and I'm at a loss as to how to clean it up. I don't know what apps, downloads etc are current or pertinent. I suspect that I have a lot of redundency, but I'm not confident in knowing what they are. My hard drive is approx. 93% filled and I'm rather concerned.

I downloaded the free trial of EasyDuplicatFinder and tried it. Works great and is pretty easy to get the hang of it. Found lots of iTunes duplicate songs that I dumped and freed up quite a bit of hard drive space. Check it out.

This is probably a common problem with families wanting to share apps and music without realizing the issues created by this approach. As it stands today... the first (primary) iPhone associated with the iTune acct has been updated with the latest software version 5.1.1 and sync'd up with all the apps, music, etc from the one iTune acct, while the other two iPhones are still running on the original software version 4.0.2 and are experiencing problems now. I was advised by AT&T back in January that it would be necessary to setup separate iTunes accts for the second and third iPhones in order to receive system updates. The problem would be how to keep all the apps, etc from being deleted off the second and third phones that were originally loaded from the one iTunes acct. Since this AT&T advice was prior to iCloud coming out, would iCloud be a better solution or at least part of the solution? I really don't yet understand how iCloud works. For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior. Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Try this - no harm in doing this, and you may see some instant improvement.
Open Terminal - type this in (without quotes) "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly" - put in your computer password when it asks. When it finishes running (about 5 mins or so) you'll be back at a blinking cursor.
Activity Monitor was suggested and is good advice. See if anything is consuming either huge amount of CPU cycles or RAM.

Haven't done it myself, but seems like the correct workflow would be:
From GarageBand (iOS), My Songs -> select song -> Send to iTunes
From iMovie HD (iOS), My Project -> Insert Media -> select by song name
I'm not sure if GB creates its own playlist for tagging exported songs in your iTunes library so selecting by name would be the next-best method.
