What Apps and Settings to Change to Maximize Battery Life

Hello - I have been reading many threads on different forums on ways to maximize battery life.  Can someone provide a concise listing (such as what settings to change or which apps to install) to maximize the battery? Also didn't the latest update from Verizon say that it would make better use of the battery?
This way we could have all the steps in one place to make reference to.
Thanks!  Marvin

i'll just give you my setings/options/details, as i believe i get as much out of the battery as i can get. fyi....i use the stock battery that came with the phone.
-i use NO battery saving apps (juice defender, etc). While they may help some, i just don't see the need for them.
-I use no app killer and don't try to "manage" the apps running in the background. i believe they do no good. i know others will disagree.
-my screen timeout is 30 seconds
-my screen display is 35% (i increase it sometimes during the day or outside to see better)
-i leave it on 3g for the most part. i turn on wifi if it's available and i'm going to be using data. i put it on LTE if i'm going to be streaming or downloading large files.
-i don't sync facebook, stock, or news. i sync email every 15 minutes, weather every 3 hours, and google is set to sync (docs, contacts, gmail, and calendar) although i don't know how often it does it? i also syn backup assistant every night.
-i have standalone gps and google location services on all of the time.
-i have the power saver enabled and is set to activate when i get to 15%
i use my device moderately. i hop on facebook, text a bit, make a few calls, download and play podcasts, and browse a bit during the day. i can get through a full day with one full charge on an average day. this entails about 2.5-3 hours of actual use and at least another 12-15 hours of idle time. on a good day i will get 20+ hours of idle time. the more i actually use it, the less idle time i will get. here's a screenshot of yesterday's stats. the "uptime" is the time i actually used the device (calls, apps, texts, etc). the "real uptime" is the amount of time that the device had been turned on since i unplugged it from the charger. i "bump charge" it daily. this is fully charging it (while the phone is on)....then turning it off and plugging it back in again. the light goes back to orange for another 10 minutes, and then goes green. so my phone is turned off every day, for about 10 minutes.
edit: i forgot to mention that i'm in an extremely solid network all day and this will have A LOT to do with your battery life. if your in a poor coverage area, your phone will struggle to get and hold a signal and that will strain the battery....and there's really nothing to do about that, short of moving...lol. but if live in a pretty good network area, then you can get a full day off of one charge (unless you're using it half the time your awake.....in which case no phone is going to help ya out..lol).
hope this helps.

  • What app and settings do I need for using VPN access

Will I find the app I need to install in the App Store and what are the settings for configuring a vpn

Depends. If you are downloading an app dedicated to VPN connectivity, you would need to consult the vendor. To simply connect via VPN natively:
Settings App > General > VPN > Add VPN configuration (and of course turn VPN ON).

  • What exactly happens to my apps and settings when i create a new user account, and delete all the other user accounts?

Such apps and settings that apply to icloud, appstore, and itunes. I know the apps will still be in the new account and any other purchased apps will be in the appstore for re-download. But what will happen I delete user accounts and choose not to save any folders or files of the soon to be deleted user accound? I don't have a disk to do a clean install and I'm trying to give my super old macbook pro to a friend and I want to make sure the laptop is his and everything of mine is gone. Will erasing free space do that trick?

If it is not installed in HD>Applications folder and installed in a user account then it's gone with the user account. It's that simple.

  • HT5622 Can i change my apple id on some devices that i have and not lose my apps and settings?

Can i change my apple id on some devices that i have and not lose my apps and settings?

Yes.  However, note that all Apps purchased/downloaded under one Apple ID will forever be tied to it, and will require it to update.  They will run, but will not update without the other Apple ID
You can go to Settings->iTunes & App Stores->Apple ID and change it there for the stores.
You can also go to Settings->iCloud, Facetime, Messages, and change it for those individual services.

I am having the same issue. I just bought a  Nokia 520 at a great price of $30 to try out the Windows Platform. I have had two iPhones and then I recently got a Galaxy S5 and liked it better than my iPhones. I could not resist the deal of getting a Nokia Windows phone brand new with no contract for $30 just to try out the platform. I really am impressed with the phone. The only issues I am having is that the platform definitely lacks apps that I have really gotten depend on both iPhone and Android. Going from 160 iPhone apps to Android I found that I was not able to find 5 to 10 apps on the Android platform, luckily I found very capable substitute apps. That is not the case on Windows platform.  I really find there are a lot of apps that just don't exist and no real substitutes either. Its a real shame. The Windows Platform is very similar to the iPhone experience. Very clean very easy to use.
Now the other issue is the backup error message. Seems I have not been able to find a solution. I have tried several suggestions. I have deleted the back up several times. I have rebooted the phone several times, I have changed the lockscreen to Bing, I have shut off text backup, I have changed my lockscreen to Never. I don't know what else to try. I have a feeling it is backing up something. Because a backup file does appear in One Drive. But it doesn't feel good to keep getting "There is a problem backing up your phone settings. Try again later." I usually resolve issues on the Galaxy and iPhone a lot easier. I guess there are more solutions available.

