What app opens a .SMB file

I created a backup of a my Dad's desktop Mac (the old one with the handle). I don't know the OS version. It was about two years ago. I have the backup file on a hard disk. the file extension says .SMB I need to know restore files from that backup but I don't know what software I used to make the backup file.
I think I might have used an program called Backup from Apple?
Any suggestions as to how I can open the .SMB file?
Thanks,

Here's the info on .smb. http://www.filesuffix.com/extension/smb.html

  • How to change what app opens a certain file type downloaded in GoogleChrome

How do you change what program is the default to open a certain type of file? My specific issue is torrent files downloaded in Chrome automatically open in Limewire but I want it to open in Vuze. Is this a Chrome setting or an OSX setting that I need to change? In finder the torrents show as Limewire files and when I click "open with" I can select Vuze, tell it to always use Vuze but it only applies to each individual file and not new ones that I download.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I found the answer myself - go to get info on a file and change the program and select apply to all. This seems to have worked for all new files

Select a file in question. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Open With section select the desired default application from the drop down menu. Then click on the Change All button.

  • How can you tell what app is using a file?

I have a screenshot that I moved to the trash. I try to empty the trash, but it says the file is in use. Is there any way to tell what app is using it?
    Thanks very much.

There is a shell command (i.e. Unix executable) called fuser.
This program displays a list containing all the process-ids (PIDs) that are accessing a particular file at a given time.
To invoke it you just need to open a terminal window, wait for the command prompt (typically a "$"), then type fuser followed by a space and then drag the file from the finder to said terminal window.
Once the PID list is displayed, you need to look-up the process id (the first column) with the help of activitty monitor to see the name of the app that's accessing the file.
One final warning: make sure activity monitor is displaying "all processes" because the file is not necessarily being accessed by one of your processes.

  • I there a way to see what apps open in which desktop?

Since installing Lion, the loss of "Spaces" took a little while to get used to, but I'm over that now.
It would be nice to see a list of desktops and what apps appear / open in those desktops.
Is this possible to see in Lion?
    -TIA

Not like it was in the old Spaces preferences, no.  The best you can do is go through the apps in the Dock and check whether they are assigned to a specific Desktop in the Options menu.  The Menu Bar has no reminder of what Desktop you are in, either.

  • What application opens a .wmv file?

I've gotten several .wmv files in my email and being new to Macs I don't know what application opens these files. I can download them successfully however I always get an error message that says Saffari cannot open these files. Help!

.wmv is a Windows Media file.
You can use Windows Media Player for Mac to open those.
You might also need Stuffit Expander to extract the Windows Media Player file after it's downloaded.

  • What application opens Windows .exe files?

I bought a Samsung SSD 840EVO 500GB for my mid-2010 MacBook Pro but can't start Data dump without a Windows application to run the .exe file to start Data Dump.  Any suggestions?

    .EXE don't run oMacs
There is an application called Wine that claims to open .exe files, I know nothing about it, and it may screw up your machine. I won't even post a link, you can search it and download at your own risk.
UNDERSTAND I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS APPLICATION!
Only making you aware of it.

  • What app to edit RAF file?

    Hi all,
So far I was unable to find an application to open/edit RAF (RAW) files.
    Any ideas?
    Thnx
    Tom

When I find a file extension that I can't open, I turn to our friends at Google. For example, typing ".raf extension" into the search box results in this page:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=.raf%20extension
The first link on the page yields:
    http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=RAF
You should find your answer there.

  • Setting which app opens a picture

How can you choose which app opens a particular file type on OS 9? Picture viewer has become the default programme for opening pics, we need it to be Photoshop. On OS X, you just Apple-I the icon, and are given the option to choose which app opens that file type, with the option to change all, but I can't find the same thing on OS 9.
    Any helpers?
    James

    Hi, James -
On OS X, you just Apple-I the icon, and are given the option to choose which app opens that file type, with the option to change all, but I can't find the same thing on OS 9.
That is because OS 9 does not have a similar feature as part of the OS command or preference set.
If the files in question are ones that are downloaded from the net, then try redoing the appropriate filetype settings in the Internet control panel, Advanced tab, File Mapping item to those for Photoshop. This should work for files downloaded from then on.
For files copied from a non-Mac volume, make similar adjustments in the file-program linkages in the File Exchange control panel, PC Exchange tab. This, too, should correct files copied to the drive from then on.
There is no easy way to do a fix for files already on the drive.
    • One solution might be to remove QuickTime's PictureViewer utility, then create a linkage in File Exchange > File Translation to have Photoshop open any QT PictureViewer files. Unless PictureViewer is removed, the OS will find it and open the pics with it before seeking an alternate program from the list in File Exchange. Note, though, that this may result in inconvenient behavior when using a browser - QT and PictureViewer are comonly used as a helper app for web graphics.
    • Another would be to use a utility app to change the File Type and Creator codes for those files to be the ones for Photoshop. If that is done, then double-clicking the files will open them in Photoshop directly.
One such utility for OS 9 is FileTyper, which is designed to be set up to change the codes on any files dropped onto it - it does that well, but nothing else.
I prefer to use FileBuddy for things like that. It has a host of useful file manipulation features, among which is the ability to create a droplet to make specified changes to files, or to folders full of files, dropped onto it.
An even stronger one is Graphic Converter, which can be set to do a number of changes to files in batch processing mode - not only change the application associated with the file, but also change its type (such as from pict to jpeg), add thumbnails and previews, and even rename/renumber a group of files in sequence.

What app should i buy for my macbook to open an excel file?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
To open an Excel file on your Mac, you have different ways:
    1. Purchase Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac > http://www.microsoft.com/mac
    2. Purchase “Numbers“ on the App Store.
    3. Download LibreOffice > http://www.libreoffice.org
Also, Microsoft Office (it contains Excel for Mac) and Numbers can create documents using Excel format, but LibreOffice is completely free
