What app plays audio previews in Finder

When I'm in column view in Finder I can play any audio file right from Finder without actually opening the file or any application. So what app is used to play these audio files?

I'm not sure, but Finder itself may be running the previews, perhaps using Quicktime-related system library components, but not opening QuickTime player or any other stand-alone app. When I look in Activity Monitor, Finder CPU utilization goes from near-zero to about 13% when an Audio preview is playing, and no new process seems to start running in Activity Monitor. The same large increase in Finder CPU utilization is seen in Activity Monitor when a movie file is previewed.

My wireless earbuds work just fine, but some third-party apps play audio only through the iPod and iPhone speaker even though the buds are properly connected. Does anyone know why and is there a solution?

Assuming you are using Bluetooth headphones, do the apps have the option to use Bluetooth?
The app should have an option to select the speaker (or wired earphones) or the Bluetooth headphones.

  • Audio preview in finder...

The audio preview in the finder on tiger showed up like a quicktime player with a progress bar u could move as u wanted. The new audio preview doesnt give u that option. Any way of changing it back to the old way?

I understand the preview floating pane is quite good for somethings; but it's not very good if you want to listen to a track from a certain point, and then go back to what you where doing previously in other areas of the computer. As soon as you click on another program other than finder, or another finder window the track stops, and the only other option is listening to it all the way from the beginning. This is really limiting and annoying, especially if your listening to long mixes or podcasts. I would really like to be able to choose the way you preview in the finder, i.e. choose the progress bar thing like it had in the old OS.

  • Audio preview in Finder not working

    Hi,
I have a strange problem. My finder don't want to play any audio files (wav, mp3
, m4a,... ) Quick Look is still working but, in stead of having a preview (with
the play button in the middle of the file) it only show a standard logo without
    the play button available.

(As you can see, 3 of 7 files cannot be previewed)

I'm experiencing the same thing but with all kinds of files that have shown a preview in snow leopard: pictures, PDF-documents, music (with album art). It seems that previews are not created automatically whenever I change the name of a file or edit it in any other way, the preview shows up instantly. Rebooting works, too.
This is really annoying and a little online search shows, several people are having the same problem. As far as I know, there's no fix yet.

  • 10.4 style draggable timeline audio preview in Finder/column view?

For the love of Steve please tell me this vital workflow feature/tool has been re-instated in SL. For folks who work with hundreds of audio files the removal in Leopard of the ability to scroll through audio files in a Finder column view window was a real kick in the teeth. In Leopard the only way to access a scrollable preview of an audio file is to open QuickView, effectively disabling ANY OTHER FINDER ACTION during the preview. Sorry to shout here but this is just...a dreadful step backwards. Not only functionally but also an annoying percentage of files (that should and do play in QT etc) will not play in QuickView and fast-ish previewing through multiple files will often crash QuickView.
    Please let it be fixed.

I fedback btw, thanks for that.
Overall Leopard is a fine beast. Basically all I would like is
a/ scrolling and not only play in window columns
b/ fix quickview so it plays all the files it should and
    c/ also doesn't crash
If anyone else feels this way please let Apple know at OSX Feedback

  • What app-specific audio controllers are there?

In Tiger, one of the most useful utilities I used was Detour - in there I could adjust the output volume for different apps. For example iTunes 100% (iTunes has its own vol control anyway), system alerts 50% (so I could still hear incoming mail at a low pitch). However its biggest use was for Safari as UNBELIEVABLY Apple still doesn't think a separate Safari volume is needed. Oh yes it is! Especially when listening to music while browsing, & visiting one of those moron websites that insists on either playing noisy adverts, or a music piece, or god knows what else. (Though having said that, Mozilla doesn't think one is needed for Slofox either. ) I used Detour to mute Safari.
Sadly, Detour is no longer supported and doesn't run in Leopard. Does anyone know of another freeware or shareware utility that does the same job? It's been clear for at least 5 years, probably more, that browsers need their own separate volume control.

Really? can't say I've ever needed that - besides, separate volume controls in every app is going to
get unwieldy if you run a lot of apps.
To be honest, it's really only needed for browsers like Safari. I'm surprised you've never needed it? Have you never been listening to iTunes while browsing, and come across some stoopid website that insists - uninvited - on assaulting your ears with some garbage or other? For example, some of the lyrics sites play some godawful rock video. I used Detour all the time.
I've had a look at Wiretap, but tbh over $100 is one helluva price just to mute Safari (though probably worth it if you use all its features).
Kappy, thanks for the suggestion, I will have a look at those two resources.