  • IPad iOS 5 upgrade saying it will wipe all apps and settings

I have a 3GS and a 1st gen iPad.  Both the iPhone and iPad were sync'd to the same PC.  The iPad has only ever been sync'd to this PC.
I've upgraded the 3GS to iOS 5 with minimal issues (just took 6 tries and a long time), but it's up and running fine now.
I've sync'd the iPad a few times to make sure all of its apps and settings are definitely on my PC.  When attempting to upgrade the iPad, I get a message that says "There are purchased items on the iPad "xxxxx" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library.  You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPad.  Are you sure you want to continue?"  I chose "no," and sync a few more times while making sure I don't see it transferring any apps in the process so I'm extra certain that everything on my iPad is in the iTunes on the PC.  I then try upgrading again and get the same message.
This time I tried hitting "Continue", however then I get a message that says, "Upgrading to iOS 5 will delete all of the media including iTunes store purchases on your iPad.  To preserve this content, apply this update on the computer where you sync music, videos and photos."  I obviously do NOT want this to happen.
So...although this IS the iTunes where I sync my iPad, the upgrade process is saying that it isn't.
Any ideas how I can do this without losing all of my iPad app data and settings?

Finally got it.  Here's what I did...
First, I completely deleted the app I mentioned in the last post out of iTunes, as well as off the iPad.
Next, I went into the windows file system and backed up the last iTunes file backup.  There are other posts on how to do this.
Next, I went into music, and checked to sync music with iTunes.  I then made appropriate selections so that it wouldn't actually download anything to the iPad, even though iTunes is set up to do all music syncing.  I then did the same with Movies, TV Shows, and Books.  I then hit "Apply".  It gave me a message (sorry didn't copy it down) that all of the media on the iPad would be erased, and the iTunes library would be placed onto it.  Knowing I had nothing on it at the time, and I set up everything in iTunes appropriately, I hit OK.  This only took about 1 minute since there was nothing to copy over.
Once it completed, I unhooked it from the computer, and thankfully, all of the apps were still there in the same place they had been beforehand.
Next, I plugged it back in.  Synced again, and confirmed it was still good.
Finally, I hit the "Update" button.
This time it didn't give me the scary message I had been receiving, rather it just said it was going to backup the iPad, then install the update, then restore all my settings, just like my 3GS had done.
So...although this worked for me, I may have been a special case in that I don't keep any of my music or anything on my iPad.  If I had a ton of albums that were not already in iTunes, this probably would not have worked out so well.

Go into your account in the App Store, sign out, do a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank then power ON again in the normal way.], go back to the Apps Store, sign in and try again.

I suggest starting over. Boot into Recovery mode, wipe the HD, reinstall the OS, and, on first boot, use the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide to do the migration.'

  • Optimum settings to maximize battery life???

I'm running firmware rev 1.1.1 on my iPhone and battery life after a full charge does not seem as good lately (purchsed Aug 23rd).
I've been emailing the support person at the local Apple Store and he mentioned "non-optimal settings that can be decreasing battery life"...anyone know what the optimal settings are? Anything official from Apple?
Two recent tests I have done indicate that battery life does not seem to be optimal for this unit. The Usage and Standby numbers below were provided by the iPhone under Settings -> Usage. These tests were done with WiFi on, email set to manual, and charged from the Apple Power Adapter.
    Oct 12 - Full Charge
    Clock time Usage Standby Battery
    4:28 PM 38 min 9 hr 26 min about 1/4
    Oct 13 - Full Charge
    Clock time Usage Standby Battery
    9:21 AM 7 min 9 hr 38 min less than 1/2
It appears that even with no use of the iPhone, a charge would be required each day, and with more frequent use, additional charging would be needed.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I leave WiFi off unless I am actually using it, which can be a pain b/c it takes extra steps to get it turned back on and have the phone search for a hotspot when you need it. But Wifi definitely kills the battery alot faster so i think that the trade off is worth it. I would also keep bluetooth off if you will not be using it. I use it in the car and with my headset so this is difficult for me, but it does drain the battery. Lastly, I often keep the brightness setting in the middle; I think that this was how it arrived from Apple.
Other than those things, I'm not sure what else that you can do. If you are needing to recharge your phone daily, with all of the above things implemented, and with little actual use of the phone,I would definitely get it checked because something is definitely wrong.

  • Iphone 5 battery drains rapidly, I have turned off apps and location even purchased a new battery, is anyone else having this problem?

Iphone 5 battery drains rapidly, I have turned off apps and location even purchased a new battery, is anyone else having this problem? If anyone knows how to fix please let me know. I've tried the hard reset and nothing works.

There was a run of bad batteries for the iPhone 5. Apple will replace them if your phone qualifies and you haven't tried to fix it yourself. See: iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program - Apple Support. Unfortunately, you may have disqualified yourself if you tried to repair it yourself.
However, rapid battery drain is only rarely caused by a bad battery. A bad battery is usually diagnosed by a battery percentage that jumps randomly. See this for advice: http://www.overthought.org/blog/2014/the-ultimate-guide-to-solving-ios-battery-d rain