  • HT1424 Hello after i configure my vpn. what app do i need to map the drive i need on our server.

after vpn setup what app do i need to find our server and or map the drive that i need
    Thanks

Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings and tick the box "do not use proxy for local/intranet addresses" When I click on the "Lan Setting"
I get three check boxes that are located in two areas called Automatic configuration and Proxy Server:
    Automatic configuration
    [] Automatically select setting
    [] use automatic configuration script
    Proxy server
[] use a proxy server for your lan these setting will not apply to dial-up or VPN connection
At present none of these are selected.
So thus there is none to say "do not use proxy for local.intranet addresses" please help.

hi i am using inphone 5 when i am downloading whats app Audio Notes where it it downloading i am not able to find

If you mean that the iphone 5 *was* previously activated and now it asks to be activated again, then..
Did you change SIM cards (and is the phone locked to a carrier or not)?
Was the iphone previously jailbroken?  (Did you buy it new from Apple or a carrier, or was it from a "third party"?)

  • Playing Audio Files in the Finder-any tips?

Something I've been meaning to ask for ages... and hopefully an easy one to answer!
When playing audio files in the Finder (in 10.5.8), it's really annoying when the file stops playing when you click on another window or application (or even just the Desktop). Is there any way around this?
Someone recommended Snapper, but it's the same story - file stops playing when you click on any other area. Is this problem confined to Leopard (ie. has it been fixed in Snow Leopard?) - never used to be like this in Tiger.
Some of us like to multi-task when listening to audio. The only solution I can see is importing the file into itunes. Any other suggestions?

I assume you're talking about QuickLook?
That's not the Finder, that's QuickLook.
QuickLook is a function that can only work with the foremost selected item, and that makes sense, as you can, for example, QL a PDF within Mail.app, as well.
Why not just use column view (doesn't everybody?) and play it in the Preview pane at the right?
It will keep playing until you close the window or select another object within it.
I use QuickLook when I want to give an audio file a quick once-over - skip here and there, but for actually playing it through, I use the column view preview.

  • What is that audio "rack" app in the new ipad2 "Love" spot?

What is that audio "rack" app in the new ipad2 "Love" spot?
It's in the scene where a garage bank is playing and  a guitar player reaches over and turn a knob on the ipad rack. I can't find it searching mixer, audio, mixer, plugin rack, etc.  Does anyone now what it's called?
    Thanks,
    Steve

It sure looks like StompBox to me. Look at it again. I've watched the video of the ad 5 times in full screen and I still think it's StompBox.
Go to the App Store on the iPad. Tap on What's Hot at the top. Swipe down to the middle of the screen. Tap on Apps from iPad TV ads. Look through the apps yourself.
If it isn't StompBox, then it must be GarageBand. They are only showing two music/mixer type apps in there. The only other music related app in there is Spin Play.

  • Can't play or preview music and movies in Finder window

I notice I can't play or preview music in the finder window. When I hit "play", the slider moves, but I don't hear any sound. Music is playing fine in iTunes. I also can't preview and play movies in the finder, like .mov files. In addition, I can't play music in a slideshow in iPhoto. It is also mute there. Does anyone know what is wrong? I just got this MacBook and had done a firewire transfer of my application files from my iMac desktop. All the programs seem to be working fine except for this music and video problem. Is there a problem with quicktime?
    Thanks.

Run Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder) and be sure output is set to 44,100Hz 16-bit, and the volume sliders are to the right.

  • I have an Apple Composite AV cable for my iPhone 4S, and it's only playing audio not video. What's going on?

It's only playing audio but not showing video. What's going on?

Does the app you're using support video out?

  • Play audio in Finder?

In OS 10.4, I could play an audio file in a column view Finder window. In 10.5, I only get some goofy generic icon. What happened? How can I get OS 10.5 to play audio files in the Finder window like 10.4 did? If there is no preference setting that will enable this, maybe someone knows of a plug-in that will restore this useful feature to the more "advanced" Leopard.

That opens a huge dark window much larger than the slim QuickTime window
So make it smaller. Click drag the bottom right corner.
so it is much less interesting to me than playing in the already open Finder window.
Select the item then in the last column with the info for that item, click the icon. I you move teh mouse over the icon, you should see a Play button (right pointing triangle).
Or as stated, much easier, press the Space bar.
QuickLook is designed so you can easily see what an item is without opening an application.
It displays just about anything. Emails, movies, text docs, pdfs, etc.
A Finder window will not let you read any text or see a movie to see specifically what the file is.
Back to my question: Does anyone know how to enable the Finder to play sound files instead of Quicklook?
After you select the item, click the icon in the last column.
